The world is cruel. Life is unforgiving. War, famine, poverty... The number of misfortunes that can occur are nearly endless, but for whatever reason life keeps going on. Sometimes it seems pointless, or perhaps foolish. What point is there in just existing to see welcome death to your door? There must be something more, beyond the awful truths created by tyrants and careless Immortals. If there isn't... Maybe the world should just be shattered and then remade.

Her hair was always unruly, black as raven feathers and nearly as untamable as the wilds themselves. Locks fall to just past her shoulders, curling slightly at the end and thick and tangled looking even if she brushes it with all her vigor. Brown eyes circled by dark marks of sleepless nights look around in tired stupor as she forces a smile on a face that is weary beyond her years. Evalin could be described most accurately as very plain, neither too pretty nor too ugly, too tall or too short, too slim or too big. Often she wears clothing of muted colors, browns and grays of common quality that don't distinguish her in the slightest. There are no obvious blemishes on her face or neck, but often a number of bruises or even scars can be found on other parts of her body which she would write off as her own clumsiness.
Personality
More often than not Evalin is quiet and withdrawn, offering her thoughts and opinions only when she believes it is truly necessary. To the world she tries to play the part of the uninteresting, simple minded barmaid, and in the process she has bottled up much of her personality deep into her being. While not soft spoken she does keep her true thoughts and feelings to herself, hiding behind a smile and fake enthusiasm whenever she can. She isn't intentionally deceptive of course, and at times Evalin even believes her own lies, that she is normal, that she cares.
Evalin is an inherently selfish person, either by birth or by making she cannot be sure. Pretending to care, to see to the well being of others is an almost unconscious mental defense to what she really knows herself to be. Through her life Evalin has come to believe, to understand that life is cruel and the world is unfair and unjust. People are born to die, the weak suffer under the strong, Immortals use Mortals. In a world like that it makes no sense to grow attached to anything, to anyone. She tries to copy the people around her, but the truth is still unavoidable. Evalin doesn't care for anyone other than herself, and despite her actions or all her efforts she cannot change that. No one in the world really cares about others. Just like her they are just pretending, and if given the chance they would use her and throw her away. That is what Evalin believes.
Its not quite anger, nor hatred. An apathy has settled over her thoughts and being. Nothing really matters, not with the way the world is right now. Deep down she wishes it would change. Wishes she could change it herself. Maybe if the world just... disappeared. Maybe that would be better than the way things are now.

Evalin was taken from her family when she was just over a year old. From that day she was raised and nurtured within the Coven, taught by Vanessa Gray day in and day out. It wasn't a bad life necessarily. She was clothed and fed at the very least. Vanessa wasn't a kind or caring guardian, but she gave Evalin the necessities. Evalin never complained. That was beaten out of her early. She didn't quite understand it, but it felt like Vanessa disliked her for just being alive. Every time she looked at Evalin her eyes would harden, the crease in her brown deepen as if what she were looking at irritated her to the very core. Still, it wasn't so bad.
Evalin didn't play with children when she was younger. Instead she was kept busy, performing chores and studying a lesson. There were other children in the Coven though, from time to time she would see them. The Orphaned they were called, taken at a young age and indoctrinated into the beliefs and practices of the Coven. All of them knew this, but when you have never known any other way of life it is hard to view it as bad. If she were honest with herself Evalin did not really dislike her life, rather she felt nothing towards it at all. Even when Vanessa beat her, or cursed her, called her names and told her how useless she was. That was just how it was. There was nothing she could do.
Every day she did her best to study everything, to understand it perfectly to avoid being disciplined for her stupidity. Magic was just something she had to learn, to make herself useful to Vanessa. Over and over again she was told that if she could not master this or that, she would be killed. Evalin was expendable. At the age of 7 she finally grasped this simple concept. Her life was meaningless if she did not make herself useful. No life had meaning if it was not useful to someone. That was just how the world was. It was cruel.
When she turned 10 Evalin was given her first task as a member of the Coven. She was provided an Orphan just like herself, one who failed to prove her usefulness Vanessa had explained. Evalin knew the girl. They had sat next to each other at several of the Coven meetings. She was nice, but not very smart. That night Evalin killed and raised her first undead that wasn't a small rodent or snake, but despite that she couldn't feel anything about it. Vanessa actually praised her. She supposed that was good.
Her teenage years were spent further mastering skills which aided her master. She did everything that needed to be done. Cleaning their small hut, sewing damaged robes, collecting herbs and other ingredients for her master. Once on one of her scavenging trips Evalin met a hunter, a boy named Elija. Evalin liked him. He spoke softly, and smiled brightly as he talked. For several trials they would meet near the river where they would simply talk for a time. Elija talked about his family, the places he had visited with his father, his younger brother and their pet dog. It was perhaps the happiest Evalin had ever been in her life, but life wasn't fair. Her master soon found out about these meetings. One day Elija just stopped coming. Vanessa later disciplined Evalin harshly for her actions. She told Evalin that men especially could never be trusted, and she was to never grow close to one again. While cleaning that evening Evalin found a single button carved from wood, similar to the ones on Elija's shirt. She never asked about it, but inside Evalin knew what had happened.
Not long after this Evalin and her master moved to Andaris. Though she never directly said why, Vanessa eluded to this being an order from someone above her. Like a good student Evalin didn't ask. In the city was when Evalin got her first true taste of what freedom must be like. She was allowed to find work of her own, so long as she completed her lessons in the evening. Thus she did so, working as a barmaid at Ye Olde Inn. Her Master seemed to settle somewhat after this move, withdrawing more and more into her own studies and research, preparing for something that she never told Evalin about. That was fine, however. Evalin was content with things as they were. This is all she had ever known after all.

Vanessa was born to a well off family in Venora, gifted with loving parents and friends she appreciated. Her life was a good one, filled with happiness and ease. She even found a man she loved and was set to marry him. Life for her was, for the most part, perfect. It changed however when just a few short weeks before the wedding her fiance betrayed their love with an old friend. Heart broken, lonely, Vanessa ran from her life, from her family, from everything and every one. She swore off love in its entirety, friendship she cast away, believing that she could never trust anyone again.
She lived on her own for a time, selling all she had both belongings and body, doing anything she had to to get by. Dignity and pride were pointless to her, and she easily cast both aside to simply keep living. There was nothing else for her. The Coven found her in early winter, and accepted her in their fold. They fed on her despair, put her under their thrawl and made her to be another tool for their plans. As it turns out, however, Vanessa had a talent for what they taught. She latched onto this new distraction, this thing that let her abandon what was left of her humanity and forget the heartache that life brought. In time she rose to prominence, eventually made into a Lich herself.
After she obtained this new power and immortality Vanessa returned to Venora. Her once fiance had married the woman he had betrayed her for, and for vengeance she stole their year old child. Her pans were not complete, however, and she swore to return to further exact her revenge against the man who crushed her heart.
