FBI Open Up!

65th of Ashan 720

The following letter had been sent from the hand of the Foreign Affairs Councillor, Kalortah Satravial, to the well-known adventurer and scholar Doran Thetys among a few others on the 56th of Ashan 720. It’d arrive not too long afterward, given enough time for them to at the meeting place on the 65th:

56th of Ashan 720

To Whom it may concern:

It’s come to our attention through certain acquaintances that there have been flying boats spotted in the skies above Sweetwine Woods. At first, we in the council dismissed these reportings as nothing but the ramblings of drunken sailors, but the sightings have persisted through the days following. We’d be foolish to dismiss these sightings as the harmless hallucinations of fools and drunkards.

As such, I’ve ordered the assembly of a small group and camp on the outskirts of the Sweetvine woods. From this camp, we’ll set out to investigate these flying boats. We will be henceforth known on a temporary basis as FBI, or Flying Boat Investigators.

Inside this missive, you will find directions to the base camp. I hope to see you all soon, and safe travels.

Sincerely,
Kalortah Satravial
Foreign Affairs Councilor.

So Kalortah waited, and watched for Doran Thetys and anyone else who wished to accompany him. His bodyguard, Agrippa Gratium, stood nearby, sharpening her sword.

Kalortah wasn’t too weighed down, expecting that his ability to fly would come into play here. Just some sturdy clothing, his washday outfit. Bleached leathers lined with white fur. On his belt, a saber forged from blood metal and steel, and a spiked buckler of blood metal and cobalt.

”So you’re expecting someone important?” Agrippa asked, as she quirked a horned brow. The Wyvarnth bodyguard drew the whetstone gently across the edge of her sword as she let the question hang on the air.

”Yes, a very important scholar and adventurer will be accompanying me… We’ll be keeping our group small, in order not to alarm whoever these boats belong to.”

Agrippa shrugged, and went about her task.

Meanwhile, Kalortah’s eyes trained on the distance, watching and waiting for the volunteers to arrive, if they would.

Re: FBI Open Up!

65 Ashan 720
Balthazar had been told of the boats flying in the sky a few trials ago when they first appeared and he'd thought nothing of it. In Scalvoris it was hardly a surprise at this point to find some odd magical phenomenon occurring so Balthazar figured it would come a go without any issue. Balthazar was wrong. As the trials passed, he heard more and more of the other Element's gossiping. They thought it could be a scouting party for an invasion force or that it might be some sort of mass hallucination produced from the trees of the Sweetwine Woods. Balthazar thought both possibilities ridiculous because he was certain that if it was either of those things, the Militant- or at least some of the Flame troopers, would have been looking into it. However it was when Balthazar received a letter from Isabella asking about the floating boats in the sky that he finally decided he would go take a look for himself.

Isabella had always had a way of prompting Balthazar to action that no one else did. He didn't feel right leaving her letter unanswered given what she'd done for him. So Balthazar put out his spiders to see what he could find. He liked to think of the few associates who helped feed him information as spiders mostly because it made a pun in his mind that Balthazar grinned at every time he said it. For the most part nobody he turned to could provide any solid answers or information on the floating boats other than the same wild speculation that had been present in the Element Hall. However they were able to tell him of a few individuals who had received letters asking them to meet at a certain location to investigate. From there it was just a few more house-calls to find out where the letter instructed the group to meet.

Balthazar arrived to the basecamp using the spear he carried with him like a walking stick as he approached the duo who were already there, Kal and his bodyguard. Balthazar's eye lit up at the sight of a familiar face and he gave a wide armed wave as he approached. He was wearing fairly simple clothing, a black shirt, pants, and boots. But he also had vambraces on his forearms and greaves on his legs though the metals that comprised both the spear and the armor didn't seem worthy of note. Balthazar had figured out some time ago that it was a smart idea to wear some level of armor on his arms and legs because he used them to defend from blades so often that armor had practically become a necessity... and when the Element's had forced him to adopt a weapon the spear had made Balthazar feel like armor was a lost cause. Spears kept people at a distance... Balthazar was better at fighting close up... but he was adapting.

"It's good to see a familiar face!" Balthazar said in a level tone when he was near enough to the two that he wouldn't have to shout. "I'd heard certain people were looking into the boats in the sky, but I didn't know it would be you."

Re: FBI Open Up!

Image
When he opened the envelope that had ended up on his desk that Ashan morning and read the letter contained within, the Mortalborn’s attention was instantly piqued. The writer, one Kalortah Satravial, spoke of flying boats which was something that he decided that he needed to see with his own eyes. He couldn’t help but wonder what kind of powers were at play here. The most skilled of alchemists could make a building float in the middle of a lake. Could the combination of physics and alchemy possibly make boats fly?

If this was the case, then he wanted to have a talk with their creator. He was, quite likely, one of the most skilled alchemists in this part of the world, if not the most skilled one, but this was something that he hadn’t been able to accomplish so far. And if there was actual magic rather than alchemy involved – a powerful magical artifact had its appeal as well.

With that thought in mind, he told his employees as well as his colleagues at the university that he would be gone for a trial or two, that he would answer a councilor’s call for aid. Only Elias, the human swordsman that had been working for him since Etzos where he had been worshipped as a hero for something that he regretted deeply these trials, would be accompanying him as an additional blade and an additional pair of hands might come in handy.

~~~
The Mortalborn and his companion arrived at the basecamp at the time mentioned in the letter. Elias decided to join the other servants and guards while the Mortalborn went looking for Councilor Satravial. He didn’t know anything about the man, whether he was old or young, a human or some other race; when he saw the Avriel standing there, he instantly knew that he was the one nevertheless, though, and he thus approached.
While Kalortah was dressed in bleached leathers and white fur, the son of Ziell was dressed in black. He had traded his customary bespoke suit for a sturdier leather outfit that would offer some protection in combat as well as from the elements. While it was obviously of very high quality, it was somewhat understated, without any unnecessary adornments and frippery. On his back was a gleaming longsword made of Grave Gold, his weapon of choice, and his hands were encased in fine leather gloves that covered his mutations effectively.
“Councilor Satravial”, the Mortalborn spoke in a deep and measured tone and inclined his head in a respectful greeting. “Doran Thetys. I received your letter. Do you have any information on the flying boats besides what you mentioned in your letter?” he asked before he turned to look at the other man that had joined them, raising an eyebrow fractionally as he did so as he had not expected to find a familiar face on that island.
“Mister Black”, he remarked, smiling very lightly as he recalled their last meeting and their conversation on mutations and magic. He had merely been a man that was curious about the arcane back then; now he was a mage himself – as well as something more. This was not the right time to talk about the things that they had in common though, and thus he only asked, “I take it that you are going to take part in this mission as well?”
Flying boats. Ari'sora had heard the rumors, of course. Even in Beacon, people were talking about them. Most of the people Ari'sora had talked to had dismissed them as just that; rumors. Nothing that could possibly be real. Ari'sora wasn't so quick to dismiss them as impossible fantasy, though. Her best friend was a talking cat that she met in a magic maze in the world of dreams. Given that...who was to say that flying boats couldn't be real? Or anything else for that matter? No, Ari'sora was not going to just dismiss anything out of hand.
The thought of flying boats was a fascinating one. Ari'sora wanted to see one; she wanted them to be real because anything that could fly was of great interest to her. It was for that reason that she decided to follow the directions in the letter that she had been given despite knowing that the letter must have been given to her by mistake. No one on the Scalvoris Council would ever have any reason to send a letter to her. It would be better...and perhaps safer if she had simply thrown the letter away. Still. Flying boats...that was something that she simply had to see for herself. How would a flying boat even work? Did they have wings like a bird would? Were they alive? Or was magic behind it all? What did the flying boats, or the people who commanded them want? What kind of people would work on a flying boat for that matter? Ari'sora had more questions than she could keep track of easily, and the chance to find answers to some of them was simply too strong a lure for her to pass up.
So it was with those thoughts in mind that she gathered up the letter she had been given, and her short bow, and made her way to the place that the letter mentioned. There were three people waiting there already, one of them an Avriel. Avriel were dangerous. Her mother had told her that countless times, hating her because of what her father had done to her. She had more personal reasons to be wary of Avriel as well. Vyndar was an Avirel, and he was one of the men who had kept her captive for most of Cylus 719. But then again, it was likely that not all Avriel were bad...and it only made sense if one was as interested in the flying boats as she was. Besides...how else were they going to get up to a flying boat if they didn't fly?
"Um...I realize that this letter was probably meant for someone else...but it was delivered to me, and I've been fascinated about the possibility of flying boats ever since I heard the rumors about them. If there is anything I can do to help, I would love to be of service." she offered shyly.
Re: FBI Open Up!
Kalortah continued about his preparations, making sure his saber was properly set in its sheath, his valance were properly harnessed, and his armor clean. It wasn't long before one of those who'd seen the pamphlets spread across Scalvoristown arrived. It was a familiar face, one that Kalortah had seen in Almund, as he arrived last season. He didn't smile, as the meeting had ended as abruptly as it began, with Balthazar and the Dastardly Devin stealing his chance with the avriel beauty in the Siren's.
Nevertheless, his help would be welcome. Kalortah was no appraiser of people, but from the spear, the vambraces, and his muscles it looked like he was a warrior of some capability. So he was welcome. "You are welcome here, then... I don't believe we've introduced ourselves? I'm Kalortah Satravial, Councilor of Foreign Relations."
He bowed slightly before Balthazar, crossing his arm over his abdomen as he made the gesture. Then he straightened up and nodded to the Element soldier. He thought to warn him that they didn't anticipate violence, but it was good to be prepared to defend themselves. However, Kalortah would wait until their numbers filled out more.
Not long after Balthazar arrived, Doran Thetys was next. The scholar and famous warrior was a boon to this expedition. Not that Balthazar was any slouch, based on his reputation for investigating happenings throughout the island, but the man who'd a reputation for crossing blades with the Immortals themselves? That was credence you couldn't earn by ordinary means, and Kalortah was glad to have people of such a caliber joining him.
"Thank you very much, Professor Thetys, for coming to this expedition... We've so little information on these flying ships, just rumors of them appearing on particularly starry nights, and especially during these showers of shooting stars."
Then Kalortah sensed another on the wind, arriving as their wings displaced air. So another avriel was joining them! How wonderful, until... He turned around to see the woman he'd met in a dream. And not just any woman, a halfriel Accursed abomination... Yet she'd defended him in that dream. Could that be a sign? That she was meant to be here to spare him from death or worse?
Kalortah's mind swirled with chaotic possibilities, at which point he sharply inhaled through his nose, and shuttered his nerves. He left Balthazar and Doran to reacquaint themselves, while he approached the... very pregnant halfriel. The feathers at the back of his head shivered in revulsion, yet he maintained his veneer of civility. He spoke through gritted teeth, "Greetings, Miss. So, you received one of the letters? I suppose another flier would be useful to have, given the nature of our investigation. Come... join us..."
Having invited her, against all his strongest instincts and revulsion that he could scarcely hide, the avriel went over toward the rest of the group, and clapped his hands, "Right! A little briefing might be in order, and if you have any questions at all, please do not hesitate to ask. Just bear in mind this is an investigation, and I only know what I've already told you. These mysterious ships arrive in the night, chasing stars and falling meteors. They've been scaring the locals. However, this is not a military operation. It's good if you've come prepared to defend yourselves, but this is primarily a diplomatic mission to ascertain the purpose, nature, and intention of these strange flying machines."
Behind Kalortah, over the clearing they were gathered in, the sky began to glitter with stars, and some of them might even begin to notice a redness among those stars. Was another meteor shower starting? However, the avriel didn't seem to notice and paid it no mind as he awaited the questions from those gathered.
Re: FBI Open Up!
65 Ashan 720
There was an absence in Balthazar's gaze when Kalortah spoke that was the result of an overactive thought process. Balthazar had never introduced himself to the bard? At least he couldn't remember doing so. The mage's mind went alight with curiosity. Have I met this man before? He's familiar but... different. Balthazar did not draw any immediate link to the third companion who had crawled the bars of Scalvoris with Devin and himself so he moved on. Kalortah was a Conselor as well? How many people did Balthazar know that were part of that thing? Not enough for a coup. "I'm Balthazar Black, I work with the Elements." He didn't specify which branch because he was still in a relatively early stage and occasionally did jobs for branches other than the Flame Troopers.
Balthazar drummed the butt of his spear on the ground slightly as the introductions were made. He shifted it in his grip to adjust the vambrace on his left arm, which wasn't sitting comfortably. Then again when you went bargain shopping for armor it was already considered good luck that he'd found some pieces that fit at all. At least his spear was decent. Before much could be said, other's who had received the letter arrived to the gathering and Balthazar defaulted into his usually observant methods while the rest gathered around. Ever since he'd been initiated into Attunement, Balthazar had played a little game where he went quite in groups and instead began attuning to everybody to learn the most he could. Unfortunately it had worked and Balthazar became fairly decent with the magic so he lost much of the initial excitement of wildly attuning to things. Now he chose what he wanted to attune to more carefully and when he was attuned, he hunted for the notes he did not recognize.
Balthazar was going to begin attuning to this collective when the first new face turned out to be a familiar one and Balthazar's hidden objective was forgotten completely. "Mister Thetys. I am joining this journey. Good to see you again." Balthazar responded as formally and simply as he could to avoid derailing what he assumed would be some level of explanation to answer Doran's question. There wasn't much to be had. Ships showed up on starry nights and they had to find one. At least the job was straightforward. Balthazar shifted his spear to his left hand, worried that his right was becoming too sweaty because he'd been holding the spear for too long. Balthazar fidgeting an unusual amount- the uncomfortable result of deciding to wear armor after arcs of learning to live without it.
Before long the seemingly final addition to their party arrived just in time to reassure Balthazar he'd made the right choice in not inviting Isabella. Doran had arrived with company and it seemed Kalortah had as well. It was nice to see someone who came alone- then Balthazar realized that the woman had not come alone. She'd come with child... damn it. Fortunately Kalortah gave Balthazar something else to concern himself with in the form of a little briefing. The Elements sent a soldier on a diplomatic mission? The fools. Then again Balthazar seemed to do diplomacy quite well despite his lack of formal training... actually no... what he did as a private investigator was rarely diplomatic. Whatever, he would make it work. Balthazar's eyes slowly shifted up towards the blade of his spear and then back to the group as an internal conflict raged. Did he leave the spear here? He could attune to it and come back for it later if he needed. Besides bringing a weapon that really just hindered his combat style to a mission where they weren't meant to use the weapons anyways would probably send those aboard the boats the wrong message.
He didn't need a long stick with a bit of metal at the end to protect himself. He was the weapon... and he told himself that far too often. Most of the time it was said in defiance when he failed to perform with the spear. Balthazar's eyes shifted up towards the stars and he watched for movement beyond what he suspected to be the beginning of another meteor shower. And what are we going to do with that information? Balthazar wondered as he pondered over Kalortah's directive for the mission again. He didn't have any questions except the obvious. "Does anyone here need help getting to the boats once we find them?" This question Balthazar posed to everybody. Depending on how far into the sky the boats were, whenever they arrived, Balthazar might be able to simply conjure a portal to make his journey shorter. Then again he had a feeling some measure of flying would be involved despite his hopes.
Re: FBI Open Up!
“It is my pleasure, Councilor Satravial”, the Mortalborn spoke in a polite and calm tone of voice as Kalortah thanked him for coming and inclined his head fractionally. “I have to admit, I’m curious about this phenomenon. That the flying ships only appear at night, is most interesting”, he remarked. He was already beginning to formulate a few theories as to why they appeared on particularly starry nights and what might be going on.
He had recently developed an interest in astronomy which those that knew what he had done once upon a time would probably find unusual; but then again, he wasn’t the hopeless man that had attacked Xiur on the frozen plains of Oscillus anymore. There was something about the stars and the night sky that he found quite calming and relaxing. The world seemed like a different place at night, more peaceful and more beautiful.
The arrival of the third member of their party momentarily distracted him from his thoughts about shooting stars, flying ships and the night sky though. Unlike Kalortah, he wasn’t bothered by Ari’sora’s obviously mixed heritage at all – factors such as race mattered little to him, and he considered once’s parentage to be largely inconsequential – her obviously advanced pregnancy was the cause of some concern though. He raised an eyebrow fractionally before he simply inclined his head in a greeting, smiling at her. He had decided that he wouldn't say anything; he wouldn’t ask her if she really thought that participating in such a mission would be a good idea.
She had likely given the matter some thought before she had come here. He would simply pay a little more attention to her. With that thought in mind, he turned to listen to Kalortah’s briefing, crossing his arms over his chest as he did so. “Perhaps the ships are simply investigating the meteor showers?” he asked – it was the explanation that made the most sense to him, everything considered - before he raised his head towards the sky for a moment, watching the stars that seemed so much brighter now as well as the red light with some fascination. It seemed as if another meteor shower would take place soon.
“Their intent doesn’t have to be hostile”, he agreed as Kalortah talked about this being a diplomatic mission and turned to face the rest of the party again. He was familiar with such matters to some extent, having served as the ambassador of Etzos in Rynmere for several seasons, until shortly before the plague, which the councilor would most likely be aware of. “I’ve been wondering about the meteor showers since I first heard about them, shortly after my arrival on this island – just like a fair number of other scientists, I would assume, although I don’t know anybody who possesses a flying ship or how exactly such a flying ship could be created”, he admitted.
Having said that, he finally addressed his old acquaintance, Balthazar Black, again. “I would appreciate some help in that regard. As you can see”, he remarked, stating the obvious, his voice momentarily tinged with a hint of amusement. “I do not have wings, and alchemy unfortunately doesn’t enable me to fly”, he explained before he looked at Kalortah once more. The Avriel had surely given the question as to how they would reach the flying ships some thought before he had asked them all to accompany him on this mission. He seemed to be a fairly intelligent, reasonable and competent individual, from what he had observed so far.
The Councilor seemed...strained as he greeted her. Ari'sora got the feeling that he didn't like her very much, and that made her wary. She had never met the man before, and she couldn't think of anything that she might have done in the time she'd been her to earn his dislike. But the prospect of exploring a flying boat was way too good to pass up.
So she paid close attention to the briefing. She had never once considered that this might be a military mission; if she had, she wouldn't have even thought about wanting to go. So it was a great relief to her when the Councilor told them that it wasn't a military mission. She had bought her short bow in case it was needed for some reason, but she would be very happy to not need it.
She had a lot of questions, but the Councilor said that he didn't know anything more than what he told them, so she refrained from asking them. Instead, she watched the others, listening to what they had to say. One man worked for the Elements. Another was a professor. Ari'sora hadn't seen him at the University before, and she wondered what he taught.
The professor mentioned wondering how a flying ship might have been made, and who might own it, and Ari'sora gave the matter some thought. She couldn't even begin to guess who might own such a thing, but she did have an idea on how it was made.
"It would have to be made by magic, wouldn't it?" she wondered out loud.
She felt a sharp cramp in her abdomen that made her wince slightly. Ari'sora had been feeling cramps sporadically for several trials now. Her healer had explained that it was a symptom of late pregnancy and that it meant that her body was getting ready to give birth. It didn't mean that labor was likely to start immediately though...or even within the next seventrial. As a result, she didn't pay it much mind. She just hoped that it didn't happen while she was flying, though. The sudden pain might be enough of a distraction to cause a problem if she was flying when it happened.
