Save the Books!

They had decided to make a trial out of it. Ari'sora, Ryl'ryn and Mi'zuri bundled up the kids, and made their way to the town square. They were running low on a lot of things, and if they each split up to do some of the shopping, they would finish sooner, and they could all eat lunch together before heading home.

Ari'sora took Rin'saia with her, and headed towards the food stalls. Ryl'ryn took Sai'rin and made her way towards the cloth merchants. That left Mi'zuri with Ryusar, and she headed over towards the stalls that were selling toys. Three breaks later, they met up at a small cafe that they had decided to eat lunch at before they split up.

"You won't regret eating here." Mi'zuri reassured them.

"They have the best sandwiches, and their prices are pretty decent."

It wasn't hard to find a seat since the cold of the season kept most people home. They browsed through the menu for a bit before giving their orders to the waitress. The food came quickly, and they made certain to feed the kids before eating themselves. When Ari'sora bit into her hot sandwich, she was pleasantly surprised; Mi'zuri had been right about how good the sandwiches were.

Ryl'ryn and Mi'zuri made polite conversation as they ate, asking each other how their part of the shopping went. Ari'sora listened in, but she didn't add much to the conversation. Shopping had taken its toll on her, and she was more than ready to rest for a while. They had just about finished their meal when the town crier walked past them.

"The librarian is asking for help in getting the snow off the roof of the library! The weight of the snow on the library roof is enough to damage it, and if it collapses, all of the books contained within the library will be lost!" he shouted.

Ari'sora stood abruptly, determination burning in her eyes. Ryl'ryn chuckled as she stood as well.

"You don't even need to ask. I'm in too." she said before Ari'sora could say anything.

Mi'zuri rolled her eyes, but she stood as well.

"I'm in too, I guess. If I don't help, I'll never hear the end of it." she muttered.

"But if all three of us are going, someone's going to have to keep an eye on the kids while we're working."

Ari'sora nodded absently, but her mind was already fixed on the task at hand; getting to the library as quickly as possible, and helping out in any way she could. Her weariness from mere bits before was forgotten in the face of the threat to the books.

When they arrived, Ari'sora was relived to see that they were not the only ones who had responded to the call for help. A slightly overweight middle aged woman had taken charge of the situation, and her loud, commanding voice could be heard clearly over the myriad of conversations that were being held among the volunteers, and the many questions being asked. Ari'sora, Ryl'ryn, and Mi'zuri approached her when there was a pause in the organized chaos.

"What can we do to help?" Ari'sora asked when the woman gave them a questioning look.

The woman looked them over carefully. Her eyes lingered on Ari'sora's swollen belly for a few trills before she spoke.

"We have a place set aside where some of the volunteers who aren't up to a lot of physical exertion are watching the kids of those who are. It saves the time of having to take them home before you can help. You can leave your kids with them to start." she began, gesturing in the direction of where the kids were being kept.

Ari'sora looked in the direction the woman was pointing in, and saw several older men and women looking after a dozen or so children of varying ages. She nodded. It solved the problem of what to do with the kids while they were helping to get the snow off of the library roof.

"Once you've done that, the two of you that have wings can fly up to the roof and start shoveling snow off of it. The shovels are over there." she continued, gesturing over to a large pile of shovels.

"As for you, you can either climb up to the roof with them, or you can join the others on the ground who are taking the snow and piling it up over there where it won't be in the way." she told Mi'zuri.

Mi'zuri considered her options for a few trills, then decided that she would join the workers on the ground.

"The snow is heavier than it looks." the woman cautioned them as they were about to take the kids over to where the other children were being looked after.

"You need to bend your knees when lifting the snow you're shoveling just like you would when you're lifting anything else that is heavy, or you risk injury."

She turned to Ari'sora.

"If we weren't desperate for volunteers, I wouldn't let you help in your condition." she said, looking at her swollen belly pointedly.

"As it is...we are that desperate. Even so, if I think you're over doing it, I'll pull you off shoveling snow, and send you to help keep an eye on the kids. Understood?"

Ari'sora nodded in acceptance. The woman gave her a satisfied look, then told them to get to work.

Ari'sora dropped Rin'saia off where the other kids were being watched, then headed over to get her shovel. Ryl'ryn and Mi'zuri followed suit. When everyone had what they needed, they split up. Mi'zuri went to join the ground crew while Ari'sora and Ryl'ryn flew up to the roof. Ari'sora noticed that it was harder for her to fly with the additional weight of her unborn child and the shovel. It wasn't much additional weight, but Ari'sora could feel the difference immediately. Her wings had to labor that much harder for her to get the lift she needed to fly up to the roof, and it took her longer to get up there than it did for Ryl'ryn even though they had started at the same time.

Ryl'ryn watched her with a look of concern as she landed.

"I'll be keeping an eye on you. If I think you're overworking yourself, I won't hesitate to tell the woman in charge." she warned.

Ari'sora grimaced, but she nodded in agreement. When something was truly important to her, it was often easy for her to forget that she needed to take it easy until her child was born. And this was that important to her.

They got to work, and Ari'sora quickly realized that shoveling snow was even harder when she was balanced on a roof. Especially one that was slippery with snow. She found that she had to spread her wings just to help her keep her balance. She also noticed that it was easier to carry the snow she was shoveling over to the edge to drop it off the roof if she balanced it carefully. Not balancing the weight evenly often caused the shovel to tip to one side or the other and dump the snow she had just scooped up. This became even more true after she had been working for awhile, and her muscles began to burn and ache with exertion.

After a few breaks, exhaustion began to take its toll. Her eyes began to blur, and it seemed as if every muscle in her body ached fiercely from the exertion. Her entire world narrowed down to the task at hand. Scoop up a shovel full of snow. Trudge over to the edge of the roof. Be careful not to slip and fall. Drop the snow onto the ground below. Repeat over and over again. It was impossible to even think about anything else. When she felt a gentle hand on her shoulder as she braced herself to scoop up another load of snow, all she could do was look up and blink at the form in front of her in dazed confusion. It was the woman who was in charge of the effort to get the snow off of the library roof. Ryl'ryn stood beside her, looking worried.

"You've done enough. Go home and rest before you fall off the roof."

Ari'sora blinked at the woman again. She wanted to protest that she could do more, but she realized that the woman was right. She was already unsteady on her feet after the amount of work she had done, and if she continued there was a real chance that she really would fall off of the roof. While she hesitated, the woman gently plucked the shovel out of her hand.

"Go home and rest she said again, leaving no room for protest.

Ari'sora gave the woman a weak smile, and nodded. She and Ryl'ryn flew down to the ground. Then they found Mi'zuri, gathered the kids up, and made their way home.

How you manage to keep all the names straight and not mix them up is an amazing task in and of itself. But this was an enjoyable read, helping to save knowledge and whatnot (and get a healthy work out too). The impromptu daycare was a nice touch, and I noticed that throughout the thread, you wrote with a very realistic tone, not forgetting things others might when it comes to the day to day concerns of a PC and not just the "highlight" moments. Well done, very down to earth and well written.
