Rynmere Gazette

Rynmere Gazette

Image
The Rynmere Gazette is located in Midtown, housed in an unassuming, one-story tall, grey stone building. A copy of the most recent issue of the paper is always pinned to a bulletin board just outside the front door for passersby to read.

Inside the building, visitors are greeted by worn wooden floors and a receptionist. A stack of the current issue of the Gazette sits atop the receptionist’s desk next to a vase filled with either fresh flowers (during Ashan and the Hot Cycle) or ornamental branches (during the Cylus and the Cold Cycle). Purchases of both the current and back issues of the Gazette can be made at the reception.

Beyond the reception, a white door leads into the main office. An assortment of desks are lined up across a moderately-sized room. Most are occupied by busy journalists scribbling news stories, reviewing drafts, or questioning interviewees. Each journalist is assigned their own desk, which means overall tidiness and organization varies depending on the individual.

Abby Merchant, the paper’s Editor-in-Chief, sits apart from the journalists in a closed-door office. She manages the employees, hires new journalists, editors and printers, and has the final say over what content is included in each issue. She is always looking for new blood to join her team, as her goal is to one day have eyes and ears all over Rynmere and, perhaps, across all of Idalos.

The back half of the Gazette contains two movable metal type printing presses, which are used to transfer black ink to individual issues of the Gazette. When the printing presses are not in use, Andaris residents are able to rent out time in order to print their own notices or essays under the supervision of a professional printer. Note: The Gazette is not responsible for any material published by folks who rent out time on their printing presses.

The Gazette offices are open to the public from the 6th break to the 18th break, though employees often work into the late breaks of the evening. There is always something to do – whether it be writing an article, editing, drafting the layout, or printing the next issue of the paper.

Pricing

Abby Merchant

Image
Race: Human
Age: 34
Title: Editor-in-Chief
Skills: Writing: 55, Leadership: 51, Intimidation: 45, Politics: 42, Intelligence: 33

Although she does not strike a particularly imposing figure at 5'6", Abby Merchant is tough as nails. She tells it like it is and commands the respect of those who work for her. She is very politically minded, and is conscious of how the Rynmere Gazette appears to the Kingdom. She will never allow an article to be published that outright slanders a member of a noble family, as she is very much aware that the Gazette is allowed to exist primarily through the King's goodwill.

She joined the Gazette as a journalist after she graduated from Rynmere's university, and worked her way up to Editor-in-Chief through years of honing her skills. Abby manages the employees, hires new journalists, editors and printers, and has the final say over what content is included in each issue. She is always looking for new blood to join her team, as her goal is to one day have eyes and ears all over Rynmere and, perhaps, across all of Idalos.

Fern Llewellyn

Image
Race: Human
Age: 23
Title: Gossip Columnist
Skills: Persuasion: 38, Writing: 35, Storytelling: 35, Investigation: 28

Fern Llewellyn is eternally optimistic. She has a tendency to look on the bright side, and adores getting to know others. Although she is frequently late and is obsessed with gossip, she is quite well-liked by those who know her. Her colleagues describe her as cheerful, curious, and kind.

She stands at 5'3" with long blonde hair and sea blue eyes. She is a strikingly pretty woman, which means those around her tend to underestimate her abilities. This is a mistake that she frequently uses to her advantage.

Fern was born and raised in Fort Venora, and moved to Andaris City at age 18. She began working for the Gazette during the 713th Arc as a printer, but was soon moved into a columnist role thanks to her uncanny ability to ferret out rumours. In addition to being the Gazette's gossip columnist, she is also the most knowledgeable employee when it comes to the latest Ryn style trends. She lives in Midtown, and can most often be found at the Rynmere Gazette or trying to sneak into elite parties.

Reed Winham

Image
Race: Human
Age: 28
Title: Receptionist
Skills: Interrogation: 37, Logistics: 32, Storytelling: 29, Intimidation: 26

Reed Winham has a chip on his shoulder. He has been working as a receptionist at the Gazette since Arc 510 with the hope that Abby will one day recognize his talent and promote him to a journalist role. Unfortunately, he is widely known throughout the Gazette as being a terrible writer. There is also very little chance of his improvement, thanks to his stubborn belief that talent pours out of his ears.

Reed is the first face that greets a visitor at the Gazette. Depending on his mood, Reed will either be entirely disinterested in the visitor or he will revel in interrogating them about their purpose and general life choices. He dresses only in black, and has a bowl cut and sideburns that give him a distinct look of displeasure at all times.

Outside of the Gazette, Reed can be found skulking around the Andaris Marketplace or sitting in pensive silence at Ye Olde Inn.

Basilius Moad

Name: Basilius Moad
Created by: Caius Gawyne
Race: Human
DOB: Ymiden 76, 665 (52 years old)
Title: Master Printer of the Rynmere Gazette
Blessings/Curses: N/A
Skills: Printmaking: 50, Smithing (metal type) 25, Bookbinding 25
Other Information: Basil, or Basil or Baz, is a cranky old pressman. He's been printing and maintaining the presses for the Rynmere Gazette since he himself was an apprentice well over 30 arcs ago. He runs a tight print room, is very selective about who he chooses to take on as an apprentice (often University art students), and is able to churn out new editions of the Gazette with blinding speed over night, just in time for morning delivery in the wee breaks before dawn. He drinks a lot of coffee and alcohol, smokes, and curses. He's not afraid to make slurs and derogatory remarks, but underneath the greasy, ink-crusted old shell is a proud man who encourages aspiring craftsmen in his own special way.
