Devin Buys New Swords

Image
Ashan 20, Arc 721

On the 20th of Ashan, Devin Thorn, priest of Delroth, medical genius in progress and unexpected Baron (He had just wanted Alyssia to have the Barony!) was walking through the streets of Scalvoris Town, with a spring in his step and a huge smile on his face (and a wonderfully purple outfit, including a coat, on his body) because he was in such an excellent mood. A little while ago, he had ordered something at Little Korlasir, and that trial, he would finally be able to pick it up. He couldn’t wait to hold it in his hands and take a look at it!

When the blacksmith’s shop finally came into view, he made a little jump, because he couldn’t contain his excitement anymore, and then he quickened his pace, closed the last couple of metres to his destination and opened the door wide. Standing in the doorway, he surveyed the interior of the shop for a few moments, and then he approached the man that stood behind the counter, Hurk himself, bowing deeply, as if the smith were in fact a noble lord, because such skilled craftsmen should be treated with respect.

He didn’t know how anyone could be happy with such a name (It reminded him of the sound that cats made when they threw up a hairball!), but Hurk sure made good weapons which why he had chosen him and nobody else. Only weapons from his shop was good enough!

“Do you have them? Are they ready?” he asked and grinned all over his face, his eyes shimmering brightly and leaned slightly over the counter in order to try and see what was in the backroom where he suspected the various things that people had ordered to be. A moment later, he abruptly straightened himself again and looked at Hurk expectantly.

Hurk who was a rather simple man did not react with such overwhelming excitement as Devin. He only nodded curtly before he momentarily disappeared through the door behind the counter. When he returned, he carried a rectangular box in his arms that he set down in front of Devin. Upon seeing the young Mortalborn’s questioning look, he nodded at him again, a sign that he was allowed to open it and take a look at what’s inside.

When Devin lifted the lid, with bated breath, the blacksmith could not help but smile a little, after all. He was proud of his work, and he was happy that he had been given the opportunity to create something as exquisite. He had actually had to procure some of the materials from somewhere else as he did not have such rare and expensive things in storage.

“Amazing”, Devin gushed as he carefully removed the first of the two shortswords that he had ordered from the box. It was perfectly shaped and felt comfortable and natural in his hand, and when he raised it a bit, it almost seemed to catch the light. The weapon was made of an alloy of very rare metals – Grave Gold and Geminite. The blade was silver. Grave Gold was already shiny on its own, but due to the addition of Geminite, its surface appeared to be smooth, like a diamond, or glass, or perhaps, the surface of an icy lake, and glossy.

The hilt was, perhaps, a hint darker than the blade, but no less shiny, and covered with beautiful and detailed, feather-like engravings. The second shortsword that he removed a moment later was its exact twin. Together, the two swords had cost more than some houses, which was just about acceptable for a priest of Delroth who was a Baron on top of it.

(Devin didn’t feel guilty about buying such expensive weapons, not even for a single moment. He had used his own money, and he had already helped Scalvoris a lot, both through his work as a doctor and through his donations. He more than deserved something that nice!)

“Grave Gold is, as I already explained the last time we talked, extremely durable”, Hurk explained proudly. “It’s resistant to water damage or rust, and what more, it changes color when it’s exposed to blood. Some of my other customers order it exactly because of that, to show the world just how skilled they are. Geminite is just as durable. I’m not sure how the addition of Geminite affects the blood-absorbing qualities, but some of the effect should still be present”, he added.

Devin looked up from his new weapons when he heard that, raised a perfectly groomed, pitch-black eyebrow and subsequently shrugged his shoulders indifferently. “I don’t really care about that”, he admitted with a grin – he had absolutely no interest in stabbing people and spilling blood, because some of the blood might get on his nice clothes and ruin them. “I’m more interested in the other qualities. The swords are great”, he told Hurk because his amazing work couldn’t be praised often enough in his opinion. “So how much exactly do I owe you? Fifty onyx nel? Sixty onyx nel? A hundred onyx nel?”

When Hurk told him the exact sum, Devin took his domain bag that he had attached to his belt and covered by his coat so that it would hopefully be safe from thieves (such as the one he had been once), reached into it and removed coin after coin from it, until there was a whole pile of coins on Hurk’s counter, and the blacksmith’s eyes nearly threatened to drop out of their sockets. He quickly took the money, put it into a lockbox and carried it into the backroom because he was rather worried about someone stealing his money all of a sudden, and then he bid the Mortalborn who looked even more excited than before farewell.

Re: Devin Buys New Swords

Image
Carrying the box with his wonderful new swords in his arms, the young Mortalborn made his way back home – very quickly, because he was also expecting a delivery that trial, a delivery that would complement the swords very nicely, even though it hadn’t been quite as expensive.

When he walked through the door, Aidan, his roommate, approached him, a smile on his face and gestured for him to follow him into the living room where a big box stood on the table. Devin momentarily put the box with his swords away in order to open the new box.

Inside it was an exquisite set of leather armor, slightly reddish in color, incredibly well-made and highly attractive – a set of leather armor made of Blooded Leather, a type of leather that repaired itself and that lasted much longer than normal leather which was he had picked it.

Normal leather wasn’t good enough!

He removed each piece of armor from the box, admiring it, before he abruptly froze and pointed, a confused look on his face.

“What’s that?” he wanted to know.

There was something else in the box as well, something that he had definitely not ordered!

“A shield”, Aidan replied dryly, stating the obvious and grabbed the note that the order had come with. “According to this here, you get a free shield with every set of armor”, he explained.

Devin made a face. Normally, he was quite happy when he got free stuff, but he didn’t like shields. At all. In his opinion, shields looked stupid, and he had mainly gotten those swords and that armor because he wanted to look good and impress people. And besides, he only had two hands, and they would already be occupied by two swords. Where was he even supposed to put the shield?

He was just wondering if he should dump the shield into the trashcan when he suddenly had a most excellent idea, and his eyes lit up. Maybe, he could just use the shield instead of a sled in winter – or cover his head with it when it was raining – or use it to transport stuff!

That might work!

Re: Devin Buys New Swords

Image
Feeling much better about the unexpected and mostly unwanted shield, Devin abruptly grabbed Aidan’s arm and proceeded to drag him out of the living room and into the hallway. “Let’s spar!” he announced, took Aidan’s simple steel sword that was a little longer and heavier than his own swords from the stand near the door and handed it to him. “I want to try my new weapons out now!”

Aidan pretended to resist for a moment before he grinned and nodded because he actually didn’t mind sparring. At all. Once upon a time, Devin had been quite reluctant to engage in any combat-related activities, even if it was just for fun, because he might get hurt. He was quite happy that he’d changed his mind, even though he had mostly learned to use a sword (and ultimately dual-wield) because he wanted to look good and impress people.

Aidan loved to spar, and he was happy to have someone that he could share his hobby with!

Since Devin was in such a good mood that trial, he allowed Aidan to make the first move even though he normally rarely did so because he didn’t want to give his opponent any advantage. He gestured for Aidan to come closer which he did immediately.

The older man advanced, and a few moments later, he raised his sword and attempted to strike. Smirking slightly, Devin brought his two swords forward and crossed them in front of him, much like a pair of scissors in order to catch and ultimately stop the other man’s weapon.

To his surprise As he has expected, because he had become quite the excellent swordsman, he actually succeeded – and immediately drew his right sword back and attacked with the other. Just defending yourself was not enough; you needed to attack immediately after parrying if you wanted to win the fight. That was something that he had come to realize.

And he wanted to win, even if Aidan and he only fought for fun!

Unfortunately, Aidan managed to parry the attack that he considered to be quite clever and countered with another strike. Since always using the same attack was probably not a good idea (You might become predictable!), Devin decided to react slightly differently this time.

He did not execute a cross block; instead, he only met Aidan’s sword with his right sword. Since it would be harder to block your opponent’s weapon with just one arm, he also turned the sword in question slightly in order to create an angle which caused Aidan’s blade to subsequently slide off.

A moment after he had parried with his right sword, Devin attacked with his left sword that was lowered slightly compared to his left sword, feeling quite like a masterful swordsman.

(If he had taken a moment to think he would have realized that, while he was definitely good now, he had far from mastered the art of the blade and that his attacks were actually pretty simple – the last one had been a thrust, a rather basic attack, for example.)

Aidan parried again, with considerably more effort this time, and then he suddenly exclaimed, “Heidi!”

“I won’t fall for this”,
Devin remarked dryly. “You can’t deceive a master of deception!”

“But she’s really there!”
Aidan insisted and proceeded to point with his sword.

Devin eyed his roommate with unveiled suspicion for a moment, wondering if a surprise attack would come the moment that he looked away, before he quickly turned around.

Behind them stood his pet goat Heidi. Apparently, he hadn’t closed the door properly so that she had wandered into the garden. Upon noticing that he was looking at her, she bleated loudly and insistently.

“I think she’s hungry”, Aidan remarked and laughed. “Shall we feed her before we continue?”

Devin nodded, and then they went into the house together in order to cater to Heidi’s needs.

Notes:
I feel like I should note that I've never told you how fun it is to read the openings of Devin threads to find out what status he is, in his own mind. Apparently in this thread, we are starting out at "Devin Thorn, priest of Delroth, medical genius in progress and unexpected Baron (He had just wanted Alyssia to have the Barony!) ..." It amuses me to read how that changes as time goes on.

Swords! Serious business. I enjoyed reading Devin's justification for purchasing the swords. He lives in his own beautiful little world...that sometimes collides with the real world! As time goes on, I'm noticing that his world and the real world are meshing a bit more, as he realizes that what he thinks sometimes isn't always accurate. I love that about his character growth. While Devin may never want to grow up, there are shades of a responsible adult in there.

Oh, Devin. A shield for a sled? Or an expensive umbrella?

Heidi's unexpected cameo at the end was a bit of fun too.

The sparring was well-done (weapons training can be tough to write in an entertaining manner) and Adian is always a welcome addition to threads. Great job!

If you have any questions, comments, or concerns regarding this review, feel free to PM. Enjoy your rewards!
