Fish Out of Water Pt. I

It was her first class outside of the university, a "field trip" that began on the green sands of Scalvoris Town where Professor Carter stood before a small group of students and spoke confidently:

"Some of you may have grown up on this island, but for those of you who haven't," he pushed upon his spectacles, motioning behind him where the ocean waited. Floating in its waters was a small ship which Yeva later learned was called a ketch, a common sight around coast, "Almund is a town of historical significance, but that history has not always been a peaceful one. While we are there, I want you to keep your wits about you and stay together. Remember that we are going with a purpose and the trip will be somewhat lengthy. We should arrive sometime before dusk, which will suit our needs well."

In the water where the anchored boat waited, a man dressed in black dropped into the sea and began to swam inland. Professor Carter continued to speak, but she caught herself glancing back at the sailor. She watched him beneath the surface and re-emerge closer, rising when it was shallow enough to stand and trudged upon the shore. With hair as black as pitch and ears that protruded sharply like horns, the swirling eyes of the Biqaj eyed them up and down while stationing himself beside the professor. The water clung to him, as well as his clothes. He stood with a broad and arrogant stance, bare feet planted firmly, inviting all to remember his face.

That, however, wasn't the most... memorable detail. Where his clothes stuck to his skin, Yeva could see the outline of his form; the lithe strength of a sailor's body and the impressive manhood outlined between his legs. Her eyes snapped upwards to find vibrant eyes that knew. He was grinning, one of his incisors made of black metal and Yeva felt an elbow nudge against her ribs.

Her classmate glanced over, "Say your name."

Everyone watched her expectantly; even Dr. Carter who has crossed his arms in expectation. She felt her face flame, "Y-Yeva,"

The introductions continued and she had to look away, wondering if everyone else had noticed where her attention lingered. The Biqaj was still smiling.

"The University has arranged for us to have an escort, which will allow us to expedite our travels by trials. Mr. Ash here has been courteous enough to give us passage along the coast. While we are on the water, I want you all to listen to his charge and listen well, for your own safety.... Is there anything else you'd like to add before we go?"

The Biqaj's voice was smooth and deep, a cool drink on a spring day, "Name's Caelin; Caelin Ash," he scanned the group, "Let's hope you land lovers can swim."

'Swim?'

Yeva looked up, hand raising, "I'm sorry? I thought we were sailing?"

Caelin snorted, "And how'd ya think that's gonna happen, love?"

Professor Carter clarified with more understanding, "What Mr. Ash means, is that the waters are too shallow to bring the ship any closer or else it risks getting marooned. As such, the group will go out as far as we can, where we will assist those who may need help in the water. There is no need to fret."

The words were supposed to be comforting, but when only two of six students raised their hands, Caelin prowled behind her, "Well, Miss Yeva," he leaned forward as the others began tugging off boots and bags, hands drawing her cloak from her arms. The medic didn't know what to say. She could hear the smile in his voice when he looked down at the white blouse that covered her breasts, "Are you ready to get wet?"

She wouldn't let him get in her head. She ignored him and pulled away from the outerwear, bending over to unlace her shoes which made the man chuckle under his breath, "Alright, Sunspot, I'll come back for you." Caelin threw her cloak over his shoulder and took her bag, along with the others and made trips to his ship. Despite the added weight with each round, he tossed the belongings on the deck and swam so naturally, one might mistake him for a Mer. The students who could swim began making their way in the water, leaving Yeva and another; a man with blonde hair and a habit of forgetting his books at home, lingering on the shore.

The blonde was a fitful mess, stuttering over his words in vehemence, "I-I-I really can't, Professor, I can't swim. I'll drown!"

John Carter was doing his best to calm the man down and Yeva's stomach dropped, realizing who would be going with her.

"C'mon, Sunspot. Water's warm."

With a grim expression and dragging feet, Yeva slowly made her way towards the captain who was already chest deep and waiting.

She trudged forward, pushing through the resistance of the climbing tide. The further she went, the more anxious she felt, not because of the teasing and maddening sailor who was now treading water, but the doubt of ability clenching her insides, "C-Caelin," the sea floor fell away beneath her feet and she gasped for air, dropping like a stone, hands wildly grabbing at the water. Salt invaded her mouth and she tried to spit it out, her hair tangled around her neck , and suddenly it felt as if she was suspended in nothingness and the redhead panicked. 'Bad idea! Bad idea!'

Strong hands scooped her up and drew her against his chest. She didn't care about his comments, she clung to him and took great breaths, focused on keeping her head above water, "Alright, lass, I got ya, Kick your feet, you're fine."

"I don't like this,"

"Relax," behind him, some of the others were watching, "Now move your arms." He took her wrist and began to pry her away from him.

"No! No, wait, Caelin, wait!" she tried to fight him, but his face had taken on a serious expression and he denied her.

"Listen to me," Yeva was reminded of her professor's instruction and she tried to calm down. She had to breathe. He watched her closely, his eyes now lime and ginger orange, "Move your arms back and forth. Keep kicking."

She tried to nod and threw her limbs around in the water. He nodded and he began to guide them further out, Yeva swimming, but just barely. 'I'm doing it' Yeva looked beyond to the ship and the rope that hung over its railing. 'Almost there!'

She pushed herself harder and her body felt lighter. Fully separated, she spat out salt water and kept going, pulling herself back up her head started to dip again.

"Good," Caelin praised, voice sharpening in recognition, "Good!"

He reached back and grabbed the edge of the rope, floating on the top of the water. Yeva reached for him and he pressed the life line in her fingers and she sputtered a disbelieving laugh.

Some of her classmates above them applauded. Caelin grinned, pulling Yeva the rest of the way towards him, "Lass..." he looked past her at the shore where Professor Carter had finally managed to convince her classmate to enter the water, "I think you've just learned how to swim."

While relieved it was over, Yeva was tired and struggled to climb the rope. Caelin grabbed her hips in self-proclaimed effort of giving her a boost but now that the immediate threat of drowning had passed, she swatted his hands away. He might have been helpful in the water, but the young woman doubted he was as trustworthy out of it. A Scalvoran scoundrel.

She had to grit her teeth to pull higher. Without handholds or knots, she struggled but eventually and with the help of those on board, she threw her leg over the railing and sunk against the deck. Following, she could hear the biqaj's feet against the vessel and felt the change in weight rock the boat. And somewhere in the water, she heard the desperation of the professor and pupil.

Yeva didn't care. She laid out on the deck and enjoyed the sunshine that brushed her skin. On her back, her eyes closed as shadows shifted somewhere at her side.

"Um, Yeva?"

"Hm?" she cracked open and eye and propped herself up on her elbows.

The same girl who had nudged her on the beach was trying to find the words. Everyone had made it on board, maybe it was ready to sail off. Another student giggled. Carter turned to look and his eyes widened from behind his glasses. Caelin stood to her right, dripping wet as he wound the rope across his arm. He was smiling again.

Her voice tightened, "What's wrong?"

"Not a damn thing from where I'm standing," Caelin finished tying the rope but his eyes didn't leave her, "View's nice."

"Yeva," Carter had rushed across the deck to grab her clock from the pile of belongings, holding it out with his gaze everywhere but her. He looked flushed, "Your..."

Caelin cut in, "Nice piercings, Sunspot. Looks like you're more adventurous than I gave you credit for."

Pier...cings?

Yeva looked down in slow motion. Her white shirt was now transparent, outlining every detail of her breasts and the blush nipples bound in silver jewelry. A look of pure horror struck her face and she snatched the green cloak and jumped to her feet. Everyone had seen... Everything!!! Tears began to spring to her eyes and she didn't know where to look or what to say and there was no where to go. Caelin was laughing and Carter spun on his heel, snapping:

"Mr. Ash! I would appreciate if you stopped tormenting my students and remained a professional!"

Caelin rolled his eyes and drew anchor, although there was a mocking in his voice, "Of course, of course. Anything for the University." The Biqaj unveiled dark sails, "Next stop: Almund."

Comments: Haha! This was a great thread! I loved it!

The NPCs were interesting, and the dialogue was well-written. I especially liked Caelin!

Judging by how fast Yeva learned to swim, she’s a natural!

When I reached the part where Caelin commented on her piercings I couldn’t help but smirk a little. Poor Yeva though! I hope that she forgets this embarrassing incident again quickly, and people won't tease her too much!!

Enjoy your rewards!

The bearer seems to age more slowly, though the effect is superficial rather than biological.
