Immortal Kombat: Faldrun

12 Ashan 720
On another fateful night, Balthazar would find himself standing before the warrior shrine looking over the Immortal's who remained. The statues of Faldrun, Delroth, Moseke, Edasha, Qylios, Lisirra, Karem, and Chrien still stood. Llaren and Treid's statues sat in ruin, little more than the dust that they'd been reduced to. It had been longer this time than the last gap between his dreams of combat. Life had become better for the aspiring mage. He was closer now than he'd ever been to becoming an Element. Whether it was his aspirations to join the Flame Troopers or the recent news that Rharne was under siege from the flameborn, Balthazar's eyes shifted over the statues and he moved slowly to the one he felt called to him the most this time... Faldrun. As he'd done both times before, Balthazar touched the stone where Faldrun's name was inscribed on it.

Faldrun's name burned bright at Balthazar's touch, like a fire set free. The statue combust into flames and a fire spread up Balthazar's arm, quickly burning the mage to ash- only Balthazar did not panic, he embraced the flame as it consumed him entirely. The ash that he became was blow south by the winds until it came to rest in a pile at the foot of a volcano far from the island temple Balthazar had been at. Balthazar emerged from the pile of ashes, gasping as life returned to him. He crawled from the pile onto the sharp rocks leading up the side of the volcano, trying desperately to refill his lungs. Before long the sound of battle being waged around him drew Balthazar's focus. There were hundreds of men and women locked in seemingly indiscriminate battle around him.

The ground shook violently and Balthazar looked up to the smoke billowing from the peak of the volcano. Faldrun. Balthazar's eyes narrowed and he began the long trek up. The ground grew warmer as he came closer to The Great Fire and eventually Balthazar came upon an opening in the rocks which lead to a narrow sliver of land stretching out over the sea of magma slowly churning in the mouth of the volcano.

"Who are you?" Faldrun demanded from atop the volcano where he sat upon a fiery throne watching the warring tribes below him.

"I am a combatant." Balthazar responded stoically. As the words escaped him an understanding seemed to pass between Balthazar and Faldrun who stood from his throne of fire. The throne dissipated behind the Immortal as he stepped onto the thin pathway of land jutting into the mouth of the volcano. The pathway Balthazar stood upon now. Balthazar could feel the ground heat up beneath his feet as The Great Fire stepped on it.

"Then you will burn like the others." Faldrun held his hand out to the side and a long flame manifested in his hand which slowly hardened into a spear. Balthazar widened his stance and held his hands with his palms out towards Faldrun.

"I don't burn." Balthazar struck first wit two swift jabs propelling two wind blasts at the Immortal. Faldrun charged with his spear, the first blast striking his shoulder ineffectively and the second only seeming to slow his down a little. But Balthazar still had some time. He stomped and two chunks of rock broke free from the floor. With another two jabs the rocks flew through the air towards Faldrun as he closed in. He dodged the first only for the second to strike him in the legs, knocking his feet from under him. Balthazar tried to move quickly, sweeping his arms to the right and coaxing the wind to blow Faldrun off the ledge.

It worked. The wind rolled Faldrun over the edge before he could react and the Immortal crashed headfirst into the molten rocks below. Balthazar neared the edge to watch the Immortal as he flailed in pain and agony but there was no such show to see when Balthazar looked over. Immortal of Fire. The volcano began to tremble and tendrils of flame shot forth from the magma, whipping around wildly as they blindly struck at Balthazar.

The Defier leapt left and right trying to avoid the flames. When he reached out to take control of them, they didn't bend to his will for even a trill so Balthazar resorted to the other three. Strong wind blasts tore apart flaming tendrils that got too close and Balthazar quickly realized this fight couldn't be won in the the mouth of the volcano. He spun, conjuring a small tornado to both lift himself out of the volcano and to destroy the flaming tendrils coming after him.

Balthazar took to the skies where he found refuge for a trill before a ball of fire soared passed him. Looking back to the volcano Balthazar saw Faldrun flying after him with a similarly constructed tornado of flames. Balthazar pivoted, trying to get over the water but Faldrun had closed in quickly and tackled Balthazar out of the air. They crashed together into the sharp rocks at the base of the volcano. The rocks softened for Balthazar as he collided with them but not for Faldrun. Earth was not his domain.

Faldrun rose slowly, some of the sharp rocks sticking out of his back and side whereas others fell to the floor leaving only dozens of small incisions and gashes. Balthazar stood a little quicker and when Faldrun turned to him he received a swift jab across the jaw. Faldrun stumbled slightly, catching himself on the rising side of the volcano while Balthazar braced for a counterattack. Faldrun coughed and for a moment Balthazar thought he had an opening, then the stones by Faldrun's hands began to glow red hot and and Immortal swiped his hand towards Balthazar, flinging molten stone towards him. Balthazar braced with his forearm and a stone wall shot up from the floor to defend him. Faldrun's molten stone splashed against it and then Balthazar began quickly jabbing the wall. His hands moved faster and faster- just tapping the stone before pulling back and thrusting forward again. One punch, two, ten, fifteen- his arms were moving fast now and with every hit a stone spike fired from the wall at Faldrun.

The Immortal manifested a wall of white flame which turned the stones to ash as they passed through it but the ash kept coming. Faldrun prepared a ball of white flame in his right hand, his left holding the wall of flame and then he hurled it into the remains of the stone wall Balthazar was hiding behind. The wall exploded and Balthazar was nowhere to be seen until suddenly he appeared in a burst of blue fire above Faldrun and dropped down at him. Faldrun turned his shield upright and Balthazar could do little but crash into it- well that wasn't entirely true.

Balthazar began to spin, cocooning himself in blue flames as he crashed into the white fire shield of Faldrun's making. The flames danced off each other and the element forgot or deferred the mage passing through for the trills that he did. Balthazar slipped through the shield of fire and socked Faldrun across the jaw. The Immortal stumbled backward and Balthazar advanced. A punch to the solar plexus, a missed jab, an uppercut- he had Faldrun on the retreat and the Immortal was retreating towards the sea. Then Faldrun caught Balthazar's fist. His hand was hot and quickly grew hotter as fire licked around Balthazar's arm, burning away his flesh. The pain was as shocking as Balthazar's response.

Balthazar fired lightning from the fingertips of his left hand which struck Faldrun in the chest and quickly spread over his body, burning the Immortal of fire. Faldrun released Balthazar and fell backwards into the shallow water of this dark dream sea, convulsing as the electricity ran through his body. For a trill Balthazar ceased his attack, he nursed his charred left arm as he watched Faldrun convulse... but then Faldrun began to turn over. He was getting up and Balthazar reached both hands out this time, firing a seemingly endless torrent of lightning into the sea and the Immortal who shook and screamed as his body shriveled and burned in the water. Balthazar did not stop until Faldrun lay face down in the water, smoking and charred.

The battle waging around the volcano seemed to cease and the frequent tremors stopped as the waves slowly tugged the Immortal of turmoil out to sea- but then suddenly Faldrun's hand reached out, gripping some wet sand and tugging himself back towards Balthazar. Surprising. Balthazar raised his hand as if he meant to fire more lightning into the crawling Immortal but he didn't. Instead he moved his hands in a small circle as if spinning an invisible wheel and a large wave pulled Faldrun back into the sea before hoisting him high and-

Impaling him on a large stone spike Balthazar coaxed from the volcano. And so the Immortal died. There was an odd still that passed with Faldrun's demise. All the faceless warriors on at the base of the volcano stood silently watching Balthazar and he watched them in return. The world slowly faded into darkness and Balthazar awoke.

Defiance: Skin always glows faintly and he is warm to the touch. His is also the center of a field of static electricity so people get shocked touching him on occasion.
Rupturing: Orange etheric cracks spider-web up his arms to his elbows. His eyes and the glowing cracks going down his cheeks glow dark blue.
Transmutation: He has a series of emerald, glowing cracks on his right pectoral.
Bellinos: His fingernails are always black. The color fades into his fingers.
Celarion: A dim glowing ring surrounds his left forearm.
Palenon: A silver lightning shaped mark about the size of a hand stretching up towards his torso.

  • Oops, Oops, Ouch: Balthazar Black has twenty scars across his back from a lashing as well as scars on his hands and arms from jagged rocks on Faldrass. There are two scars on the sides of his abdomen from being stabbed and a slash across his back which blends in with the whip scars.

Comments: I enjoyed this skirmish with the Immortal of fire. The descriptiveness of every aspect, from the statue coming to life, Balthazar suddenly finding himself in the midst of a pitched battle, to the action, and then the stage fatality at the end really brought the prose to life. Although, it wasn't really a stage fatality if Balthazar himself created the stone spike... Nevertheless, I fear for more of these dream Immortals.

Enjoy the points! Great writing!
