The Swordswoman and the Thief, Part 5

Part 1
Part 2
Part 3
Part 4

Ashan 30, Arc 720

“Are you sure that you don’t want my help?”
Adeline asked and looked at Devin as he put the totem that he had just dedicated and that took the form of a ring on one of his fingers.

“No, I don’t think so”, the Mortalborn replied. He had been grateful for the blonde mage’s and swordswoman’s help when they had made the ring even though he was normally not a very grateful individual, but he really didn’t want her to be there when he transformed for the first time.

His attending several lectures on Magical Theory had given him a pretty good idea of what the process would be like. The professor had said that it was unpleasant, and that it was painful, and he didn’t want her to see him when he was in pain.

He didn’t want anybody to see him when he was in pain.

He was quite looking forward to showing the final result off though!

With that thought in mind, the thief and recently initiated Becomer went upstairs, into his bedroom, locked the door so that nobody would be able to come inside and interrupt him and took a deep breath.

He had been incredibly eager before – becoming a Biqaj (his new totem was one – and a comparatively nice looking one at that) would help him finally figure out how exactly their eyes worked. On top of it, his new magic would make his cons so much easier, and it would eventually enable him to grow wings, just like his rival, that stupid Avriel Kalortah, but now that the time had come, Devin was strangely hesitant, and maybe just a little bit …

No, he was definitely not afraid!

He was never afraid!

Re: The Swordswoman and the Thief, Part 5

So, without further ado, he walked over to the bed, took his clothes off just in case they would get ruined during the transformation – the man that he had made the totem of was approximately the same height as him, but you could never know for sure – and lay down, taking a deep breath as he did so as he tried to calm down, relax and clear his mind.

A moment later, he placed the hand with his ring on his chest, where his heart was and closed his eyes, and then he began to channel his ether into his totem, slowly and carefully.

Normally, Devin wasn’t slow or careful; this wasn’t just a con or a prank though. If he messed things up, he wouldn’t simply be running from an irate victim or the guards, his body and soul would mutate, and if worse came to worst, he could even die. He didn’t want to die though!

If he died, he would never figure out how Biqaj eyes worked – or get his wings!

His body tensed slightly as the process began, and he furrowed his brow in confusion as it was … a lot less unpleasant than he had expected. A moment later, when his bones began to change, he let out a scream though.

Another couple of trills later, blinding, searing hot pain shot through his head and through the center of his brain. For a moment, he couldn’t see anything, and he couldn’t feel anything but pure and utter agony that was so intense that he screamed again, as loudly as he could, on top of his lungs. He stopped worrying about Adeline hearing him, and about what she would think of him. His whole body felt as if it were on fire!

His heart began to beat faster and faster, as if it was going to jump right out of his chest, and sweat began to bead on his forehead, and the pain still didn’t stop. Tears began to stream down his face. “Immortals”, he exclaimed in a voice that was hoarse from screaming so much and that didn’t really sound like his own anymore. After a while, the screams turned to moans as he wasn’t capable of uttering actual words anymore. It hurt too much!

Just when he thought that he was about to pass out, after what seemed like an eternity, but had really only been bits, the pain finally stopped, and there was an unexpected sense of calm. He took a moment to collect himself before he tentatively cracked an eyelid open and then another one in order to look down at … was he still himself if he wore a different body? He pondered that question for a few trills before he decided that it was too philosophical for his taste.

He hated philosophy!

So, he sat up on the edge of his bed instead and inspected his body to make sure that it was in one piece and that he wasn’t missing any parts. For a moment, he felt a little strange. He was a seasoned conman and had already worn countless disguises. This here was different from a wig and a bit of makeup though. This wasn’t just a disguise. This was actually his body now, and if he lost his self-totem, he would probably stay like that!

A moment later, he decided, while the situation at hand was definitely a little bit strange, it was also totally awesome though – and that the man who he had made the totem of had a nicer body than he had thought when he had met him. He hadn’t hidden any scars or other unpleasant surprises under his clothes. And what more, the vial of Perfection In A Bottle that he had drunk a few trials earlier, before his initiation, still seemed to be working. Even in this totem, he still had a perfect physical build! How great was that?!

The only thing that he was slightly disappointed about was the fact that his nails were normal, boring, pink nails now rather than the black claws that the crazy grafter Rakvald had made for him.

They were one of his favourite body parts!

No matter, after he had made sure that everything was there, he stood and made his way over to the mirror, a little unsteady on his feet, and looked at his new reflection, the pale face with the eyes that were silver for some reason now and the mop of somewhat unruly brown hair above it. He had never seen another man’s body from that perspective! Was it really another man’s body though? He thought about Adeline’s words again and furrowed his brow for a moment before he opened his mouth and greeted his new self,

“Well, hello, there!”

He froze for a moment when he heard himself speak with a completely different voice, and then he laughed out loud because it was quite exciting.

He looked down at himself again – he couldn’t help but be a little curious about his new totem – and was rather surprised by the fact that the strange tattoos that he had acquired after his initiation were still present.

They were rather nice tattoos though, so he didn’t mind too much.

With that thought in mind, he informed his reflection, “Let’s find some clothes for you! I wonder which color and style will suit you! I think we’ll get something in a lighter color for you …” he mused in a voice that was perhaps a hint softer than his normal voice and grinned because this was going to be so much fun!

Re: The Swordswoman and the Thief, Part 5

“Well, look at you, Devin!” Adeline who was sitting on his couch exclaimed and clapped her hands in delight as he walked down the stairs, a little slowly as he wasn’t used to his totem yet and didn’t want to fall down, stumble or do something equally embarrassing.

“You've made it! This totem looks good on you!” she told him. The blonde woman was often a bit sarcastic; this time her compliment was genuine though, and she was smiling at him.

Even though she’d never admit it, she had been a little worried about him.

“Do you think so?” he asked, grinned and did a little twirl so that she could admire him from all angles before he walked over to her and plopped down on the couch next to her because getting this body to move properly was quite a bit more challenging then he had thought.

“What shall I do first?” he wondered as he thought about all the things that he could use his new totem for. “And who do you think our friend was?” he wanted to know, realizing that he didn’t even know the name of the Biqaj that he had made the totem of. “No matter, I’ll just make up a name and a background story for him!” he decided.

“Maybe I’ll be a noble or a pirate!” he mused before he abruptly turned to face his mentor again and asked, “Which color are my eyes now, by the way, Adeline? Are they still silver?”

“No”,
the mage replied, looking at him a little strangely. “They are yellow, like the sun.”

“Huh”,
Devin made as he wondered what had caused that change. He had no idea, but he would find out eventually – and he would also find a way to get those eyes to change color when he wanted to! He’d be the first Biqaj that could change his eye color at will!

Overview

I found the thread very interesting. It's the first time I've seen the painful becoming a totem written out in such detail. I also liked how Devin reacted after the change. He avoided the question about dentity and apperance as he is Devin, but it's interesting that you brought it up. The same goes for the streak of disappointment at having lost the grafted nails.

Devins goals strikes me as unique in a bizarre way (learning to control biquaj eye color, gaining wings to outshine Kalortah, improving cons...)
I'm actually following his development with bated breath ^^

Good thread!

Devin
