Linguistics 101

Ari'sora was running late. Well...not really. She wasn't in danger of being late to class yet, but since this was her first class at the university...and the first class at any kind of school she had ever gone to before...she had wanted to be there early. But no matter how hard she tried, she couldn't seem to find the classroom she was supposed to go to.

She paused briefly to consult the paper that told her which classroom the class was being held in, then looked around at the room numbers.

It should be right around here somewhere! she thought in frustration.

The class is being held in room 105, and I'm, standing right in front of room 109, so it has to be here somewhere!

A strange moaning sound caught her attention, distracting her from her thoughts. It was followed by the sound of a desk being pushed aside. The sounds seemed to be coming from a few doors down. Worried that someone was sick or hurt, Ari'sora headed in that direction, and poked her head into the classroom where she had heard the sounds coming from. She promptly wished she hadn't.

In the far corner of the room, a couple was kissing passionately. From the looks of it, things were progressing a lot further...rapidly. Ari'sora's foot scuffed on the floor as she took a step back. The couple froze. As one, they turned to stare at her wide eyed as they paled. Ari'sora blushed a deep shade of red, muttered something incomprehensible and retreated the way she had come. She made sure to shut the door behind her.

"That was...not the right classroom." she muttered to herself as she backed away hastily.

"That was...that was..." Ari'sora shuddered.

She couldn't quite wrap her head around the fact that some people actually enjoyed that sort of thing, never mind were willing to do it in a place where someone might see them. Ari'sora tried to shove the images of what she had seen out of her head as she went back to trying to find the classroom she was supposed to be in.

It took her a while longer to find the classroom she was supposed to be in, but that was a good thing. She needed that time to ease her embarrassment at having seen something she really shouldn't have seen, and to get rid of the deep blush that was staining her cheeks. Fortunately, she managed to find her classroom before she was late. She slipped into the room and quickly found an empty seat in the back of the room.

She didn't have long to wait. The professor entered the room a few bits after she had found her seat. She was a tall woman who wore her hair in a bun. The woman looked to be at least fifty arcs, and she had a stern, no nonsense expression. But her large brown eyes had a warm glow, and seemed to be smiling despite the neutral expression on her lips.

"This is an introductory class to linguistics that is mandatory for everyone in the department to take. Most of you are working on getting your letter in linguistics. Some of you have tested out of that and are working on getting your certificate. A few are even working on getting your diploma. Those of you who are that far into your studies may be wondering why this class is mandatory for you as well as students who are just starting your studies. This class is an introduction into linguistics. It will explore what linguistics is, of course. But it will also give you an idea of what career paths are open to people with different levels of linguistics degrees."

Ari'sora paid close attention to what the professor was telling her. She had wondered why she had to take an introductory course after she had tested into going straight into earning her diploma. But the older woman had a very good point. She herself had little idea of what you could do to earn a living with a linguistics degree aside from the obvious; teaching linguistics or teaching different languages to people who were interested in learning them. She was already thinking about the possibility of teaching the kids who lived at Luna's Dream orphanage new languages once she had earned her diploma. But judging by what the professor was saying, there were other things that you could do with a degree in linguistics...maybe even a lot of things that you could do with one.

"Does anyone know how many languages exist in Idalos?"

Ari'sora considered the question. There was Scalveen, of course, and Common. Dehasin, Haltunga, Lorien, Xanthea, and Rakahi. Then there was Common Sign as well. Those were the ones that she could actually speak in one form or another. She knew of thirty four languages in all, but for most, she little more than their name. Rakahi, Haltunga, Lorien, and Xanthea were languages that belonged to specific races. Did all races have their own languages? Scalveen was a language that was spoken only on Scalvoris from what Ari'sora could tell. Were there other cities...other lands that had a language that was only spoken in that one area?

"There are fifty two languages in Idalos totrial." the professor said when no one had answered after several bits.

Ari'sora was impressed. Think of all of the stories one could read if one knew all fifty two languages!

"Some of them are easier to learn than others."

Ari'sora found herself nodding in agreement even as she began taking notes. She had found that some of the languages she knew were a lot easier to learn than others had been. Dehasin had been the hardest one to learn, but Ari'sora had assumed that it was because of the circumstances she had been in at the time. Being a captive and being forced to learn an language with risk of punishment for failure didn't make for a pleasant or easy learning experience.

"The study of linguistics involves both the study of language in general, and the learning of new languages. Simply knowing a lot of different languages does not make you a linguist. At the same time, someone who isn't interested in learning about new languages isn't really a true linguist."

That made a lot of sense to Ari'sora, and she found herself agreeing wholeheartedly with what the professor was saying. One of her goals in life was to learn every language in Idalos. And it seemed to her that if someone was interested in linguistics, they would also be interested in languages. And vice versa.

"Learning the history is a part of linguistics as well. Knowing the history of language is important because knowing the history of a language shows how it has evolved in the past. It also suggests ways it may continue to evolve in the future."

Again, Ari'sora found herself agreeing with what the professor was saying. She knew that Scalveen was partially made up of words from Common, Xanthea, and Rakahi as well as having its own words. It was fascinating to think that other languages had impacted Scalveen in such a way, and she wondered if Scalveen had impacted any other languages in return. That seemed less likely since it was only spoken on the island from what she could see, but it was still interesting to think about.

"You mentioned that there are a variety of different jobs that one can do with a degree in linguistics. What kinds of jobs are available?" one of the students asked once she had been called on.

"Teaching languages is an obvious one, of course. Teaching linguistics itself is another side of the same coin. But you could also translate books into your native languages, or into other languages you know. You could also translate for people who need to communicate with each other, but do not share a common language. You could be a scholar who studies dead languages, and tries to bring them back. You could even discover a new language."

Ari'sora blinked, startled by the idea of discovering a new language. As the murmured in confusion, the professor continued.

"There are a number of tribes living in the jungle here in Scalvoris. There may be more tribes who speak a language that we haven't existed yet. There may be other peoples in other lands who speak languages that only they know about. Likewise, there are many ruins scattered throughout Idalos. Who knows how many more are still left to discover? How many of them have records of languages that may be dead now that have never been discovered before? You could even spend your life studying languages to see how they evolved, and how they are connected to each other."

Ari'sora jotted down some notes about the various jobs that were available to a linguist. Several of them were ones that she had never even heard of before.

"Being a linguist requires a lot of research. Fortunately, it is a field of study where research is relatively easy to do. Many languages, especially the more common ones can be learned out of books. There is also a lot of information about linguistics and the history of languages that can be learned out of books as well."

Some of the students groaned at the mention of research, but Ari'sora felt excited by it. After all, research was reading, and searching for the answers to questions that you had. And that was quite possible one of Ari'sora's favorite things to do. As the class continued, Ari'sora paid close attention, fascinated by the professor's every word. She had believed that she knew a good amount about languages and linguistics before starting her studies at the university. But even in this, an introductory class, she found that there was an entire world of information that she didn't know. And that only made her more determined to learn even more.

Overview

An interesting thread about linguistics and the many different purposes you can use it for. Arisora's search for the rigt classroom was entertaining and I think many of us have made the experience in real life, running around in search for the right rooms in schools or workplaces with mysterious layouts! Good thing that she arrived at her lesson at last!

Well done and enjoy your rewards!

Arisora
