[Hopetoun] Feathers and flights

As dawn began to creep over the horizon, Vega was sitting with her cousins and her father. They were all - with the exception of Reese and his wife Lily - going on a resource-gathering for her. Vega - unsurprisingly - knew exactly what she wanted. "Ok, so you forage an' collect every type of sand you can. I especially want the blue an' the orange, a'right?" Huw, the eldest of the cousins, let out a puff of irritation, but Jo'qan - Vega's father - noted it down. "An' bring back some chickens, Papa. Chicken coops an' chickens here. Fresh eggs, too. An' I want feathers, so keepin' chickens makes sense. Glowin' ones, if you can." Jo'qan nodded, wrote it down. "I want you to forage an' pick up some bakers wheatwort, too. They're these mushrooms what grow everywhere, an' they're great. But don't go payin' for them if you can help it. Some cocolimes, if you would, too - an' if you can get a saplin' or two of them, that'd be great. Don't forget to get the tobacco, too, for Sir Chip. Different varieties." She looked at Shon, "You're the gardener among us. Anythin' else? Can we grow those sunburst fruit? Arlo loved cookin' with them. An' lets get some mushrooms on the trees what Sir Chip grew. Steppers grow on trees, can we do that?"

Thinking about it, she clicked her fingers. "Oh, an' those Bruised Mashroot. They're lovely they are. Dead easy to grow, too." Her father nodded, again. "Wood, an' kits Papa, too. Tools, you know? An, a kit for gardenin' an' one for needleworkin', too, please." She thought about it. "An chicken rearin' stuff, too. Hay an', " Her father, bless him, was dutifully writing down, but Huw spoke. "Eva. We know. We know. "

Vega glared at him. "You wouldn't have known the stuff for needleworkin' an' don't tell me you would have," Huw nodded. "This is true. Please, just tell us what you know we won't think of. I understand that, if we're getting chickens, we're getting things to care for chickens, too." It was a fair point, Vega thought. She thought about it. "Basketweavin' stuff, please. Lily's said she'll teach me some." Lily nodded and smiled. Vega wasn't sure whether it was the morning sickness of the fact that the woman was so irritating that made her feel sick. Still. "An' glass. I want to make a greenhouse here. So, lots of glass frames an' any fancy wood you can get your mitts on. I think that's it." As they stood to leave, she added. "But make sure that the needleworkin' includes stuff for leather an' all that, yeah?"

As they stood together, watching them, Vega had to hold back a smile as Reese spoke to her. "I wonder if it seems to them as though they are escaping, too?"

"Nah," Vega shot back. "It jus' looks that way to us." Looking at Reese, she smiled. "I'm right nervous about teachin' people. You know that." Reese nodded. "And you are fussing, too. I wonder if those two things are related?" Vega shoved him and Reese grinned. "Come, Eva, let's get ready."

It was at noon that they'd agreed to meet and Vega spent the few hours between watching the Waking Dreamer leave and then, making sure that they had all the supplies together. Vega knew that it was important that no one got different things, because she knew that the way she taught, she'd be doing it by example. So, when she told them to pick up the thing that looked like this - whatever it happened to be - they'd better have a "thing that looked like this".

She checked the supplies, and then checked them again. Then, when she was sure that she had everything that she needed, Vega and Reese made their way to the clearing where they were meeting six of the settlers and where, for better or worse, Vega was going to teach them how to make arrows.
Note: Everything is within her tier but, just in case, I've deducted 10 WP. Since this is building supplies etc, I thought it best.

Vega's skin has a reflective metallic sheen with a red glow. Her eyes still swirl biqaj colours, but one colour is always bright red which glows like fire. She has a bright red glow in her chest, situated directly under the mark of a heart (Daia mark) in the middle of a glowing silver dragon on her chest (Xiur). She's unnaturally warm to the touch

Reese and Lily were helping her and Vega felt very pleased about that. Because if it was just her and six people, that would be terrifying. But, in fact, it was three of them and six people. And, of course, it was still terrifying. But Vega refused to think of it as teaching. She wasn't teaching. She was demonstrating. Leading by example. She could do that. She could do that. So, she walked up and she looked at them. Six pairs of eyes looked back at her and Vega knew that, in this moment, she had to say it. "I'm right nervous about this," she said. "Like, my knees are actually shakin' right now." They were, it was not even a slight exaggeration. "Thing is this is teachin', an' no matter that I tell myself different, it is. An' I'm really not good at it." She smiled slightly. "But, I'm goin' to do the very best I can, an' I'd really appreciate it if you would jus' help me out a bit. You can do that by askin' questions, soon as you have them. An' if I'm goin' too fast or too slow, or you don't understand anythin' what's comin' out of my gob. Jus' say stop, an' we'll stop an' go back. Alright?"

They nodded and she saw that Lily smiled at her, encouragingly. "Alright, well, this is Reese, an' his wife, Lily. They're helpin' me for anyone who doesn't know them already." Vega played the fiddle here, every evening, and so she knew the people. Her family, though, tended to be a bit more private about things and so she made sure that they were introduced. Then, she nodded. "These are kits what we've put together for you. We're goin' to make arrows to-trial, an' we're going to make them with three different types of wood, an' three types of feather. " They nodded and Vega was quiet for a moment while they came up and collected their kits, and she gave them a bit of time to examine the contents before she started again.

"Right. So, three types of wood. This one is normal hardwood. This is charwood, an' this is phoenix wood. Feel tham, in your hands. Feel the weight an' the difference of them." She waited while they did this. In their packs were long and thin pieces of wood, which they would start with. "Things we need to watch for here, are that we want a piece of wood with a straight grain. The grain should go down the arrow shaft itself. It'll help you with the draw, an' the balance of the arrow." She held up the hardwood in her hand. "Look, I can see the grain, but more importan' than that, I can feel it. Run your hand along the arrow an' you'll feel it smooth. Careful, don't get splinters." She let them do that for a while, and then she went around and checked they were happy. Reese walked with her, and he asked questions here and there, too. Vega was pleased - him doing that made it alright for them to.

"Right, now, what we've got to do is get this arrow to the right size an' sanded down. I have this, it helps a lot." Reaching into her pocket, Vega brought out a small wooden tube. "It fits, exactly, over an arrow. So, if you've sanded too wide, it won't fit. If you've sanded too narrow, it'll get all waggly. When I'm gettin' close or if the wood is near to the right size already," The wood they were working with was, she'd made sure of it. "Then I attach it to the outside of the sandpaper." She paused, breathing in, and looked around. "Alright. We need to get these sanded. Sandin' somethin' to a straight tube is best done by usin' a straight tube of sandpaper. It's worth takin' the time now, an' gettin' it right." Vega had a tube of wood, wider than the other, and she put that around the piece of sandpaper she had. "Then, I put the shaft into that, an' tighten up the tube."

The equipment was there for them, and Vega was fully expecting to have to either do it for a few of them, or at least deal with a barrage of questions. But they watched her, she had demonstrated clearly and - as luck would have it - they'd all been paying attention and what she did seemed to work for them. Vega grinned as she saw them each do it, properly. Then, because she was who she was, she still went to each one of the six, checking their work. "Right, you lot have all been hidin' from me jus' how good at this you are, haven't you?" Allie, the woman she'd met previously, spoke up. "This is easier than it looks, I think you're better at this teaching than you give yourself credit for."

Vega smiled and she looked at Reese as he checked people's work. He nodded. "All good."

"Ok, well, the trick now is to make a few of each. Get used to the techniques, an' have a look at what the differences are between the different types of wood," Vega said. They did this, starting with the hardwood, and then moving on to the charwood and the phoenix wood. "They really are different, aren't they?" Allie said, and Vega nodded.

"Do you have a preference?" One of the settlers - a mixed-race chap who had a bit of the sev'ryn scruffyness about him, Vega thought - asked and she thought about it. "It depends, really. I'm not mad keen on the multi-coloured wood, it seems a bit showy. I reckon that stuff is better used for functional things an' things that benefit from lookin' pretty. Equally, it gives a nice touch, an' I like the feelin' of it. So. No, I don't. I don't think I have a preference, anyhow, I'll let you know, once we've finished makin' them."

As they continued to work, Vega said. "A'right, so we need to think about the length of your arrow. Bottom line there, is you want to stand, an' draw the piece of wood, like it were an arrow, with your bow. Do it in pairs, an' mark off the full length of the draw. Then, we add to it." Once they'd done that, Vega nodded. "Ok. Time to get cuttin', then. Before we do the finishin' of the shafts, lets get ourselves shafts what are the right length, an' then we'll cut the nock." They all watched then, as Vega pulled out a piece of equipment. "I use this. There isn't one for each of you, I don't have enough blades. But look, it's blades attached to a cylinder. We need to vice the shaft, then use this to cut. That way, the nock an' arrow shafts are equal depths an' lengths."

She did hers first, showing them, then one by one the six of them came up and did the same. Vega glanced at Reese as she did that, and he nodded. It was strange, she though, how such a simple thing as just having someone there to help meant that he didn't really have to. But he was there, and that meant a lot.

"Alrigh', so lets get these done, sand them best you can so you've got six in total - two of each type. Grab somethin' to eat, take a break, an' then in a half-break, we'll start talkin' about feathers an' flights."

And, slowly, she breathed out.

Comments: So, this is the thread where Vega asks her cousins to gather the sand! I do agree, she sounds like she knows exactly what she wants, and I have to admit, I like that my Glowing Chickens play a small part here. I hope that Vega will get a lot of glowing feathers from them!

Her family’s different reactions to telling them what she wants were entertaining to read. And after Reese mentioned it, I wonder if Vega’s fussing and being nervous about teaching are related. You described the way that she felt about teaching very well in my opinion.

Vega’s ability and her flag are very useful. I can’t help but wonder how this thread would have gone without them now though, and if the potential to become a good teacher is actually inside of her. Either way, I liked how she approached this. Her instructions were clear and easy to understand. She clearly knows a lot about what she’s teaching!

I was rather amused when all the settlers managed to do what she demonstrated properly. Do they have any idea what her flag and her ability do? Either way, this was an enjoyable thread, and I already look forward to reading (and of course reviewing) the sequel!

Enjoy your rewards!

P.S.: I was a bit unsure as to whether I should give you 5 or 10 Renown for this thread here. Ultimately, I decided to give you 5 Renown for this thread and 5 for the sequel as it’s more or less one big training session with a break in between. Let me know if you disagree, please!
