When Ari'sora had been told that class would be held outside totrial if the weather was nice, Ari'sora was delighted. It meant that the class would be held in the courtyard rather than in their usual classroom. And that meant that she would be able to spend more time flying before class than she usually would be able to. All she would have to do was land in the courtyard at the designated time, after all.

Ari'sora arrived at the University early. It was a beautiful trial, and she wanted to try something before class began. She had read a book many arcs ago about aerial dancers; Avriel who flowed through the skies as easily as the wind did. They wore bright costumes and did tricks, as well as dancing through the air to please their audience. Ari'sora had no idea if the aerial dancers were real or not, but she loved the idea of them. There was something very...freeing about dancing with the wind, and Ari'sora thought that the idea of learning tricks in the air sounded like great fun.

It was with that thought in mind that Ari'sora began flying in a series of loops that might have been somersaults had they been done on land. Forward and backward, slowly, and quickly, she experimented with them all. It quickly became obvious to her that if she flew her loop too quickly, she risked getting dizzy, so she made the decision to keep to a safe speed rather than risk crashing into something. At first, her loops were very large as she needed plenty of space to make them. but the more she practiced, the smaller she was able to make them. By the time she had to get to class, she had managed to get them down to the point where she only needed a few feet to complete a loop. Not quite the same as the somersaults she had seen a street performer to a few trials ago, but definitely close enough to be recognized as an aerial form of the stunt.

As Ari'sora approached the courtyard, she saw a couple of her classmates kicking a pig bladder ball around. She paid little notice to it until it popped. The loud, sudden noise startled her so badly that she instinctively swerved away from the sound. Ari'sora never saw the tree whose path she had flown into until it was too late. The pain was incredible, but it would have been a lot worse had she not already slowed in preparation for landing. She thrashed instinctively, trying to free herself from the branches of the tree, but her struggles only managed to make things worse.

The professor looked on with a disapproving frown while two of her fellow classmates climbed the tree. Between the three of them, they managed to get Ari'sora free from the branches, causing her to fall the last ten feet to the ground with a thud. Several of her classmates laughed. Ari'sora turned a deep shade of red as she scrambled to her feet, and checked herself over for injuries. There was nothing too serious, but she knew that she would be one massive bruise by this time the next trial.

"Don't worry, Ari'sora. You can crash into me any time." one of her male classmates said with a leer.

Ari'sora frowned in confusion. There was something...suggestive in the man's tone, but she couldn't figure out what it was for the life of her. The professor cleared his throat.

"If the entertainment is over for one trial, do you think that we could get back to the reason that we are all here?"

Ari'sora flushed again, and stammered an apology as she nodded quickly.

"The purpose of a language is to be able to communicate thoughts and ideas with others. Some languages are easier to learn than others. Some languages are spoken throughout Idalos like Common while others are only spoken in one specific area. Some languages aren't even spoken at all. But every language has one thing in common with every other language in the world. They all exist in order to allow people to communicate with one another."

Ari'sora scrambled to get some paper and a pen so that she could take notes on what the professor was saying. In the corner of her eye, she could see that several of the other students were doing the same thing. She wasn't certain what the professor meant about languages that weren't spoken until she remembered helping one of the orphans who live in Luna's Dream with one of their assignments from school. The young girl had been learning about Common Sign at the time. While Common Sign wasn't spoken out loud, it was "spoken" with one's hands. Still, perhaps that was what her professor had meant about not being spoken. Wanting to be certain, she raised her hand.

"Yes, Ari'sora?" the professor asked in annoyance at the interruption.

"You mentioned languages that weren't spoken. Do you mean Common Sign, which is a language of gestures made with your hands? Are there other languages like that?" Ari'sora asked curiously.

"That is one example of a language that isn't spoken, yes. And as for your other question, yes. There are a number of languages that are "spoken with your hands" as you say. Euthic Sign is another example of such a language. But a language that consists of hand gestures is only one example of a language that isn't spoken. Take Avrielian Script for example. Avrielian Script originated in Athart, and is used only by the Avriel. It is one example of several languages that are written, but do not have a spoken component. Other languages, such as Lorien, which also originated in Athart and is used by the Avriel, have a spoken component but not a written one."

Ari'sora listened avidly as she wrote everything down. She had heard of Lorien before, but she had not known that it was a language that could only be spoken. And this was the first time she had heard of either Avrielian Script or Euthic Sign. She wanted to learn more about both, so she made a mental note to do some research about them later.

"We're nearly out of time, so I will end the lecture there. You homework will be to research five languages of your choice and write a paper about them that will discuss the similarities and differences between each of your chosen languages. Two of the languages you choose for this assignment must be ones that do not have a spoken form, and at least one must be one that does not have a written form. Your paper will be due at the beginning of our next class."

Ari'sora quickly jotted down the assignment and when it was due. Her mind was already turning towards the languages that she wanted to write about. The prospect of researching them was an exciting one, and she couldn't wait to get started.

"I also want to take this time to inform you of a special treat that those of you who continue studying linguistics next cycle will be able to enjoy. Next cycle, a renowned professor from the Viden University will be coming here for a debate. While they are here, they have offered to give a guest lecture focused on the Ancient Language."

Ari'sora was jolted out of her thoughts by the mention of another language that she had never even heard of before, and she gave her professor her undivided attention. From the excited murmurs of her classmates, she could tell that this was a very big thing. Several of the other students raised their hands. After a few trills, the professor gestured at a young woman who was standing next to Ari'sora.

"I've heard that the Ancient Language originated in Viden, and that it is primarily spoken by the Eidisi. Is this true, Professor? And if so, does that mean that the professor who is coming from the Viden University is an Eidisi?"

The professor nodded, and Ari'sora scrambled to write this new information down.

"The answers to both of those questions is yes."

"I've heard that the Ancient Language is the language of the Immortals and that few mortals other than the Eidisi can understand it. Is this true, Professor?"

When the professor nodded again, Ari'sora's eyes widened in awe. The language of the Immortals...she had never realized that they would have their own language, but hearing it discussed now, it only made sense that they would. Knowing this made Ari'sora want to learn the language even more...but would the Immortals be upset if mortals understood their language? That was something to consider. It was possible that they might see that as a sign of disrespect. And yet...if this guest professor was going to be giving a lecture about the language, maybe it meant that they wouldn't mind?

"That is also true. The Ancient Language is a very difficult language to learn, possibly because it is the language of the Immortals. Another reason is that information about the language is very hard to come by unless it is through an Eidisi or through a book that an Eidisi author has written on the subject. It has both a spoken and a written form. I know that many of you are interested in the Ancient Language, but I must caution you that it will not be acceptable as one of the languages you research for your current paper. And before you ask why, the answer is simple. You won't be able to find enough information about it in your research. While we do have books on the language here at the University, they will not be available to students of your level."

Ari'sora nodded to herself. That meant a lot of sense to her, but it also made her even more eager to attend the guest lecture next cycle. The professor dismissed the class and Ari'sora began packing up her notes, her mind already turning back to the assignment she had been given.

Comments: This was a fun class thread. Normally I'd be afraid that such a thread would be boring, but the action kept me interested, just as the dialogue did.

One note about Euthic sign, it's not only spoken with the hands, but with postures, with brushes of the hair, small things that would go unnoticed by anyone not familiar with it or the Naer. It's more of a hidden language, and one I'm surprised that the University managed to uncover information about! For more information on Euthic sign I think there is plenty in the Naer write-up (if you're interested).

Great job and enjoy your rewards!
