Re: [Haven] The Sword of The Evening

Elisabeth's steel smacked the wooden staff upwards but it hit nowhere near as hard as it would have needed to in order to disarm the former mage who brought the bottom end of the staff forward in response to her strike- attempting to smack her with it. The mistake in Balthazar's approach was that by holding the staff in the middle and striking with both ends rather than holding it at one end, he sacrificed a lot of the range he would have normally had. His strike ended up colliding with one of Elisabeth's and Balthazar found himself on the retreat for a few trills, blocking her swipes with his staff while trying not to lose any ground. She was fast with her sword and after a few strikes, her sword slipped passed Balthazar's staff and smacked him on the side of his abdomen. Balthazar pulled back out of her range and held up a hand before checking his side for blood. She hadn't cut him but the smack stung.

"Well done." He said before moving over to the bag and pulling out another steel sword. Balthazar swung it in the air a few times and then turned to face Elisabeth again. He nodded and a trill later hurled the wooden staff at her with his left hand. It was a bad throw but the staff was large and would still hit her if she did nothing about it. Then, while the staff flew through the air, Balthazar moved in with his steel sword swiping upwards at Elisabeth before turning his wrist and following with a downward swipe in the opposite direction.

Arc 721, 18 Ashan

Elisabeth’s moves against the staff were experimental at best. She knew Balthazar wasn’t as experienced with the weapon as he was a blade but then again, she wasn’t very experienced fighting against someone with a staff…so they were about on equal footing.

The young woman fought until one of her blows landed, watching Balthazar pull back and check himself. She knew was part of the sword she had struck him, but there was always the chance for accidents in training. Words quickly came out of her mouth. “Are you alright?” Sapphire eyes full of concern but it seemed the concern was unwarranted, congratulating her. Breathing a sigh of relief, she grinned at him. “Don’t scare me like that. I like all your pieces right where they are, thank you very much.”

As he pulled a blade out of the bag, she smiled. Finally, they were getting down to business, but he did something completely unexpected by hurling the staff at her. It was a clumsy throw meant to distract her from his true attack, but the problem was that the only way to get away from the staff flying through the air was to move, although she wasn’t sure she could move fast enough….so she got creative.

It was never a good idea to take one’s eyes off the attacker, but she didn’t have a choice. She saw what Balthazar was doing and had only a split second to do what she needed to do if she could do it. It was really more of a working theory than anything but technically the staff wasn’t in Balthazar’s hands…

Looking up at the staff, Elisabeth began to move while calling air, listening for the tell-tale laugh before having a gust of air nudge the staff’s trajectory…just a bit. With that and her movement, it should have landed just to the side of her while she blocked Balthazar’s incoming strikes, countering with a downward thrust and then an upward one. His superior strength, however, managed to break through her block, sword crashing into her shoulder and knocking her back several steps, wincing. Holding up her hand, she breathed through it for a second. It was a fair hit, but it had stung and there certainly would be bruises the next trial.

Grabbing the sword again, she moved in fast, swinging with a few jabs at the torso, trying not to work the shoulder too much but finding herself unable to. She remembered something Prae had said once about using meditation during combat to set aside pain. He had warned that one shouldn’t do it for long because pain was a natural indicator that something was wrong…but certainly she could do it long enough to get through their sparring match?

Breathing in and out, finding a rhythm with the waves crashing on the beach, Elisabeth visualized pushing the pain out of her shoulder, just for a moment, letting her swing against Balthazar, slicing downward and immediately moving to a guard, waiting for the counter.

"Well then be careful not to remove them from where they are." Balthazar replied quickly when Elisabeth said she liked his pieces where they were. Then he launched into his attack, tossing the staff and moving in with the blade. Elisabeth responded with Defiance and Balthazar noticed it. Even without his sparks, he felt the wind shift on his skin and he saw the color change in Elisabeth's eyes but he didn't let it slow him down. He'd blasted plenty of people with wind and figured he could power through whatever breeze Elisabeth tried to conjure to knock him off his feet. He only realized she was using the wind to deal with the staff when he reached her with the sword. Elisabeth was new to manifesting the elements and doing so would cost her time and focus that Balthazar meant to capitalize on.

The staff was blown aside moments before it would have hit her, and then their steel collided. They trades a few swipes, swords colliding quickly before Balthazar's strength overcame Elisabeth's defenses and he struck her shoulder. Elisabeth moved back a few steps and Balthazar did not press his attack. She seemed more hurt by it than the punches that had paralyzed portions of her shoulder earlier so he began to worry that he'd cut her. He was going to end the session, thinking they'd had enough for the trial, when suddenly Elisabeth launched into another attack. Her blade moved towards his torso and he parried it aside each time, matching her better with a sword than with the staff.

Elisabeth found her center and slashed downwards then Balthazar's sword rose to meet her's. The blades locked and he pushed her arm up just enough to get the angle he needed- then his fist fired with the speed (but not force) of a canon ball to strike Elisabeth in the bicep of her sword arm. From there his free hand would shift down to Elisabeth's wrist, trying to pry to sword from her shocked hand before she could stop him.

Silver was the color of air, and those were the ribbons that swirled within her gaze as the staff was knocked just off course enough to fall to their side. Of course, Elisabeth had been prepared for what was to happen, knowing that to use the magic cost her in other areas.

The strike to the shoulder hurt, but Elisabeth had been trained by a Yari and as such, knew that stopping wasn’t an option. She didn’t want him going any easier on her than he would anyone else simply because he loved her. It was because he loved her that she needed to be ready for anything, so he wouldn’t worry so much about her.

Staff handled, she had moved on to the mediation, hoping it would ease the pain. It did – to a certain extent. More specifically, it took the edge off enough that she could continue without wincing so much. It wouldn’t last long, but she really didn’t need much time.

With a blade, she and Balthazar were much more evenly matched…although he could use any other discipline at any time to augment the swordplay. And that’s exactly what happened when his fist came into her bicep. She had to admit – it was a gooooood move. He would find that she was unable to keep hold of the sword due to his superior strength, although she tried.

With Balthazar so close though, his hand around her wrist, it seemed a waste of what currently appeared to be more of a grappling session, so she took advantage of a lesson learned earlier. Facing him, she simply spun under the hold, turned her body away from him, and slammed herself, whole body, back into his, foot crashing down on top of his, attempting to get him to let her wrist go. The first part looked a bit like a fancy dance, and truly, that is where the idea came from. Elisabeth had needed a way to get herself facing away from him within the bounds of her current constraints.

She might have been disarmed, but that didn’t mean she didn’t still have options.

Elisabeth spun under his grip and Balthazar batted her on the backside with his sword, reminding her that since he controlled her sword arm his blade would have been more free to land a killing blow. She shifted a little quicker than he was expecting, the small smack on the bum not nearly enough to stop her now that she'd commit to her motion, and Balthazar let his sword fall aside as a more mischievous idea came to his mind. The moment she took to turn her body away from his betrayed her intentions and when she threw the whole of her weight back to slam into Balthazar, his foot shot out and kicked Elisabeth's out from under her before she could land her stomp. However that did not stop her momentum either and it was not meant to. All the kick was meant to do was knock her off balance while she attacked. As she crashed into him, Balthazar wrapped his arms around her and let them fall.

He hit the sand with a thud, Elisabeth trapped in his arms atop of him while they writhed in the sand- probably not in the way Elisabeth would have preferred. "I'll call that a draw." He said in a clearly joking tone before squeezing Elisabeth gently and letting her go. He didn't push her off of him, instead laying comfortably enough on the sand with her there. "Unless you want to go another round?" He nudged her in the side and then looked up at the stars for a few trills while Elisabeth either settled or got up.

Elisabeth wasn’t sure where things went wrong, but in the end, she really didn’t care. They went down in a heap on the warm sand, laughing softly as she landed on top of him, blades tossed to the side. Once she realized Balthazar was playing with her, she knew the session was over and that was fine with her.

Perhaps it was true that it wasn’t exactly the way she would have preferred to be in his arms. It was, however, perfect. Mostly because it was him and she was in his arms, which had happened very little since being in Haven. He was smiling and joking with her, and that meant the world to her.

Getting up wasn’t an option. Nope. Wasn’t going to happen. He seemed content to let her remain where she was and that was enough for her, settling against him a bit more comfortably as her raven curls splayed against him, letting her own eyes float up to the stars. “I think a draw sounds good.”

The young mage was sore and would have a whole lot of bruises the next trial, but she wasn’t thinking about that. “I’m right where I want to be,” she said, speaking softly. Elisabeth had never spoken truer words.

What she didn’t want to do is drown the moment in words, however. She was quickly learning that they didn’t need words between them. Having each other was enough.

As moments go, when she looked back on them in the future, that moment on the beach in Haven would be one of her favorites.

Thread Comments: Sometimes you just need a good ol’ sparring thread, and this one was fun to read. You guys definitely need to get some practice weapons and safety gear, though. Injuries could have been much more serious, especially when you were using your real weapons. ‘Nuff said.
