The Cold That Never Left (Open)

3rd of Vhalar, Arc 718

Rose angled the trimming shears to clip another leaf of peppermint that she tugged gently away from the stem. The pungent scent of the herb wafted around her as she knelt down to better access the next stem. Her favorite old dress had been ruined two seasons ago when she had assisted in the birth of Qit’ria’s child so the young healer had gone to a local tailor that morning to get outfitted in new pair of leather breeches, a new green shirt, matching cotton overdress that went to her knees and a set of leather bracers and armor to go underneath her clothes. She wanted something that was both lady-like and sensible and this had fit the bill.

Rose had never really worn any kind of armor before but the light leather corset and bracers made her feel just a bit more comfortable when she went into the forest to gather plants. Her time with Ti’niva had taught her that there were many dangers beneath the shadows of the Makubwa Lori. That reality was not lost on Rose.

The second sprig came away into her grasp and Rose quickly pulled the leaves away and deposited them into the bag that hung at her hip where a bundle of mint was already stored. She stood, taking a moment to grab a nearby watering can and giving the plants a bit of a drink in return for providing her with their leaves. She tried not to overwater them. The healer had found that plants often did best with a light watering rather than attempting to drown them. Last season she had nearly destroyed half the Medicine House’s garden by being a little to generous in her watering.

Rose may her way up a nearby ladder that led to the back entrance of the Olọravu Slosneppe. After making her way through the door, she emerged into a small room where various herbs were drying on hooks and others were waiting in pots to be ground into medicine or teas. She dumped the load of mint into a waiting basket to dry before grabbing a small jar of pre-prepared mint tea along with a jar of honey.

She was visiting a patient today in her home. It was a little girl who seemed to be constantly plagued with colds and coughs no matter the season. A little mint tea would hopefully give her some relief from the symtoms. She also took pouch of ground ginger and feverfew. After the incident with the children getting sick in Ashan, and meeting the Avriel Noah, Rose had started mixing ginger with the bitter fever reducing herb to help with the flavor.

Tucking the tea and ginger/feverfew mixture away in her bag Rose headed out of the medicine house to meet with the paitent's mother Hanni in Desnind proper.

It took a half a break to manage to find the home of the woman and her daughter but after asking for directions for a few passing Sevir the healer was directed to the home of Hanni. It was a modest tree-house, as all Sev’ryn abodes were and it was situated high in a tall oak. Rose knocked softly on the door before it was cracked open.

Hanni was a middle aged woman with dark skin, warm amber eyes and black hair that was braided tightly to her neck. She inspected Rose with a critical eye, glancing at her cloak before recognizing her profession.

"Onitẹsiwaju, awt ke’u tọ tä ise agbese wajen ? "(Hello, are you here to help, healer?)

Rose nodded, "Yes, wajen ise agbese" (healer help) she added with a soft smile. Hanni allowed the wooden door to creak open to reveal the innards of the tree-house.

Inside there was a large room where a young girl, no older than seven lay on a low bed. She was sitting up and seemed bright and attentive aiside from a cough that escape her throat from time to time.

Rose’s green hoodless cloak marking her as a member of the Order of Adunih fluttered behind her as she slipped into the room and went to the child's bedside.

Re: The Cold That Never Left (Open)

Hanni’s daughter continued to hack away, the cough coming from her chest in barking gasps before it finally relented, allowing the young girl to look up at their visitor.

Rose trundled into the den where the child was laying, setting her pack on a table before kneeling down next to the girl. Behind Rose, Hanni closed the door before moving to the side to settle on a cushion at the foot of the pallet her daughter way laying on.

“Diuv ke’u ise agbese Ileri?(Can you help)” The older woman asked as the lines on her face creased gently with concern.

“I’m fine Ọwọpọ (Mother.)" The girl replied irritably before bending over with a short cough. It was immediately obvious that the girl spoke Common with far more ease than her mother. She was practically fluent which was a relief for Rose in particular. It was at that moment that the healer also realized that the child was not a full blooded Sev’ryn, she was a mixed blood much like Rose. Likely she had a human father going by her much paler skin and dirty blonde hair.

“I’m Rose.” The redhead said politely, reaching out her hand to the child.

“Vey’rie.” The girl replied with a weak smile, meeting the handshake with her pale delicate fingers.

“You came all this way for nothing, it’s just a cold.” Vey’rie added with an irritated snort as she released Rose’s hand. Hanni’s eyes flared and she began to object in Xanthean that this cold has lasted for weeks and showed no signs of abating. Her daughter waved her off dismissively, and before an argument could ensue Rose pressed the packets of dried herbs and tea into Hanni’s hands.

“Ohunkohun ibon?” (Go make?) The halfblood suggested, practically shoving the tea and packet of powdered ginger into the other woman’s hands. She needed to seperate them so she could get to the bottom of this. Half the battle of performing medicine was getting past the personal issues between patients and their caretakers. Many patients would be cagey about information when around their family, but would open up when given time away from them.

Hanni grew quiet before nodding, she muttered something else in Xanthean that Rose couldn’t quite pick up before standing and heading toward what had to be the kitchen.

Once they were alone, Rose began checking Vey’s vitals. Pressing the back of her hands against the child’s cheeks and forehead before placing her index fingers firmly on her wrist to ensure that her pulse was even and regular.

What was surprising was that she had no fever, and her pulse was slightly erratic. The young doctor found herself wrinkling her nose in confusion. Vey looked at Rose critically as if she was trying to figure out if Rose was some sort of clueless novice or a healer worth all this poking and prodding. Noticing the wheels turning in the child’s head Rose tried to turn the conversation toward something that would keep the girl occupied while she tried to work out what was wrong with her.

“You speak Common really well, but your mum can barely understand it. Someone must have taught you.” The amber eyed woman commented while she opened up her pack and began riffling around it’s contents.

A twitch of a smile played at the corner of Vey’rie’s lips before she responded. “My father, he taught me when I was little. He wasn’t from here. Mum met him when she was working at the docks.” The mixed blooded child smiled wistfully.

“He used to bring me sweets from his trips, then one trial he never came back.”

Rose looked up from her pack and her eyes seemed to focus on her paitent more clearly for the first time. She looked at her, catching the subtle appearance of dark rings around her eyes, and a sickly paleness to her skin. It was subtle but there.

The irregular heartbeat, the lack of a fever paired with sallow skin and rings around the eyes were pointing to something she didn’t even want to consider.

Vey was being poisoned.

The cough could be a symptom of problems with her lungs, although they could just as easily by a sign of allergies.

“What happened to him?” Rose asked as calmly as possible while she continued to examine Vey’s thin shadowed face for clues. Surely she was wrong, why would anyone posion a pre-teen girl?

“Mum always said that he was lost at sea but Uncle Mu’gevi says that he just left us. He never did like him.” she added with a frown as she pulled her knees up so she could rest her chin on them.

Rose’s eyes flared slightly as the puzzle pieces slowly fell into place. At that moment Hanni returned with a warm kettle of tea that smelled heavily of mint and ginger.

“Does your uncle visit often?” The healer asked, her voice squeaking a little more than she would have liked.

“Every couple trials. He likes to visit and sometimes brings something for dinner.” The girl replied blithely before releasing a few rather wet coughs.

The hair on the back of Rose’s neck prickled. Maybe this was crazy and she was leaping to conclusions. Maybe all this was, was a bad case of the allergies. Though that didn’t explain the other symptoms. There was only one way to be sure and that was to get Vey out of this place and in isolation at the Medicine House.

Hanni took a seat and began pouring a cup of tea for her daughter, humming softly to herself. Rose came to her feet.

“I think the best course would be to have you stay a few trials at the Medicine House. We can make you more comfortable there and ensure that nothing in your environment is causing this.” The amber eyed healer spoke gently, placing a hand on Vey’rie’s small shoulder.

“But it’s just a cold…” The child countered while her mother looked on in confusion.

“You need to do this.” The green cloaked woman replied more firmly, “Please Vey’rie. Tell your mother and ask her to put together some clothes for you to take with you. I’ll be with you every step of the way. You’ll be home before you know it.” The woman added with her best attempt at a comforting smile.

Vey and her mother eventually gave in and Rose accompanied the pair to Desnind’s Medicine House. Over the course of the next few trials Vey’rie improved, either due to the palliative medicines given to her or because she was no longer being poisoned.

There was no way to know the real truth of the matter, but all Rose knew was that her patient regained her strength and her cough finally abated. Were her symptoms the result of poison or from troublesome cold?

Rose was never quite sure of the answer to that question. But that didn’t stop her from telling Hanni to make sure that they no longer let Uncle Mu’gevi around their food and drink. The woman hadn’t quite taken the suggestion well, but Rose had seen the glimmer of suspicion in Hanni’s eyes when she spoke Mu’gevi’s name.

While colds and infections can do their damage, there’s nothing quite as dangerous as bad blood between loved ones.

Rose

Overview

So good to see you playing Rose - and what a clever story! I truly enjoyed reading it. I think it was the uncle!!!

Points

XP: 10 (not for magic)

Loot

As a thank you for helping her daughter, Hanni gifts Rose a "medicine chest". It is a delicately carved wooden cabinet with well over a dozen tiny drawers for storing herbs and tinctures. The top of it also opens up into a storage compartment. It isn't entirely portable, but could be carried. It's of masterwork quality.

Furthermore, Rose's reputation as a healer has increased in Desnind.
! Message from: Follow up Quest
It's a juggling act, trying to merge the traditions of the Medicine House with the "new" teachings brought by the Order of the Adunih. Can Rose help? Certainly, after her careful handling of the Hanni situation, she's seen as someone that can. Care to try?
