Proving Your Worth

34 Ashan 720
Sand flew into the air as another brawler collapsed, having been knocked unconscious by a heel to the back of his head. Balthazar stumbled back from his opponent for a moment- tense and ready for the brawler to rise and continue the fight... but he didn’t rise. Balthazar eased slightly as the brawlers friends came to drag him away and let the cheers of the few spectators wash over him for a trill or two before he walked away to find another person to train with.

The temperatures has begun to rise suddenly in Ashan which had caused a bit of flooding a few trials back but it was still cold and the flooding had been dealt with. The Proving Ground’s sand pits seemed more like mud pits because that very flooding had soaked the sands the trial before and it hadn’t completely dried- but Balthazar didn’t care. He reveled in the heat of the battle. He never felt more comfortable and assured then when he was in battle and here he could do that all the time.

He’d just finished his second unarmed brawl and decided to work with a staff so he borrowed one from the rack at the edge of the sandpit and moved back over to the training area to find another combatant to duel with. Balthazar twirled the staff a little bit to get a feel for it as he looked around. It wasn’t incredibly heavy but Balthazar didn’t know if that was a good or a bad thing.

Re: Proving Your Worth

Victor had spent almost every trial since he had returned to Scalvoris, a place of which he had happy memories which was something that tended to be in short supply in his life, in the Proving Ground. Sparring seemed a healthier way of coping with his lover’s execution, his brother’s bitter betrayal and his recent imprisonment in Niflheim than drinking himself halfway to death or numbing the pain with the herbs that a certain healer in Melrath had given to him; besides, a part of him actually enjoyed reacquainting himself with the blade.

He’d just fought a Biqaj who used a sword, just like him, and was leaning against the barrier that separated the spectators of which there usually tended to be a few, even if there was no actual tournament taking place, arms crossed over his chest, his cheeks slightly flushed and his boots caked with a bit of mud as the ground had not dried after the most recent rain when he noticed a man that was apparently looking for an opponent. The noble furrowed his brow fractionally as he studied him and let his gaze drift over his staff.

Finally, he pushed off the wall and walked over to him. “How about the two of us give it a try?” he asked and raised an eyebrow before he drew his sword, a slender steel shortsword that he had picked from the weapons rack upon entering the Proving Ground. He was dressed in leather that offered some protection – even in a fight that was for sport, people could get hurt.

“I’ve never fought someone with a staff before. Unless you think that such a combination won’t work?”
he asked and looked at the other man from out of eyes that were tinged with peculiar flecks of silver. Most people tended to be surprisingly clueless but an experienced mage such as Balthazar might be able to correctly identify them as a mutation, a consequence of giving oneself to the spark.

Not ten bits passed before someone had approached Balthazar again for another duel- Immortal's this place was amazing. The man who approached wore a sword on his hip and had small silver flakes in his eyes. He made his challenge clear and spoke of his inexperience fighting men with a staff. Balthazar looked to the long stick in his hand and then the steel sword in Victor's. Admittedly Balthazar was no master with a staff so he would have felt more comfortable battling Victor with his hands alone, but that challenge was exactly what he'd been looking for. Balthazar shifted the staff to his left hand and reached his right hand out to shake Victor's- Balthazar's eyes narrowing as he examined Victor.

A mage? Balthazar said nothing of the thought that had sprung into his head. He didn't want to be wrong. So instead he began the process of attuning to Victor's frequency so that he might be able to search it for a note to confirm his suspicions... but he needed to draw out this little conversation to do so. Balthazar had no hope of such disciplined examination in combat... it was hard enough in conversation- his brow always furrowed as if he was thinking intensely despite his words being fairly simple.

"Balthazar Black." He introduced himself and whether or not Victor shook his outstretched hand - hereby receiving a very telling shock and feeling very warm skin to give away the mage before Victor, Balthazar would shift his staff back to his right hand when the formality had passed. Balthazar looked at their weapons again and then shrugged. "I'm not sure. How good would you say you are with the sword?" Balthazar said as he reached the staff out to the side. He was stalling. Still searching Victor's frequency. Only as his question ended did he finally attune and now he had to search for the right notes. "I'm... decent with the staff."

Re: Proving Your Worth

The man that stood in front of him looked somewhat unusual, Victor decided. He was his own age or younger – Victor himself had just turned thirty – and yet his hair and his beard were as white as snow; and what more, his eyes were golden even though he clearly wasn’t a Biqaj – he lacked their pointed ears, among other things – which led him to the conclusion that his appearance was, most likely, the result of magic. Victor himself had changed greatly after he had accepted the spark, after all.

He didn’t ponder Balthazar’s appearance for more than a few moments though; he wanted to fight and not talk about magic mutations, although the aforementioned topic normally interested him greatly – he was a researcher of magic and had worked at the Institute of Metaphysics, before he had returned to his native Lysoria as it had seemed as if a war would start soon.

“Victor, of House Amielle”, he introduced himself as the other man told him his name and extended a hand – only to withdrew it again immediately after coming in contact with Balthazar’s skin, furrowing his brow slightly as the electric shock was rather unexpected, as was the warmth of Balthazar’s skin. Victor’s own skin was always slightly cool to the touch.

“Transmutation or Defiance?” he asked, raising an eyebrow fractionally as those two domains were most likely to have such an effect in his experience, before he replied, “I’m above average when it comes to my skill with the sword.” The noble was occasionally prone to being somewhat arrogant, a consequence of his background as well as his allegiance to a certain Immortal; he was not exaggerating this time though. Victor was more skilled with the blade then the average soldier as well as most conventional mercenaries, although there were of course things that he had yet to learn.

“So, shall we start?” he asked and changed his grip on the sword slightly. He could almost smell and taste the sharpness of the blade in his hand, a result of one of his mutations that affected his senses in the strangest of ways and made him perceive reality slightly differently.

“Would you like to make the first move?”

The gambit worked, Balthazar had kept Victor talking long enough to see the big picture of his Frequency and now he only needed a bit longer to find what he was searching so haphazardly for... it made him glad Attunement was a gentle and nigh undetectable magic. Then again if Balthazar found Victor to be an attuner they would have a very awkward moment of self revelation cause it was hard to hide attuning from other attuners than it was from Empaths and other mages... or so Isabella had said. He didn't really know because he mostly practiced with her and she was an attuner too. When the handshake concluded with a question, Balthazar tilted his head slightly. The man had colder hands then Balthazar had expected but that could easily have been the season... his eyes... not so mundanely explainable.

"Defiance, among others. Not Transmutation though." Balthazar replied much more swiftly that he'd wanted to. Transmutation? What an odd guess for the man with the silver-flaked eyes. It gave Balthazar a name for the note he heard in Victor's frequency and Balthazar ginned confidently. Then he heard something else in the frequency that distracted him for only a few trills as he followed the note. There was a spark in Victor but also something more... something... divine. Mortalborn? No... not that divine. Perhaps blessed? It was besides the point.

"You're a Transmuter?" Balthazar asked, trying to confirm his highly educated guess. He didn't know that transmutation had any use in combat so he was not worried about it... but he didn't know the magic. Balthazar didn't break the attunement but he stopped listening in so closely as it seemed the battle was nearing.

"Of course." Balthazar replied "I'll assume no magic for this?" He twirled his staff a little, looking towards Victor for his response. The spar would go very differently if Balthazar was permitted his spells, but he wouldn't open with it. The point of fighting with the staff was to learn to use the staff... the magic was just to ensure he won even if he couldn't beat Victor with the stick. All the same when Victor answered and asked Balthazar if he wanted to make the opening move, Balthazar nodded.

The Defiance mage shifted his grip on his staff one trill before thrusting it towards Victor- the longer polearm giving Balthazar range Victor's sword didn't. Victor either had to move in beyond the reach- and therefore get to where Balthazar could strike with his hands and legs, or he had to disarm Balthazar which could be arguably easier given the mage's inexperience with a staff. Or- and this was always possible, Victor could surprise him.

Re: Proving Your Worth

“Defiance then“, Victor remarked and inclined his head. He still wanted to fight more than anything else at the moment as it was one of the few things that helped him retain his sanity, but he couldn’t help but ask the other man about the strange thing that he had felt, nevertheless. “Was this a mutation – or do you greet everybody by using a bit of magic?” he wanted to know and raised an eyebrow questioningly. The tone of his voice was fairly casual and light-hearted which would tell Balthazar that he had not minded being shocked. On the contrary, he was curious. Magic in all of its different aspects fascinated him.

“I’m a Transmuter, yes”, he confirmed. “Transmutation can be surprisingly useful in combat, but I think that we should fight without magic here, nevertheless. I doubt that the manager of this establishment would appreciate my corroding and reshaping parts of his establishment”, he mused, smirking slightly. That was what he had used his magic for in the past though. He had reshaped the ground to halt his enemies’ progress and even wound them, for example; doing such in The Proving Ground would likely only lead to him being banned from it though, and he rather liked coming here.

“If you want to, I can give you a brief demonstration later on”, he offered in a tone of voice that was not unfriendly before he made a step back, settled into his stance and readied his sword, watching the other man closely in order to see how he moved and what he would do. Balthazar’s attack, he decided, was fairly straightforward; he had opted for a comparatively simple thrust rather than a more elaborate move; his relative lack of finesse was mitigated by his weapon’s greater range though which would ensure that the fight would still be a challenge.

When Balthazar moved towards him, Victor immediately moved backwards as he had no interest in being struck by the other man’s staff, especially not so early in their fight, and raised his sword at the same time so that he would be able to parry the oncoming attack, just in case. A few moments later, he already moved towards Balthazar again though, trying to strike at the other mage’s staff in order to push it upwards with all the strength that he could muster up which would hopefully lead to an opening that he would be able to exploit.

"It's a mutation." Balthazar replied to Victor's question "It would be a waste to try and shock everybody." Balthazar added before Victor confirmed that he was a Transmutation mage to Balthazar. A somewhat smug grin spread over Balthazar's face as the word's left Victor's mouth. It always felt good to be right about something, especially when his whole search had been made with such caution thrown to the wind. Then Victor moved to suggest that they not use magic and Balthazar simply nodded to him in agreement. Generally when Balthazar used his magic he was firing projectiles of air or fire- the other two elements only being called on as necessary, and so he often avoided the reshaping landscapes aspect of his magic but he understood Victor's concern. There were a very few good fight clubs in Scalvoris and the Proving Grounds was one of them- nobody wanted to get banned.

"That could be educational." Balthazar replied to Victor's offer of a demonstration a little later. It was not a spark he had and so Balthazar tended not to care for demonstrations, but since joining the Element's he'd discovered there was some value to knowing a little bit about a great wealth of things so he wouldn't turn down a free show... but before that could happen there was combat to be had. Balthazar attacked, Victor retreated with a parry, and then Balthazar retreated himself. He was too green with a staff to advance on Victor with any sort of confidence. But then he realized he wouldn't have much choice in Victor did not advance as well. Victor had moved backwards... maybe Balthazar could use that.

But before such dire plans could be made, Victor moved in again. Balthazar thrust his staff- with his right hand at the back and his left hand leading, towards Victor who parried it upwards, pushing one end of the weapon away from him. Balthazar buckled his right elbow in, using the momentum from Victor's parry to try and swing the bottom end of the staff up towards Victor as a counter strike while also blindly, exposing his own legs to attack.

Re: Proving Your Worth

Balthazar retreated as well, Victor noticed, which caused him to raise an eyebrow questioningly. That was a reaction that he had not expected, to be honest. He had thought that the other man would advance on him again immediately, and he couldn’t help but wonder why he didn’t. Was his retreat part of some sort of elaborate strategy – or was the Defier not as confident with his weapon as he had claimed that he was? Either way, that fact made the noble slightly insecure, but only for a moment before he moved forward again.

A light gasp escaped his lips as he pushed Balthazar’s staff away as doing so took a certain amount of effort. He had planned on getting close enough that the other man wouldn’t be able to strike him as easily anymore, close enough that the length of Balthazar's weapon would turn into a disadvantage, and going for his torso or his arms – that was why he had opted for that particular move. So, when Balthazar quickly swung the bottom end of his staff towards him, his eyes widened in surprise before he ducked, barely in time to avoid being hit. A moment later, he attempted to strike towards the white-haired mage’s legs and subsequently move to the side in order to hopefully get out of the way of any counterattack of his.

If Balthazar paid a bit of attention, he would be able to notice two things about his opponent. The Transmuter’s attacks and parries were quite accurate – one of the signs of an experienced swordsman – but acrobatics were definitely not his forte – his dodge had been on the slow side - and he was of comparatively average strength. The latter were two things that he might be able to use to his advantage if he went about it the right way.

There was also another thing that Balthazar might be able to notice, but only if he turned away. Some of the spectators had begun to watch the two of them as a swordsman fighting someone that had a staff was not something that you got to see every trial. Most of the time, both opponents’ weapons had a similar range, and sometimes, there were people that fought without any weapons at all, of course. Some of the spectators had even begun to speculate who of them would win.

Re: Proving Your Worth

Part of Balthazar wished Victor were a less skilled swordsman. Then he would be able to take note of and revel in the onlookers who were gathering to watch their little contest. But Victor was a good swordsman, and Balthazar was too focused on the fight because of it. He did notice that Victor's parrying form seemed superior to his dodging ability but in the grand picture of the battle it seemed inconsequential because a few trills after Balthazar swung the butt end of his staff up towards Victor's face, Victor had acted on Balthazar's exposed legs. Balthazar's Rupture spark warned him of the incoming blade- or maybe it was the Attunement spark this time? No it was certainly the same feeling as when he Rupture spark warned him... any who, Balthazar felt the blade nearing him but could do little to avoid it so instead he drove his staff down to the ground between Victor's blade and his leg... but he was a little late.

The staff smacked the ground, Victor's blade struck the staff, and Victor's superior form gave him an edge Balthazar did not have. Balthazar's staff served as a proper block for only a trill before Victor's blade pushed it aside and smacked in Balthazar's leg. He couldn't tell if it had smacked his leg because that had been Victor's intent or if it had smacked his leg because he deflected the blade somewhat with his staff in the trill before it slammed into his leg but the end result was the same. A loud smack rang through the proving grounds, Balthazar grunted in pain, and then Balthazar swiped at Devin with his staff only to find Devin had retreated slightly out of the way.

Balthazar groaned and limped for a moment as he re-centered on Victor with his staff at the ready. He'd been quick enough to get away cause Balthazar's leg had distracted him but Balthazar didn't intend to let that happen again. His eyes narrowed at Victor as he thought of how to attack the man. He needed to introduce some confusion... so long as Victor knew where the next strike was going to come from he didn't have to worry all that much about anything other than parrying and countering. Balthazar twirled the staff slightly, getting it in motion as he moved towards Victor and then keeping it spinning slowly so that he didn't drop it until Victor was close enough for his to lash out with a swipe, which is what he did.

Re: Proving Your Worth

Victor’s smacking Balthazar’s leg with his sword had of course been intentional. Had the other man been a bandit or a similarly unpleasant person who had attacked him with the intention of taking his money, his life or both, he would have taken advantage of the situation and attempted to cut him in order to hopefully draw blood; this fight was for entertainment and for sport though. He had no interest in seriously wounding his opponent. He did use a bit of force though, just enough that Balthazar would be able to feel it, just enough in order to hopefully cause the other man a bit of discomfort before he retreated.

“Sorry”, the Transmuter apologized as he noticed that the white-haired mage was limping now and smirked slightly as a part of him had quite enjoyed that first little moment of success, before he readied his sword once more as it seemed as if his opponent was recovering quite a bit faster than he had expected. He needed to act quickly now, or the advantage that he had over his opponent at the moment would be gone again.

Balthazar’s next move was not at all what he had expected though. He did not thrust his staff towards him, and he did not attempt to drive him backwards; instead, he began to spin it slowly which caused the noble to furrow his brow in mild confusion. He wasn’t entirely sure how he was supposed to deal with that. For that reason, he merely watched the other man for a few moments, moving backwards as he did so, as he tried to come up with the best course of action. How did you defeat someone whose staff just didn’t stop moving?

He needed to do something. He could almost feel the eyes of the spectators on him, expecting him to make his next move, and Balthazar wouldn’t just stand there and spin his staff forever either. For that reason, he advanced again just as Balthazar lashed out with a swipe. The Transmuter quickly raised his sword in order to parry the attack and attempted to strike the other man’s staff, first from above and then from below, in order to push it away from him, moving backwards once more in order to avoid being hit.

Pursuing that kind of strategy for a longer amount of time would only lead to him eventually having nowhere to go and literally standing with his back against a wall; and thus Victor abruptly advanced again after a few moments and attempted to strike Balthazar’s staff once more, a little bit closer to where the Defier was holding it – and then again and again, in relatively quick succession, trying to get closer to him again somehow.
