Stronghold of education and learning, this fortress is in one of the coldest areas of Idalos and home to many knowledge seekers in a variety of disciplines. However, unknown to most, below the city are those who suffer for the sake of science. While all are welcome, not everyone will be treated as they expect.

Back to Basics

Location: The Facility for Retrospective Analysis - Fifth Floor - Isen’s Laboratory
Date: 78th Trial of Ymiden of the 718th Arc

With a soft knock at the wooden door, which served as the entrance to workroom that Isen now called his own, the researcher closed his notebook. Rising from his dark walnut desk that was housed in the small office, where he did most of his writing and read, that attached to laboratory. Placing the notebook into one of the drawers as to help secure from wandering or prying eyes of his fellows researchers. Moving from his desk in the corner of his office and into the main part of the work space. Making his way into the antechamber where the door was located. Opening the door, the Eidisi Mage was met with the site of a body cart and another one of Yvithia’s creations pushing it. Moving aside, Isen kept the door open to allow the assistant to push the subject into the room. “Just place the subject on the table. Was this one terminated just prior to being brought down? As per my request.” the necromancer asked the assistant as he closed the door behind the Eidisi. “Yes Researcher Fydar. This one was terminated approximately twenty to thirty Bits before being brought down. As per your request form.” The cart pusher advised the researcher. “Very well.. Once you are done with your task. Let yourself out and secure the door,” the scholar instructed. The helper nodded his head in acknowledgement. Then he moved the cart and it’s cargo out of the antechamber, further into the workroom to complete his task.

Isen moved into the storage area of his laboratory to gather the required tools. And to prepare himself for his dissection of the day. Before the arrival of his cadaver, he had been reviewing his notes he had written over the past few seasons worth of experiments. When each of these tests had ended in failure on the part of the researcher. He began to reexamine everything. Nothing he did changed the outcome. Not of charge changes in the experiment's variables. Not the changes in the various techniques he employed. Not even drastic changes to his overall methods. Each changed did bring him any closer to success. This was something that infuriated Isen. He was an Eidisi, they did not fail. They did not leave something unknown and unlearned. He wouldn’t risk one of his co-workers learning of his inability to succeed and his pride wouldn’t allow him to seek help from one of the others this early in his career. So he reflected on his past fortnight of searching as he collected his tools.

He had taken the last few dozen Trials to review everything he had ever learned and go back to the basics, rather than push through and lead to more unbearable failure. This way maybe he could find a fresh perspective to his problem. On the first couple Trials he had left the cold halls of the Facility and moved into the Academy proper, away from the constant moans of the caged subjects. He had returned to the familiar areas that he had spent some many Arcs of his youth. Spending many Breaks looking through the various texts and tomes. To review information that he had used within his studies inside the Academy or finding new information in the recent additions to the great library. As a member of the Facility, he had access to the entirety of the Academy as most believe him to be just another Eidisi student. As he compared his personal documentation and the findings of his own research compared to the published works he had found within the library, he noticed some small discrepancies within his own work. He noticed that some of the newer tomes had new or updated information from the various authors of these works.

With the new information as well as the corrected old documentation. The blue former student moved from within the populated Academy and back down into the depths of the Facility. Making his way into the archives of Facility. While not a true library, it did contain the findings, records, and synopsis of hundreds of previous studies and analysis that were conducted by the hundreds researchers before him. In his time with the FRA, he had learned that very few were following his course of study or fell into his area of expertise, something that he was proud of. As this meant there was less competition for the resources he needed or less of a chance of having to deal with someone stealing his research. Though there were a number of medical specialist within their ranks that had published their findings on some subjects. Some of the abstracts held promise such as the one titled ‘10 Obscure Functions of the Human Brain” or ‘Physical Stress Bad for Health’. But many of them would never be of use to him. As he skimmed the various sources, annotations were created on the important and valuable information that appeared with would be of use. The scientist also documented the source location for further inspection should the he need it to reconfirm something or cross examine his own findings.

As he finished gathering the required tools, he returned to the work space with his tool tray which he placed onto its designated table. As Isen gathered and donned his work apron, he moved to start today’s work in the practical after many Trials of intellectual study to hopefully solve complex issues with basic information.

Re: Back to Basics

Knowing that this process before him would take the better of a Trial.. The Eidisi set to sustain his test subject over the course of his study, along with any parts he wished to keep. He needed to safeguard it from the complex processes that come with death such has rigor mortis and rotting of the tissue. The necromancer moved his hands in front of him, almost touching the body on the table. Feeling the spark that has grown inside him with every passing day since it was lit during his initiated many Arcs ago. Pushing the ether, the fuel of magic, from within his core and through the tips of his fingers. Tracing his fingers over the deceased body on the table before him. Every place that that the mage touched, ether flowed between them. Every place that the ether touched, it seeped into the flesh of the subject. This ether, worked to preserve the flesh and tissue, the organs and bones, and beat back the process of decomposition that wanted to over take the subject of the mage’s study. This ability to preserve, that came with the necromancers arts, was one that Isen used often. It was needed to preserve the bodies within he used in his studies. It was something that he was well practiced with and knew the order to which to preserve. With the embalming effects taking place throughout the subject’s body and the ether everywhere that it needed to be. The researcher cut off the flow of his magical essence to the body beneath him. Looking over the now preserved corpse before him, he picked up his quill and leather bound notebook. Circling around the body, he began the autopsy of this body. To return to the basics of his knowledge and freshen his old skills to bring to them back anew.

Most of the subjects that found themselves within the confines of the Facility, that served the researchers as test subject in the furthering of science and discovery, came from many different backgrounds. So each subject could have many variations and differences. So he had mark the variations within the possible outcomes of his inquest to his work. He had to detail the conditions of the body. Any blemishes or disfigurements, weight and height, and the many other important details that could factor into his work. The examiner marked each of his required pieces of information. Starting with the subjects weight and height that came with its information file upon its delivery. Every scar, freckle, and mole was documented. Isen checked over the wound site that caused its death. Confirming that no more than was he requested means of termination had been done. He had read in other studies that there was some poisons in the world that could be used to make the termination of the subject easier, faster, and less painful. But the mage did not wish to risk his research for some comfort to these lesser beings. With three pages of documentation over the condition of his corpse completed. The start time of the dissection was documented and the process began. Putting the notebook and quill back on the writing lectern, which was on the opposite side of the table that held his tools. The eidisi checked to make sure the body block was in place, this wooden block was placed under the body, between the shoulder blades. It would keep cadaver chest pushed forward by flexing the neck and arching the spine upward. With the block in its proper place Isen moved to his first required tool, a small steel scalpel.

With blade in hand, Isen moved to the location, below the midpoint of the left collar bone, for the first incision . As he had done many times before this day, a cut was made from this starting point to the top point of the sternum. Moving to the same point but on the right side, another cut was made in a downward angle to complete the ‘V’. With these cuts made, one last one was needed to complete initial phase. This slit started from the bottom point of the ‘V’ and went downward on the chest to the belly button. Putting the scalpel back on the table, Isen moved to peel back the flesh from the muscle. The mage picked the blade back up and repeated the process again to pull back the muscle layer. Then again to pull back the fat and other tissue till the chest cavity was open to him, with nothing blocking the view. With the organs in the open. He used various tools including the scalpel and shears to remove the human’s larynx, esophagus, major arteries, and ligaments. These parts of flesh did not serve a purpose to his current course of study. So they were discarded into a waste basket for removal after he left for today. Taking the shears, Isen was able to cut various connecting points along the spine and bladder. Then he was able to remove all of the major organs as one piece. Placing them on a secondary examination table for further study and documentation. Before he moved to the next phase of the dissection. The necromancer returned to his lectern and documented his course of action step by step that happened during the removal of the skin, muscle, and organs along with any discoveries inside the chest cavity.

Moving back to the secondary examination table where all the organs were located. The surgeon moved to separate each one of the major organs. As he completed it the remove of the first organ, he took his scale from his side table. He used it to weigh the heart then he examined the most vital organ that pertains to his life’s work. Taking his quill, he documented the size, color, overate differences, and its weight. This continued for each organ the lungs, liver, intestines, and everything else that remained. This was the longest part of the process as it took many Breaks.

With all the vital organs documented, he choose to avoid dealing with the subject’s brain in his dissection as it didn’t matter to his current work. He moved to finish up the practical part since he would still need to write a synopsis of his discoveries with this subject. Placing all the organs, except the heart, back into the body to be cleaned up upon his leave from the laboratory. Isen took last unused item that remained on his table, a simple jar with a lid. Placing the heart into the jar, along with a water based solution to help the ‘Preserve’ influence of his magic, for later use. Storing this heart on a shelf, next to many other similar organs, he began the process of cleaning up from his Trial’s worth of work.

With all his tools washed, sterilized, and put away back into their storage area. Isen moved from the storage room to his office that housed his desk. Taking out the required forms, which the administrators of the Facility wanted filed with every study’s results, he began to write. After two breaks Isen began to stretching his cramping hand, as he began rotating his sore neck, to remove the pain that had taken place over the time spent documenting his dissection. He had to recorded his findings and completed the submission forms. With all the paperwork finished and the ink dried. He put everything in a file. Grabbing the file, he placed it near the examination table, where the now used up body remained. An assistant would deliver the file to the submittal office when they came to clean up the laboratory. With his tasks for the day completed and his mind working on new approaches to his problems. Isen grabbed his cloak and satchel, after locking his office, then walked out the door on his way to his house for the night.

Gramatically I'd strongly suggest you proofread your posts when you've finished them. There were a lot of dropped articles and correctly spelled words but in the wrong places. Unfortunately, it's all stuff that isn't caught by a spell check, but it's small and I was able to figure out what you meant to write most of the time! The major thing to keep in mind is dependent phrases and clauses aren't typically separated by commas. They can be sometimes for emphasis, but you were pretty consistent with it to the point that reading the thread was very jarring. Don't be afraid to use more commas and semi-colons! Content-wise, it was a dissection thread, so interesting enough; I'd say you overplayed his novice skills in medicine and surgery - removal of organs without any difficult or damage without knowledge or at least competency is asking for a lot. You did reference that he's done it in the past, which unfortuantely isn't a pass for overplaying your current skill level. For now, this is fine, because I'm aware the procedure is pretty straight forward, but I'd suggest doing some memories or picking up some medicine/surgery knowledge from a thread where he's observing a process and "learning" from that before you do another dissection thread. The note is long, but the only major issue is playing to your skill level, don't worry! I did like that you maintained his cold, analytical character throughout the entire thing, mechanically taking apart was "lesser being" like any self-respecting Eídisi would! And your necromancy was fairly descriptive, which I always appreciate, especially for novice level magic.
