Ready, Set, Howl
1st Ymiden, 716 Arc
1st Ymiden, 716 Arc
The city of Desnind was home to what felt like thousands, though one couldn’t begin or want to actually count, especially for a day like today. The day, the 1st of Ymiden of Arc 716, was alive and full of festivity. Smells of The Stew wafted throughout the air as sea breeze from the distant Gwalos pushed leaves to and fro. Smoke from the fire pit spit into the air and up into the canopies like usual, but today the flames roared hotter and larger. Across the fire pit were varieties of different large animals spinning to roast. The smell was marvelous.
Various hunters and cooks gathered around the pits, sharing in stories and food, enjoying their time. Children danced across main root laughing and playing while pretending to take part in their own races and challenges. They spoke of one of the main festivities of the day. An obstacle course set by Moseke’s Temple in the heart of the city. The perfectly circular tree could be seen from a distance of the fire pits, it’s large roots encompassing the stone temple. Even in the city, nature was as present and highly regarded as the surrounding forest further from the shores of Gwalos and Ta’lengean.
Variety of different people all with a different spiritual connection walked the streets, gravitating to observe the main event. Tai’klein was amongst one of the many, and while sharing smiles with others as a rare headed Sev’ryn… walked towards Moseke’s Temple and the obstacle courses. The first seen course was bustling with people, and couldn’t offer a good spot to sport a sight at what the course was composed of. At least not to Tai’klein whose nerves would not allow him to readily fight through the crowd. Rei’sch, his wolf familiar was also tense at the sheer number of people. Every now and then the pure white wolf would walk ahead of Tai’klein only to fall back to Tai’klein’s side as the two felt safest together.
As Tai’klein and Reisch made their way to the other side of Moseke’s Temple which was closer to the sea, they were able to make out more of the course. Not a one could hide their more competitive nature, and the thrill of the course almost entranced them to participate. Alongside the course a few other competitors watched and waiting patiently for their turn. Tai’klein overheard a few them arguing with each other.
“No way you could make it through the first part. You are far too fat!”
A hearty laugh was heard from the fatter one of the group “A bit too much stew I guess!”
“Even if you could make it through, the next part requires quick footing.”
The fat man replied with a snarky remark “That would be where you would surely fall. You couldn’t walk straight sober much less drunk.”
They both shared in a laugh and continued on into the course where both of them got ensnared at the first course and was caught from the ropes of the web laughing at each other’s silly position as they worked their way down to the ground.
Tai’klein smiled as he observed all of this, but mostly kept his distance, and a watchful eye as if looking at the course as it was a prey. Only when he knew of everything it enticed would he pounce to make the kill… challenge.
It would take instinct to get him through this obstacle course, and he had plenty of it. His deeper ambitions and spirit of a wolf looked at the course. Three obstacles. The first was like a spiders web would be made on the inside of a hollow log. The next gained some height from the first, and would require great balance to make it through. It was much like if one was to navigate through the woods and attempt to jump and balance across the great roots of the forest, or perhaps even the canopy of limbs up above. It was something melded as a wolf Tai’klein would surely be able to do, but the thoughts of a wolf up in the limbs of a tree almost made him laugh out loud. Never would such a divine creature be seen where the birds of prey roam, right?
The last was a test of strength or dexterity. It was up to the competitor to decide which, on either side there was a set of bars which span across a 12 foot gap. The other was a series of platforms hanging above the gap which led to the other side, and then the finish line.
A few people worked at moderating the obstacle course making sure there was no foul play, or if someone was hurt during their competition that they were seen to. They also seemed to allow people to go through the course in between times of when real competitors would attempt their fate at crossing the finish line.
Tai’klein watched in awe as he saw a competitor give it his all, but eventually failed, falling into the pit of the 12 foot gap as he jumped from platform to platform. He was the closest that of any that he had seen at this particular course. As the wind blew from the sea, the platforms swayed both from the reaction of force of landing on them, and from the wind. The man was no true sportsman though, as he stormed off nearly bumping into Tai’klein.
Rei’sch let out a growl as to warn the man, and in response Tai’klein snarled out “Hey, Watch it. You could always attempt again!” Though, the man simply ignored his attempt at socialization and walked away. “Geeze, it isn’t that serious is it Rei’sch? Well what have you, want to give it a try before me?” Tai’klein asked his familiar openly. The wolf’s ears slightly lowered in response as he sat down in front of Tai’klein’s feet. Tai’klein gently rubbed the top of Rei’sch’s head and laughed.
