[Endor] First Strike

After lapis made contact with the land spawn, Rend set out to dispatch who ever continued to resist. Lapis felt he would just get in the way so he sat idle incase his comrade requested assistance. while it wasn’t the most physically daunting position it was still exhausting to wait while someone else was in mortal danger. All lapis could really do was tread water and make a silent prayer to the leviathans of the deep to watch over them.

It wasn’t long before the wait became to much for Lapis and he looked for alternative ways to help. He recalled seeing hunters dress their wounds by wrapping them in sea weed, and there was always plenty of that to be found. Lapis swam to a patch of swaying strands of sea weed and took a hand full of the leaves. He quickly swam back and began tying the ends together to increase their length. Lapis may not have been the best fighter but his nimble hands were able to create tight knots without tearing the delicate material he was working with. Working on this project kept his mind of the occasional crashing and banging he heard from the hull of the boat. It was almost like a form of mediation, that kept his mind focused and on task. The mer craftsman continued to add more links to the wrap until Rend swam back victorious.

Lapis was glad to hear that at least one of them Land span had made the right choice but he would have liked more but it would also make things more completed.
“Take this and use it to treat your wounds, while I swim this wretched thing back to shore.” Lapis placed a small bundle of the tied seaweed wrap in Rends blood stained hands with a gentle nod. He gave Rend a mild dolphin smile of gratitude before swimming up to greet the trembling human he would be saving.

Lapis popped his head up over top the ledge boats ledge and spotted the sobbing human. “I’m hear to Swim you to shore, this ship is ours now”
It was hard for Lapis not to feel pity for the sad shivering creature but he was still the enemy and Lapis knew he couldn’t forget that simple fact. The man was understandably hesitant to approach the edge of the boat, assuming it was some kind of ruse.
“Come now or I’ll let my friend with the teeth have you.” Lapis barked the order while sending a pulse of anger into the land spawns feeble mind. The man shook in fear and quickly stumbled over to the the mer, crying even harder now.
“Jump in the water or I can’t swim you back to shore” Lapis was losing patience quickly but knew it would be incredibly dishonourable to change his mind now. The man was practically choking on air and had to take a deep breath to calm himself before making his leap of faith. Lapis grabbed hold of the Man’s arm and forcefully dragged him though the water, not caring in the slightest for the safety of his passenger. Not being the best swimmer in the seas, lapis was finding it hard to swim with such a heavy encumbrance. It was tiring and painful but he pushed through it, talking breaks to catch his breath and hoist the man up for air. By the time he had gotten closer to the shore the man had fallen unconscious from lack of air. Lapis probed the man on to some stones and riffled through the mans pockets, finding next to nothing of value. Lapis swiped the coin purse purse having from the mans belt, it was rather light and likely to be free of actual coin but the Mer felt entitled to it none the less.

The journey back was much quicker without the added weight and Lapis was back to greet his comrade soon enough.
“How is your wound? did the seaweed help at all?” Lapis wasn’t really a healer but he wanted to be useful after feeling like he was more of a hindrance during the attack.

“When you're ready we can look over what these land spawn were protecting.”

[Endor] First Strike

Rend accepted the seaweed wrap with a quick surge of gratitude and some small amount of puzzlement that he tried to keep out of his sending. While others of his birth tribe had surely tended to each others wounds, Rend had been left largely on his own. He was puzzled by Lapis' concern and he was puzzled by what he was meant to do with the artfully tied seaweed.

Still, for all that he was extremely single minded, he wasn't actually stupid. As Lapis started his dealings with the human, Rend tentatively wrapped the makeshift bandage around his left arm where the spear had gouged his flesh. It took several tries of holding one end of the bandage under his armpit while wrapping it and trying to catch and hold it with itself on the next wrap before he had it partially secured and could wrap it several more times around, binding the wound at least semi-effectively. Rend was more concerned about stopping blood than scars or the like. In fact had he stopped to think about it, he would have been largely in favour of scars and anything else to make him more fearsome looking.

Mer tended to stop bleeding quicker than most races, their skins producing a slime that didn't really aid in healing, but did seal the wound. Rend produced this slime slower than many. It was a trade off. Some had softer skin but greater slime production. Rend skin was actual placoid scales almost everywhere, and so was tougher, but slower to slime. This was necessary, since scabs did not form underwater, and many of the most fearsome predators could track even a tiny particle of blood in the water.

The tying off also gave him some trouble and he bared his teeth in frustration. He very nearly ripped the entire thing off and tossed it aside in a sulk, but persevering did manage to secure it, if clumsily and with a rather unsightly knot. This done he glanced down at the stub of the crossbow bolt still protruding from his tail. It was starting to bother him, but he decided to leave it. It wasn't bleeding any longer, that was good enough. The other scrapes and bruises he'd ignore until they went away.

By now Lapis was a fair distance away. Showing a surprising amount of consideration for the other in having waited this long, Rend ripped into one of the carcasses and began feeding. Perhaps Mer had once been human, but they weren't any longer, and Rend did not see what he did as cannibalism. There was a handy source of protein, he'd expended a lot of energy and now needed more to heal, so he took advantage of the protein.

When he'd eaten his fill, he noted that the predators were slowly arriving. Since Lapis would be back and want to go through the ship to see what could be scavenged, he decided to move the corpses a little bit away. Moving them was easier for him than what Lapis was going for, he didn't need to worry about keeping them alive. He grabbed a limb and swam, dragging them with him. It was slower than he'd have gone otherwise, but he only dragged them perhaps five bits away. It took him four trips to move them all, including the corpses that had been up on the still floating hull. As he dropped the last two corpses he saw some larger sharks arriving. Roughly the same size as him, so with luck they'd not try anything, particularly with an easier source of food that wouldn't fight back.

Returning to the wreck he circled it, keeping an eye out for anyone or thing that wanted to challenge his claim. In some ways Rend was more paranoid and on edge now than he had been during the attack. Normally he would have been gone by now. Strike and leave. It was with some relief that he saw Lapis returning.

"Better, stopped the bleeding."

Terse, but accompanied again with gratitude and a awareness that to bleed too long put you at great risk. Lapis' actions had put him out of immediate danger. Rend was aware of this, and comfortable with the other also being aware. In some ways he was proud. He'd left his tribe for Pride. He hated the other races and the Immortals for Pride. But it was pride in reaction to pain he felt. He was hurt and so he rejected and went his own way. To those who gave him no reason to push them away, he was decidedly unpretentious.

He nodded in acknowledgement of the others words. He couldn't imagine what they would have that he might want, but if Lapis wanted their things that was fine. Perhaps if he'd still been with a tribe he'd have stolen their weapons. Worked metal was always of use. But he was not. He had his own weapons. No point in too many, they would slow him and get in the way.

Lapis took a moment to look over how Rend dressed his wounds. The way he had wrapped his arm was done well, especially considering that he did it himself. The arrow still imbedded in his tail concerned Lapis but he was glad it was there, even lapis knew it was best to have a healer take that out.
“Careful with that until we can get a healer to look at it.” Lapis directed his telepathic message towards the arrow to make his warning clear. Though as soon as he said it he felt a little silly, since it was probably obvious to a warrior like Rend.

Lapis had a cut from when the arrow grazed him but Lapis’s skin produced quite a bit of natural slime that sealed his insignificant wound only moments after happening. It wouldn’t matter ether way, Lapis was more focused oh his partners wounds to worry about his own. The dolphin mer felt guilty that his weak heart had gotten in the way and that Rend had to do most of the work on his own because of it.

After he was done fussing over Rends condition, Lapis held his spear in hand and began to swim up to the still floating ship portion.
“I don’t like going above land so this is going to have to come down.”
With that statement, Lapis thrush his spear at the hull to pierce it. It was strong wood so it wasn’t about to break with out a fight but there also wasn’t the sense of urgency there was earlier. He could take his time to chip away at it with out worrying trying to match the boats speed or worry about the passengers on board. Soon enough there was a breach in the hull that was large enough to send it on its way.

“Now towards the other one, while we wait for this one to fall”

The arrival of predators to the scene was a concern to say the lest, thankfully Rend had been clever enough to push the bodies to the side. It still wasn’t safe but the oceans never were, they would have to be careful not to get in the way of the sharks feeding frenzy.

Lapis started his decent into the darkened water towards where the other part of the wreck fell. There was a few moments when a shark or two seemed to swim closer and lapis readied his spear to retaliate. He breathed a sigh of relief when they continued on their way like lapis wasn’t even there.

The ship wreckage had fallen into a bed of brightly coloured coral, the dust from the crash had settled and the fish had started to swim around it like it was part of the landscape. The boat had definitely taken a hit but Lapis was certain there was still something to salvage. He headed toward the door of the storage area but it was jammed from the crash, thankfully Lapis had his trusty spear to jam it open. He weaved it threw the crack of the door and pushed the staff down. It popped open quickly enough, and he swam in. There was a few cots, a weapons rack that had fallen into disarray and a desk that had fallen over. Lapis started with the desk and spotting a water logged sack filled with goods propped next to it immediately. There was more that had bee scattered around the room and he stopped to group them together before opening them. He pulled the one first open and to his dismay found food supplies, he tossed it aside and checked the second which was also food. It was luxury food but Lapis had no need for it.

There was only two more bags left and they were more than likely to be more of the land folks awful food. Lapis was right about the third one but the last was filled with bolts of fabric, it wasn’t much but at least Lapis could use it for some of his crafts.

“Not much in here, unless you want weapons” Lapis looked the weapons over but didn’t find any that stuck out to him. Just run of the mill spears and swords with nothing even remotely exotic about them.

Assent from Rend in regards to the arrow. Not that he knew any healers so likely it simply wouldn't be looked at. He probably wouldn't die. And if he did it wouldn't be a problem any more either so that was fine. While still puzzled by it, Rend rather enjoyed the others concern. It was a novel experience for him. His first tribe would likely have been glad if he'd died during a hunt or attack. He'd pushed on through with sheer aggression and bloody-mindedness, coming out on top again and again.

He watched with some interest as Lapis brought down the other hull. He'd assumed with as keen for land treasures as Lapis seemed, that he would be as comfortable as any Tylon could get, which granted wasn't very, to be above water and rifling through their things. Apparently not. Well, perhaps that was good. He'd be more at risk and harder to defend out of the water. In this instance Rend knew the vessel was empty and safe, but that might not be the case in the future, so all the better if it did not happen often.

He was more than half-hearted in his search of the wreck. He looked blankly at it and swam around and through. Again, his true attention was turned outward. Watching the sharks. Watching for anything else that might approach. The few sharks that came too close, checking to ensure there was no missed corpses here, for the blood lingered in the water, barely there, but still enough for them to find their movements were mirrored by Rend who would absolutely tangle with a shark if forced. From the way Lapis held his spear, he too was wary. They moved off without any issue however. When one of them came back a few moments later as Lapis entered the wreck and moved to the storage area, Rend mock charged it, sending it away. He was not as large as some of the oceans sharks, but he was bigger than many of these, and in the shark kingdom, the largest ruled. Besides, why would they fight when food was just waiting to be devoured a little farther away.

Rend turned in the water, moving back to where he could see Lapis within the wreck. He glanced briefly at the weapons he could see.

"No."

Was the answer. With two knives, his hooks, a harpoon launcher that he'd hidden away elsewhere rather than dragging it with him and his polearm, Rend felt more than equipped. Most of the time he depended upon his teeth and claws anyway.

By now the other hull had started to sink properly, one end still poking up out of the water slightly, but the majority of it having sunk beneath. Something slipped through the breach Lapis had caused in the hull, drifting swiftly down towards the ocean floor. A flick of his tail and Rend was after it, curiosity briefly piqued. Dark eyes studied it as it fell. Perhaps as long as his full hand, as wide as his palm and as deep as the largest joint of his thumb. It was a wooden box. Plain but well made. Reaching out Rend caught it, turning it over in his hands. He went to open it and found it locked.

Unbeknownst to him the key was now in the stomach of a Porbeagle shark that has eaten it along with about a quarter of it's prior owner. For a moment the familiar and ever present rage that always seemed to be waiting just a breath away threatened to rise. Visions of destroying it, of letting his saw like teeth do their work once more, reducing it to splinters and then casting it into the depths to be lost for all time.

From the corner of his eye, he saw the intricately knotted seaweed wrap that covered his shoulder. The rage subsided, for the moment. He returned to Lapis, thrusting the box at the other Mer.
Here.
I thought I'd leave it up to whoever grades our thread to decide what's inside!

Lapis could solve the mystery of what was within at his leisure. For now Rend was ridding himself of something that frustrated him and expressing gratitude. Of course the box might be empty, but who knew what sorts of things Lapis would qualify as worth having anyway? His attention turned outwards again and he continued his restless patrolling.

Rends response to Lapis’s question about the weapons was very matter of fact and a little distant. Lapis looked back at him and could see that the shark mer was busy keeping a watch full eye on the sharks. Lapis couldn’t help but pause when he noticed how stoic Rend looked, only turning away when they met each others gaze. It was doubtful that Rend would care that Lapis was looking at him but it made the dolphin a little embarrassed. Lapis didn’t want the other to mer to think he was strange or that he didn’t trust the him.

Lapis tied the cloth around tail moved on towards the other ship, to see what it held. He wasn’t sure why but the dolphin Mer had trouble looking his friend in the eye as he swam over to the new wreckage. When Rend thrust a box at him, It startled lapis more than it probably should have.
“Thank you”
Okay I’ll keep it vague

Lapis promptly answered, his message carried a touch of anxiety that was too light a sensation to be read as true fear. A smile formed on Lapis’s face but he looked away again when he noticed himself looking at Rend too long. Lapis didn’t know why he was acting so strangely, it wasn’t a problem the dolphin had really encountered around anyone else.

Rend went back to patrolling and lapis perplexed over the new perplexing gift in his hands. There wasn’t a key for the box so lapis spam over to the pointiest rock, placed his spear down and began to aggressively bash the chest against it. After a few strikes he could feel the hinges loosening but he stopped when he saw a shark turn towards the thrashing movement. Lapis tucked it under his left arm with his spear in the other as he swam away before the shark investigate further.

The other ship was in much better shape and the door was broken open by the pressure of the water so he could swim right in with out a struggle. The other part of the ship was set up similarly to the last one but instead of sacks there was a small assortment of chests. None of them were very big but they were to carry something more valuable than food at the very least. The only problem was that they all required keys, and they were sure to ether be lost or in the belly of the circling sharks.

“All the chests need keys”
Lapis called out to Rend with a sliver of disappointment. “Do you happen to see any out there?”
It felt sill

Rend did not understand the emotions his new companion was feeling, so he ignored them. Putting them down to concern over their situation. Justifiable. Though he'd been an asset and handled himself well, Rend did not think Lapis was as much of a predator as he was. He glanced at his bandage once more. He was a creator. Rend did not create anything. He destroyed. Eyes travelled down to his own hands. Thick, taloned. These were not hands that were made to build.

Good.

What was worth building in this world? When your creator hated you? When your own kind hated you? When you were reviled everywhere? What was worth building? What legacy could be left, should be left, by a life like that? His legacy would be fear and blood. That was what he would leave upon the world. His mark would be a wound, and it would be just as raw and pained as he was.

But. But if Lapis felt differently. If the hate had not settled so deeply onto him. If he hoped. If he wished to create. Well perhaps that was good too. And Immortals have mercy on anyone who threatened that hope, because Rend certainly would not.

It was this decision that prompted the immediate reaction to the disappointment colouring Lapis thoughts. Of course he saw no keys, and even if he looked he was unlikely to find any. But Lapis was disappointed because he could not get into the chests. So Rend had to get into the chests. Well that was his department was it not? Destruction. Just purposeful, aimed. Destroy the chests so Lapis could have whatever was within. Turning he entered the wreck, examining the offending containers.

Clawed talons confirmed what Lapis had said, the chests were well and truly locked, and strong as his arms were, he would not be prying them open. Think, focus. Use intellect rather than rage. He examined the lock. Perhaps one with more knowledge than he of such things could pick the lock, but that was beyond him. He glowered down at the chest. Circling it, he examined the back. Here perhaps was opportunity.

Again, this was not something Rend had much experience with. Chests and the opening of them. Locks. Hinges. None of these were things he had encountered more than a handful of times. But the understanding of where a thing was weak, of where it could be taken apart.. He ran a thumb over the exposed hinges. He drew one of his hooks and placed its point where the metal of the hinge met wood. his other hand grabbed his dagger, and he brought it hilt first down onto the arc of the hook, driving it down between the metal and wood. Again he hit it, and again, each centimetre hard won against strong stubborn wood. When he felt it was in far enough he wrenched on it, using the hook like a makeshift crowbar.

He bared his teeth at the defiant wood, and bore down harder. With a splintering of wood, the metal parted ways from the wood. Rend turned his attention to the hinge on the other side of the chest, as he would do for the other few chests.

"There."

Task accomplished, no reason to be disappointed now. There had been an obstacle, a problem, and he had removed it. Of course he had. What sort of Mer did not look out for his tribemates? That was what Lapis was after all. Perhaps the other Mer had other ideas, but in the course of this singular attack, Rend had made up his mind about Lapis and that was that. It was communicated in his stilted sending as well. Acceptance and protectiveness. No affection, because this was not a concept that Rend understood, but Lapis was now numbered as one of his.

A tribe of two was not much of a tribe, but when it had been a tribe of one before..

This, Rend thought, dark eyes taking in the sunken ship, the still circling sharks and the other Tylon, had been a good day.
