The distraction seemed to be working while Balthazar moved towards Victor spinning his staff, but the time came for Balthazar to strike and he did. Victor was fast, in a flash his sword parried Balthazar's swipe and predicatively it dropped just in time to parry Balthazar's followup but Victor was retreating as he performed his skilled parries. Balthazar moved forward too cautiously to really capitalize on Victor retreating but he wasn't quite willing to take chances that might get him whacked again. Balthazar adjusted his grip, his hands dropping closer to the bottom of the staff and giving him a little more reach as a result. Victor was good with his sword but it did have less reach. Balthazar couldn't quite crunch the numbers in his head but a glance at Victor's sword, his own staff, and the space between them gave the Rupture mage ample information the layman would have been guessing at.

Then it was Victor's turn- the other mage striking while Balthazar was changing his grip. He advanced on Balthazar and Balthazar retreated across the sand, trying to maintain the distance through prodding parries... but Victor kept coming. It slowly became more apparent to Balthazar that Victor was striking at his staff and not at him when Victor's blade began striking further and further toward Balthazar's hands. The first parry cost Balthazar an inch of space, the second cost him half a foot, and by the third Victor had moved close enough that he might even strike Balthazar with his sword... but he had also moved into a range where Balthazar's legs could reach him. When Victor's sword came in again, Balthazar feigned back for a moment to try and make Victor reach, before quickly swinging his staff in an effort to knock Victor's guard down to the right, exposing his left side to an attempted kick to the back of the knee.

Re: Proving Your Worth

Things were going better than the Transmuter had thought that they would, everything considered. Fighting Balthazar was a challenge, but it also seemed as if a man with a sword could gain the upper hand over someone that fought with a staff and, possibly, even win. He didn’t slow down despite the fact that things were going exceptionally so far though, he didn’t dwell on that early success too much, although a smile did flicker across his face for the briefest of moments, but tried to remain focused as he struck the Balthazar’s weapon several times in quick succession.

He had moved into a range where he would actually be able to actually hit his opponent rather than just his weapon. A bit of sweat had begun to bead on his forehead – Balthazar was not the first man that he fought that trial– and his heart was beating a hint faster as he raised his sword again. A moment later, his weapon was being knocked to the side, and he gritted his teeth as Balthazar kicked him. The kick was by no means debilitating, but it did hurt, and it made him pause, long enough for Balthazar to be able execute another attack.

A jab followed the kick. Victor raised his sword in order to try and push Balthazar’s staff away from him or at least lessen the impact somehow and muttered something that would without a doubt have shocked his poor etiquette teachers in Lysoria that had tried so hard to turn him into a prim and proper little noble lord, all those arcs before. “Fek!”

The noble that had kept on attacking Balthazar was clearly trying to defend himself now. He was trying to avoid getting kicked or hit again. He was trying to parry, but only for a few moments before he made another attempt and attacked even more relentlessly than before, alternately trying to strike Balthazar’s staff or trying to push it away from him in order to get close enough to hit him again.

Would Balthazar let him get close to him again though – or was he more on his guard now?

It seemed as if his blows did nothing but encourage more passion from the swordsman. Respectable. Useful. Terrifying. Those were the three things Balthazar thought as he found himself on a backpedal, doing his upmost to try to defend against Victor's strikes but Victor moved his sword with a certain experience that Balthazar just did not have. He'd done well so far off the merits of the staff alone. It had two ends for him to defend with. But when he shifted his hold on his staff to extend his reach he forsake one of the ends. In this combat it would take more than reach to prevail. Balthazar did his best to keep his staff in front of him while Victor's sword twiddled closer and closer to him. He's coming back into striking range. The thought flickered through Balthazar's mind as he thought it might behoove him to abandon the staff and rely on his unarmed skills- but he didn't.

And Victor reached him.

What had begun with Balthazar backing away and thrusting his spear at Victor to try and keep the distance had quickly shifted into Balthazar swinging the staff in small, barely controlled swings, to try and get it back in place before Victor's sword cam around again. But eventually Victor had closed too much distance and Balthazar went to twirl the staff in hopes it would get Victor to retreat. What Balthazar didn't think of was that his grip on the staff lessened when he twirled it and as he brought it down to strike at Victor and Victor parried it, Victor also knocked the staff out of Balthazar's hands. Balthazar stumbled back slightly and put his hands up in surrender rather than use them to lash out. He'd lost that exchange and no amount of wailing on Victor with his fists would change that in the eyes of the people around them.

Re: Proving Your Worth

Before long, Victor had moved into striking range again, and Balthazar was struggling to use his staff properly as a consequence. His weapon’s greater length had turned into a disadvantage once more. When Balthazar began to spin his staff again, the Transmuter narrowed his eyes slightly before he shifted the sword in his hands and waited for the other man to make his move.

When Balthazar brought his staff down in order to strike at him, he raised his sword - and a moment later, Balthazar’s weapon landed in the mud of the pit which was a rather unexpected turn of events. He had not attacked with the intention of disarming his opponent, but apparently, Balthazar’s grip on his staff had been so loose that his attack had had that kind of effect anyway.

At least he considered that to be the most likely explanation.

Either way, he definitely approved of what had happened!

When Balthazar stumbled back and raised his hands in surrender, Victor lowered his sword and met his gaze for a moment before he inclined his head and nodded, a sign that he accepted that gesture. Smiling slightly, he then made a step towards the Defier and proceeded to extend his hand for the other man to shake, if he was willing to do so.

“That was an interesting fight”, he remarked. He wasn’t trying to make the white-haired mage feel better about his defeat; he really meant what he said. It had been quite the learning experience. “Maybe we could repeat this sometime?” he asked and raised an eyebrow questioningly before he turned to the audience that had begun to applaud.

He bowed to them before he turned to face Balthazar once more. “I offered to give you a demonstration of my magic”, he reminded him. “I’m still willing to do that, now or later, whenever you want - if you are interested, that is.”

It was the applauding audience more than Victor's words that stung Balthazar. Some may have saw it as applause for the show they'd put on together, but Balthazar saw it only as applause for Victor. Being unarmed was embarrassing for someone like Balthazar but he wasn't going to show his embarrassment- not at the proving grounds. Balthazar reached out towards his staff and called upon the wind to bring the instrument back to him. The wind kicked up, flinging Balthazar's hair around his head as the staff floated off the ground and then the wind blew it back to Balthazar's hand. Balthazar twirled it once and shook Victor's outstretched hand. Then Balthazar walked over to the weapons rack he'd taken the staff from to return it while Victor spoke to him. "Interesting indeed." Balthazar replied in a stoic way as he made sure the staff was secure on the rack again.

Then he turned towards Victor and shook the remaining pain out of his leg while Victor spoke of the demonstration he'd promised. Any other trial, Balthazar would have accepted. Even embarrassed he was fascinated by the mystical and Attunement had given him an understanding of ether that none of the other magics had. He'd heard rumors of transmuters being able to take that ether and do things to things with it but as the sentence just written might imply, nobody really knew what they were doing with their ether. Balthazar was interested in learning, but he was also rather exhausted from the various unarmed fights before he'd engaged with Victor. "Another trial, maybe. I'm a little sore." Balthazar told Victor before beginning some simple stretches to try and ease his way out of the workout. "But I am interested, without a doubt."

Injuries/Conditions: The back of your leg, where he hit you with the flat of his sword will be sore for a few days. Try to keep weight off it or else get healing and it'll be fine within a break or so. (His magic regen should see to that)

Consequences: The enemies Balthazar has made may have been among those in the crowd, trying to suss out a weakness in his combat style. Maybe he'll get challenged sometime soon, he'd best be on his guard! :D

Comments: I like a good sparring match. Lots of good technique on display, as well as some not so good (to be expected from Balthazar who is a novice with a staff and much more of a hand to hand expert.). Still some of Balthazar's combat experience seemed to trickle down into his use of the staff, his well trained agility and such.

I like Victor's approach to combat, it was very tactical and methodical. He's like a surgeon with that longsword, one wouldn't want to get on his bad side! I can only imagine how much more formidable he is while using transmutation.

Balthazar kept his cool in defeat, and was fairly gracious for that. I wonder how the fight would've gone if they were using ALL their preferred skills. Maybe a rematch is in order, this time with magic?!

Good writing and enjoy the rewards.
