6th Ashan, 721
As dawn began to creep over the horizon, Vega was sitting with her cousins and her father. They were all - with the exception of Reese and his wife Lily - going on a resource-gathering for her. Vega - unsurprisingly - knew exactly what she wanted. "Ok, so you forage an' collect every type of sand you can. I especially want the blue an' the orange, a'right?" Huw, the eldest of the cousins, let out a puff of irritation, but Jo'qan - Vega's father - noted it down. "An' bring back some chickens, Papa. Chicken coops an' chickens here. Fresh eggs, too. An' I want feathers, so keepin' chickens makes sense. Glowin' ones, if you can." Jo'qan nodded, wrote it down. "I want you to forage an' pick up some bakers wheatwort, too. They're these mushrooms what grow everywhere, an' they're great. But don't go payin' for them if you can help it. Some cocolimes, if you would, too - an' if you can get a saplin' or two of them, that'd be great. Don't forget to get the tobacco, too, for Sir Chip. Different varieties." She looked at Shon, "You're the gardener among us. Anythin' else? Can we grow those sunburst fruit? Arlo loved cookin' with them. An' lets get some mushrooms on the trees what Sir Chip grew. Steppers grow on trees, can we do that?"
Thinking about it, she clicked her fingers. "Oh, an' those Bruised Mashroot. They're lovely they are. Dead easy to grow, too." Her father nodded, again. "Wood, an' kits Papa, too. Tools, you know? An, a kit for gardenin' an' one for needleworkin', too, please." She thought about it. "An chicken rearin' stuff, too. Hay an', " Her father, bless him, was dutifully writing down, but Huw spoke. "Eva. We know. We know. "
Vega glared at him. "You wouldn't have known the stuff for needleworkin' an' don't tell me you would have," Huw nodded. "This is true. Please, just tell us what you know we won't think of. I understand that, if we're getting chickens, we're getting things to care for chickens, too." It was a fair point, Vega thought. She thought about it. "Basketweavin' stuff, please. Lily's said she'll teach me some." Lily nodded and smiled. Vega wasn't sure whether it was the morning sickness of the fact that the woman was so irritating that made her feel sick. Still. "An' glass. I want to make a greenhouse here. So, lots of glass frames an' any fancy wood you can get your mitts on. I think that's it." As they stood to leave, she added. "But make sure that the needleworkin' includes stuff for leather an' all that, yeah?"
As they stood together, watching them, Vega had to hold back a smile as Reese spoke to her. "I wonder if it seems to them as though they are escaping, too?"
"Nah," Vega shot back. "It jus' looks that way to us." Looking at Reese, she smiled. "I'm right nervous about teachin' people. You know that." Reese nodded. "And you are fussing, too. I wonder if those two things are related?" Vega shoved him and Reese grinned. "Come, Eva, let's get ready."
It was at noon that they'd agreed to meet and Vega spent the few hours between watching the Waking Dreamer leave and then, making sure that they had all the supplies together. Vega knew that it was important that no one got different things, because she knew that the way she taught, she'd be doing it by example. So, when she told them to pick up the thing that looked like this - whatever it happened to be - they'd better have a "thing that looked like this".
She checked the supplies, and then checked them again. Then, when she was sure that she had everything that she needed, Vega and Reese made their way to the clearing where they were meeting six of the settlers and where, for better or worse, Vega was going to teach them how to make arrows.
