One Old Ox

60 Ashan 716 (evening)

By the time Jachiel had made all the necessary arrangements and got out to his tiny farm, the light was fading again. The sprouting crops were no more than slightly taller, darker, patches of shadow around the farmhouse. The house itself was empty and unlit. Jachiel opened the door and wrinkled his nose at the damp mustiness of the air as he walked inside. There was, of course, no fire laid in the hearth. He dumped his belongings on the sturdy wooden table and went out again. Beside the small stone cottage was an open sided shed that held a wood pile, neatly stacked tools, barrels, bins, buckets and an aging ox. There wasn't enough light to see what colour the ox was, except that it was one solid colour and not patches. He offered his hand to it and let it get his scent, then went looking in the containers. There was a bin half full of feed and a barrel three-quarters full of fresh water.

He fed and watered the ox, then drew a second bucket of water for his own use. He carried that in, then had to come back for what wood he could carry in his one good arm. A fire in the fireplace would serve both for light and warmth. Although his right arm wasn't entirely useless - there was still some movement there, if very little strength - for practical purposes he did everything one handed. He shouldered the cottage door open, and left it that way for the moment, so that what little light there was outside could get in, and knelt to lay a fire in the empty hearth.

He preferred A-frame fires to pyramids these days - they didn't have the recurring problem of trying to hold existing sticks together while at the same time adding more - so he placed two thicker sticks flat on the stone hearth like two sides of a triangle. A third stick went across the middle of the first two, giving him a triangle of wood to support the thin kindling and a hollow beneath. Once it was laid out, he stood and went across to the table. Digging his tinderbox out of his bag, he flipped it open and took out tinder and his ring and rod striker set. The ring slipped easily onto his thumb and he pinched the tinder in a crooked finger, grasped the rod by the tip, and took it over to the fireplace. He eased down onto the floor again, steadied himself, and then smacked the butt of the rod against his boot. The ring scraped down the rod as it shot up through his grip. Sparks flew and caught in the tinder. He blew on the tinder until it erupted from glow to flame, then shoved it into the hollow beneath the wood. The kindling caught alight, and he dropped the rod and added more wood until the fire was burning steadily.

Once the fire was well alight, he climbed to his feet and plodded over to close the door. Then he turned and finally took a good look at the inside of the cottage that was his new home. It was plainly but decently furnished, with a bed, chairs, table, and a storage chest. Firelight danced across bare stone walls and flagstone flooring. He considered the bed for a moment - it had been a long, weary, day - but shook his head. Soon, he thought, but not yet. Instead, he went over to wrestle with the lid of the chest. It was wide enough to make it clear that whoever made it assumed all farmers would have two working hands to lift the lid up, but Jachiel got it up eventually. He smiled at the basic cooking and eating equipment inside, and fished out a cup and one of the cooking pots.

Over at the table once more, he used the cup to measure out dried beans from his meagre store of food, and water from the bucket, and set the beans aside to soak for tomorrow. For now, he cut himself a slice of melon, set the seeds aside to dry, and sprawled into a chair to eat. It tasted good, and he licked the juice off his fingers, stowed the rest of his belongings in the chest and peeled out of his coat. He hung it on the back of the chair, and was about to do the same with his gladius when there was an imperious yowl at the door.

He whipped round at the sound and his hand shifted on the gladius from just holding it to wrapping around the hilt ready to draw it. The yowl came again, louder and more demanding, and the tension in his shoulders relaxed slightly. It sounded like a cat. He grimaced, and unwound his fingers from his hilt. With two hands, he could have opened the door with his blade already drawn. As it was, he eased the door open cautiously, ready to body-slam it shut and draw his gladius if he was wrong. A black and white queen cat stared at him, tail wrapped primly around her paws, then sauntered in to sit by his fire. He closed the door behind her. "Where do you come from?" he asked, not expecting an answer. "Do you come with the farm?" Nobody had mentioned a cat, but she would be useful, particularly if she was a good hunter. Cats were always useful on farms for dealing with the mice and rats. In reply, the cat washed a paw and ignored him.

He scowled, then finished the task he'd been interrupted in. He laid gladius and belt on the chair, eased out of his boots and placed his feet flat against the cold stones of the floor. Tiredness washed over him as the adrenalin rush faded, and he clawed his way out of his clothes and rolled into the tempting bed. The last he remembered was a small bundle of warmth curling up against his back.

Comments:

If this is supposed to be a job thread, I'd like to see more word count and farming activity.
But I know you still have a placeholder so I'm not meaning to presume it was intended as a job thread. :D
I would be willing to consider it half a job thread, if the second half has more farming activity.
Just to be sure you know, you're only going for the season of Ashan, not Cylus also.
You've started too late in the cycle for that.
PM me with any comments or concerns :)
