Doctor Devin, Part 1

Vhalar 2, Arc 719

On the 2nd of Vhalar, Devin Thorn, thief, conman extraordinaire and priest of Delroth, walked into the Medicine House, dressed in an outfit that was much less flashy and colourful than what he usually wore, black pants, a white shirt and a thin white coat. There was no hat on his head either. He looked, to all intents and purposes, like a very nice and normal young man that didn’t have any ulterior motives, and he carried a black doctor’s case in his right hand.

Almost immediately after he had entered the foyer, gawking a bit because the architecture was quite different than what he was used to – he was in some sort of oversized treehouse, for Delroth’s sake! – a pretty young Sev’ryn nurse approached him, smiling at him as she did so. “Good trial, sir, and welcome to the Olọravu Slosneppe. What may I do for you? Do you need treatment?” she asked. “One of our medicine women will see you soon! Follow me to one of the treatment rooms, please!”

“No!”
Devin told her in no uncertain terms.

“What, no?” the nurse asked, a bit miffed.

“I won’t follow you to one of the treatment rooms”, Devin informed her. “I’m not a patient. I’m a doctor, and I’m here to apply for a job. I know all about that Northern Medicine business that you are so interested in.” He opened his doctor’s case and let her take a look at his tools that he’d stolen from a hospital before he’d left Scalvoris and that were an important part of his disguise.

“I can even do surgery”, he claimed.

“Oh …” the nurse made. “Oh … in that case, let me get one of the medicine women. They’ll be quite excited to hear that. We’ve been looking to expand our services to Northern Medicine for a while. Wait here, I’ll be right back!” she told him, and off she went.

Devin did of course not wait right here. Instead, he wandered around the foyer and inspected everything – because he was only applying for a job so that he would be able to rob those people more easily later on. He needed a lot of money, for himself and for Delroth!

Re: Doctor Devin, Part 1

About five bits passed before the nurse returned, one of the strangest women that Devin had ever seen in tow. She looked old, in fact she looked even older than Devin’s grandmother had been when she had died – and Devin’s grandmother had been at least seventy – or eighty or ninety. Her dark face was full of wrinkles. She had white hair, and she wore clothing that seemed to be made of animal hides and had lots and lots of beads on it.

She looked really scary – and kind of mad. Devin instantly made a step back.

“Tey’droa”, the nurse simply introduced the weird old madwoman and left. Devin watched her in panic. Why did she leave him? He didn’t want to be alone with that madwoman!

“Des’trill told me that you are a doctor and wish to work here”, the madwoman said. She spoke Common well, with only the hint of an accent. If he hadn’t been so busy being afraid of her, Devin would likely have been impressed. As it was, he was on the verge of a panic attack though.

“Y … yes”, he stammered and continued, a bit more confidently, because he couldn’t let his absolutely justified and reasonable fear get the better of him, “I studied Medicine and Surgery at the University of Rynmere, back before King Cassander ordered all mages to be burned at the stake. I heard that Desnind was looking for people skilled in conventional medicine, so here I am!”

"Doctor Hawthorne",
he introduced himself.

“So, so”, Tey’droa murmured. Devin had the feeling that she could see right through his lies – even though that was as good as impossible. He was one of the best liars in Idalos!

“Do you have any documents that prove that you studied at the University of Rynmere?” she wanted to know.

“No, ma’am”, Devin replied and put on the most pitiful and apologetic facial expression that he was capable of. “My family and I had to leave the kingdom in quite a hurry, and we weren’t able to take anything with us. Most of my relatives are mages, you see!”

“Hrmmm”,
Tey’droa grumbled. She was obviously not happy with what she had heard “Well, come with me. Let’s take a look at a patient together so that I can find out how much you know!”

“What?”
she said, noticing the look on Devin’s face. “Did you think I would let you loose on my patients without making sure that you really know something about medicine first?”

“I am just a bit disappointed that you doubt me, that’s all!”
Devin informed her in the most arrogant tone that he was capable of. An academically trained doctor from Rynmere would probably be slightly arrogant in a place that was full of what he likely perceived as savages.

“Well, I guess that you’ll be disappointed then”, Tey’dora remarked indifferently. “Follow me, Doctor Hawthorne. Unless you’ve changed your mind and don’t want the job after all?”

Re: Doctor Devin, Part 1

Devin followed the woman, of course. He still wanted to rob the Medicine House, and he was also worried about what she’d do if he ran. She might call the guards – or what they had instead of guards in this weird place! He’d been in prison once, and he didn’t want to go there again!

A young male Sev’ryn sat on the examination table and looked at Tey’droa and Devin somewhat uneasily. Devin could see that there was a noticeable bump on his right hand, near his wrist.

“This”, Tey’droa said and gestured towards Devin. “Is Doctor Hawthorne. He comes from Rynmere and wants to work here. He will take a look at you. I will be watching him.”

The man’s gaze abruptly shot to Devin, as if he didn’t trust him entirely, before he resigned himself to his fate and told him in heavily accented Common, “As you can see, I have this bump on my hand, doctor. It appeared quite suddenly, and it seems to be growing. I’m worried that I have cancer!”

His voice trembled a little as he said that.

Devin put his doctor’s case away, came closer – he should probably examine the patient, he realized - and peered at the bump before he bent over it and prodded it with a finger. It felt really weird, and it was pliable. He found himself agreeing with the man’s self-diagnosis. It was most likely cancer - hand cancer!

He remembered that one of the women in the street where he had grown up had had a bump as well – on one of her breasts – and a few seasons later she’d died. Bumps were dangerous!

“Is there anything you can do, doctor?” the patient asked. Devin started to panic again. He had no idea whether there was any kind of treatment for hand cancer – most of his medical knowledge came from getting hurt a lot and not from medical school. He looked at Tey’droa who stood there, arms crossed over her chest, scrutinizing him and gulped.

If he admitted that he didn’t know what he was supposed to do, she’d throw him out, and then he wouldn’t be able to steal any of the fun drugs and the money they had in this place. She probably wouldn’t like him telling the patient that there was no hope and he’d be dead soon either though.

So, he gritted his teeth and lied, “I can try to remove the bump. It might hurt a little though!”

“That’s okay”,
the patient said.

Devin clenched his fist and advanced – hitting the bump might flatten it – but then he had a better idea. He removed a thick book on human anatomy from his doctor’s case and struck the bump with it.

The man grimaced a bit, and then he looked at his wrist and smiled. “It’s already much better. Thank you, doctor”, he said, and Devin grinned at him because he quite liked being thanked.

A moment later, Tey’droa approached them. “There’s a small chance of the ganglion cyst coming back”, she informed the patient. “If that happens, you should come to us again.”

Having said that, she gestured for Devin to follow her. Once they had left the treatment room, she leaned over to him and whispered, “You should always tell the patient their diagnosis, Doctor Hawthorne. That poor man probably kept wondering if he had cancer the entire time.”

“I was nervous”,
Devin lied, resisting the urge to scratch his neck. Since his adventure in Viden the arc before, he had a weird rash that recurred at the most inopportune of moments.

“It won’t happen again!” he added, wisely keeping the fact that he hadn’t known that the man had a ganglion cyst rather than an especially dangerous form of cancer to himself.

“Hrmmm”, Tey’droa grumbled. “You seem to be somewhat familiar with the treatment of ganglion cysts at least. One of my colleagues or I will regularly check up on your patients for the next ten-trial though. We need to make sure that you are doing a good job.”

“Does that mean …?”
Devin asked, and his eyes widened.

“You’re hired”, Tey’droa informed him. “For now”, she added.

The whole thing is very well-written comedy of errors. The overall toned you used was great and I found myself smiling the whole time I read, so now it's hard to decide if Devin needs to be caught or if you should write more of his shenanigans!
