The Pantheon of the Blue Abyss

Image

Ashan 13th, 689

The child stood at the precipice of a Pantheon, marble columns lined the perimeter. All around the sound of rushing water, birds singing, and of the jungle primates chattering. His feet could feel the cold limestone beneath them. Ahead, a large river monitor. Behind him, the endless sky above and below. From whence those sounds came, he didn’t know. He couldn’t very well see where their vibrations hit the air currents. Something was wrong here.

The boy let his legs carry him forth, nearer to the creature, and it turned its head to him.

In shock, the boy started, taken aback. He stood on his heels while looking at the large monitor, and said ”Who?”

”You. Larza Impri.”

So named, the boy nodded, and took two steps backward. Then he jumped over the edge of the precipice, falling into the sky as his alabaster wings stretched out behind him.

Larza’s wings twisted and caught on the air currents, manipulating his position on the air. He fell into the sky shaped like the ruff-stuffed nest of a newly birthed Avriel. A comfortable bed of fur, feathers, and silk awaited him with its perfumed promises. Then, as he was about to touch down to it with his feet, the illusion gave way.

He fell farther than he knew the sky rose. Farther than the air told. Larza’s silhouette was upon the bright blue abyss. He shouted to it, answered by reflections. He swung and capered in the air before it, echoed memories tossed back by his own silhouette.

It was as the sensation he had, upon first learning to fly.

The nest did not give way to a great nothing. A chamber lie beyond that passage, rung on all sides by stones and trees and primates populating those boughs straining, grasping for purchase in the flesh of those silhouettes falling with him now.

Yes, there were other silhouettes. They were barely visible in the light of the deep sky. Only hints of them when the air currents swept over them, or a stray cloud rose above him as he fell.

His feathers fell from his wings. Larza moved as he picked up speed. His clawed hands extended, turning into knives that he would use to claw the primates and tear their chattering insults from their vile throats. His wings were not yet done, as he glided from bough to bough, tearing, cutting, slicing.

Each time he grew heavier, the fall became slower. It grew more sluggish until he was falling with what seemed the gravity of an anvil through a quagmire. The primates chattered, bit, slapped him while he sank into the sky. The endless blue accepted him as its own, and he was Larza Impre once more, upon the Pantheon of the Monitor.

This time, his legs carried him with more strength toward that reptile. He stood, stomping his feet down with the last step, spreading his wings wide, and putting his hands on his hips. He frowned at it, then let fly the aggregated sum of all songs he would ever sing, whether dismal or full of cheer. Insulting or praiseworthy.

Re: The Pantheon of the Blue Abyss

A scintillating frame of valance and cobalt wingtips descended from a bright spot far above them all. Larza looked to them, skyward, and stretched his arms and wings out above him. The metal wing coverings reflected the unbearable light of that distant body, sending rays of luminescence down on Larza and the Monitor alike.

The Monitor stood there, and did nothing. Said nothing. It simply was as it was, a massive eternally abiding reptile, that stood at the corner of every dream he'd been having that season.

Larza trembled when he realized that he might be dreaming, and thus almost awoke then and there. But something in the back of his mind coiled and stretched out to the dreamscape latching on there He'd become lucid. He looked from the valance that were slowly descending upon him, into the Monitor's black eyes.

The reptile smiled its reptilian smile, and merely waited. Then, with a sudden jerk, the valance fell on Larza's wings, snapping shut and covering them. The blades cut into his feathers, leaving some to send flying out over the endless sky beyond the Pantheon.

"These valance will protect you, so long as you will them to, here in this Pantheon."

So saying, the Monitor coiled up, and then came forward with a terrible exhalation, sending all manner of nightmarish fragments in Larza's direction.

Larza rose up on the wing, coiling as he lifted himself upwards. Then, with one swift dive into the sky, he twisted his wings to deflect the detritous that was thrown at him.

Fragments of nightmare like broken mirror shards flew apart before his valance.

Then, as he broke through the shattering mirrors of the dreamscaep, he dove further down. Into the interplay of light and darkness.

He sang a wordless tune as he dove. His valance shone in the distant light that had gifted them to him. His voice echoed on the air currents all around, gathering up those shards of mirror bits, those figments of a turmoil-ridden hell.

Inside the abyss, he found solace of a certain kind. THe feeling of diving through the air sent a thrill up and down his spine, into the core of his being.

Yet, as he went further down, he could hear cannon blasts shattering far above him. He whirled about on the wing, and looked upward. In a few moments, upward became across. Larza had to fly forward to meet the new challenge.

He twisted his wings similarly as he went, readying his sword to break apart whatever evil presence was headed his way.

What came forward, was snake-like in appearance, yet bearing strange fins, like one of those colorful fish that sometimes floated up on the shores of Athart. It's tail was that of a peacock, and it's snout of the monitor.

He rushed to face it, his sword trailing behind him as his valance-armored wings readied for the melee. The crash in midair was a meeting of fire and air. One feeding and empowering the other. Kalortah brought his sword forward to bite into the hide of that creature, and through the wound flowed an inky yellow fluid, that spread around the air instead of spilling straight down as a fluid would.

As they struggled to gain the upper hand over one another, the serpent whipped him with it's tail, sending him apart a score of leagues from the rest of the serpent.

He buffeted his wings to keep from spinning out of control, finding purchase on the air waves well enough to turn back around. The serpent was coiling its body, and then struck forward.

Larza brought his sword across his vision to collide with the creature's snout, dashing it's hide across the expanse of the air. Suddenly, it began disintegrating. From head to tail, it diminished and fell apart, until only those peacock feathers remained.

The dreaming avriel boy flew forward, to grasp those feathers, plucking them out of the air one by one, and then placin them in his valance.

He sang of his victory.

Summoning the strength to bear forward and upward, back toward the Pantheon, the avriel soared for what felt like hours. He must have gone the length of Idalos, half and again. Still, his eyes peered upon that distant marble structure, which became farther from him the more he flew. Finally, his wings tired of the valance, and he began to grow weaary.

A voice spoke to him, "You will not see the Pantheon, until you have the power to rebuild it, many decades from now you will remember this dream, and it will bring you some measure of strength in your infirmity and uncertainty."

Larza, now swiftly turning back into Kalortah, began deteriorating, as did the rest of the Dreamscape. "When Emea falls, and Idalos trembles and calls out for the lost, then will you remember...

Now awake!"

So the boy did awake, in his parent's nest in the Forest of Stones. He rubbed the sleep from his eyes, and went on light feet to find his parents. The small avriel felt all the more so for having had such a disturbing dream, and only wished to forget it while wrapped in the caring embrace of those who were closest.

He could not find his parents in their chambers, and so he went to visit his siblings, who were all asleep. There he found comfort under one of their wings, and promptly fell back to sleep, listening to the breathing of his sisters and brothers. Soon he would forget all that had transpired in that strange Dreamscape, but for the words "You will remember."
