What Happens at the Beer Festival

Fri Oct 25, 2019 10:52 pm

45th of Vhalar, 719

Rharne was bustling with activity as Beer Festival was beginning to take off. Beer from various parts of the lands around the mountain city had been brought into the lightning city in preparation for these trials. Not only beer but baked masterpieces, crafts of all sorts and entertainment of every kind had found its way onto the stepped street that ran from the gate, through the earth and glass quarters to the top of the mountain.

It was the time to celebrate bounty of the world and what better way to do that then with beer and good times. The main street was a hive of activity on this the first day of the festivities as merchants came in with hammer, nail and wood to set up their stalls. Some were quiet exotic and beautiful, set up and painted before the festivities even began and then brought in with wagon to take a place of honor. Others were literally assembled as the vendor set up the stall, a banner placed over the top of the stand advertising their wares.

No one got any peace and quiet that trial, as it started with sounds of building and slowly turned into the sounds of hackers selling their wares and the general buzz of conversation. The air soon also began to take on a color fragrance as the smell of baked good began to mix with the smell of sweaty people and animals.

Gennadiya stepped out from her new (to her) home and made her way towards the waiting festivities. The family clinic was closed for the evening so that all could participate in the festivities. The children were to be put to bed this evening, but on the next evening Gennadiya would with some others bring them to the festivities.

The young healer had taken her hair out of its containing braid so that now it fell down her back and around her face in curls and waves. The platinum blond coloring accented the pinks in the young woman’s skin tones. To more accent it Gennadiya was wearing a blue blouse with flared sleeves, and a blue skirt that was perfect for twirling in. Not that Adiya was curling at the moment. Instead she was walking quietly the road heading towards the main celebration. Her lips spread in a grin of anticipation for the evenings celebrations.

Tree Talk Xanthean Common

Flags whipped in colorful concert, each clashing against colors and themes from one booth of craft beer to another. The colors, the sounds, the people! It was quite a festive exprience and Oonah hadn't even tasted her first beer. Imagine, an entire event, as much a celebration as anything, about a beverage! The Tunawa shook her head in wonder at such a thing and to think kind, beautiful Gennadiya had tipped her in on this festive event. Fermented beverage was the last thing she would have expected when thinking about her fellow healer. The little Tunawa was really looking forward to seeing what the hubub was all about.

How should she pick her first experience? She'd looked for someone she knew but didn't see Genna, or Cail, or Varlum, or Faith and Paddyrags, or Zander and she didn't know if Qit would be interested - being a ghost and all. It was early so wait lines were relatively short. The longer line the better?

Some booths were so flashy that one couldn't help but be drawn to the manipulation but maybe there were hidden gems in the smaller, more modest establishments? And the beer names? Blessed Immortals how could one choose between conconctions called 'Barrel Burner' or 'Nut Smasher,' or 'Duck Duck Gooze' or 'Leafer Madness.' How did they come up with such names that had nothing to do with barley, hops and yeast?

Of course beer lovers might be visting their favorite local breweries but Oonah had never frequented any such establishments. Maybe if she chose a booth that she felt some kind of affinity for? Maybe a booth named after an animal? 'Blue Dog Beer Tavern?' She didn't care for dogs. The 'Surly Goat?' The 'Thirsty Crow?' Nope and nope.

There. There was one that caught her attention. Not ostentatious but more than modest. The bright gold of the banner sparkled in the sunlight, bringing a sense of celebration and maybe recommending quality. Really, it was as good a place to stop as any.

It took her a trill to climb a stool and longer to catch the attention of the bar tender with a waving hand swishing like a branch swaying in the breeze. "Please, most popular beer have you?"

The Mother handed off her child to Hork'alin, smiling calmly at him. In Xanthean, "She loves her uncle. She is a bit cranky today, I took away her snake. She was getting a bit rough with it. She's so strong." Hork took the child happily, looking relieved that the girl had no snakes on her. Small animals had become a common sight in their shared home, because the toddler had a habit of catching them and bringing them in to play with.

Caza was wriggling in his hands, forcing him to hold her really close, surprising him with just how much she could fight. She was not smiling, she wore a venomous scowl, and with one of her little hands, thumped Hork on the nose. The Mother saw the tears well up in his eyes as he fought down the pain, not crying out so as to not scare the little girl. "Might need to keep her away from Tunawa until she's old enough to understand. She might actually hurt them."

Tunawa.

Instantly the Mother was gone, instead, there was a woman who looked most like like Qit'ria at the time when she died. The Sister had arrived. Her mutations were there, her tattoos were there, and she was smiling. She nodded at Hork. "I'm going to go visit my sister Oonah. It has been too long." Hork'alin looked at her confused, not knowing that name, nor that Qit had... other sisters. After all, he was her brother.

And with a head nod, the Sister was gone from Desnind and her baby. She turned and saw Oonah climbing upon a stool, ordering a beer, in Common. The Sister was back in the Beneath now, and she huffed. Oonah, being an anchor, would be able to see, hear, and otherwise interact with her just fine. But the Sister preferred to be there in the real world. She reached out, finding that veil between the real world and the Beneath. She was better at finding it now. She used her hand that had the long, venomous turtle claws, and stabbed through it, forming a small hole.

She growled, and began slashing, ripping, and tearing at this divide between her and the world of the living. She bit and kicked and snarled at it. People around Oonah would begin hearing these noises as the vergeance was formed, but they could not see what was happening. People began to look worried, color draining from their faces. Soon, the Sister stepped through the vergeance, tired and a bit depleted of ectoplasm, and she looked down at Oonah with a smile on her face.

"Hello Sister mine," in their shared native tongue.

Then she remembered the manners that Faith and Oonah had always insisted upon. She looked at the man who was deathly pale and shaking so violently, the beer he was preparing to hand to Oonah was spilling everywhere. In Common, "Hello. I sister of Oonah please. Nice meet you please. Want one beer please. No spill please." Satisfied, she waited with Oonah on their beers to arrive, totally forgetting the fact that she had no money.

In Xanthean, "How are you, Sister mine? I have missed you so much. Blackbird misses you too." The Sister was the personality that came out the least, and had no good tether to the passage of time. She did not know what day it was, nor what day it had been the last time she'd seen Oonah. Whether or not it had been a single day or half a season, it was the same insurmountable amount of time to the Sister.

The Sister looked around, "This... is Rharne, yes? Looks like it. Why is everyone celebrating?"

Cail looked at her clothes not sure if they were right for a festival, but for now they would have to do. Holding the green cloak in her hands with the mark of the order, she was not sure if a beer festival was the right place to wear it or not. The woman smiled gently hearing the sounds of Paige and and Triton as they buzzed around the cabin. Even though the child would not be able to drink any of the brews featured for the evening, she was excited to go and see if there were games or candies to be had. Looking back at the cloak, the Biqaj smiled and decided to put on her cloak. The woman had made a choice to join the order there was no reason to be ashamed even if she had no medical background.

Tying it into place, she turned to face her campanions for the evening. Laughing, the woman hugged the child when she ran over and hugged her. With a pet to Tritons head, she herded the pair outside of the cabin. From what the woman could tell earlier, there had been a lot of work going on in preparation for the event. Stretching she walked down the docks heading towards town while popping her back. The woman was not sure who all she would see at the festival. Genn had been the one to say something about it coming up, but Cail had not had the time to ask if she or Oonah would be in attendance.

“Ready to go, Paige?” Cail asked with a smile.

She and the child had been getting along better and better. The little one had made it clear that she did not want to go to the orphanage. Cail did not blame her in the slightest, it did not sound like a fun place to live at. Especially if she were to make friends then them being taken away by possible parents. A smile appeared on the nervous face of the newest healer to the order. The woman tickled the little girl as they made it into the heart of the festival. The shouting of the venders sounded from all around the small group. Triton pranced beside them barking if he felt someone did not see them.

It did not take long for the woman to spot Oonah from her perch at a quieter stall. She patted her leg when the dog drifted not seeing the two turn towards the establishment. Cail shifted in the cloak some since she was still not used to the new clothing item. The person or rather ghost that sat beside Oonah was what the confused the woman. Confused, she tried to peg the woman before they made it because of the familiar feeling in her mind. The last thing Cail wanted to be was rude to who she knew.

“Hello, Oonah! It can’t be, is that you Qit’ria?” Cail called seeing her new “sister”. After finally pinning the woman a smile appeared on the Biqaj’s face.

Nearby one of the stalls where beer and various other brews were being showcased and hawked, a potted plant rustled with intensity. First, gently, then, growing insistence as if there were animals running around it. Finally, with a faint glow of light, Kisaik emerged, holding his locket which contained the magic acorn, that allowed world-wide travel through the network of plants. Thus he found himself in the Mecca of alcohol, Rharne. Just where he wanted to be, though he hadn't the faintest idea where Rharne was.

Even so, he knew there was beer nearby. He'd gone into that tree in Melrath, with the intention and sense that there was beer on the other side, beer he could enjoy and try to get drunk on, once and for all.

He was equipped with his masterwork tip top tunawa armor, which was light as his own body, yet protective and resistant to corrosion in the same instance. He took a quick glance around, taking stock of his surroundings. It was difficult, with so many tall folk crowding the place. He thought to jump to the shoulder of someone, but that would've been rude.

THerefore, he did the next best thing, climbing to the top of one of the tent stalls. Once to the top of one of these tents, he put his hand to his brow, looking around to see what he could see.

All around were various fragrant smelling brews, which brought some sap to his lips in anticipation of tasting them. He wondered idly if he was the first tunawa to try or even enjoy that most favored of human delicacies.

By chance, his bright gleaming eyes fell upon one particular table, around which a small group of humans were congregating around... was it, yes it was! A Tunawa lass! Amazing.

Yet not so amazing. Of course if there were tunawa present, they'd be gathering around them. Tunawa were the best people, afterall, and made everyone happy when they came around.

He grinned widely to himself, and slid down to the opening of the tent.

Kisaik chirped for a local lug. "Quick, tall person! Be a good lad and pay some of these folk to bring a sampling of EVERY brew to that table over yonder! I'll be over there, performing experiments!" he shot the human a shiny gold nel, to sweeten his disposition, and thus made for the table.

So saying, he hopped like a grasshopper from shoulder to shoulder, barely making a impact with each landing, yet almost falling several times for lack of balance. He nearly fell into one lad's cup, but managed to regain his footing on his wrist before jumping off again. His legs he elongated with each leap, to give it more distance, until he arrived at the table, which he hit with a clumsy roll.

Once there, he swept his cloak aside in a graceful yet dramatic bow to all present, "Hello good folk. It is I! Orange Knight of the Fairy Realm, Knight of the First Tree, Mädärä Kisaik Ciuruọrun sọ Kufuata Karo! I'm here to sample your brews, on a quest to see if a tunawa can become truly drunk!" Although he spoke all the words in tree-talk, by virtue of the mirrored pendant around his neck, everyone at the table would understand him perfectly well.

Shortly after his arrival, samples would begin pouring in from around the festival, as people that Quick slipped a silver nel or two to were motivated to aiding the task of this tunawa. Soon enough, the table began filling up with a veritable wall of beer around the edges.

"Now, lets see if we can get a tunawa drunk!"

Re: What Happens at the Beer Festival

Sat Nov 09, 2019 6:40 am

Gennadiya soon found herself amidst the crowds at the festival. She held a wide smile on her face as she walked among the merry makers. It was hard not to feel happy with so many people enjoying themselves. Despite the party around her Gennadiya still walked with the same firmness and grace that marked her character.

Gennadiya wasn’t aware of the looks she was receiving as moved down the steps of the mountain city. Plenty of men both young and old watched her walk by appreciating the sway of her hips and her posture. Some of the more drunk ones even called out to her but Genna ignored them or in most cases didn’t realize they were talking to her. Her billowing skirt seemed to taunt and tease as the danced around her legs.

The young Lysoria woman was looking to see if she could see any of her friends her at the festival. Gennadiya slowed as she came to one of the busier sections of the festival. The young woman rather dramatically came to a stop as she smacked into someone who had suddenly stepped in front of her. Gennadiya looked at the sudden barrier in her way. Before her was a large man he wasn’t actually that much taller than her, he was certainly broader then her. Gennadiya would guide that man did some type of labor work based on his size and also the exposed arm muscles.

He was grinning down at her and the young healer could smell the reck off bad bear on not only his breath but him. The sapphire blue eyes turned cold as she took in the way he was looking at her. He wasn’t bad to look at but she wasn’t looking for someone who was already this drunk only an hour after it the festival had started. Gennadiya stood her ground as she meet the man’s eyes. The two stood there staring each other down. The young woman slipped her war fan out of its sheath as they stood there.

“Hello Genna.” The young healer was surprised by the fact this man knew her names, but she just raised her eyebrow. “I was hoping we could celebrate the festival together.” He said grinning at her again. The young woman had to take a step back at that point from the smell. In addition to the smell Gennadiya was setting the other signs of some who drank too much which included the strain on his teeth and well as the veins standing out in his nose.

“I am sorry I don’t know who you are and I have plans to meet friends.” Gennadiya looked around hoping to see her friends. It was then that she did notice Cail at a table. She didn’t get a good look but suspected Oonah might be at the table. Her view was instantly cut off as the unwelcome man moved into her field of view.

“But that is the point. I want you to know me better.” He raised his eyebrows up and down. “I would like it if we became foods friends.”

Gennadiya was getting annoyed by this man. She wasn’t stupid and knew someone liked him could breed dangerous because he was stupid. She held her war fan more firmly.

“I am sorry sir but not now.” The man’s drunk eyes flashed and she reached out and grabbed her arm.

“Let go.”

The man grinned broader and tightened his hold on her arm. Gennadiya responded instantly, arcs of tracing kicking in. She slammed the metal hilt of her war fan into the man’s balls. It was far closer then she wanted to get but it had the desired effect. The man let go and his mouth opened into a o shape.

Gennadiya didn’t waist any time and walked around the pervert and flipping her war fan open casually danced her self as she walked over to the table where her friends were. “Cail, Oonah, Qit’ria it is nice to see you. Can I join you?” Gennadiya said her voice just a bit frazzled thought she controlled it well.

Re: What Happens at the Beer Festival

Tree Talk Xanthean Common

Just the smell of the yeasty brew drew sap flowing into her mouth as the bartender pulled a long handled lever tapping a wooden keg to release golden liquid into a very large mug. Rubbing her palms together, Oonah figured that if an entire town could celebrate a beverage she must surely be in for a treat.

Suddenly the bartender looked startled as snarling and ripping sounds and a feeling of the world beginning to tip caused the beer to slosh from the tap to splatter upon the floor at his feet. Then everything tipped back to right and her heart-sister, Qit, appeared beside her. Surprised, Oonah's mouth gapped before growing into one of her widest grins as Qit quite casually placed her order as if she hadn't just single-handidly disrupted this entire part of the celebration.

Holding arms wide, Oonah welcomed her best friend into a hug. "Heart Sister! Well met! Did you feel my hope that you would come? Yes, Rharne. Can you believe that this is celebration of a beverage called 'beer'?!" Oonah reached into a pocket of her satchel for the coin needed for both their beverages and waited expectantly for the frazzled bartender to clunk their mugs down in a slop of frothy dribble. "I have missed you and Blackbird so much. Tell me, Little Caza must not be so little anymore..."

Just before Oonah could take her very first sip from the lip of her brimming mug, she heard her name called out again. Turning about, her face lit up joyously to see Cail approach through the crowd with Paige and Triton in tow. "Come well, Cail! To you too, hello, Paige and Triton." Flicking her fingers at their bartender, she ordered up a beer for Cail. "Good a party this is turning out now to be!"

As Qit and Cail exchanged their greetings, Oonah smacked her lips over the effervescent beverage that tickled her nose with little popping bubbles and the tempting scents of barley and hops. Now she would get to try....

Their table shook as a small, long-limbed figure tumbled across the top to stand enigmatically with a grace-recovered bow and swirl of cloak. Hearing her native tongue so unexpectely stunned Oonah to her core. She had hunted and searched for other Tunawa for seasons with no luck; and then out of the blue one just tumbles before her. She listened in wonder as he rattled off a lot of words, of which she was certain contained a name somewhere. Oonah suspiciously shifted to protect her still-untouched beer from his reach when he exuberately revealed his intent to 'sample your brews,' but then the first samples began to arrive and Oonah felt a little more gracious knowing he would have plenty to taste besides her own.

Her viney tongue licked dry lips at the delay yet again to take her first sip, feeling instead the importance of giving welcome and introductions. It was 'Being courteous' as their friend Faith had taught her an Qit.

Oonah gave an awkward bow in turn and offered Kisaik her hand for the wrist clasp she had learned from Qit as the Sev'ryn greeting. She mimicked his wordy name in their tongue, a rolling litany of trills, chirps and whistles, "Hello Brother! Orange Knight of the Fairy Realm, Knight of the First Tree, Mädärä Kisaik Ciuruọrun sọ Kufuata Karo. I'm pleased to finally meet a fellow Tunawa! I am Oonah, of Desnind's Ojogbon." Then she offered introductions in broken common, pointing each out in turn, "Please for you to know sister friends these, Qit'Ria and Cail Qy'Jihai. Experiments to do I like muchly, what means do you for Tunawa to get drunk?"

Kisaik's obvious exuberance for the beverage only built her anticipation and finally it was time for her very first taste and she felt driven to do right by her new Tunawa friend. Placing her hands along both sides of her mug, Oonah dipped her face up to her branches into the stout brew for a large swallow....

....and emerged with her expression twisted so badly in a 'bitter beer face' that she didn't even hear Gennadiya's struggled approach and escape into the security of being with friends.

The Sister bent down, hugging her sister Oonah, her smile bright and her heart warm. In their native tongue, with a chuckle in her voice, "Beer is fun. I met Blackbird's father because of beer. And dancing. And meat pie." And at the mention of her daughter, Oonah's niece, the Sister's belly and breasts swelled, and her smile practically glowed as the Mother took over. "Blackbird is so big now. She's running around all the time, speaking. She likes to collect animals, mostly snakes these days. So strong." Then just as gradual of a shift, the Sister came back. "How long have I been away? Have you been well?"

The Sister looked up at the sound of the voice that she knew people called her. She smiled. She remembered the woman who spoke it. Her name was... Quail. She had the dog that tried to eat Oonah. Until the Sister had scared it off. Her smile broadened at this. She nodded her head at Quail, "Yes. Hello, Quail. You dog much gooder behave." She didn't remember the child. The Sister smiled politely at the girl.

A quick movement in the corner of the Sister's eye caused a sudden jerk of her head to the side to follow it. In one smooth motion, the Sister was gone and the Huntress had replaced her. The fierce, feral woman watched with sharp eyes as she found the quick, bouncing person. A Tunawa, hopping along the shoulders of the crowd. She instantly relaxed, and the Sister came back out once more.

She smiled at the newly arrived Tunawa, and spoke in her native Xanthean, "Well met, Kufuata. You are most generous. I am the Sister. Though some call me Qit'ria, though it is not a name I recognize." She'd never realized that Tunawa couldn't get drunk. And she empathized with the man. She had gotten drunk once in life, and it was a joyful occasion. But she couldn't any longer.

Her smile dropped into a sad frown, "I wish you luck in your quest..." As her smile dropped, so did the temperature of the air around her. It wasn't something she could control, but as she dipped into her depression of her death, the cold found her. Soon, those closest to her would feel it, would find their breath's fogging the air. The beer in her hand soon became the coldest of brews around.

As Gennadiya approached, the Sister looked over at her forlornly. For a brief moment, a dull green cape appeared on the back of the Sister, signalling the change into the Healer. In Common, "Yes, please join us, Jenny D. Yeah. The more the hairier." But there was no joy in her words, as the cloak disappeared once more, leaving the Sister behind, saddened and cold. She watched as Oonah failed to enjoy the first taste of beer and she couldn't even smile. There was so much joy and happiness and... life here. And she missed it. All of it.

The woman smiled brightly glad to see her friend who had always seemed very annoyed with her. Cail introduced Paige when it was clear that Qit could not place her name. The Biqaj knew the feeling and remembered only briefly introducing them before Qit had vanished many seasons ago. Perhaps now after time had passed they would be able to restart their “friendship” or at least what Cail considered a friendship. She had not really asked the woman if they were friends because it always seemed like an awkward thing to do. The young female had become very good friends with Oonah since their first encounter when Triton thought of her as a stick.

If memory serves her right, Cail had thought Oonah was a magic talking stick as well though. The woman asked for some water for Paige to drink so that she could stay with the group. Normally she would have left the child and dog back on the boat, but Paige had begged to come and promised not to try anything funny. Triton barked and raised up sniffing at Oonah wanting to be petted using Cail’s leg to stay propped up. Chuckling the woman shook her head and let him get her attention, should he continue to bark after she chose whether to pet him or not the woman would call him off and make him lay at her feet.
Cail decided not to really participate in the drinking with her cloak on. The last thing she needed to do was bring disgrace to the order. But that also meant that if something happened, the new healer would be expected to have the answers about what was going on. With Oonah there and Qit, the nerves were much better than they had been while walking past the super busy stalls. Looking over, the woman smiled when Genn finally made it up to the stall with all of them. The young Biqaj had to fight her face to be shocked when the other Tunawa had appeared in their table. A smile graced her features trying not to giggle when it was clear that Oonah had not cared much for the drink.

“Welcome to the festival Genn! It is good to see you made it. I had hoped I would see you while adventuring the stalls,” Cail said with a bright smile.
