[Venora] A Work of Art (Tristan Venora)

"Oh, I am sure."

Besides the king and himself both being residents of Rynmere, there was nothing else. From what he's heard, Cassander Renault is not exactly the friendliest king either and since he is aware of this, he wants nothing to do with him. Daliane has to admit though, the young king is handsome and if he were anything but the king, he would be more than likely to flirt with him. "Maybe I'll try to connect with him." Daliane lied to his friend. "I'm sure they do. I know my father is not an evil man but I am not sure about my other relatives and other houses."

He remembers the awkward conversations he would have with his father about his uncles and the barons of other houses. Many think the root of all evil is money. My boy, that is not true. One's own status and where they stand in life, that is what all wrongdoing can be traced back to. Especially in Rynmere. There are people living in poverty who would kill to be in your position, and those in your position will do the same to be in mine. This could go on forever Daliane could hear his father's voice in his head. The conversations always ended the same way and although the conversation may be the same, he still does not understand what his father means.

"Is it because she is not a member of any of the Great Houses?" He leaned against the table with the sculpture, an expression on his face that showed just how serious the question was to him. "I overheard my grandfather once talking about the queen. I hear many nobles talking about her and many make prejudice statements." He took a deep breath and sighed before continuing. "The first queen was both a Venora and a Andaris, her children became Warricks and finally, a few generations later, every house is intertwined with the throne." He laced his fingers together to represent what he was saying. "But someone realized, down the line, that if we continued this cycle, the Royal bloodline will become tainted and very confusing. So he or she, I cannot remember who was the first to marry someone that was not a noble, decided to marry what many consider a lowborn or foreigner." Daliane remembers learning from his father that when things like this happens, it causes many problems. Massacres happened when kings or queens married a foreigner. "Sometimes I wonder if the queen is really evil and if she is a terrible person, I wonder if the lords and ladies drove her to be such a terrible person with their judgement?"

He was off topic and when he realize that he was, Daliane apologized and laughed. "Sorry." He wasted the poor man's time with his rambling. "Sometimes, I turn an entire conversation around and say too much of what I am thinking." He laughed some more and pressed a hand against his stomach.

Tristan had a wonderful laugh himself, Daliane did not mind that the lord was laughing at him too. "She'll come back. This place is a mess without her." He was joking but there was some truth to that. Bianca may not seem like the most important person of House Venora, everything she did had always been discreet and quiet. The deals, the marriages she arranged and even advice she gave to those having trouble in bed, all go unnoticed. But these things kept the place going and Venoras stronger than ever. "I can't wait to see her!"

As Tristan talked, Daliane gave a slight nod of his head after every sentence to assure him that he was listening. When Tristan was done speaking, Daliane spoke up."Your grandmother and aunts-- they all kept me close. You see, my purpose of being here as a child was to learn from the duchess and your aunts. So most of my time was spent with women and less with the men." He shook his head to the question. "Bianca is a true follower of Zanik and she's taught me much about pleasing the same sex but she's never taken me to that place. I was a child! And the brothel means a lot to her. The Monastery is where those who are committed the Sacred Seven go to worship and to Bianca, the brothel is almost equivalent to that. It is where she confesses her sins and commits more in the name of Zanik." He wiggled his eyebrows and winked. Bianca believed in the Sacred Seven, but she believed in Zanik even more. It was the Immortal who changed her life around and made her who she is today.

"I hope they do show up." The hand that was placed on his stomach moved up toward his chest, going over his heart. He could feel his mark grow icy at the mentioning of Immortals. He could not help but to think of his encounter with Ziell. Would all encounters with Immortals be like that? If Zanik or Vri appeared, he would like to ask them that question. "I've seen drawings of the two in books and I wonder if those drawings portray them well. If so, they're handsome."

Looking at Summer Nights, who was still leaning against his leg, he laughed. "Summer is lazy. She would never listen." The pig was spoiled rotten and she enjoyed doing absolutely nothing. "I could try dancing, maybe? I used to dance a lot when I was little." He did not dance too much anymore. In fact, he could not recall the last time he danced. "I want to do something that will not require too much strength and time."

[Venora] A Work of Art (Tristan Venora)

"I don’t care where she comes from at all", Tristan replied as Daliane asked him if he didn’t like the queen because she was not a member of any of the Great Houses. He was a little offended that the younger man had even felt the need to ask that question. "I know that there are a lot of people in Rynmere to whom lineage is everything, but to be honest, to me the most important thing is that somebody is a good person, although I’m not completely sure what a good person should be like."

"I’m not prejudiced at all", he added firmly in case Daliane was still wondering about that. "As far as I am concerned, King Cassander could have married an Aukari or an Yludih, although I’m not sure if humans and Yludih can have children together." He furrowed his brow a bit as he thought about that and whether anybody had ever tried it, but then he shrugged his shoulders, deciding that it wasn’t really important right now, although he might do some reserarch later on because it was quite a fascinating matter.

"Politics are complicated and confusing and exhausting, don’t you agree?" he remarked with a small sigh as Daliane proceeded to talk about how the noble houses were all connected and how the royal bloodline had been at risk of becoming tainted. Sometimes he was really tempted to stir things up a bit because all those stiff lords and ladies were getting on his nerves, even if such a thing would probably land him in prison.

"There’s no need to apologize though", he continued. "I quite like people that say what they think. I often say what I think as well which probably isn’t always the best course of action and has gotten me in trouble more often than not." He shrugged his shoulders again because he really didn’t mind getting in trouble. On the contrary, it was fun!

As Daliane talked about what he had learned from his grandmother and his aunts, Tristan leaned against the wall, crossed his arms over his chest and listened very closely as he was quite interested. "I’ve never heard anybody compare the brothel to a monastery", he murmured. "If the brothel is a monastery, I might be a religious man after all." He laughed a little as he said that, and his eyes lit up, and then he suddenly looked very thoughtful. Unlike Daliane he preferred the company of women, but sometimes he couldn’t help but wonder what it would be like to kiss a man nevertheless.

"I think Zanik is the better looking one", he said, secretly thinking that if Zanik showed up and professed his love for him, he would be very tempted no matter what kind of preferences he normally had as he’d always secretly dreamed of having an immortal lover. "Vri always looks a little moody in his drawings. As for your lazy pig …" He looked at the lazy pig in question and wondered if he should try to stroke it after all, but then came to the decision that he still needed his fingers. He didn’t think he could draw or sculpt without them.

"… have you ever tried to bribe her with food? I have a cat back in Andaris, and he would do anything for a bit of food! Although dancing might be the better choice. That or acting. You don’t need a lot of strength for either job, although you still need to practice unless you are naturally talented, like me." He said the last thing with a smile. He wasn’t a good dancer at all, but sometimes he liked to pretend that he was and make a fool of himself because always acting the part of the dignified noble lord was boring.

[Venora] A Work of Art (Tristan Venora)

13th of Ashan, 716

Hearing Tristan's tone of voice become just as firm and grim than his own was shocking. Yet it made him aware of how critical and unsmiling he was at the moment. The stunning child of the Duke's youngest son hoped he did not sound brash or anything close to it. He hoped he did not offend his friend either or hurt his feelings. Tristan is not prejudice, he knew this. The lovely Venora male was simply expressing how he felt. Daliane had come to realize that he talked about the Dukes and Duchess in the same manner too. He holds no grudge against the regular people because like myself, he could care less about one's status.

"Of course you're not, I apologize for asking such a question." It was a terrible one too, he didn't know why he would even ask. "Yludih shapeshift, correct? I don't know much about them." He remarked and gave a slight shrug. Daliane never really cared too much for their kind anyway. He's never really came across one either, which is why he did not care for them.

A heavy sigh escaped his lips at the mention of politics. He agreed. Politics were too complicated and the only thing his family seemed to care about. After giving a nod of his head Daliane said, "I only know a bit about politics because of my father. We don't talk much but when we do...politics is one thing he likes to talk about." Gavin Andaris was a man that loved his job. He never said this aloud but Daliane could just tell how much his father loves working for the King.

"Well, you'll like me a lot." He teased, giving Tristan a wink before grinning. He doesn't recall ever getting in trouble after speaking his mind. Maybe it is because he apologizes each time he does.

It was a good thing Tristan wasn't religious. What Daliane said might've been taken the wrong way and he did not mean it. In no way is the Monastery similar to a brothel. But to one of his favorite people, Bianca, a brothel is sacred. A monastery to a monk is what a brothel is to Bianca. He should've put it that way. That sounded much better. "All you Venoras are alike." He laughed. Daliane had been laughing this entire time. "Is there a Venora here who doesn't worship the harlots that roam the streets and where they come from?" He could answer that question himself.

"Maybe it is because I am not into older men, but I believe Zanik is not as attractive as Vri." He looked around the room, hoping the Immortal didn't hear him. Unlike the sacred seven, the Immortals can hear everything. They saw everything too and he knew this very well. After all, one has given him a blessing. "I think Vri just needs a big hug and kiss! He doesn't know the power of his own domain. Maybe if someone showed him how great love is, he'll change."

Tristan referring to his pig made him finally pick her back up and place her against his hip. "All the time but she doesn't even try to get it." He told him, forgetting to mention that he always gives her the food anyway. "Pigs cannot act, silly." He told Tristan before thinking about what has been said and blushing. "You mean me, oops. Well, I don't know. I'm not talented like the Venoras." He responded to Tristan's joke, a haughty smile coming afterwards.

[Venora] A Work of Art (Tristan Venora)

"They do", Tristan confirmed as Daliane asked him if Yludih shapeshifted. "At least I think they do. I don’t know much about them either, but I think shapeshifting would be a really great ability to have. I could make myself look like cousin Alistair and do all kinds of inappropriate things." He laughed, even though it was, come to think of it, mean and at least slightly evil to tarnish another person’s reputation like that.

On the other hand, some of his family would probably deserve it …

"You poor guy", he remarked as Daliane revealed that his father talked to him about politics, if he talked to him at all. "I’m not all that close to my parents, but at least I can have a halfway normal conversation with them, unlike with Granny Ebony. She just loves to criticize me. Why, the other trial she told me that I didn’t hold my teacup correctly. Who honestly cares about that?" he asked, quite exasperated.

"As for the Venoras worship of harlots …" He joined Daliane’s laughter. There was something about the younger man’s company that always put him in a good mood. "I can actually think of one. My dear cousin Alistair is always so noble and dignified. He holds himself so straight, he probably swallowed a stick. If he were confronted with a harlot, he would probably stare at her coldly and say, 'This would be inappropriate for a man of my station.'"

He said the latter in an unfortunately bad imitation of Alistair’s voice (if Alistair heard him, he would be horrified!). "Don’t tell him that I said that though. I may make fun of him occasionally, but I love him nevertheless and don’t want him to be mad at me."

"You’d like to hug and kiss Vri and make him change?" he asked. "Well, I wish you good luck with that because it sounds like a monumental task. I’d rather kiss somebody who isn’t quite as morbid. Ilaren would also be nice." He also looked around, but unlike Daliane he wasn’t worried. On the contrary, he hoped that his favorite Immortals in all of Idalos would hear him, come to him and then gave him what he wanted.

"So, anyway", he said, remembering the way Daliane had entered his refuge and who he had been talking to before that. He suddenly looked just a hint worried, even though he tried not to show it. "Do Granny Ebony and my aunts know where you are? Do you think they are looking for you?"

[Venora] A Work of Art (Tristan Venora)

Daliane shook his head and placed a hand on his hip when Tristan talked about shapeshifting into his cousin, Alistair, and ruining his reputation. "You're terrible! Lord Tristan, you know as well as I do how important the heirs are to our houses." He was almost nonchalant. Daliane hardly cared about the Ducal throne or even who would take it. Growing up, the importance of those who would rule a duchy never really occurred to him, neither did it apply to him. Gavin Andaris, being the busy and relaxed man that he is, never really emphasized the importance of the Ducal throne to his children. Almost equivalent to his own status, Gavin Andaris' children will never have any claim to it. Daliane and his siblings will never become a Duke or Duchess. So what is the point of speaking of it?

A taunting air was placed upon his face at the mention of Duchess Ebony. He remembers the old woman fondly. She was so kind, so polite and affectionate toward him during his stay on the estate. "I care." The lord was poking fun at his friend, he did not really care. "I love Duchess Ebony almost as much as I love Bianca." If it were not for the Duchess, he would have never been invited to stay with the Venoras. Tristan may not be aware -- She was present during his birth. Not intentionally, Ebony was only visiting the Andaris when he was born. Ironically, she was enjoying a cup of tea with the Andaris women and so happened to notice Rah'lyn going into labor. What possessed the eldest member of the Venoras to stay and await the arrival of Gavin's child is beyond anyone's intuition. Tristan's grandmother was one of the first to see Daliane and point out his distinct looks. "It may be the pleasing Sev'ryn's blood that created such a dainty baby boy" were her words.

Whilst, Peake and Alistair were different men, completely opposite of each other, their houses held them at high standards. Like his cousin, Alistair sounded like the perfect heir to his house. Alistair is good-looking, intelligent and from what he's heard so far, pure. Daliane remembers coming across Alistair a few times during his stay here and never has he ever seemed like he was undeserving of being the Duke. Much like Peake Andaris. The Venoras and Andaris are drastically different, Peake was raised to be much stronger, harsher than Alistair.Yet both would make perfect rulers to their territory in Daliane's eyes.

"What about men? What if women do not strike his fancy like others?" That was his response to Tristan's remark about harlots and the Venoras. He did not think Alistair was into men, this was always a question Daliane asked. He highly doubt anyone in his position would fall for men anyway.

"No worries, love, I do not speak to him much anyway."

"I think his morbid behavior is why I want to kiss him." The mixed blood shrugged and at the same time, tried to think of who Ilaren was and if she was important. The Immortal did not sound familiar. "My focus is mostly on the Sacred Seven." He paused. "I do not know many Immortals, only the ones that have an influence on my life. Sorry, I do not know who Ilaren is." She's not important. That's what he wanted to say to Tristan. The Immortal did not really matter to him.

Daliane had almost forgot about the grand entrance he made and the people who had come to visit him. How long had he been gone? It did not matter, he did not think they were looking for him. Tristan's family loved Daliane but they did not love him enough to go searching for him whenever he ran off. "They may know that I am here. Your aunt's will not come chasing after me though. Especially if they know you're here too." Another joke was made on Tristan's behalf.

[Venora] A Work of Art (Tristan Venora)

"Of course I know how important the heirs are!" Tristan retorted. "They are so important that we have several heirs across several branches of the family. If something happens to one of them, the next in line will inherit the duchy. And if all of Aunt Willow’s children disappear, I’ll become Duke Tristan Venora. Not that I want any of my cousins to disappear. I’m rather fond of them – well most of them."

He wasn’t sure about Zvezdana as she was a rather arrogant young woman. On the other hand she was also a rather pretty young woman which was something he definitely appreciated. A terrible personality was easier to tolerate when the person in question looked good.

"Well then", he remarked as Daliane insisted that he cared. "You can hold my teacup for me. I don’t understand how you can love Granny Ebony." He shuddered. "I mean, she’s my grandmother and everything, but she is so strict! You are either a masochist or she is only terrible to me which is of course a possibility. Maybe she dislikes my art?" He had never asked her about it, but he doubted she understood his surrealistic paintings.

"You know, Daliane", he told him. "You are a much better person than I am. Much nicer and more patient as well. You get along with everybody and care about everybody." He didn’t’ mean that as some sort of criticism. In a way Tristan envied the young Andaris. He didn’t know where Daliane got the patience to put up with the likes of Aunt Willow and try to see the best in everything from.

"Maybe he’s gay", he agreed as the conversation turned to the matter of Alistair’s sexuality and shrugged his shoulders as he didn’t particularly care who did what with whom as long as all the people involved participated voluntarily. "If he is, I hope he has good taste in men."

"Ilaren is the Immortal of Alcohol", he let Daliane know and shook his head. How could he not know? "She’s awesome. She’s my second favourite Immortal. I spend a lot of time in the taverns of Andaris to honor her. I even sacrificed a whole bottle of Venora Red to her once!" He looked quite proud as he said that. Giving away his wine was not easy for him.

"Are you sure?" he asked doubtfully as Daliane claimed that his aunts would not come chasing after him. "Aunt Willow and Granny Ebony have a tendency to show up at the most inopportune of moments and tell me what to do, which rarely involves painting or sculpting."

[Venora] A Work of Art (Tristan Venora)

A goddess of Alcohol? That's why Daliane did not think she was important. He appreciated a little wine at casual events or gatherings of the nobles but he was not much of a drinker. Daliane is likely to drink to make people think he is much older and that never really works out well for him. She's not that great of an Immortal. Not in his eyes.

"Tristan Venora, you're something else." Daliane did not know if he were joking or not. Ilaren is the Immortal of alcohol, dedicating a bottle of wine to her is nothing out of place. He imagine many people who drank often would sacrifice some of their alcohol for her in hopes that she will make their night one to remember (or not).

He was going to assure him that his aunt Willow was not searching for him. A shake of his head was all he could do before hearing his name being called. The voice echoed throughout the halls and eventually the room. "I was sure..." Daliane did not want to stop talking to Tristan just yet. There was so much more to talk about, Daliane felt a connection with the artist. "I guess I have to go...I don't want Baroness Willow and Duchess Ebony to come in here and criticize you."

Daliane stared at Tristan with a tense look on his face. If the ladies were that bad, he did not want to put Tristan in an awkward situation. "Nice seeing you. I hope we run into each other very soon..." He looked toward the painting and remembered a few things."...sorry about Summer again."

Turning on his heels, Daliane headed for the door. "Oh!" He halted. "Also, I would still like to be your model for that sculpture. Maybe we can schedule that for another day?"

Overview:

General comments. Great thread! It was a fun read and I really enjoyed it. I hope that painting gets made a masterpiece and all the way through the thread, I just kept thinking that somewhere in the corner of the room should be a spider making a "Some Pig!" web. I really enjoyed the similarities and differences between the two pc's and I agree - Daliane is a most excellent Venora!
Story Great - fun and quirky. Really enjoyed it.
Structure No worries at all. The only tiny point I'd make is that every now and then Daliane slipped into present tense out of past, or vice versa. Just keep an eye on that but it's a tiny tiny point. Really good, clear and coherantly written thread!
Please do PM me if you think I've missed anything or you have any questions!
