48th Ymiden, 722

It was a beautiful trial. The sky was a bright blue, and was free of any clouds. It was hot, but pleasantly so, unlike the intense heat of Saun. Seira and Seri were taking advantage of the weather by taking Taerin for a nice long walk. They started in the Glass Quarter, and Seira admired all of the beautiful houses that could be found there. She felt lucky that she and her sister had been able to find a house for sale in the Glass Quarter. And luckier still that it was next door to their mother's house so that they could still see her every trial while still being independent.

Taerin took her time as they walked, stopping to sniff each and every bush that they passed along the way. Seira found the way that Taerin approached the bushes, much like greeting an old friend to be both adorable, and amusing. After walking through the Glass Quarter, they headed into the Earth Quarter and went to the Azurewind market. Neither sister needed to buy anything, nor would they be able to afford much in the more refined of the two markets found in the Earth Quarter. But Seira enjoyed browsing through the wares all the same; especially the stalls that offered wooden items for sale. She was always on the lookout for new ideas for things to try making herself. And Taerin didn't really care where they went; she just loved being out on a walk with her humans so Seira and Seri usually took her for a walk in places that they liked to go themselves.

"Did you hear about the fire in the school?"

Seira froze at the words. While the speaker had not been speaking to her, her voice had been raised enough to carry through the crowd so that her friends could hear it. Standing near the group as she was, Seira couldn't help but overhear it.

"No I haven't. What happened?" another person asked, this one a young man judging by the sound of his voice.

Seri frowned when she saw that Seira had stopped walking. She quickly went back to see what was going on.

"What's wrong, Seira?" Seri asked.

Seira quickly motioned for her to be quiet, indicating that something had caught her attention. She saw her sister frown again, but Seri didn't speak again, and she turned her attention to the people Seira had indicated.

"A fire broke out in the school that my sister's daughter goes to. Everyone was rescued, and no one was hurt, thank Ilaren, but the school itself has been badly damaged. They need a lot of supplies for the children, and they're calling for volunteers to help them rebuild. That's why I'm here; to buy supplies for the kids."

Seira's eyes widened as she turned to Seri.

"You want to help, don't you?" Seri asked quietly.

Seira simply nodded. Already, she was wondering if anything she had taught herself about working with wood so far would be of any use in helping to rebuild a school. If nothing else, she could at least buy some school supplies and donate them to the cause, but she wanted to do more if it were at all possible.

"I want to help too." Seri said firmly.

"Why don't I take Taerin home while you go buy some school supplies, and find out where the school is? I'll meet you in the Earth Market, and we can go to the school from there."

Seira nodded again. As Seri started heading for home with Taerin, she was already turning to the woman who had first spoken.

"I'm sorry, but I couldn't help but overhear what you said about the school fire. I'd like to help too. Where is the school that was damaged by the fire? I can donate some school supplies, and I'd like to help in other ways too if I can."

The woman told her where the school was, and Seira thanked her sincerely. Then she headed over to the Earth Market as quickly as she could. Since she knew exactly what she wanted, Seira browsed through the stalls quickly, looking for ones that sold books first. Once she found those, she looked for books that she remembered using when she was in school. Her search had her visiting several stalls, and she found enough books to provide school books for nine children. The books were far from new, and they looked it. But they were usable. There weren't any missing or torn pages. Nor were they written in. They looked somewhat worse for wear, but the bindings weren't broken, and the covers were worn, but not damaged in any way. The books themselves were suitable for a variety of ages ranging from eleven to fifteen when most children graduated. She didn't know what books the younger children used since she had never used them herself. But she planned to ask what books were needed when she arrived at the school so she could come back and buy more if needed.

"Sorry I took so long. Did you get everything you needed?"

Seira jumped a little at the sound of her sister's voice. She had been so focused on what she was doing that she hadn't noticed Seri's arrival.

"Not yet. I found some books that the kids should be able to use, but I also want to see if I can get some paper, pens, ink wells...that sort of thing."

The merchant she had just paid for her books approached them. He was a middle aged man with red hair, and a ready smile.

"Are you looking for supplies to donate to the school too?" he asked.

Seira nodded.

"My brother's stall is five stalls down to your right over there." he said as he pointed in the direction the stall in question was in.

"He sells the kind of supplies that you're looking for."

"Thank you." Seira said politely.

She and Seri hurried off in the direction that the merchant had indicated. Seira found the stall she was looking for easily enough, and she began browsing through the wares that were available. She was hoping to buy a large quantity of paper to donate, but she was looking for a particular kind of paper. Seira didn't want to buy the best quality paper she could find because that was an unneeded expense. The children weren't going to be using it to write important formal documents, after all. She needed sturdy, cheap paper that they could use for taking notes and doing homework on.

It didn't take her long to find what she wanted and make her purchases. Then she turned to Seri.

"Now I'm ready to go." she told her.

Seri offered to help Seira carry some of the supplies she had just bought, and Seira was grateful for the offer. She split the load, and handed half of it to her sister. Then they headed over to the school. It didn't take long for them to find it since they had good directions to take them there.

The sight that greeted Seira when they arrived was one of organized chaos. Some people seemed to be clearing debris away from the badly damaged school so that work could begin while a few of them seemed to be directing the efforts of the others. Others seemed to be studying something on a table that was off to one side. Seira guessed that they were looking over building plans, or something similar. There were a lot of children running around as well. Some of the younger ones seemed to be acting as messengers because they were talking to various people and being given notes before running off once more. The older kids were helping to clear away some of the smaller debris or were watching over the young children of some of the volunteers; keeping them entertained and safely out of the way of the workers. Other children seemed to be helping some of the adults at a table where people were bringing donations to. It was pretty obvious to Seira that the children were students of the school and that they wanted to help with the rebuilding.

Seira glanced at her twin and saw Seri nodding, as if in response to her thoughts. She couldn't blame the kids for wanting to help. Had her school burned down while she was a student there, she would have wanted to help with the rebuilding too. And from Seri's response, it was obvious that she would have wanted to help as well.

After a few trills of observation, Seira headed over to the table where people were taking donations. There were a few people ahead of her and Seri, so she waited patiently until someone was free to take the supplies she had bought. After a short time, a middle aged woman with bright blue eyes and pretty brown hair that was pulled into a bun greeted her.

"How can I help you?" the woman asked politely.

Seira set the supplies she was carrying on the table, and Seri did the same a trill later.

"I'd like to donate these to the school." Seira told the older woman.

She hesitated a trill before continuing.

"I picked out books that my sister and I used back when we were in school ourselves, so I hope that they will be useful."

The woman smiled.

"I think we can find a use for them. The paper and pens will come in handy as well. Thank you for your donation."

The woman took the supplies Seira had donated, then moved on to someone else. Seira looked over at the people who were clearing away the debris.

"We will probably be of most use helping to clear away the debris for now, but let's go speak to someone who looks like they're in charge and ask where we're needed." she suggested to her sister.

She and Seri walked over to one of the men who were directing the people who were clearing away the debris.

"I'm Seira Shiryu, and this is is my sister Seriel. We'd like to help."

The red haired man who looked to be a few arcs older than Seira and Seri were smiled at them.

"Thank you, Seira. I'm Fredrik. All volunteers are welcome to help. Why don't you start over there for now?" he asked as he pointed to an area where no one was working yet.

Seira was quick to agree. She thanked the man, and headed over to the area that Fredrik had indicated. Then she and Seri got to work.

OOC
The donation of books and school supplies that Seira gave is worth 2 WP, and this has been deducted from my ledger.

A strong scent of smoke permeated the charred wood from the school. Even a brief contact with the cloying smell irritated her throat, making her feel the need to cough. And the scent made Seira feel deeply uneasy. It was all too easy to picture the fire that had destroyed the school...and to imagine herself caught in that fire. It wasn't fear exactly, but the feeling was strong enough to cause an urge to stay clear of the charred wood. One strong enough that Seira hesitated for a few trills, battling that urge. But after a brief struggle, her determination to help overrode her unease and she got to work moving the charred, broken pieces of wood out of the way.

Some of the pieces of wood were small enough for Seira to carry or drag away by herself. Others were big enough that she needed someone else's help to clear away. Seri helped her to move these, and in turn she helped her twin move any pieces of wood that she couldn't move by herself. It was hard, wearying work. But Seira was determined to help out, so she stuck with it for as long as she could.

By the time she needed a break, other volunteers had arrived to help so there were plenty of people to take her place. Seira and Seri made their way over to a stand where people were offering water and food to the volunteers. Seira took a cup of water and some bread and rested while she ate it. When she was ready to get back to work, she heard someone calling for people who were skilled at working with wood. Seira and Seri split up then, Seri going back to work hauling the charred debris out of the way while Seira headed over to the man who was calling for people who could work with wood and introduced herself. There were a few other volunteers as well.

"I don't know much about working with wood, so I'm not very good at it. But I started trying to teach myself how to work with wood earlier this season so I might be able to help." she offered.

The man, a tall broad shouldered man with a ready smile grinned at her.

"My name's Jareth, and I'll take any help I can get. The clearing's going pretty well, so I want to start doing some of the prep work for when we start rebuilding the school. We're not going to start the actual rebuilding totrial, and even if we were, I would need people who have more skill in the craft for most of it. But we can start measuring and cutting some of the planks now so that they'll be ready when we do begin rebuilding. Think you can help with that?"

Seira smiled and nodded.

"Measure twice and cut once." she said, quoting from the woodworking book she owned.

Jareth grinned again and nodded.

"Exactly that!" he laughed.

"So. I'll get each of you set up at a station and give you the measurements for the planks we need. Then we can all get to work. Sound good?"

Seira and the other volunteers nodded. Then she followed Jareth over to where he had several stations set up. He assigned one to each of the volunteers and made certain that they had everything they needed. Seira got to work quickly once she had been given a station to work at. She read through the measurements for the planks that they needed carefully. With that done, she took her measuring stick and measured out the length that was required. She used a pen to draw a line there. Then she measured it again to make certain that she had gotten the measurements correct the first time. When they matched, she used her saw to cut the plank of wood.

She hadn't practiced with the saw she owned much, so her attempt was far from precise. But she did know how much pressure she needed to use when sawing the wood, so she was mostly successful at it. The edge of the plank where she'd cut it was jagged and rough not smooth as she believed it should be. Still. She had gotten the job done all the same.

Seira measured and cut the next plank. And the next. And the next. Each time she cut one, the task got a little easier, and the end result was a bit better. By the time she had finished cutting all of the planks that were needed of that size, her planks looked a lot better than they had when she first started.

Seira moved on to the next size plank that was needed and got right back to work. She worked steadily, and felt a sense of accomplishment when she didn't make too many mistakes. She was slow though, and she knew it. It took her twice as long to saw a plank than it took the other that were working around her. That frustrated her, but she kept working at her own pace until she was done.

Breaks passed while she was working. From time to time Jareth would come by to check up on her progress and give her some tips. Seira was grateful for this, and she put those tips to good use. As a result, her work became a little easier, and the planks she cut were a little better than they had been before. He would also insist that she take breaks as needed so she wouldn't exhaust herself. This was something that Seira was less inclined to do. Her mind told her that while she was resting, she could be helping by sawing more planks. But at the same time, she knew that he was right. Sawing wood took strength, and ignoring her own limits was a good way to make mistakes, or worse, hurt herself. For that reason, she never balked at taking a much needed break.

More time passed, and when it started to get dark, Jareth called a halt to their work. He thanked them all for their work, and told them to go home and get some rest. Seira went to find Seri, who by that time was finished helping to clear away all of the debris. She felt tired, but satisfied with her efforts as she and her sister made their way home.

Skill Review: All Skills used appropriately to PC's level
Notes: Ahh, another philanthropic adventure for Seira. Of course no Seira thread would be complete without mentioning how she takes care of her animals, taking her dog for a walk though is a very good way to introduce her to the situation on the calendar. In this case, it was the badly burned schoolhouose.

The donation checks out in terms of the wealth points expended. Household items right? Yep sounds about right for a schoolhouse. Good job figuring that!

Otherwise, it's a fairly straight forward but entertaining enough process as Seira interacts with the other volulnteers. I might've liked to see how she interacts with the children, but I suppose they were all task oriented here, so can't fault Seira for maintaining focus on what needed to be done.

She even got some woodworking in, cutting planks for the rebuilding. That's handy knowledge. Maybe she'll become a proper carpenter in time who knows?? Or just make a fancy herb rack ;)

Good writing! Enjoy the rewards.

P.S. For the Endurance knowledge, I'd really recommend in the future making a more complete statement in a knowledge. As it stands, the knowledge lacks something to give context to how it teaches her about endurance. What about throat irritation? Whose? Hers? I know the answer, but the knowledge should stand on its own as a solid sentence at least. But may just be me nitpicking.
