Lets Get Physical, Physical!

75 Ashan 720
It had been a long while since Balthazar had taken a trial just for himself. Lately he'd always been torn between his work for the Elements, his training with Isabella, and his own private investigative pursuits of magic. He hadn't had a lot of time to focus on himself and his body. So on the seventy fifth trial of Ashan Balthazar went down to the Scalvoris beach to spend a little time working one things that weren't life or death concerns. He wore brown pants which he'd rolled up to his calves and a white shirt with sleeves rolled up to his elbows. He hadn't worn any shoes because he knew he'd just have to carry them around and the earth softened for him as he walked anyways so there really would have been no point. When Balthazar arrived at the beach he began his exercises with a little jog. Running in the sand was far more difficult that running on the street- at least that was what Balthazar discovered when he began his run.

He went a good distance, comforted by the feeling of the wind on his warm face, but eventually his stamina began to thin. It thinned far faster than Balthazar had expected it to due to the increased resistance of sand. So when he could no longer run, Balthazar stomped his feet and called upon the ether in his body to level out the ground around him. Sand reacted differently than your typical stone. It was harder to control because it was earth fractured into such small pieces it gave off the appearance of something else. But it was also hard because a good portion of the red sands was comprised of shells that he could not manipulate. So Balthazar found himself bringing his hands into a circular motion. With every circle his hands completed, the sand around him began to flatten a little more until Balthazar was finally satisfied with the workout space he'd created.

"Alright. So how do I wanna start?" He asked himself out loud before dropping into a pushup position. He'd seen men doing this quite frequently in the Element training areas and understood the basic concept. This wasn't his first foray into body weight strength training but it had been a bit all the same.

Ari'sora had a free trial totrial. She wasn't expected in to work, and Mi'zuri and Ryl'ryn were watching the kids. So she had lazed about in bed for an extra break, cuddled up with a good book which she and Shadow took turns reading to each other. They had created voices for each of the characters in the story, and it was a great deal of fun trying to be as silly as they could to see who could make the other laugh first.

As fun as it was, Ari'sora wasn't one to laze about for long, so when they reached the end of the short story they were reading, she got up. Shadow went to see what the kittens were up to, and Ari'sora followed her; their antics were always amusing to watch. Ari'sora thought it strange that two of them were still kittens after a bit more than an arc, but they definitely were. Seirei and Luna still had the endless energy and mischief of a kitten wanting to play, and they still looked like kittens rather than the full grown cats she would have expected them to be at this point. Of course, they weren't normal cats at all. Normal cats didn't talk in your head and transform into bigger versions of themselves at will. Storm didn't do either of those things, but Ari'sora was convinced that she was smarter than a normal cat usually was. She seemed to obey her sisters well enough even if she did look as though she was older than them now. Of the three kittens, she was the only one who looked as though they were an arc old. That didn't mean that she acted like it, though. Storm was always more than willing to tumble about and get into whatever mischief her sisters were up to.

After a while, she went to see about getting breakfast started, but Ryl'ryn had already beaten her to it. When her friend handed her a plate of fruit, bread, and cheese, she stared at her for a trill in bemusement before thanking her and taking it. She ate slowly, enjoying the luxury of being able to do so. When she was done, she did the dishes, and headed out.

The weather was far too beautiful to be stuck indoors all trial if she didn't have to be. Within trills, she was up in the air, and laughing for the sheer delight of feeling the wind in her wings. She flew aimlessly, simply enjoying the feeling of being high above the rest of the world.

Her flight brought her to the beach. The winds were different here than they were in the city itself. Freer somehow. Perhaps it was because they were coming over the water, bringing scents of things from far off shores, or so she imagined. All she could really smell was the salt from the ocean. Or perhaps it was because there were fewer building and such around to corral the movement of the wind. Whatever the reason, Ari'sora loved it. She vowed to herself that she would fly over the beach more often.

For a while, she danced with the wind currents. Flying through some, and around others. She flew out over the water, only to come back and fly over the ribbon of sand a few bits later. The water sparkled like diamonds from the height she was at, and it was a beautiful sight that she would cherish whenever she saw it. The world was a very different place when you were high above it. You could see the beauty it had to offer without seeing the cruelty of people marring it.

After a while, she came to see a strange sight. A man was lying on the sand. Was he hurt? No...after watching him intently for a few trills, she saw that he was moving. He wasn't trying to get up, though, and that confused her. Instead, he was...pushing against the ground? That's what it looked like, at least, though Ari'sora couldn't even begin to guess why he might want to do that.

She watched him for a few more trills as she tried to figure out what he was doing before she decided that she might as well simply ask him. So she circled the area, dropping altitude slowly as she did so until she came to a landing not far from where the man was.

"Why are you pushing against the ground like that?" she asked curiously.

"I don't think that it's going to go anywhere even if you try to push it away..."

Of course, for all she knew it very well might. This was Scalvoris, after all, and stranger things had happened in the past.

Re: Lets Get Physical, Physical!

75 Ashan 720
Balthazar wasn't counting the number of times he lifted his body up from the floor, he didn't think it would matter. He didn't understand the concept of repetition and sets of exercises because he didn't "work out" per say. Most of Balthazar's conditioning had come from his efforts to teach himself unarmed combat. In that effort he learned or created a set of moves and then worked on them until he could perform the moves perfectly or near perfectly enough that your average person wouldn't be able to tell the difference. When he ran it was generally because he was on another chase for work. Granted the Elements had introduced him to all kinds of new ideas about physical enhancement, some more achievable than others. Anyhow the point was what Balthazar was not counting his push ups and as a result he didn't know how many he'd been doing when Ari'sora descended from the sky to the sand around him. He wasn't exactly surprised by her arrival, having heard the flapping of her large, black wings.

"That's not quite what I'm going for." Balthazar said as he rose to his feet and dusted the sand from his hands, then his shirt, then his pants. He could feel some burn in his arm now and knew that meant he was doing something right. It wasn't the same burn he felt when he used magic but it was similar in ways. "Physical conditioning." Balthazar said as if it explained itself to the newcomer before him. His eyes naturally fell on her wings before they reached her twilight blue eyes. "I'm trying to get stronger and pushing your weight off the ground is supposed to help." He elaborated "Try it, you can feel the results in your arms after a few." Balthazar was fortunate to have a proportional height and weight ratio so he was able to do the excersize with a little more ease that Ari'sora might have been, if she even wanted to. Balthazar was mostly trying to make it seem like he wasn't crazy for pushing sand.

The words "physical conditioning" held very little meaning to Ari'sora. She knew what they meant individually, but the phrase wasn't one she had ever heard of before. But when the man continued to explain, things began to make more sense.

"So when you push your weight off the ground like that, it's the same as when I flap my wings vigorously when I'm not trying to fly. By doing that, my wings get stronger, and I am able to fly for longer periods of time, and I am able to handle stronger wind currents than I would have been able to if I hadn't exercised my wings. Only...you don't have wings, so instead of trying to strengthen those, you are trying to strengthen your...arms? Back? Everything?" she asked curiously.

The man had suggested that she try it for herself, and Ari'sora was curious enough to try. She could already see the advantage in strengthening her wings. And since she was desperately trying to learn how to defend herself so she couldn't be taken captive again, it made sense to strengthen the rest of her body as well.

With that thought in mind, Ari'sora took a position that was similar to the one the man had been in. It wasn't easy to do, and she felt horribly off balance, but she was curious enough to want to try. And the man was right. After a few attempts at pushing the ground away from her...err...pushing her weight off of the ground, she could feel a burning pain in her arms. It was the same type of pain that she had felt the first several times she had tried to strengthen her wings.

"That's not easy to do." she said as she stood up once more.

"How many do you have to do before you start to get stronger?"

"I think it's the same concept." Balthazar admit. He didn't have wings so he didn't really know if it was the same but it seemed to help the girl understand so he didn't deprive her of the analogy. Balthazar rotated his shoulders a little and then lifted his arms above his head to try and feel out the burn slowly setting into his muscles. There was definitely some burn in his back but he wasn't sure how it related to the burn in his arms. He needed to spend more time looking over his encyclopedia set on the physical sciences... maybe he'd read something useful in that. "I'm trying to strengthen my whole body." He replied with some confidence as he widened his legs and did a few stretches to the left and right. "Stretching helps with flexibility. I'm not sure what that really means but the other Element's tell me it's important." Balthazar bent over and stretched his lower back before resuming a more normal stance.

"I'm not sure. More?" Balthazar replied with uncertainty when Ari'sora asked how many they'd have to do to get stronger. He'd seen the routines while training with the other Elements but the concept of repetitions and sets of the exercise were still a little beyond Balthazar. "Just do as many as you can, then take a break till you can do more or something." Balthazar lowered himself back into a pushup position and raised his butt a little so that his back would be level. "Try to keep your back straight and your feet together- it makes it a little harder but I think that's how it's meant to be done." Balthazar did one pushup, then another, and another, then he rose back into a standing position. His arms weren't spent after three but he hadn't only done three, he'd done a bunch before Ari'sora arrived to ask questions.

Balthazar held his hands out in front of himself and attempted a squat that didn't quite seem to have the right form. Like the others, this was an exercise he'd witness and was trying to imitate but he didn't know the proper alignment and was doing them without and weights so it didn't seem as if it was doing anything. After ten squats Balthazar stopped and looked at his legs. Rubbish... he'd have to run for them.

The man told her that he was trying to strengthen his whole body, and after thinking about that for several trills, Ari'sora decided that it made sense to do that.

"That makes sense. If only one part of you gets stronger, then the weak parts can still make things difficult...maybe."

It wasn't a concept that she knew much about, and the idea made a lot more sense in her head than it did when she spoke the words out loud. When the man told her that stretching helps with flexibility, she made a mental note of it, but she didn't know what that meant any more than the man seemed to. The concept of doing as many pushups as she could then taking a break until she could do more made a lot more sense to her. Maybe the idea was to do a set number of them each trial, and when it wasn't hard to do them anymore, it meant that you were stronger and that you should add more so you could get stronger still? She asked the man if her idea made any sense, then asked how many he could do before he couldn't do any more. Knowing that might give her an idea of how many she should start out doing each trial.

Ari'sora got down on the ground once more and started doing some more pushups. The man corrected her, telling her how to do them better, and she thanked him when he did. As she was working on her pushups, he began squatting down and standing back up again.

"Is that supposed to make you stronger too?" she asked curiously, somewhat breathless from her own efforts.

Maybe it was supposed to strengthen his legs the way pushups seemed to be for making one's arms stronger?

Re: Lets Get Physical, Physical!

Balthazar reasoned he could probably do two hundred pushups a trial... especially if he distanced them out... maybe two hundred and fifty with a little extra effort. He told Ari'sora that much when she asked him but added that they had very different bodies and so she should probably just test to figure out her own limit. He didn't know if race affected your strength. Were Ithecal inherently stronger than humans? Was that racist? Balthazar shook the forming chain of thoughts from his mind and returned his attention to the workout. Ari'sora had asked Balthazar a question about the squats and he'd left it hanging for far too long. "I think so, again I just saw other Elements doing it, but it doesn't feel like it is doing anything." Balthazar admit as he did a few more squats. Now he did them out of curiosity to see how many he could do before feeling something or getting bored. Maybe he needed more weight?

Thirty two. It turns out that was how many squats Balthazar could do before feeling something and deciding to move to another workout. But he did not know what to do next. There had been heavy objects to lift while he was at the Element Hall and weapons to train with though that wasn't exactly the workout he was looking for now. Balthazar watched Ari'sora doing her pushups and decided that he too would go back to pushups. As he began, he also tried to strike up a conversation with Ari'sora- partially to get to know her and partially to try and distract himself from the effort. Yet when his words came out he seemed almost short of breath already. "I'm running out of ideas, do you have any?"

When the man told Ari'sora that he could do two hundred, or maybe even two hundred and fifty pushups, her eyes widened in a mixture of shock and awe. She had only done fifteen so far, and already her arms were burning with the effort. Two hundred or more sounded so far beyond her reach that someone might have told her to try and fly to the sun and bring some of its light back for them. She felt a little better when he suggested that she test what her own limit was, and told her that different body types might have an effect on the number of pushups one could do. That...actually made a great deal of sense to her. Hathelrri was a Lotharro, and he was immensely strong; far too strong for her to resist. He could probably do a million pushups and not get tired.

She nodded when he answered her question about the squats, but after hearing that he wasn't really feeling any benefit from them, she decided that she wouldn't try any herself just yet. Instead, she continued to do more pushups, testing her limit. The man asked her if she had any ideas for different things they could try, and she gave it some thought even as she continued counting.

When she reached thirty five, her arms felt so rubbery that she thought that she might collapse if she kept going any further.

"I think thirty five is my limit right now. But I have to wonder if it is possible to increase that limit, and if you would get stronger by doing so? Like...thirty five is my limit totrial, but if I do that many every trial for a seventrial or so, maybe I could add one or two more as I get used to doing it?" she mused out loud.

She turned around so that she was sitting up so that she could give her arms a rest.

"As for ideas...what about lifting things? Heavy things, I mean. I live in Beacon, and one of the things I do there is to help out on the farm in the village. Carrying heavy buckets filled with water to water the crops makes my arms burn as much as this does."

After a few trills, another idea came to her. When she was in Emea before it fell, there had been a time when she had needed to run. And any time she wanted to fly, and had to take a few running steps to launch herself into the air first.

"And what about running? It seems to me that the more practice running you get, the faster you will be. And it might make your legs stronger too."

She eyed the sand thoughtfully.

"I've never tried it, but when you think about it...sand shifts under your feet when you walk on it. That makes it harder to walk on sand than it is on normal ground. It only makes sense to think that if it is harder to walk on sand, it would be harder to run on it too...so maybe doing that would make you stronger if you did it enough?"

Re: Lets Get Physical, Physical!

75 Ashan 720
Balthazar continued doing his pushups in silence for a few trills after Ari'sora had spoken. He meant to answer her but he was distracted with the workout and too short of breath to form full sentences. If she listened really closely she could hear the faintest sound of counting escaping Balthazar's lips as he moved up, down, up, down, up down, over and over again. Was he at twenty? No probably a few more than that just before his arms gave and he fell forward into the sand. Balthazar rolled onto his back and propped himself up with his elbows.

"Give it a few bits and you might be able to do thirty five again." Balthazar cautioned Ari'sora when she said that thirty five was her limit. From his many, many battles he knew that after a little while the pain and strain would diminished enough for you to believe you could do more. He listened to her muse about the possibility of increasing the limit and nodded along slightly. That was indeed the idea he was going for with the workout and he was glad she was coming to the same conclusions he had. It made him feel as if he wasn't entirely off track. Then she proposed the idea that they lift heavy things.

Heavy things? What heavy things? Balthazar could probably coax the sand around them to harden into the loose shapes of weights but he didn't know where to begin. He didn't know how much sand was needed to produce a certain weight and he didn't know how much weight they could lift. Then an odd idea crossed Balthazar's mind and he looked over to Ari'sora curiously. No... she'd never go for it. He thought to himself after a few trills. What was the most common thing he had to lift? People. Before his curiosity could get the better of him Ari'sora proposed the idea of running. From his time working as an Element around Scalvoris Town, Almund, and the various islands, Balthazar could confirm that running on the sand was indeed harder than running on more flat land.

"You're right about the sand." He said as he looked a little bit off down the beach. "So how about a race?" Balthazar asked his new workout buddy. "We go from right here to..." Balthazar's voice trailed off and he crouched down. He placed his hand against the sand and slowly dug it deeper into the earth. He reached out across the land with his ether and summoned a small rectangular stump about a hundred feet away from them down the beach. Then he pulled his hand from the sand and pointed to the stump he'd made. "To there. Then we turn and fly back to here? He hadn't established stakes for the race cause he wasn't thinking past the physical activity, but if Ari'sora wanted to make a betting game of it Balthazar would play along.

Ari'sora considered the man's words carefully.

"So...sets of pushups, then? How many sets of thirty five pushups should I do to get stronger, and how long should I wait in between sets?" she asked curiously.

Then she hesitated, wondering if she was asking to many questions. But after a few trills, the urge was too strong for her to resist.

"Should other types of exercise be done in sets too?"

When the man gave her a curious look, Ari'sora squirmed a little out of sheer nervousness. He didn't look angry...yet...but why was he looking at her like that? Was it because he was wondering how one person could ask as many questions as she did? Was he getting angry with her? She wanted to ask, but she couldn't quite bring herself to.

When the man told her that she had been right about running in the sand, she smiled. Maybe he wasn't angry at her if he thought she was right about the sand, and was willing to admit it to her. Did that mean that he didn't mind her questions? Would it be okay if she were to ask more? While Ari'sora was busy thinking about this, the man suggested a race. She was about to ask where to when he showed her...by placing his hand on the sand. Before Ari'sora could even think to ask why he had done that, she heard something not all that far from where they were standing. Startled, she looked up to see a lump of earth growing out of the ground at a rapid pace. It was as if the man had somehow pulled it out of the ground just by placing his hand on the sand. Ari'sora stared at the lump for several trills before turning back to the man.

"How did you do that?" she asked in wonder.

"You did do that, didn't you...by placing your hand on the ground? Is it magic? Did you wish for the stump to appear, or is your hand magical somehow?" she asked eagerly.

It took her a few trills to realize that he had asked her a question, too. She nodded.

"Why not? A race sounds like fun." she said simply.

Then she frowned, and she stared at the man again, her eyes wide as she examined him for wings that she had somehow missed until now.

"But...fly back? How? I mean...I can fly, of course. But unless they're invisible, you don't have any wings..."

Rei'sari was formerly Ari'sora, but after getting a fresh start in life and a new appearance from Vega, she changed her name to Rei'sari.
