Mathias Blackwood
Return of Light and Rebirth of Storm's Edge
1 Ashan 720

Oh Immortals it was actually going to happen... Mathias was going to dance. It wasn't the first time he'd danced but he certainly couldn't remember any of the other times now. Worse yet, he was dancing with someone he didn't want to embarrass himself in front of. Gennadiya seemed confident and for that reason alone Mathias tried his best to fake confidence as well. No one cared if you dance well. Inspiring words from a woman who left him immediately after. Mathias looked around suddenly with a small panic. He was trying to follow her advice. Look around and see what the others were doing. The women had moved to an inner circle and Mathias quickly realized the men were supposed to form an outer one so he moved into place opposite Gennadiya. He assumed that was supposed to be where he stood if he wanted to dance with her but he really didn't know.

Then that familiar voice cried out and Mathias turned just in time for half a sausage to stumble across the floor a little bit away from him. He tracked it back to the one who'd tossed it. The nefarious owner of that familiar voice. Kasoria. The sucker. The man who's work went unpaid for. The man waving at them. Gennadiya laughed and when Mathias heard that behind him, he couldn't help but laugh as well. Then he turned back to the healer as she motioned for him to move to his right. He misunderstood and moved to his left, bumping into the man beside him before quickly moving two steps to the right in an attempt to make up for going the wrong direction. Mathias looked back at Kasoria just once more before the dance really began to make sure another piece of food wasn't about to fly at him. The Raggedy Man was eating again and so Mathias put his focus back on the only thing that scared him more than fighting Kasoria... dancing.

Mathias laughed far more throughout the song than he'd laughed in the last three seasons. Genuine laughs. He was not good at this dance. He kept fumbling, missing steps and occasionally grabbing Gennadiya's wrists instead of her hands. He didn't step on her feet but that was only through a very conscious effort to avoid them. It didn't matter though. Just like she had said it wouldn't. With every misstep, Mathias laughed just a little. He was nervous but he was having a good time. He was glad he'd taken the chance and he was relieved when the song came to an end. He wasn't relieved because it meant that he could stop dancing (alright maybe a little.) He was relieved because as he held the healer's hands and looked into her eyes, he realized Ashan wouldn't be so bad after all.

Re: Return of Light and Rebirth of Storm's Edge

"Not tempted to give it a try, old boy?"

"Dun' see anyone waitin' t'take me fer a spin, do yeh?"

Ser Fredrik chortled and gave a shrug of concession. "Point well made."

Kasoria didn't much feel like watching any longer. There was nothing new for him to see, after all. Maybe the boy would dig deeper, or the girl would throw off her expectations, and they'd kiss. Ah, that would be romantic. But hardly worth watching. Kasoria was old enough not to be impressed unless the lad found his fangs and buried it between her legs right in front of them. And that thought alone was enough to make his breakfast try to beat its way out of his stomach the way it got there.

"A'right," he said finally, heaving himself upright and emptying the dregs of his mug in the same gesture. "Fun enuf fer me."

"Fun? That's what you were having?"

Kasoria snorted and favored the Knight with a rare smile. Rarer still that he left a place with a friend in his wake, but the incorrigible old Knight was impossible not to like. Even if he was one of those prattling morons from Rharne, obsessed with justice and honor and blah-blah-blah. Kasoria had always appreciated more corporeal rewards. Ser Fredrik hardly seemed of their ilk, boasting a bushy 'tache like a stuffed squirrel and enough ribald stories for an Etzori shebeen. But Kasoria had seen the iron under the tall tales; the courage beneath the booming laugh and sly manner.

Mayhap that's who you could have been.

Aye. But I'm not.

"Something on your mind?"

"Nah," the Etzori said after a moment, keeping his face inscrutable. No point mourning a past you never had, after all. "Probably just need a good shite."

"'nother plateful, sir?" Fuck me, suddenly he was popular. Right now, when he was trying to leave. Naturally. "God s'more coffe an' grub comin'."

"m'all set 'ere, Frida," Kasoria said with upturned hands, fending the homely woman off with good cheer instead of a blade. "Fit 'tburst."

"Ate yer fill?"

"Too bloody right."

A cry went out again for the new light, the new cycle, hurrah! Kasoria didn't join the chorus, but he still smiled at the sentiment... while looking at Mathias. Oh, he had plans for Ashan, that was for sure. The little archer owed him, and he'd been thinking on how he'd collect. Now he knew, and when he chose to leave Storm's Edge, it wouldn't be with nothing. Until then, he turned from the light-bathed gaiety and let the thinning shadows swallow him again. Heading back into the keep and a bed that was still his for a break or two more. New cycle, new day, same chores to be done and lessons to be led. No-one noticed him go. Which was how he liked it.

Skill Review: Mostly appropriate to level. You might have overplayed “Singing” a tiny bit. Genna has Novice Singing, but she doesn’t seem to be struggling. But then again, it seems to be a simple song.

Comments: I enjoyed the differences in your writing styles and between your PCs (Genna finding the dark difficult while Mathias liked it, for example as well as Kasoria’s thoughts on the “Morties”).

Genna’s introductory post (and the description of her singing) was quite atmospheric in my opinion, and I liked in how much detail Genna’s appearance was described. Reading about what a PC looks like and what they are wearing can really add to a thread in my opinion.

I found it interesting that Mathias avoided “Karim”. Isn’t he going to become his initiate?

Kasoria’s reaction to Genna’a announcement amused me. He was about to simply leave – and then the food arrived. That scene was really well-written (and funny!) in my opinion.

The dance was entertaining as well. I’m a bit disappointed that Kasoria didn’t dance though. That was something that I really wanted to see!

Anyway, enjoy your rewards!
