Ashan 19, Arc 721
Devin knew that he wouldn’t be able to keep the scalvwinggoat, but he decided to make good use of the time that he spent in its company. When they finally arrived in Scalvoris Town, he began to walk with his head held high, a huge smile on his face and a spring in his step. The creature did what he had hoped that it would do – it attracted attention. People looked at it, and a moment later, they also looked at him. He liked being looked at!
Well, a considerable number of people looked at him, but not all of them. A lady that carried a wicker basket full of groceries, for example, just cast a glance at it before she shrugged her shoulders and continued to walk. The somewhat irritated Mortalborn wondered if there was something wrong with her eyes or if she had something against him personally.
Fortunately, a girl with two red braids positioned herself in front of Aidan, the creature and him just then and asked in a very excited tone of voice, “Are the two of you circus performers? Can you show me something?”
Aidan was about to open his mouth and tell her that they were of course not circus performers, but Devin just smiled brightly at her, handed his roommates the reins, made him turn around, rummaged through his backpack and removed two potatoes from it. He didn’t have any balls to juggle with, but potatoes were kind of round, so they worked just as well!
“Take a look at this here!” he told the girl. A moment later, he raised his hands. He started by throwing the potato in his left hand. Just as the potato began to come down towards his right hand, he tossed the second potato and – caught it with his other hand. He grinned all over his face and began to juggle the potatoes more quickly while the red-haired girl watched him open-mouthed, and Aidan rolled his eyes and muttered something under his breath. The next couple of attempts went well as well, but eventually, one of the potatoes landed on the ground, in no small part due to a woman suddenly approaching him.
“Jane, stop bothering Doctor Thorn!” she chided the girl that was apparently her daughter before she looked at the creature that decided to greet her by bleating. Her eyes widened for a moment before she complained, “I can’t even leave you alone for a bit while I buy bread!”
“She wasn’t bothering me at all”, Devin who was quite happy that the woman had recognized him (He just loved being famous!) assured her, bowed deeply and dramatically, much like a real circus performer and grinned. “She wanted a show, and I was quite happy to oblige!”
“Aidan”, he wanted to know a bit later, once Jane and her mother who had stared at the creature some more had left, picked up the potato that he had dropped, wiped it and looked at his roommate. “I think that Jane assumed that we are circus performers because of our bleating friend here. Do you … do you think that it actually escaped from some sort of circus? Or do ordinary citizens have scalvwing goat mount … things as well?”
“Anyway, let’s head to the noticeboard in front of the Scholar’s Nook, write our message and see if anybody reacts. We can put our friend into the stable in the meantime”, he decided a moment later, secretly hoping that nobody would react to his message and that he would be able to keep the creature, after all. “By the way”, he continued as something occurred to him. “I just realized that I have no idea if it’s a girl or a boy!”
“See for yourself”, Aidan told him in a dry tone of voice. When Devin looked at him questioningly, he pointed, and the Mortalborn bent down in order to take a brief look at the creature’s nether regions before he abruptly straightened himself again. Right. It was obviously male!
