Re: Rummaging around, down below.....

As soon as Gennadiya healed Varlum up as best she could the Ithecal nodded. "We'll worry about the rest later" he said, glancing forward to the area around them as Vega asked Varlum to fill the hole and Vivian offered a way. It was potentially smart, but they needed to fight off the creatures while doing it. It would be hard. Right now, however, it was all they had. He could try and collapse the tunnel in, but that much was a lot riskier. What if it broke the walls? What if it worked but only temporarily? There was a lot of uncertainty, more than he was willing to gamble with. Then again, once the tunnel was closed they could focus on something more.

As Varlum focused, his eyes began to turn blind, the mutation he first obtained coming through. With the loss of his sight, however, came a long-reaching tremor sense. It was easier than trying to see with the low light, but more important than that - it let him feel the tunnel and what was in it. Every small vibration became a sense for him, as if he knew exactly what it was and where. How big, how heavy. "Hold off any creatures, I'll worry about the tunnel" the Ithecal shouted, his now blind eyes apparent for any that took notice. Yet he ran forward despite it, avoiding collision with anyone else as he stood at the mouth of the hole, feeling what he feared.

More creatures.

With no time left to lose the Ithecal reached into his Defiance spark, calling to all the small stones around him in the underground. It wouldn't be enough. No matter what happened, he had to make sure he closed this off long enough. With a loud roar to the creatures, hoping to slow them down, the Earth began to shake. All the rocks he could feel came at him as fast as he could make them, forming a pile in front of him as he took chunks off the hole along with them. His head began to ache a little but he knew he couldn't risk stopping. Using his spark, he felt the rocks rise and form as much of a wall as they could, his grip on them shaking as one creature in the tunnel started to slam into the makeshift wall before he had even solidified it, only Varlum's defiance keeping it intact.

Once he had the rocks in place he reached for Fire, forming it in his mouth as he kept hold of the wall with all the power his Spark could muster. Finally, the flames burst forward, attempting to melt the stone enough that it would keep the creatures in. "This should keep them back, finish off any that are left" he shouted, finally letting go of his grasp as he felt the wall was sturdy enough, his eyesight beginning to come back as he paused for a breath.

The creatures kept coming. Genna felt a bid of panic as she saw more of the ugly brutes coming at them from another direction. In the blink of an eye she took a quick breath and opened her still glowing hand and directed the light towards the incoming creatures. She wasn’t stupid and didn’t try to directly attack these creatures. She had three very skilled fighters with her and she was meant to support and help them.

Still she held her warfan in one hand while with the other she opened and closed her hand to blind attacking creatures. She stayed on her toes and moved behind the fighters as they continued to attack the creatures around them. Especially as Varlum moved forward to close the hole. Genna would extend her hand and open the palm allowing the eyes of the monster to take the full impact of the light and then it was gone before it could get used to it and leaving it with the little fireworks in its gaze.

As Genna moved she found the behavior of these creatures a bit odd. They weren’t behaving like individual creatures but more like a swarm. The damage they were doing would normally have caused creatures to give pause, they kept coming, just like ants when you attacked there den. Genna wasn’t much of an animal phycologist, but there were certain behaviors that careered over. The young healer kept moving with her light while the swords twirled around. She also made sure not to be around when some of those complicated moves took place.

It was then that a creature slipped by. It was confused and wounded, but dangerous. Genna dived to the side even as it charged where she had been. Not waiting Genna struck out with her fan at the creatures eyes. Unless the thing was very different from animals the eye was the fastest way to the brain. It went into the creatures eyes, and Genna shoved harder and felt the resistance give way. Then she had to dance out of the way as the creature didn’t die quickly and with its claws began to thrash around. Genna felt it strike her shin and nearly tripped her.

Genna back away and cursed that she had left her fan in the creatures eye. She looked down at her foot and saw her boot was damaged but had protected her against damaged. Once the creature had died Genna put on a brave face and retrieved her fan.

Turning around she heard Varlum say he had sealed the tunnel. The Lysorian woman bit back the desire to throw up and faced the others and spoke. “Does anyone else feel like these things are behaving like a hive or a pack defending its home. The point being I wonder if maybe there might be an alpha of some sort.” She asked when there was time. “Its just most creatures have some sense of self preservation, and I suspect that someone Varlum size would normally be avoided even if you have a group.” Genna found she had to talk to keep her focus.

Comments: I love monster fighting threads, so the warning definitely attracted my attention. I found it interesting that Vega’s and Vivian’s templates in this thread looked so similar, and then I realized that they are both Mortalborns of Faldrun. They are sisters!

I appreciate that they kept an eye on Gennadiya as she had the least battle experience among them.

I didn’t realize that Blessed of Xiur can see in the dark. That’s definitely a useful ability to have when you are somewhere down below!

I loved the exclamation that Vega made (“Tio’s tiny todger!) when the creatures suddenly showed up. Her comments are always very entertaining to read!

I wasn’t aware that Vivian was a mage, so that was interesting to find out. Her fighting style is indeed quite different from Vega’s. I have to say, the three Mortalborns of Faldrun make an excellent team. When Varlum erupted into flames, it was an amazing scene!

I also liked how Vega hit one of the creatures – and it immediately fell over. That made me laugh!

I’m glad that Gennadiya got the opportunity to help as well, fight a wounded creature and heal Varlum. Her various blessing abilities definitely came in handy, and I think that a war fan is a rather unique weapon!

All in all, I really enjoyed the fight, and I liked how the four of you worked together!

Enjoy your rewards!

P.S.: Gennadiya, I would have added “Discipline” to the list of skills used as your PC didn’t allow herself to get distracted, for example. For Vega, “Endurance” might have applied when one of the creatures crashed against her leg, and she let out a yelp, and she also used her sword. For Varlum, “Defiance” should have been on the list of skills used. And Vivian used “Hone” in her first post.

P.P.S.: Varlum and Vivian, you didn’t state your skill levels. Vivian, you requested 9 knowledges. You made three posts and can only get 8. I awarded you two "Shield" Knowledges instead of three. Let me know, if you want me to change that, please!
