Abgrogators Abolish

Ashan 17, Arc 721

“Thorn, I’m afraid that I have to tell you that you smell quite terrible”, Lucia informed the Mortalborn in a cool tone of voice. “What happened to you? Did you accidentally fall into a tub full of peppermint extract?” she wanted to know, covered her nose with her hand and shuddered. The red head was aware that most people would be hesitant to criticize a famous doctor who had recently become a Baron, but she didn’t care. She’d never give anybody preferential treatment just because they were celebrity. She’d treat him as the strange young man that he was in her opinion.

“Do you like it?” Devin asked innocently and batted his eyelashes a bit before he claimed, smiling the brightest and most charming smile that he was capable of, “The smell of peppermint is actually a great stimulant. If you feel tired and lethargic, it can perk you right up. It can lead to greater alertness, better performance and greater motivation.” That was absolutely true, but it was not why he had used a generous amount of peppermint perfume and even rubbed a salve that contained peppermint under his nose.

They had decided to meet in the library with another classmate, study together and work on a little research project for university after Devin had finally finished his work as a doctor for the trial – which meant that he would have to face her again.

Rose Lefluer.

He really liked Rose’s sense of style, and what more, there was actually something kind of sweet about her, but her very, very floral perfume was almost impossible to bear. It made him sneeze, it made it hard for him to breathe, and it almost made him nauseous at times. For that reason, he had decided to use an intense perfume of his own so that he would hopefully not notice hers anymore. Of course, he would never tell anybody that. It was kind of embarrassing. Implying that he had doused himself in peppermint in order to do a better job when it came to studying was a much better explanation in his opinion …

… an explanation that caused Lucia to furrow her brow for a moment before she wanted to know, “If you are tired, why didn’t you just drink a cup of coffee, Thorn?”

“Because I can smell nice and feel more alert at the same time this way?” Devin asked and grinned which caused Lucia to roll her eyes. She was just about to ask him if he had already forgotten that she had called the way that he smelled “terrible” when Lysander, the classmate that they had been waiting for at the entrance to the library came into view.

The blonde who Devin had had an unfortunately mostly one-sided crush on for a while looked at the two of them for a moment before he came closer, grinned at them and asked, “Shall we go in? The sooner we start, the sooner we’ll be done. Honestly, I’m not sure why Professor Gir has been so fond of group projects recently, but anyway … after you?”

"By the way", he added as they went in. "I like your perfume. I love peppermint!"

Lucia just rolled her eyes again when she heard that.

This time, Devin resisted the temptation to hold his breath when he handed Rose Lefluer his coat (a very fancy deep red coat) so that she could deposit it in the coatroom – and stood directly in front of her desk rather than a meter or two away from it. When nothing happened – he couldn’t smell Rose’s very, very floral perfume, and his nose didn’t itch either – he took a deep breath. For a moment, his heart beat like crazy because he almost expected the effect to be delayed, but there still wasn’t anything!

He was so happy that he started to smile all over his face just as Rose asked him in a somewhat confused and very loud tone of voice (She couldn’t control her volume properly!), “Doctor Thorn? Are you alright? Is there anything I can help you with?”

“Oh no!”
the Mortalborn quickly assured her in a very cheerful tone of voice. “We are just doing some work for uni, and I already know where I can find the books that we’ll need. I really love the hat you are wearing to-trial, by the way!” he added which was more than mere flattery. That trial, Rose Lefleur was wearing a wide-brimmed hat with a broad pastel pink ribbon with a bit of tulle and a trio of delicate pastel pink, pastel blue and pale-yellow silk flowers. It was quite a wonderful hat in Devin’s opinion.

“I’m glad”, Rose remarked.

Devin who was still in an extraordinarily good mood because he had finally figured out a way to deal with her perfume bowed deeply, and then Lucia, Lysander and he went looking for their books. Since the incident with Nicholas (He didn’t understand how he could ever have found that guy attractive!), he made a real effort to be quiet and behave in the library because he wanted to show poor Rose that someone appreciated the things that she did.

He couldn’t help but wonder why she hadn’t noticed his perfume though. Maybe her perfume was so strong that she couldn’t smell anything else as well?

It was definitely possible!

With that thought in mind, the young man deposited his notebook and his pencil case on an empty table, and then he went looking for the books that they would need for their project, Lysander in tow. Lucia muttered something under her breath, and then she followed them.

Professor Gir had not only been rather fond of group projects recently; he had unfortunately also decided to up the ante. This time, he had not given them a list of questions that they had to answer. He had told them to go and research Abrogation and figure out what it was all about. In his opinion, students that would be finishing their Charter soon and might be writing a thesis needed to be capable of researching independently and figuring things out on their own.

Devin was by no means a masterful researcher, but he knew that books on magic could usually be found in the magic section, so that’s where he went – past the big wooden cabinet that contained the library catalog with information on all the books and where you could find them. He actually knew what a library catalog was, but he wasn’t sure how you were supposed to use it, and besides, standing in front of an actual bookshelf and touching the books was much more exciting. You never knew what exactly you might find!

So, while Lucia perused the library catalog and pulled various index cards out (She said she would do it the proper way!), Devin knelt in front of a shelf that looked especially promising, pulled different books out and put them back until he found a very thick book with a red cover that looked incredibly promising. Its title was Arcana for Beginners and it promised an overview of all the domains of magic that was easy to understand.

If you wanted to figure out what Abrogation was all about without having to put up with unnecessary details, Devin, decided, such a book was probably an excellent starting point!

With that thought in mind, he carried the book over to the table, opened it and leafed to the table of contents. A moment later, he had found the chapter on Abrogation, moved to the page in question and started reading, furrowing his brow in irritation as he did so – because he didn’t like what the book said at all and wished he were just able to erase Abrogation from existence.

He had neglected that particular domain so far because the name didn’t sound very interesting in his opinion. He wished he had kept on doing so even though it might have caused problems as far as university was concerned. In his opinion, Abrogation was absolutely vile!

Abrogation, he read silently and grabbed his pen because he might as well do what Professor Gir had said and take notes because the chance of unlearning what he had learned was unfortunately miniscule at best, at least in the near future. Is a domain of magic that touches upon all other domains of magic and reverses, abolishes, or rejects, every single one of them at the same time. It is, apart from a few exceptions, defensive in nature.

There are three degrees of preparation when it comes to casting an Abrogation spell,
he continued to write and abruptly put his pen away again because he just hated Abrogation too much. Reversing magic? Who would ever want to do such a thing? Magic was awesome! If he ever met the person that had invented Abrogation, he would give them a talking-to!

Or maybe he’d just punch them instead even though he normally never punched people because he might get hurt, too!

He would never let anybody take his magic away – apart from Saoire, maybe. If she resurrected Baron Smooglenuff – he still hadn’t given up hope – he’d gladly offer her his spark!

The three degrees of preparation are, Devin wrote in his very messy handwriting, Preemptive, Reactive and Replicative. Preemptive is about expending your own ether into the area around you and creating a field that passively dampens any and all magic that passes through it. Reactive means that you try to neutralize the structure of a purposed cast as it is being focused. Replicative essentially overlaps the target with multiples of itself to deny the penetration of the hostile force, he continued, pretty much copying what the book said only in order to set his pen down again and furrow his brow very, very deeply.

According to the blurb that was on the cover of the book, it was supposed to be easy to understand, but it sounded like a bunch of nonsense to him regardless. Why did scientific books always have to be written in such a weird language that you almost needed a translator, anyway? Why couldn’t they just say what it was all about? Reactive was about countering the anticipated spell, for example – at least that’s the conclusion that he had come to after he had racked his brain for a bit and almost given himself a headache in the process. You didn’t need all that crap about neutralizing the structure of a purposed cast!

Maybe, he decided, he should focus on the necessity of making magic easy to understand if he continued his studies. He liked mutations too much though! Maybe, he’d just specialize in two different areas – and tell all those stuck-up scientists how it should really be done!

Feeling much more motivated again, he turned the page because he had already filled the first page of his notebook and leafed through his book some more. They were supposed to research what Abrogation was all about. Mutations were an important part of every magic, so he’d take a look at those next – except that Arcana for Beginners only contained a tiny paragraph on Abrogation mutations. It said that they often involved warped body parts. He wasn’t sure what that meant. Did Abrogation mutations cause your limbs to stick out at an odd angle, give you a triangular nose or square ears?

“Are you stuck as well?” he heard Lysander’s friendly voice. They had just decided that they would begin their group project by researching Abrogation independently and checking different books before they compared the results and filled in the blanks together. Devin had thought that that would be an excellent idea, but it wasn’t quite going according to plan – apart from in Lucia’s case. The redhead, he noticed, was writing like there was no tomorrow and not paying any attention to what the boys were doing!

“This book doesn’t really cover Abrogation mutations”, Devin muttered and showed it to Lysander who smiled gently before he leaned across the table and took a closer look.

“The subtitle of your book is Definitions, Techniques and Technicalities”, Lysander remarked. “It doesn’t seem to focus on that particular aspect of magic. Here, take a look at this book here”, he suggested and handed him one of the books that were lying in front of him. “It contains an entire chapter on Awakenings and such”, he explained and smiled again, in a way that made Devin wonder if he might have a chance, after all (His liking his incredibly minty perfume had already been a good sign!). The season before, Lysander had told him that he had just separated from his girlfriend and wasn’t interested in dating. Maybe, he could also just invite him sometime though, bake a cake for him and make music with him – and see how they got along in private?

Lysander played the harp, and he played the lute!

Re: Abgrogators Abolish

A couple of bits, and the consultation of a third book later, Devin had finally found out that Abrogation mutations often involved oddly colored skin, elongated fingers, exaggerated bone definitions or loose skin – which didn’t sound very appealing, to be honest. In fact, Abrogation Awakenings (which were the kind of mutations that you got when you progressed in your magic) reminded him a lot of the Overstepping mutations of other domains – which subsequently made him wonder what happened to Abrogators when they overstepped.

Maybe they got twice as ugly as other mages? Overstepping mutations were often kind of ugly!

Speaking of mutations … Devin’s eyes widened as something suddenly occurred to him, and he quickly leafed through a different section of the book that he had just been reading. His specialty were mutations, but there was one domain of magic that he knew next to nothing about when it came to mutations – Empathy. He didn’t like Empathy very much because of all the tailoring (He had been a tailor’s apprentice once, and his master had been quite mean!), so he had only learned as much as he absolutely had to about it.

If he really wanted to become Idalos’ foremost expert on mutations though, he realized, he needed to leave the past behind!

As he should have expected, Empathy mutations were often mental or psychological and caused the mind to become muddled (Which made him wonder how you were supposed to tell an Empathy mutation from a psychological problem!). he was just wondering if he should head over to the science section and see if any of the books on medicine or psychology would reveal more when he heard Lucia’s slightly annoyed voice,

“Thorn, what exactly are you doing now? I’m not sure if this is”, she continued and leaned over to him. “This definitely doesn’t have anything to do with Abrogation. I’d like to be done with our project before it’s time for dinner, thank you very much!”

“This is pretty much extra credit”,
Devin pointed out and flashed her a grin. “I’m already thinking about what I want to do after my Charter. Besides, you were just reading some sort of biography!” he told her and gestured towards the book in front of her that had the portrait of a man on the cover and was called, Wolfgang Wolfe. My Life and my Works. That was much worse than reading something about Empathy in his opinion!

“He was a scientist. Sometimes, books about the lives of scientists can be a useful source well”, Lucia insisted, harumphed and went back to her work. Lysander and Devin looked at each other, grinned – and eventually proceeded to continue to work on their own research. Everything went comparatively well. When the time for them to compare what they had found out so far and combine it had come, they realized that their independent research had led to them independently overlooking one important aspect of Abrogation though!

The initiation!

Oh no!

Lucia grumbled a bit as if it had all been Devin’s and Lysander’s fault and she hadn’t really forgotten anything before she headed over to one of the bookshelves without further ado in order to procure new reading material. Another half a break passed before they were finally done, at which point Lysander let out a loud yawn before he asked Lucia and Devin,

“Shall we head to a café now?”

Devin grinned and nodded enthusiastically, and even Lucia didn’t seem to be averse to the idea!

Experience: +10 xp

Knowledge:

Discipline: Resisting the temptation to hold your breath
Medicine: Peppermint smell is a stimulant
Research: Abrogation: Definition
Research: Abrogation: The three degrees of preparation
Research: Abrogation: What mutations commonly look like
Research: Empathy: Mutations are often mental or psychological

Skillplay: Appropriate to level

Loot: None.

Injuries/Overstepping: None.

Renown: None.

Comments: I’m picturing Devin Thorn and Rose Lafluer in a sort of superhero battle or wizard duel of applied scents, canceling each other out, seeing which one has the greater perfume powers!

It’s good to see another Lucia and Lysander thread. Their interactions always spice things up. And ignoring the card catalog and just browsing the stacks even when the assignment is important sounds like a very Devin thing to do.

Devin’s revulsion at the very idea of Abrogation was amusing, and his logic is impeccable: if magic is cool, Abrogation is, by definition, un-cool, or even anti-cool.

Let me know if either of you have any questions/feedback. Enjoy your rewards!
