[Haven] One Bad Day

30 Ashan 721
The ring Balthazar had been given by Saoire to link him and Elisabeth seemed to grant Balthazar a sixth sense- it would have probably felt more like an eighth sense if he still had his other magics but without them it was the only special sensing he had. He always knew when she needed him. It was like a voice whispered at the back of his mind, reminding him to go check on her. However over the last two trials that voice had screamed at Balthazar thrice and he could only assume the volume correlated to the danger she was in. The first time it happened he was concerned but he allowed Silk, Ronan, and Balder to convince him not to do anything about it. Then he'd seen Saoire and for a little while he was confident in his choice. He kept working on their house and tried to make everything look decent for when she returned.

He trained the settlers at night, got back to work in the morning, and continued going about his business as he always did. He had an uneasy feeling in his stomach for the majority of the time before feeling that same intense call. Elisabeth was in danger. She'd been in danger twice now in a short few trials and possibly needed help countless times within that same span (it was hard to always interpret what the ring was trying to tell him). He tried to tell himself he had trained her well and not to worry but he could never quite convince himself that there was nothing to be concerned about. He never could when it came to her. She wouldn't have wanted him to do anything dramatic or dangerous, at least he thought she wouldn't, but he couldn't help the impulse.

Balthazar was standing in the Ashwoods with a group of settlers holding axes and hacking away at trees when the dark clouds formed over Faldrass. They'd discovered the strange but beautiful trees to the south of Haven a few trial ago and decided they would harvest wood from it for the rest of the building they needed, but that is a story for a different time. At the moment the group of settlers had broken into pairs to work in tandem with each other, including Balthazar. One swung an axe into the tree, then the man on the other side swung. It was easier than working at it on their own and Balthazar thought it would help foster more positive relationships to turn their harvesting wood into a team activity. Everything was going fine, the dark clouds didn't seem too terrible, and then his ring began to scream at him again. Balthazar's eyes widened and he looked to the darkness above them. That could not have been a coincidence. "Everyone, with Balder back to the settlement!" Balthazar shouted suddenly, prompting confusion for a few trills before the rain began to fall. The settlers seemed to figure out what was coming and they picked up as much of the wood as they could carry back with them before taking off towards their homes, guided by Balder who had been on the trip with them.

Balthazar on the other hand ran through the Ashwoods and came out on the beach with Miranda Preston trailing behind him, small pellets of ice beginning to pour from the skies above them. Balthazar looked out at the land in the distance, the other islands, and saw similarly darkened clouds gathering. What in the Beneath is going on? It was not long before Silk and Ronan found Balthazar down on the beach where massive waves were crashing violently into the shore. Tib'ron and Trean were shortly behind them, having detected the storm coalescing above the island and decided to rally to figure out a response. Without Kura or Rand there to give immediate orders in the crisis the situation was left to their qualified judgement.

"What's going on?" Silk asked as the air grew colder and the small pellets of ice began to grow larger. Balthazar rubbed the ring on his finger with his other hand, looking out towards the mainland where it seemed similar black clouds were gathering. Elisabeth had gone to research some of the things she'd seen in her visions. His thoughts of her lead to thoughts of Vri and the map. He turned looking past the volcano in the distance towards the towering Scalvoris Mountains on the horizon.

The map that had appeared after praying to Vri had included the mountains with impressive detail. It was one of the few spots other than Faldrass depicted on the map. Then Balthazar noticed that the storm was not spread over the whole sea, it was gathering in specific places like Faldrass, the mainland, and the mountains. He could not see them in great detail but he could see the darkness amassing there like the darkness gathering over Faldrass. It couldn't have been a coincidence... but what was it?

"Elisabeth is in danger." Balthazar said, not quite explaining what was happening at all. "The ring warned me and then the storm hit." Balthazar elaborated further to those gathered around him while he kept shifting his gaze from the mainland to the mountains off in the distance.

"I'm sure she'll be alright." Silk tried to reassure him. All three of the Haven guards had decided that they preferred when Balthazar was not in prison so they were always watching to keep him from doing something rash and they thought he would be fine until Elisabeth went away. Saoire's ring seemed almost like a curse while he had to serve out his sentence. He could feel that she needed him but he could do nothing to help her from where he was... his eyes shifted down to the paradigm around his wrists.

"I'm going to make damn sure of it."

"No, go back to your house, the girl will be fine." Tib'ron said in a stern voice as his and tightened around the hilt of his sword. He hadn't drawn it yet but the intention was clear and Trean standing a few feet to the left with his bow in hand only further drove the point home. They were trying to intimidate him and he assumed it was because they wanted to take control of the situation before he did. Maybe they thought they were more fit to manage the crisis than him because he'd had a bad trial and cut his hair? Tib'ron continued, "You are to focus on getting better and hel-"

"I'll give you something to focus on, you-" Balthazar's voice trailed and he looked over at Trean who had nocked an arrow on his bow. "If you shoot at me, you better make it count because you won't get a second one." Miranda was behind Balthazar and though he could not see it, she had her hand on the hilt of her sword as well. They had all watched Balthazar train his settlers at night so they had seen what he could do without magic, but they would do their job if he tried to leave.

"Black, just go back inside and focus on the settlers. I'm sure Elisabeth will be fine." Miranda insisted from a little bit behind him. Ronan, sensing a coming conflict, slowly shifted his hand to his blade as well though it was clear who he would strike at given he was eyeing Trean. Ronan quietly shifted closer to the archer and Silk looked around as if everyone had gone mad with spite.

"No!" Balthazar spat the word defiantly, "That is not good enough! I am tired of all of you pretending that you know what is best! Do any of you have any idea what is-" Lightning struck the beach beside them once and a loud clap of thunder washed out whatever words Balthazar was speaking. The man shifted away from where the lightning had just hit in surprise and then he looked at those around him just in time for a second bolt to strike in the settlement. "Shit!" He cursed, irritated that fate pulled him one way when he wanted to go the other. He looked at his two loyal guards and then the three Flame Troopers around him. "Have it your way, we help them, come on!" and then he ran towards Haven to help his people manage the chaos unfolding.

Lightning continued to strike and hail the size of caudori fists continued crashing down furiously across the island and settlement while Balthazar, Miranda, Trean, Tib'ron, Silk, and Ronan moved up through the chaos engulfed settlement. The storm had come so suddenly that many inside the haven didn't know what to do, so Balthazar and all the guards made it clear, shouting in a more or less unified voice for everyone to get inside.

Renown: +5

Balthazar continues to struggle with trust, and with his inability to dominate every situation with magic. It is good that he did not escalate the situation with the guards further; people could have ended up hurt or worse, Balthazar would be fugitive and outlaw, and Elisabeth wouldn’t have ended up any safer.

Likewise, I wish the guards hadn’t been so dismissive and patronizing of Balthazar’s concerns, nor quick to escalate the tension. It doesn’t sound like they did much to find out what Balthazar was thinking. It will be interesting to see what else happens going forward.
