Zana looked down at her piece of parchment and she sighed, audibly.

Her hand reached out and she took hold of a cool glass. Lifting it to her lips, she relished the almost-burn of the ice cold water against her lips. The heat of Saun was a time for laying naked on beaches and languid lovemaking in the ocean, she considered, not for actually working.

Standing up, she smoothed down her dress and made her way out of her office and into the garden. There, she took a seat in the shaded area and considered that the worst thing Scalvoris had done was to abolish slavery. A couple of well-oiled slaves in skimpy dress fanning her right now would be just about ideal, but alas. She suspected there were also limits to what the staff here would do and, as such, fanning was probably beyond their pay grade.

It was, Zana considered, a travesty.

Her Tarouz familiar, MelodyImage fluttered down to the table at which Zana sat. She looked at the small bird and she felt the amusement in the creature. "It's rather warm you know." She smiled. "That's a good idea. Alright. Thank you, Melody, as always." With a hop and a skip, the bird took flight and Zana watched her. Then, she called her assistant StefanImage out and he came and sat down opposite her.

"I need to plan for next Cycle, Stefan," she said, and he nodded. "I'm finding myself somewhat running in a circle, and I wonder if you'd be a darling and help?" He smiled at her and nodded. "What is your issue?"

Zana considered it. "I need to put together the protocol for visiting dignitaries. To do that, I have to put forward the places for those dignitaries to visit, things to show them and so on. In order to do that, I need to know more about this place than I do. In order to understand the needs of the dignitaries, I need to have visited their countries and lands. So I need to be both here and there before I can easily work out what is needed."

Stefan looked at her and shook his head slightly, he seemed rather amused and Zana gazed at him with an expression like she was a lost child.

It worked.

"Would you like me to draft up a plan for you?"

"Stefan, you're an absolute darling did I ever tell you that?" He smiled and blushed a little. He was a tough nut to crack, Zana considered, but she had his number now. He wanted to help, wanted to have her ear, without actually being in the limelight. She could - and did - use that.

"You do that, and I'll sit here and write a few letters, alright?" He nodded, stood up and started to walk away, stopping as Zana spoke.

"Be an angel darling and refill this water, would you?"

It had been three breaks since she'd tasked Stefan with the job of working out the best and most logical order for her to visit and arrange things. He came back out to find Zana sitting waiting for him. Of course, in the time that he'd been busy, she'd had a spot of lunch (brought to her by the kitchen) and read through some correspondence, made some replies. It was simply too hot to do things quickly, but she'd worked her way through it.

Stefan slid into the chair opposite her once again, and Zana looked at him. "You're speedy, that's impressive," Stefan smiled and shook his head. "It's just about logistics."

Ah, Zana thought. That explained why she had no clue.

"So, I've put together a list of places in Scalvoris to visit," he said. "And I've put them in one of three categories ~ those marked with a 1 are the ones you should get to as soon as you can, the 2s are next on the list and then the 3s." Zana looked at the list and raised an eyebrow. "But places like Scalvoris Town and Almund are 3s. Those are the larger centres of population?" Stefan nodded. "Exactly," he said. "We know about them. You can ask me, or Sallie, or any of the staff here and they'll have a good idea of what's there." Zana nodded her head. "So, you're suggesting that I prioritise those places which we don't have immediate or at least easy access to?" He nodded and she thought about it. "I like that," she said . "I like that a lot. Alright. But I thought that Beacon was quite well known?" She pointed to it as one of the places marked with a 1.

"Is it," Stefan replied. "But consider. You have moderately easy access to someone with information on, for example, Egilrun," he tapped the name of the place, marked with a 2. "Because of the Council Member. Same thing goes for Darbyton. An active Council Member." Zana nodded. "I see," she said, softly. "That makes sense. I've spoken to the Alberach. It looks awful when the village of former slaves is the only one of it's size without a representative." Stefan considered that and nodded. "I hadn't thought of it that way, but that makes sense," he acknowledged.

"So, this is put here, or these are, because of their availability of alternative information? Of knowing what sources we have and how easy they are to get information on?" Stefan nodded. "Exactly".

Zana smiled at him. "This is excellent work, Stefan. Thank you. I think I'm going to focus on Beacon for the remainder of this season." Stefan looked at the list. "That makes sense. You don't want to stretch yourself too thin. Will you take someone with you?"

For a moment, Zana considered it and then nodded. "I will. Arrange it for me, would you dear heart?" He smiled.

Looking at her diary, Zana identified the trials when she would go and visit Beacon. Stefan then arranged for her to stay in the small Inn there. It would be slumming it, Zana considered, but she determined that she'd treat herself to a few trials in the Knights Rest and eating at Cally's in Scalvoris Town the trials after. While she didn't need to, she thought it made sense to combine her visit to Beacon with one to Scalvoris Town, since they were so close together.

Of course, Zana merely told Stefan that and he organised it.

"I'd like to have an itinerary, while I'm there," Zana said. "It makes sense to me. I want them to be aware of the reason for the visit, also. I think I'll write a letter, what do you think?" Stefan agreed that this would be a wise course of action and so Zana put quill to parchment.

It was an important letter and, as such, she was careful in her wording of it. Her political savvy was not as good as it would be but, she considered, she had learned a lot and quite quickly. All things considered, that must mean that she was desperately talented in this field. That made perfect sense to her and was largely to be expected but still, it was good to get confirmation.
From the Office for Foreign Affairs,
Faldrass,
Scalvoris.

Date sent: 10th Saun, 722
To the Community Leaders of Beacon,

I am writing to inform you of my intention to visit Beacon for four trials, arriving on the 23rd Saun. My purpose for this visit is:

Introductions As the Council member for Foreign Affairs, it is my job to ensure that all areas of Scalvoris will benefit from our trade and foreign relationships. I can not do that if I do not understand all the areas of Scalvoris. Therefore, I will be undertaking visits to as many areas as I can over the coming seasons and cycles, and this is part of that.

Understanding I wish to understand Beacon, in order to be able to represent it to other cultures and territories. I am currently putting together new protocols for visiting dignitaries which will include tours of particular spots of interest on Scalvoris. I would very much like to discuss this with you and consider what Beacon has to offer.

Collaboration It is my hope that the Office for Foreign Affairs and Beacon will be able to work together going forward for the mutual benefit of Scalvoris.

I trust that this is acceptable to you. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask. I look forward to seeing you on the 23rd Saun.

With best regards,
Zana Delroth
When she was done, she passed the letter to Stefan to send. Stefan read through the letter that she sent and nodded, and she considered that, all things considered, she'd done a very good trial's work. She deserved, she thought, a nice meal tonight. So, she bade Stefan, Sallie and the other staff good evening and she left.

Your Review
Zana

Overview

Hello Zana. This was an excellent learning while doing thread. It is interesting because any good bureaucrat would take this approach to use the talents of those good at something they aren’t as good at. I love how she doesn’t even realize the wisdom in such a move. Again her Intelligence is there but shows itself in unique ways. Thank you for the Read. Fate.
