Mortal intent, Immortal power, and the bridge between the two; and so, all things become possible.
The words were like a manta in the back of Tio's head, a whisper that he always remembered whenever his thoughts turned to his dream of transcending humanity. Vri had said those words moments before doing something impossible, something that had changed Tio's perspective forever. With those three ingredients he had taken the departed soul of Auya Trueheart and forged her into something far greater. That day Tio had watched in awe as Auya returned to the world as a god, and as he beheld that glorious a single thought had crossed his mind.
If she could do it, so could he.
Of course as any good chef could attest, there was a big difference between knowing what the ingredients were and knowing the recipe. Mortals, Immortals and Mortalborn had surely all interacted in some capacity together in the past, and yet those encounters didn't just spawn fresh little godlings out from nothing. There must be a technique to it, a process, and figuring it out was the key to attaining godhood. Tio had half a hypothesis on what that was. From his own experience providing the mortal intent in Auya's ascension he believed that the mortal in the equation needed only to provide the force of will, the mental drive, to guide the process. From that he assumed that the Immortal just needed to supply the raw energy to power the process, the fuel for the fire so to speak. What stumped him however was what role the Mortalborn was supposed to play. What exactly did they do to serve as the bridge? Did the Immortal power need to funnel through them into the mortal like some kind of divine sieve? Did they provide some sort of template for turning the mortal body into an immortal one? He could speculate all he wanted, but the simple fact of the matter was that there was no way to know for sure what a mortalborn actually did without experimenting on one.
The old Tio hadn't been prepared to experiment on another living being like that. The idea of running potentially life-threatening tests on people like Kura or Nir'wei filled him with revulsion. But Tasha's betrayal had taught him that you couldn't find a diamond without digging through the muck, and the new Tio had hardened his heart to such cruel acts. If he had to reach for the stars by standing atop of pile of corpses then so be it. With this new mindset he had begun to spread word out across the criminal underworld that he was looking for a mortalborn, and it hadn't been long before word got back to him. In Uthaldria there was a Lotharro the locals believed to be a son of Thetros; a terrifying legend who was said to have been raised among them until he betrayed his fellow hunters, devastated his old home in a jealous rage, and apparently now ruled over the monsters in Northern Gauthrel like a mad king. His existence was no secret simply because this man, Icarus Iskariot, had no need for subtlety. He was powerful, a master of the abilities granted to him by birthright, and had no qualms about using them for violence. He would be the perfect test subject...
As long as he could capture him.
"This is a'far as I go." Alfwun, a Lotharro huntsman, grumbled under his breath. While normally a brave, boisterous man, it was easy to notice how quiet and wary he'd become the second they crossed into Icarus' territory. Tio found he couldn't blame him. There was a malice that clung to the air in these parts like fog, prickling the hairs on the back of his neck and warning him that unseen eyes were upon him. "The lord of monsters lives directly north from here. Dunno what business you have with him, but I'll warn ya again to leave well enough alone. He may look like a man, but beneath 'is skin Icarus is as much a monster as his pets."
"I'm counting on it."Tio replied, taking the pouch of nel he'd promised Alfwun in exchange for his guidance here and tossing it over to him. Expecting that he'd be in for a fight, Tio had donned his Darbyton Derby Champion armour and had his sword Neverweather, his combat knife Frostbite and a pistol crossbow strapped to his waist. Throwing knives and smoke bombs were packed into concealed pouches across his person, and around his back he had a coil of rope and his domain bag, in case he had use for his assortment of kits, bombs or thralls. His ring, Thieve's Accomplice, and his Metal Morph in ring form were wrapped comfortably around his right middle finger, and on a chain around his neck tucked beneath his armour he wore an assortment of magical oddities: Delroth's Charm, the Luminescent Tear, a twig of Arrowroot and The Emerald Store.
Alfwun grunted an acknowledgement and turned to leave, hurrying out of the area with the haste of someone trying not to show how scared they were. When he had gone Tio dug down into his soul and called upon his attunement spark, feeding it a trickle of ether and feeling it hum to life inside his chest. He cast out his awareness in the direction of Icarus' lair, searching for that rare note he'd detected only twice before.
It wasn't long before he found it. There, a little while away, was the note of a mortalborn. He locked on to the frequency, frowning at the other notes he detected coming off of Icarus: jealousy, violence and malice. So much malice.
"Time to get to work." He muttered to himself, pulling the piece of Arrowroot up to his mouth and taking a bite. The vile taste filled his mouth but he forced back the urge to spit it out and instead swallowed it down. The shadows around him seemed to cling a little tighter to his body, and feeling that it was working Tio set of at a quick jog in the direction of Icarus, keeping his Omnivision spread out in all directions around him. He had no doubt that Icarus would have monsters patrolling his territory, and he figured that his best bet was to simply avoid them altogether. Flying would leave him too exposed to winged monsters, but by staying on land he could take cover behind the trees and rocks scattered about the place. With the Arrow Root and Thieve's Accomplice supplementing his own stealth skills he was confident he could avoid detection, and Omnivision would allow him to watch out for danger ahead. For good measure he used his dreamwalking skill Cloaking; stepping into a plane of reality slightly askew from Idalos to hide himself from the perception of whatever might be watching him.
