What the Hail? (Graded)

11 Cylus 720 | Ulric | The Crescent Arena
Though the war had seemingly come to a conclusion, there was a lingering itch in both Arthur and Ulric. When Arthur dreamed, his dreams seemed to turn sour. They couldn't remember how it had gone down in the end but they were left with some contentment. Still that itch persisted in the two of them. Arthur found himself arguing in bars more often and Ulric found himself choking many more people with tendrils... so they decided they needed to go somewhere where that sort of behavior would be tolerated... hell it might even be celebrated. They'd been to the Crescent Arena once before and so it wasn't too difficult to find again, but when they arrived, they did so as separate individuals. Ulric manifested completely and wore his own sword at his side while Arthur was... well Arthur. Ulric had begun to have complicated feelings about possessing Arthur given his recent choices. He knew the man had complicated feelings about Sintra but Ulric had been marked after the war and when he possessed Arthur... he felt the mark.

The two of them had been separated upon their arrival and they were sent to different rooms to prepare for the fight to come. They'd signed up to participate in a tournament of sorts though neither of them had any idea where they were in terms of proximity to each other on that list. All they knew was that if each of them kept winning they would eventually have to fight each other... but that was a problem for the future. To get to that future they first had to contend with all the others who'd signed up. Eventually Ulric's name was called and the specter stood from the bench he was sitting on. Ulric didn't have any armor on, merely a set of black clothing to contrast his incredibly pale skin and the black voids where his eyes once sat. He wore an additional sword which he'd borrowed from the arena because he was so used to having Arthur's sword as a back up to his own.

Many warriors looked twice when they saw Ulric lead passed them by one of the tournament organizers but they didn't look for long. A ghost in Etzos was hardly a rare sight anymore. Ulric was brought into a small room with a gate on the far end that would let out into the arena. He could hear the crowd roaring beyond the gate- calling for blood and battle. He would be the gladiator that gave it to them.

Ulric went over the point system in his mind. A strike on the arms a legs gave you one point. A strike on the chest gave you two points. You needed three points to win your duel and move on to the next in the tournament. It wasn't quite as easy as simply fighting to the death but it would be easier and ensure no more unwanted ghosts emerged in Etzos.

Then the moment came. The gate slid open and Ulric walked through into the Crescent Arena. An uproar passed through the crowd as the two warriors emerged from their pits. Ulric unsheathed his longsword and swung it in the air in front of himself a few times as he prepared. The man across from him had a smaller frame and held two daggers. Ulric grimaced. That probably meant he'd be quick. He hated the quick ones. They were always so much harder to hit. Ulric and the smaller warrior exchanged nods and then assumed ready stances... then the battle began.

Dagger- which was what Ulric thought to call the man because Ulric had a habit of only thinking of individuals as the weapon in their hand- charged at Ulric, full tilt. Ulric braced and leveled his sword in a mid guard towards Dagger as he closed in. The bastard began to spin, his first dagger knocked aside Ulric's sword and his second swung in at the specter's chest but Ulric stepped back and narrowly avoided the blade. The little man was quick after all. Ulric assumed a mid guard again and waited for Dagger to attack. The small man did attack and when he did he used the same spin-move he had the first time so Ulric was prepared. Ulric pulled his sword back, causing the first dagger to miss and then dodged the second dagger and slashed at the back of Dagger's arm. His blade bit flesh and blood splashed onto the sand causing an uproar of cheers throughout the audience.

One point to Ulric.

Dagger retreated with haste, cursing in a language Ulric didn't understand before he readied himself again. Ulric dropped into his mid guard and awaited an attack. This time Dagger quickly flipped his blade in his hand and hurled it at Ulric who foolishly tried to knock it out of the air with his sword and missed. The dagger struck his stone-like chest and bounced off but the points still went to the other man. The little man who was closing in on Ulric. Dagger lashed out with a swipe towards Ulric who conjured a tendril to catch the man's arm mid-swing. Then Ulric turned and slashed him across the chest with his longsword, a thin cut but a cut all the same. The mark of a loser. The crowd began to cheer for the specter's display and Dagger shamefully exited through the gate he'd entered through.

About thirty bits later Ulric was in the arena again. This time he fought a man with a large hammer (who Ulric therefore dubbed Hammer) and out of sheer spite, Ulric had drawn both swords. He didn't mean to fight with them both but he wanted something to intimidate the much larger man. He wanted to intimidate the man because the man wore copper gauntlets. Why? Why wear copper if not to insult Ulric? It was a personal assault and Ulric would not stand for it. He'd become a storm of swords if he needed to. The battle began.

Hammer rushed in and Ulric immediately realized his folly. Two sword were not easy to wield together. Your grip on each blade was inferior and the guard forms that he knew were practically impossible with two swords. He was left swinging steel like a child all over again. Shortswords would have been preferable to the longswords but Ulric didn't have shortswords so he had to make due. Ulric brought the left sword up to block Hammer's first swing and the impact knocked the sword out of Ulric's hand. Damn! Ulric stumbled backwards, swinging his other longsword with one arm to force the combatant with a hammer back a little.

Hammer didn't stay back long, swinging his weapon upwards to try and knock Ulric off balance. It worked. The hammer struck the sword in Ulric's right hand a knocked it skyward but Ulric held onto it and stumbled back as a result. Then the fighter leapt into the air, thrusting the flat top of his mallet into Ulric's chest. There were no bones to break and the ectoplasm was as hard as stone so the impact send a painful shock up the fighter's arm. All the same it threw Ulric to the ground as well. He crashed onto his back, dropping his swords and rolling slightly.

Two points to the man with the hammer and Ulric hadn't landed a blow yet.

Ulric pushed himself up onto his feet and reached both hands out towards his swords, manifesting tendrils from his palms that wrapped around the hilts of each blade and pulled them into Ulric's hands. Hammer shook out the pain in his arm and then charged again. Ulric swept the sword in his left hand up from the ground, slinging dirt into Hammer's face as he grew near. Hammer brought his arms up to block the dirt and Ulric smacked the flat of the sword in his right hand across Hammer's leg. The fighter tripped and fell to the ground, surprised by the low impact.

One point to Ulric.

Then Hammer got up and rushed at the ghost. Ulric could see the rage in his eyes as the fighter charged at him without a weapon in hand- no! His hands were the weapons! Copper! Ulric dropped the sword in his left hand so it wouldn't hamper him and then brought his other hand to the grip of his longsword. He assumed a mid guard and shifted to the side to smack the fighter's arms down when they came for his throat.

Another point for Ulric.

But the fighter formerly holding a hammer headbutt Ulric when his arms were thrown down. That was a tactical mistake born of rage, because again, Ulric's skin was as hard as skin. Ulric didn't budge, but the fighter fell backwards holding his head in pain. Who got the point for that? The fighter doubled over and dropped to his knees and Ulric, unsure of if he got the point, kicked the fighter in the back while he was down to be sure.

And the crowd cheered for the ghost.

Notes:

I did not expect to read about a ghost participating in a fighting tournament... and I was happily surprised. I always love reading through combat-based threads and this one was a treat. All of the action/combat/blocking felt natural and was easy to visualize - I enjoyed Ulric's use of tendrils throughout, especially, as well as the moment when he realized that trying to wield two big swords at once might not have been a good idea.

My only complaint is that I wanted to read more of it. Poor Dagger & Hammer, they tried their best. (Maybe they should go into business and sell baking soda instead...) Glory to the victor.

Enjoy the rewards, and feel free to send me a PM with any questions or concerns.
