Re: [The Forging] Ice

Many arcs later, should the Immortals deem him worthy of a long life, Darius Baer would reflect on a number of key moments from his Ishallr experience.

There would, of course, be no forgetting the feeling of his clothes soaking through to the point that he felt as though his very bones might freeze. And his first encounter with Ledas and the genuine belief that he was staring death in the face would also live long in the memory. And he would also recall the moment just before the three chainstones were placed into the hands of the ice statues; when he, Arlo, and Praetorum,

That moment would be remembered because of how it seemed to take forever for nothing to come of it, even though barely a trill passed before Ishallr broke free. He would remember holding his breath as he watched the others, wondering if it was fear he saw in their eyes, and hoping that they couldn't see the same trepidation in his. And he would recall the sheer silence - real or imagined - that filled the cave as the three men fulfilled their part of

He would come to think of it as the moment that they had brought Scalvoris back from the brink.

When the Induk was finally freed of its bonds, it took everything within Darius to maintain his balance. Ishallr was an intimidating sight, and despite having witnessed Faldrass' liberation, the Scalvorian was still keenly aware of how small and vulnerable he was by comparison. His voice was deep and impossible to ignore, but impossibly brought with it a level of comfort.

That Ishallr thought he was in Darius' debt seemed remarkable - almost incomprehensible - but the Scalvorian nodded his head in acceptance all the same.

He felt an overwhelming sense was relief. He didn't know what was happening in Scaltoth or the Sweetwine, but he knew that whatever became of Scalvoris, it wouldn't be as terrible as it might have been. His mind immediately thought of the Hopetounians who had dared to restart their lives on Faldrass, and who now seemed to be one step further away from danger. He thought of his father Josef, an honest and hard-working man who might now be able to add more arcs to his life. He thought of the friends he knew who were involved in the other expeditions, and he hoped that Yeva, Oram, and the others might be better able to succeed due to his efforts. But most of all, he thought of Astra.

The half-biqaj brunette had taken on the task of ensuring the ships were taken to a safe distance off the coast so that they didn't get torn apart against Faldrassian rocks, and Darius was confident in her ability to do precisely that, but he wondered what she had been up to since then. It was she who had urged him to go, but it seemed as though a lot of time had passed since the hailstorm in Hopetoun. The caves on Ishallr had a reputation for causing people to lose their way; perhaps they made people lose track of time, too? She had encouraged him to follow the call to adventure, but she had also urged him not to be a hero. He hoped that he had done nothing to disrespect that request.

Darius continued to listen as Ishallr spoke, the Induk deeming those in the room to be worthy of his gratitude and, as far as Praetorum and Eckman were concerned, to be invited into a frozen bond of ice.

All of this felt somewhat familiar to the Scalvorian, after what he had experienced on Faldrass, but it was the invitation that was extended to Ledas that truly surprised him. The ice tiger was being given the opportunity to go with him, and the thought caused him to remain silent for a few trills as he recovered from the shock.

"Aye," he eventually spoke, finding his voice and turning from Ishallr to Ledas. "I would be honoured to have you join me. We wouldn't have been able to free Ishallr without your guidance. Thank you."

He reached out to pat the tiger, suddenly feeling confident enough to do so, before scratching him behind the ears - as if it was completely normal to do so with a creature made of ice - and untied the rope from around his neck. They remained bound to one another, but they no longer needed a physical tether to prevent from being pulled apart.

And then he felt a tug within himself, and, with Ishallr he knew that it was time to go. Their work in the ice caves was done.

For the second time, Darius was transported back to Scalvoris by a means not of his own understanding. His feet felt the familiar curves of worn cobblestones beneath his boots as he stared up at the Glass Temple. He heard Praetorum's voice, and he nodded at the man's assessment, though it was more to acknowledge that he had heard him speak than it was to suggest that he'd given it much thought.

Darius was flanked by a tiger made of ice, its giant paws dwarfing the pavers in the street. The frozen predator cocked his head, then looked up at Darius, who took in a deep breath. The mariner knew there was still work to be done. The Scaltoth and Sweetwine groups still had to complete their tasks, and they might need help.

"Time to introduce you to the others, Ledas," he breathed quietly, and then, with the tiger remaining at his hip, he entered the Glass Temple.

For Darius Baer, and for the time being, there would be no rest. Not yet.
Inventory
  • Average quality studded leather gambeson, leggings, and boots.
  • Average quality longsword.
  • Average quality dagger.
  • Waterflask.
  • Ledas' lantern.
  • Joelle's fortune telling card: the boatman.
  • Mirror with magic healing ability. Your mirror functions as a normal mirror - but it emits a constant warmth along with the constant glow. It will function as a camp-fire if placed on the ground and keeps the person carrying it in a constant state of warm - summer or winter!
  • Saoire's box of chocolates. A small box with 10 8 chocolates. They are, frankly, beyond delicious and taste like your very favourite thing. You find yourself unable to more than 1 on any trial. But each one provides the following to whoever eats it for the next 6 breaks: "Saoire's domain of Gifts is not merely one of physical goods, but of the happiness and joy that comes with both giving and recieving a well meant gift. This ability allows the Blessed to give both themselves and anyone they're with a feeling of joy and good cheer, banishing negative feelings like sorrow, anger, and fear."
  • Cassion's book. Cassion has given Darius a book in which to write things.
  • Other winter equipment provided by the Elements. (Spare clothing, rope, crampons, rations, etc.)
  • Vega's skill bonus. This skill will be directly linked to the focus Vega has so - if it is in a camp preparing for battle, for the soldiers it will be a combat skill - but the cook for that camp would gain a bonus to cooking for the troops. No more than one bonus per day can be given. (Chosen skill: Field Craft.)
  • Vega's flag bonus. PCs who are working towards the goal of the clan are given more support, more help. Things happen quicker and more efficiently for that reason. PCs who are actively using skills which benefit the "clan" and are doing so with NPCs / PCs of the "clan" - may assume that the task is less difficult and by everything going smoothly and people helping, everything falls together more easily. This allows the task to be easier / a stroke of luck /teamwork to mean that the task is completed in 50% of the time OR to 2 levels higher a standard than they could otherwise achieve.

Luck? Or predestination? Arlo frowned curiously as Darius examined the card he'd been given. And his mind wandered back to that exchange some time ago, and a card of his own. He was less inclined to be shocked that Joelle had managed to be in two places at once; Arlo had seen and experienced much stranger things than that before. But it he was honest, he'd rather luck than predestination. The latter implied a distinct lack of independent thought and free will. Then again, as his own mother had said off and on through her life, what's meant to be, will be.

Either way, she'd been there, she was here; and the three of them, himself, Darius and Praetorum had acted as one, just as they needed to in order to see the Induk freed. It might have only been trills, but if felt as if the world stopped spinning and time stood still in that instant. And then everything changed. The statues, even his own. Then there was Ishallr, and what a sight he was. Arlo was transfixed, otherwise he might have taken a step backwards on impulse.

Instead, he dipped his head in respect when Ishallr began to address them all. The tremor, had there been more of them, might have been enough to knock him off his feet. Or, given his skill at keeping his balance, at least rocked him back on his heels a little. And yet, there was only one. A powerful being to be sure, yet Arlo was not afraid. Only in awe. When Ishallr addressed him and referenced his previous sacrifice, Arlo smiled before responding.

"I had no idea back then that it wasn't the end. I hadn't expected to find myself standing here now. If it was a sacrifice, it was one willingly and gladly made," he said. When he was named Life Forged, however, Arlo dipped his head again; considering the declaration to be a great pronouncement and blessing. Even if he wasn't completely clear on what that meant. He'd learn more to be sure, and now, he suspected, wasn't the time to ask.

Prae, Darius and Eckman received similar blessings and then, Lyova. His little diri companion had known? All this time? And she'd been a willing a part of it all? It was a bit of a shock, yet Arlo couldn't help but grin a little. "I'm not sure how you've managed to keep such a secret all this time, my small friend," he said with a great deal of affection. Lyova's prolific word usage was legendary after all. Or at least it ought to be. And yet, he'd never really asked himself, or her, how it was she'd remained with him all this time. She'd been a gift from Jesine after all.

When she chose to stay however, even once she'd been freed to go and declined, Arlo couldn't have been more touched. If it had been possible for him to have valued her companionship more than he already did, to be even more fond of her, those things would have increased twofold and more. And she was much more than he'd ever recognized her to be. Lyova, had simply been enough. "We have had some pretty amazing adventures, haven't we?" he said. "You, me, then Vega, us all three together."

And of course, now there'd be a fourth member of their little family group. "I can't wait for our child to meet you Lyova. Thank you, for all you've done and for choosing to remain. It would never be the same, and I'd miss you more than I can possibly say." Way back then when he'd traveled the roads alone before meeting Vega, it had been only him and Lyova back then. And she'd been the best of company. Her new form of choice, however, appeared at his side and managed to take him unaware. And yet, he reached out a hand to touch the top of her head fondly. "I think this suits you very well."

The tiger made a similar choice, and then it appeared as if it was time for them to go. And yet, the work wasn't yet done. Arlo knew this already, though hadn't known for sure if the four of them present would have any part to play in that. The balance still needed to be restored, and so far as he was concerned, he was here to the end. And before he could even consider what their way back might have in store for them all, it was done and they were returned to the entrance of the Glass Temple.

No doubt, he'd rather never be that cold again. But in retrospect, the discomfort and trouble felt like a small price to pay. But there was more to be done, so with that in mind and Lyova at his side, Arlo followed the others into the temple.

Your Review
Arlo

Overview

Well well well! You know, when I wrote that thread with Arlo years ago, I had this end goal in mind and had the plot ready - so I'm very glad you're still here! Arlo was obviously in quite a situation here and I really enjoyed the way you played his reaction to seeing himself in perfect reflection in a statue of ice. Well done on your part in this event - fantastic writing! Enjoy your rewards!

Loot

When you return from The Feast, you return home to find a beautifully carved wooden box. The contents of this box include:
  • Icefire! & Hunting in Packs: Four ornamental doorstop-like figures. Made from what seems to be ice, they are the creatures Arlo saw Tiny little reptiles that stood upright on their hind legs, clawed front legs much shorter than the back. Large round, curious and flashing eyes. They looked as if they were made of living ice somehow, but their innards swirled with the colors of flame. These can be placed at a perimeter or point where they act as an alarm. When there is movement within a 40ft radius of one of them, Arlo will hear an alarm. The alarm can only be heard by Arlo and up to four other people he designates. He can remove access to hearing the alarm at any time, but can only give access twice a cycle. Each figure functions independently and may be accessed by different people if he chooses.
  • Words! ~ A story book, entitled "The Princess of Fection" - it is the tale of a princess who traveled the world but ends up back home (in Fection.....). It tells of all the many different languages she has learned on her travels and the glorious food she ate and the many adventures she had. When you read this it imparts one language (your choice) to your pc. This language is at Conversational level and does not count towards your Linguistics maximum number of languages. You may assume that you have the base requirements for this language and may progress it as usual if you choose to.
  • Urges! ~ A beautiful and very delicate-looking decanter which, once a trial, will create pure, clear water. The decanter is actually very tough and will hold up to four servings. Those who drink this water will have any negative effects from tiredness, tension etc, washed away with the drink. It leaves you feeling refreshed and clear-headed. It does not, however, heal wounds etc and will not combat magical effects.
  • Surprises! ~ A small chest of jewels and coins. Please add 5 WP to your total.
  • Malapropism! ~ The Very Pineapple of Usefulness. A small cut-glass pineapple which would fit in the palm of your hand. When placed on the ground it functions as a campfire in terms of warmth and providing a place to cook.
  • Vowels! ~ A piece of parchment. Twice a season, you may activate this and it folds itself into a small origami bird. You speak to the bird and give it a message - it "records" that message and then flies off to find the person the message is for. The message may be no longer than 30 words (contractions count for the correct number of words) and the bird will take the required amount of time to fly to the recipient. Upon arriving, the bird speaks your message (in your voice) and then flies back. If the recipient is dead or hidden by magical / immortal means - the bird will circle overhead when you summon it and not fly in any direction.
  • Fears! ~ A small bunch of 10 grapes. Each one is wonderfully sweet - eating 1 grape will heal you of minor injuries. This is cuts and bruises, scrapes and grazes etc. If you have moderate injuries (deeper cuts etc) then it will take 3 grapes. Major injuries take 6 grapes and someone can be brought back from a critical condition with 9 grapes. Please note, though - if you gave (for example) 1 grape to someone with moderate injuries, it would do nothing. You have an all-or-nothing grape situation.
  • A New Hope! ~ A single crystal star, glowing with hope. It is a single use item from Xiur which has 1 ability from his mark - it can be Adored level or below. It's single use - but you don't have to decide which ability till the moment it's used. Once the ability is used, the crystal star always glows and makes a beautiful nightlight.

Elisabeth

Overview

Holy mackerel! This was a tricky thread for Elisabeth ~ although I hope it was fun for you ~ as she tried so hard to do the right thing but just kept getting buffered around by circumstance. She rolled well with the punches, although you wrote her growing sense of desperation here really well. She's so determined to do the best she can. Lovely writing! Enjoy your rewards.

Darius

Overview

Darius The Brave! I was so impressed with how Darius handled this situation and, re-reading it I was right back to the visuals you constructed so expertly as he stood, expecting death. It gave me goosebumps then, and did the same thing this time. A truly brave individual who stands firm in the face of seemingly impossible odds. Awesome writing - enjoy your rewards!

Praetorum

Overview

Prae is an onion, I have decided. Many layers and so much more than one might assume. He's a thoughtful and considered PC and I get a real sense here of his actions being very precise, measured. Yet, underneath that there's a deep well of emotion and you play that really well. Really, really well. There are flashes of it, but he's so very controlled and it makes him an intriguing pc, it really does. Excellent writing! Enjoy your rewards!
