Jachiel "Jay" Vanteer

Jachiel Vanteer
Image
Name: Jachiel Vanteer, often shortened to "Jay"

Age: 24 arcs

Race: Human

Date of Birth: 24th trial of Cylus, 693

Marks: None

Factions Joined: None

Languages Spoken: Fluent Common, Broken Rakahi
Appearance

Standing 5' 8" barefoot, Jachiel is built for strength and endurance in roughly equal amounts. He has mousy hair that straggles past his ears, half grown out of a soldier's short clip, hard brown eyes, and the weathered brown face of someone outdoors in all weathers. His nose looks to have been broken at least twice, and his right arm is badly burned and scarred and generally hangs stiffly by his side unless he tucks his hand in his pocket. He fights and works left handed.
Personality

He's wary, quick to put up mental and verbal defences against slights, and unwilling to ask for help even if he needs it. Beneath the defences lies a deep well of determination and adaptability that has served him well since his injury.
History

Jachiel was born the fifth child of seven, to a farming family in Venora, and helped out on the farm more and more as he grew up. He helped to feed and water the draft oxen, scare the birds away from the newly sown crops, pick stones out of the field before they broke the plough, gather hay and grain, water and weed the crops, prepare the harvest for storage or for meals, and any other task that could be done with little skill and less strength. What he really wanted was a farm of his own, but having so many older siblings meant that he was unlikely ever to inherit his parents' farm. He looked around at the other options and local traditions, very well aware that he had to find somewhere to work that he would enjoy before he turned 15, or he might find himself assigned to work on something he hated. Everybody worked. There was no escaping that, and hard work didn't faze him as long as he could enjoy it. In the end he followed a tradition of many other Venorans and joined the army. His family were part proud of him and part resigned. With such a large family it was expected that some would head off to other places, and a relief that Jachiel went of his own accord. On the day he left home, his parents presented him with the lefthanded gladius they had bought him, so that he would have something that bridged the gap between farm and barracks to remember them by.

Jachiel, being left-handed, was glad to have something made to suit him among all the right-handed equipment that tended to be issued, and learned well and hard over the next few years. He learned to groom, saddle, and ride the horse he was isued, to use his gladius, aim a bow straight and true, carry a shield for days unnumbered and still be fit to fight at the end, and much more. His left-handedness meant he was not suited to the shield wall, or to fighting in formation, but better suited to a looser style of combat where he could cut down the people who were looking at the wrong hand for the attack.

His military career came to an end in a battle against bandits - or at least what he thought at the time were bandits. More skirmish than formal battle, which suited him, and he found himself facing a red haired man wielding an axe. He brought his shield up between them, and used his bodyweight focused through the shield as a bludgeon to push the bandit back. The bandit managed to hook the axe over the top of the shield and cut deep into Jachiel's shield arm. In response, Jachiel stabbed upwards hard with his gladius, before the bloodloss and weakening of his arm lost him the cover of his shield. The man bled badly from the deep thrust, and for a moment Jachiel thought that was it. Then the man's burning blood hit him, searing into the open wound.

He doesn't remember what followed, only that he woke up under the healer's care to be told that while he still had the arm itself, it was badly enough damaged that he would probably never be able to pull a bow or carry a shield again. His dreams were over for a second time in his life, as they mustered him out of the army. He had to relearn almost everything one-handed, and account for the difference in balance that his injuries make, compared with before. With nothing to return to on the family farm, and unwilling to stay in Andaris and endure the constant looks of disgust and pity, he took his mustering out pay, and his gladius, and signed onto the first trade ship out as a ship's cook. That set of traders eventually landed him in Etzos. He saw the farms there as the traders approached from the south, and a new dream woke from the ashes of his old one.
Housing

Abilities

NameDevotion RequiredAbility Description
Bond (Minor) 0 The Favored can Bond with 1 other person. In doing so the Bonded individual gains a single glowing band around their left forearm. The Bond remains as long as both the Favored and the Bonded allow it. The Bond only functions within 300 feet of the Favored, and dissipates shortly beyond that distance.
Illustrious Skills 0 Add an extra three skill points to one of the following skills: Blades, Leadership, Discipline, or Endurance. Any skill points granted by this Mark can break the 100 point cap on skills.
Bound in Battle 0 The Favored and those Bonded with them are better able to fight together. Their tactics and movements flow almost seamlessly with little-to-no spoken communication. The Bond passes insights and slight thoughts between those Bonded while in combat together.
