[Haven] Low Flying Clouds

28 Ashan 721

There was an unusual emptiness in Balthazar's chest as he stood on the beach looking out towards the horizon. Nothing had gone wrong yet, no one was hurt or dead, but someone was missing. One person. She left because she needed to and she went alone because he could not go with her but now the settlement felt more empty than ever before. Even the watchful eyes of Miranda behind him didn't quite shake the leader of the settlement from his sorrow. He wanted her to come back. He wanted her to be there with him making bad jokes and prodding him. He wasn't always comfortable with how willing she was to express things in front of their guards but he missed it when it was gone. After thirty bits of what he told Miranda was 'meditation' Balthazar returned to his tent. His house was being built now but he still slept and operated out of the tent and would continue to until the house was done.

He slowly moved across the beach and through the flaps of the tent to his desk then he sat and lazily looked over the recent letters that had been delivered to him. "You saw these already right?" Balthazar asked Miranda passively while noting how they'd already been opened. His mail always arrived preopened but he couldn't bring himself to be bothered by it anymore. One trial he'd receive letters only he was privy too and he would feel good again, until then he would just... drift. No. He would lead. He was a leader and had people who were relying on him to do more than drift.

"Tib'ron has." Miranda confirmed without offering much other information. The letters were nothing of consequence, or at least they didn't seem important. It might have been the cloud over his heart making it seem that way. Balthazar eventually put the letters aside and went over to look at the small armory of weapons he hadn't wielded in any significant way in a while. His faldrunium sword hung from his hip on one side most of the time but his hammer, many daggers, and spear all sat in his tent. Did he need to many small blades? Balthazar picked up the dagger Elisabeth had given him and his spear. In the old trials, training with the elements had made him feel better so he was hoping that training with his weapons would have that effect now. "What are you arming yourself for?" Miranda asked, reasonably concerned that he'd picked up three different weapons- four now that he also tied his hammer to his belt.

"Without magic, my range is a little more limited. I'm going to go to the Ashwoods and practice my throwing arm a little."

"You should pick one weapon to focus on." Miranda advised. Balthazar saw the logic in her suggestion so he set the daggers and spear back down while keeping the hammer with him. Miranda gave him a somewhat surprised look but said nothing. Of all the weapons he had, he chose the hammer to practice throwing? Balthazar's choice was driven by one thing, the hammer was the only weapon he could summon back into his hand at will. It was like a... well... what was something you threw that always came back to you? It was like that. Balthazar and Miranda set off across the settlement to the Ashwoods, Balthazar stopped a few times to greet people who noticed and waved to him but ultimately kept on target and reached the Ashwoods.

He found a decent spot near the edge of the woods. There was a dead tree with ash covered wood that stretched to about his height, maybe a little shorter. Balthazar started standing ten paces away from the tree. He removed his sword from his belt and set it on the ground, then took Grabthar's Hammer in his hand and spun it a few times, switching from the blunt to the pointed end and then back. What surface did he want to strike his enemy with? Was there a way to strike them with all three surfaces? Maybe different throws could achieve different results. No two punches propelled chunks of rock the same, why would throwing it be different. Balthazar moved through a few different motions with the hammer before he ever actually threw it.

The first motion was an overhead throw using both hands. He brought the hammer back over his head, clutching the handle with two hands, and slowly guided it forward as if he was going to hurl it. It felt like a good motion but it was slow, it would open up his midsection to attack during the wind up, and it was easy to see coming. The power that came from throwing the hammer with two hands was only going to be worth it if the spiked side ended up in the target... then again it it hit them at all it would hurt. Balthazar had a strong arm. He wasn't too concerned about it opening his midsection to attack because it was supposed to be a throw and he imagined he'd only throw his weapon if he and his opponent were mutually out of reach.

The second motion was a one handed overhand throw like he imagined someone would throw and axe only Balthazar wasn't sure which part of the hammer he was trying to hit with when doing that. He looked at the relatively flat top of the hammer and moved his arm slowly through the motion again. If he let go at the right time he might be able to get it to fly straight and hit with the blunt end. It was all theory for the moment, he hadn't tossed the hammer once yet, but he was getting there. This second motion was faster than the first and could probably be used more quickly in combat. It didn't open him up for attack as much and it was not as easily telegraphed as the first.

The third and final motion he went through was an underhanded toss. He did not like that one. It seemed to rob him of all the force and directional control the other two offered and it felt weird in his shoulder to move through the motion. He decided to revisit that one after he'd learned to throw the hammer decently and then reassumed the stance for the first motion again. He took the hammer over his head with both hands, brought it back, then swung it forward towards the tree, releasing it at what he thought was the perfect moment. He thought wrong. He wanted to spike of the hammer to dig into the tree but the hammer flew wide to the left and crashed into the ground.

Balthazar held out his hand and the hammer lifted off the ground before flying back into his grip. He assumed the throwing position again, and threw the hammer once more with the same force as the first time. The second throw was a little more successful, he hit the dead tree causing bits of bark to break off, but the hammer bounced aside and hit the floor rather than burying the spike as he intended.

They were going to be here for a while.

He might have spent a full break standing out by the Ashwoods and hurling his hammer at the dead tree in his overhead and overhand forms, he might even have tested the underhand toss a few more times if the one time he actually had thrown it the hammer hadn't spun wildly beyond his control. Lesson learned, if you flick your wrist, the hammer with twist. Which was a bad thing... for a hammer at least. However the prolonged hammering of the dead tree was cut short by a sudden rumbling that both Balthazar and Miranda heard coming from within the woods. Balthazar summoned his hammer back into his hand and hooked it onto his belt. "You heard that too right?" Balthazar asked Miranda as he moved past his target into the woods with the shadow close behind. Miranda nodded but said nothing, her hand going to her sword while the two of them looked around. They didn't see anything immediately, but after a few trills they heard the sound again.

It was clearer the second time they heard it. It was a noise like branches snapping. Balthazar and Miranda weren't quite sure where it was coming from though. It was loud and accompanied by some other rumbling noise like... chewing. The two stopped walking forward and looked around having decided the noise must have been coming from somewhere nearby. It sounded so close, just- Balthazar and Miranda realized why the noise seemed close at the same time and looked up to the top of the trees where a massive furry white figure seemed to drift slowly through the air with a tree branch in it's mouth. A full branch? Whatever it was, it had been eating from the trees above them and that must have been the noise they heard. So the creature was a herbivore? The creature saw them as they saw it, eyes widening in surprise and perhaps excitement but Balthazar was not sure if animals and people could be read the same way. It turned to them and for a moment the low flying cloud seemed like it would approach, but when it saw their weapons and Miranda's hand on her sword, it turned and took off further into the air, quickly moving beyond Balthazar and Miranda's reach. Definitely a herbivore. With it's size Balthazar would have assumed they'd be attacked if it were after them for food.

"What was that?" Balthazar asked with a little child-like awe in his voice. Whatever it was, it had flown away from them and it seemed it did not like the weapons he was carrying. Rude of Balthazar, after all, to bring a weapon to their first meeting.

"I'm not sure."

"Well... tell the Albarech and then let's see if we can find it again."

Comments: You described the way that Balthazar misses Elisabeth very well in my opinion. It is obvious just how much she means to him. I like how determined he seems to be in this thread. He doesn’t just want to drift, he wants to be a leader, and he has people that want to rely on him!

Balthazar’s hammer sounds like a very useful weapon. His practicing with it was described well and in detail, and I appreciate that you had him struggle a bit, and even fail, considering that he is untrained in the skill in question.

I already knew that this solo would involve his new Legendary Mount, but I thought it was an exciting moment when Balthazar and Miranda suddenly heard that rumbling, nevertheless.

That creature sounds quite interesting! I wonder how Balthazar plans on finding it again and making it his.

At the end of the thread, Balthazar told Miranda to tell the Albarech. From what I can see, there is no post in that regard in Council Correspondence, Memos & Actions.. Please take care of that now, and please post your reports before you submit a review request from now on.

Enjoy your rewards!

P.S.: You only requested five skill knowledges. Let me know if you want a sixth, after all!
