How does knowledge work? I see some people putting skill: some text here, and some people just saying skill: x2

Short answer is, yes they both work.
Recently there was a switch from the old format with the text (e.g. Skill: text description here), to simplifying it so that just the number of knowledges is needed, and they don't need to be unique in description (e.g. Skill x3).
The intent was to simplify the process for reviewers and that the descriptions didn't necessarily add much.
However, some players still enjoy writing descriptions, so they still request their skills with the descriptive text.
