Stone and Fire (Vega)

5th Cylus, 720

"Easy lads, don't break something. Take it slow" Varlum said, helping a small group move supplies. While the Ithecal wasn't one to show off, he also had to ensure they got this done as quickly as possible, leading Varlum to carry much more in bulk than the others could. Partially, it was his size, but the other part was the training he had been doing. Most of his days had become dedicated to training his body and mind to be as strong as they could be for the next Ellasin to show up and try and start the next war. There would be one, there always was. Someone always wanted to be the best. It was just their nature. He had to be ready, to make sure that they were outmatched in every way. That was the only way to make sure he was ready.

As the group finished moving supplies, Varlum gave one a reassuring pat on the back and told them to take some rest, nodding to the group as they went on their way with some laughter. Odds are, that'd be their work for the next few breaks. But not for Varlum, not yet. This place had to be in the best condition it could be in. Yet as he glanced around for work to do, he saw a familiar face - and heard a familiar voice. Vega wasn't someone he'd spent much time talking to or interacting with, though nobody bar the other Knights or Wardens had been. He was busy at work, this wasn't the place to talk and socialise. Not unless you talked with a tool in hand and a long job ahead of you. Sitting by idly helped nobody.

As nobody seemed in urgent need of help, however, the Ithecal could take at least somewhat of a break.

"You've got a hell of a voice on you" the Ithecal said, giving a small but friendly nod as he sat down on a log that was far too short for him to be comfortable on. "The Lightning Knights have commanders who can't get their men to work as hard as you managed to make the builders yesterday" he chucked a little, offering his hand with the light conversation. "Varlum. We both seemed a little busy fighting whatever the fuck those things were yesterday, so figured I''d save the introductions for later."

After he made introductions, assuming they were well received, the Ithecal waited for her to respond. Otherwise, he would get on with his day as he had been prior.

Meeting mah bro.......
They needed supplies.

Vega knew this and she also knew that her Arlo could do wonders with very little in terms of ingredients - but still, he needed to know just what he had. Then, they could spare a few people and a little time to go hunting. But in order to maximise what they did there, this needed to be done first. So, she'd asked one of the Lightning Knights if she could do that - just to inventory the supplies. He'd given her five people to do it, and they'd worked for a few breaks now. There was not enough food, and they needed to get some of the wells repaired. There was no doubting it.

So, once they had an idea of what they had, she was planning on going out hunting, get people scavenging, foraging, everything they damn well could. She and Arlo could do that, well, but there were a lot of people here and they needed to make sure that everyone was fed. Vega, at that moment, was sitting on a pile of wooden crates, and being bossy. "RIgh', so you lot go an' get ahold of every vegetable an' herb from the garden what you can. The young ones who are old enough to do it, but not old enough to be fightin' get them in groups of four, an' each group gets an adult guide, or I'm gonna be tetchy, an' they go collectin' mushrooms. An' they do it quick, no lollygaggin' about." She looked down at the list in her hand and Vega slowly read what was there. She wasn't a quick reader, never would be.

"An' it says here that there's people what are good at makin' traps? Then get them on it. We need that." She glanced up as the last of her jobs to be done was crossed off her list and she saw a bloody big ithecal. Now, in fairness, she knew that Ithecal tended to be on the large size, but this one was taking it all just too far. She grinned. "Wotcha," Vega said with a friendly expression. She had seen him around - he was hard to miss - and she gave a grin to him. "Heya, " she grinned at him when he said she had a hell of a voice. "You wait till you see dancin'," she said with a chuckle. "I'm Vega. Vega Lei'nox." She held out her hand and grinned. "Yeah, I'm just a gob on a pair o'legs mostly. An' you're two people size? You what happens when a giant an' an Ithecal love each other very much?"

The hand she held out was warm - like she was running a temperature, and she saw that
noticed it
and grinned. "Cursed by Faldrun, always over'heatin'" she said, moving her shoulder slightly so that her dress revealed the burnt, crispy skin in the shape of a hand print. She didn't seem at all concerned by it, in fact her grin had an element of pride to it. Vega had, as always, her sword, her bow, and her fiddle with her. She looked at him and said. "So, next on my list is gonna be actually organisin' some huntin' an' foragin' and stuff. You any good at that? I tell you what, actually," she looked at him and, rather like he was a piece of meat, she poked him in the arm. "there's a store room what collapsed, an' there's jus' too much in the way for us to move. But yer a big strong fella, an' I'm tougher than I look," she understated, somewhat.

"Shall we go see if we can rescue some stuff?"

"Pleasure to meet you" he smiled before failing to hide a chuckle when she asked if he was what happened when a giant and an Ithecal were in love, shaking his head. "Not last I checked, my parents always seemed pretty normal size. Giant to me, but that happens when you're young" he admitted, barely remembering his father - or at least the father he thought was his. He hadn't thought to ask how Faldrun and his mother had created him, if it had been some kind of an affair or a curse on their family.

When he shook her hand the Ithecal felt the heat, despite his scales being made of stone. Before he could ask if she was alright, however, she grinned about a curse of Faldrun. For a moment, Varlum wasn't sure what to say to that. He was sorry she had to suffer for it, but she didn't seem sorry for it at all. Whatever she had done to Faldrun must have been something she had no regrets for. "Guess that's something else we have in common. You're cursed with overheating, he cursed me with being his son and told the city about it. As if the Knights would fire me on the spot" he said with a small chuckle, glancing to the woman. She didn't seem like the kind that would be scared of Faldrun's son, even if he was clearly hostile, so he doubted she'd be scared of him now. "Why'd he curse you?"

At first, at the idea of hunting and foraging, Varlum felt a little bit of dread. He didn't have the stealth to hunt animals, and axes weren't great for the job either. Once Vega mentioned going through a collapsed store room, however, Varlum gave a grin. "Sounds more like my kind of task, let's do it" he nodded, standing himself up and giving a small stretch. "Careful by the way, that's real stone you poked. Wouldn't want a nail to break" he teased, the woman clearly not the kind to care if a nail, or maybe even an arm, got broken. She seemed like the kind he could poke fun at without any issues, more than could be said for some of the soldiers he worked with. They'd become knights for the fancy shining armour, not for the work that went into it.

As soon as she showed him the storehouse the Ithecal got to work moving the rubble aside, noticing that Vega had been far from exaggerating when she spoke of her own strength. Looked like Varlum wasn't the strongest one in the camp for a change. "So what brings you here? Never seen you as a Knight or with the Wardens before, you just came to volunteer or are you with the Priestesses?" he asked, keeping his work up to pace as he talked, putting his back into clearing the rubble to one side so that they could find whatever had been buried underneath it.

Meeting mah bro.......
It was rare, as Arlo could attest if he was here, that Vega Lei'nox was speechless. In fact, it was beyond rare and into almost-legendary. Yet, for just a second or so, speechless was exactly what she was as the big stone-skinned lizard-bloke replied to her. It was a few moments after he'd asked it that she answered just why Faldrun had cursed her. "He cursed me when he came to see me, an' told me how he'd forced himself on my mother, an' that it were because I'm his daughter that she died in birthin' me," Vega glanced at Varlum, her eyes swirling white and orange as she did. "I mean. Well, that's not why he cursed me, actually," she admitted then, quietly but with a stubborn set to her jaw. "He cursed me cos, when he told me that I punched him in his stupid mouth." Looking at Varlum she gave the slightest of shrugs. "I mean. No disrespect to you an' all, but I'm not happy about bein' his daughter, so you'll excuse me if I'm not cheerin' the family ties."

Vega grinned, just a little, as he spoke about real stone and her not breaking a nail. "I were checkin', just tryin' to be subtle." Not a tactic she utilised often, Vega had to admit. Yet, there it was. Not quite sure how to deal with all this sudden influx of 'this is my brother, sired by the same Immortal who forced himself on my mother and who I hate', Vega decided that she wasn't going to deal with it, just let it sit there for a while and chunter in her subconscious. It would sort itself out, she knew, and there was no point poking at it.

They started to move rubble and things, and Vega identified a single place where it could be piled up in order to make it accessible for rebuilding purposes, and also at the same time to not just move rubbish from one pile of rubbish to the next. Her muscles strained as she lifted, but the woman worked hard and was, in fairness, incredibly strong. She let out a sort of half-laugh half-grumble at his next question, though. "My 'usband were born an' bred here. So, first time we came here it were to meet his folks," Vega said. "an' o'course, we got into trouble straight off. Worked with the Lightning Knights a few times, there were these attacks on Mistral Village, an' we helped out there an' we were involved in the whole thing with the Knights and Priestesses findin' out there were traitors in the middle of them. That was not pleasant. Urm, oh, yeah, an' I met Lovalus, an' the Heartmourn, over on Isle Vyrelle, or whatever it's called. Yeah. Rharne's important to me. To us." She looked at Varlum as they worked, clearing away stones. "I reckon, at least some of the boxes an' stuff are gonna be salvageable, you know," Vega said.

"I'm joinin' the Thunder Priestesses, as part o' the warrior branch. Field commission stuff, here, will do it more formal when we've dealt with this. But, I've never 'eard of the Wardens," she said, carefully checking that they were doing this in such a way that they weren't about to have more things falling on them, or buildings collapsing on their heads. "What're they, then?"

How many siblings did Varlum have in Rharne?

When Vega explained the story of how she had punched Faldrun, there was a moment of silence before the Ithecal finally spoke up. "If I ever see him, I might just have to do the same" he said with a small nod, apologetic look in his eyes at what had happened to her mother. "And no disrespect taken. I'd rather have no ties by blood to any of his children if it meant none of us had ties to a bastard like that."

As Varlum moved rocks to the pile that meant it was out the way, he listened as she spoke of her husband and their time here. It sounded as busy, perhaps busier, than his had been. "Sounds like the two of you have done a hell of a lot for this place" he nodded, figuring now was the time he talked of his own achievements. "I was a part of the first expedition to kill a Flameborn, one of the few who fought Ellasin face to face and a Knight on the side. Not quite as much, but I treasure Rharne too. More than I ever expected to when I moved here."

Quietly, the Ithecal took a step back as Vega surveyed the area to prevent them collapsing any more of this place on top of their supplies. Then she asked about the Wardens, his eyes glancing to her with a small amount of confusion. "Lovalus, you said you'd met them - the Spirit? When I killed the first Flameborn I was chosen, me and two others, to go to the Lake. When we got there we met some Spirits and were told by Lovalus that we were the first Wardens" he explained as Ivarn, a deep blue draconic Diri, wrapped around his arm for the woman to see. "We're sworn to protect purity, keep the land safe from bastards like Faldrun. Even if it goes against laws and regulations. I was one of the first, now one of the higher ranking. Suppose defeating someone like Ellasin on Rharnian soil would earn a promotion or two, though."

He gave a small smile to Vega. "If what you say is true, what you and your husband have done for Rharne, I'd be happy to take you there one day. Either, or both, of you. I can bring you into the Wardens now. Just let me know, I'm not a hard man to find" he said with a slight nod. He'd heard of all that had happened in Rharne, with the traitors in the ranks and the attacks at Mistral Village. It wasn't common knowledge, nor was it something that someone could keep up for long as a lie. Besides, Lovalus would know if their hearts were true. What was the harm in offering?

"And if you ever need someone to join you as a priestess, I'd be happy to accompany you as a Knight. Never one to turn down an interesting day" he chuckled, getting back to work once she gave the green light.

Meeting mah bro.......
Vega had to admit, she liked Varlum. He was a little bit aggro, a lot no-nonsense and - as much as she was loathe to even think it (and was certainly nowhere near saying it) - he reminded her of one of her favourite people. Herself. This whole mortalborn of Faldrun rubbish had some perks, she had to admit (though few and far between) and there was a hulking great lizard-shaped giant one. Who knew?

He said they'd done a lot for Rharne and Vega grinned a toothy grin (although, of course, toothy is relative) - and shrugged. "Well, they gave us
this
" She held her hand out, showing him the ring. "Arlo's got one the same." Vega had never used it, had always thought that it was unnecessary and, frankly, a little rude to do so. But still, she figured, it was a nice gesture and she didn't mind it one bit.

She nodded in confirmation, "Yeah, we met Lovalus. There was a thing on Isle Vyrelle, an' there was a Heartmourne trapped in the shape of a big tree-fella, an' a little girl constantly jus' turnin' fellas into weasels, an' trapped them down a well, where they drowned. We persuaded her it wasn't the best idea, an' she moved on. Arlo still thumps one leg if you scratch him.... " realising that she was doing it again Vega stopped herself. "Anyhow. Yeah. We met Lovalus. She were nice enough. In an entirely alien sort of way. When she looked at me, I felt right calm." She had, very much so. It had been quite the astonishing impact on the young woman.

And then, of all things, he offered for her - for them to be initiated into the Wardens. Vega looked at him and thought about it for a moment. "I'd like that, so long as Lovalus gets to choose. She migh' a' thought I were a right numpty, after all." Never one to put herself where she wasn't supposed to be, not her. So, Vega looked at Varlum and grinned."That sounds great an' as much as I can't say I'm glad yer my brother, cos that involves all sorts of thinkin' what I don't wanna be doin', I'm right glad to have met ya. And ha!" She looked at him as he offered to be the Lightning Knight who accompanied her. "Try an' protect me, sunshine, an' I'll turn you into a handbag what looks like stone. Jog on, Junior."

And thus, Varlum's new name was created.

Re: Stone and Fire (Vega)

5th Cylus, 720
As soon as Vega showed the ring to Varlum, his eyes glanced from it to her. "Well, that's pretty definitive, huh?" he said with a small chuckle, nodding to her. "Looks like you two have been busy to land a ring like that, I've never seen one in person before. Not that I can recall" he said with a small smile towards Vega. She was a nice woman, even if she was loud - and very much proud of it. That was part of what made her welcoming to the Ithecal. Everyone in Rharne seemed to shy away from the people that were louder and boisterous. Most of them wouldn't last long in Ivorian.

As Vega explained the story the Ithecal gave a small chuckle, not one to doubt it for a moment. He'd seen enough weird shit in Rharne to believe it all. Once she was done he gave a small nod to her. "Lovalus wouldn't accept you if you weren't right for it. If I try and initiate you, and it works, then Lovalus has already made her choice" he said with a grin. When she laughed and called him Junior, Varlum couldn't hold back his own laughter. "Who said anything about protecting? Maybe I'm the one who wants a bodyguard for a change? Ithecal need breaks too" he teased, enjoying the threat of being turned to a handbag. It was definitely a new one.

"Well, whenever you or your husband decide what you want to do, let me know. I'll be around, and I imagine I'm the only stone Ithecal you'll see wandering the streets. Though nothing would surprise me in this city" he laughed, making sure to keep the flow of work going as he did. "I only just ended up back in Rharne from a long trip. Some Knight work or Warden things would be a welcome break. I've fought enough wars and sailed enough seas for one lifetime. If I were meant to sail or swim, I'd have been born a Mer or Biqaj" he explained, severely under-exaggerating the trip to the barrier. Then again, it wasn't a story he planned on telling. Not to anyone. That was Padraig's discovery, and all Varlum wanted answers to was the one question - what ties did he have to the Dragons?

"You think we've moved enough rubble? Might be worth getting some people to help us organise all these supplies."

First with just a small clerical note, in the future Varlum, please include your skill competencies alongside your skills used.

Secondly, what a nice, warm family surprise party. I'm not at all surprised to see the pair of Faldrunborn hitting it off together, and not solely over their hatred of him. And of course Vega would like someone who is much like herself. A nice social thread while also doing some good, honest work.

Thirdly, Junior is a good nickname for Big Guy.
