“Some people are lost in the fire. Some people are built from it.” - Unknown

Keama, though unintentional, is comfortable keeping people at a distance. It was never in her ability to keep friends as she moved around too much as a child, therefore as an adult, she isn’t inclined to change such habits. She is neither boisterous of her talents nor proud, but quiet and perceptive, and understands that there is always something to learn. Considering herself more of a listener than a talker, or a thinker and less of a doer, Keama would not call herself wise, though some have labeled her such once before. She moves through the world cautiously and sometimes, ignorantly. Diplomacy is what she often seeks in times of trouble, having not the strength of will to raise a blade with the intention of pain or death on another. These things go against her peaceful and humble nature, but in a world where war lurks at every turn, Keama realizes some choices must be made for her survival. She is wildly passionate about things she enjoys and is quite a pleasant, approachable person during these moments. Those lucky enjoy to make a friend out of Keama will find her to be a loyal, guiding figure with a unique strength about her not commonly glimpsed in others.

Dark brown eyes with a striking gaze accompany the freckled, tanned complexion of this sev’ryn woman. Standing at an average height, her body is trimmed with muscles from arcs of dance and hunting. The only thing often lacking on her appearance is her smile, which is rarer to than a blooming flower in cylus. Keama sports long, wavy chestnut hair that is often tied back in a leather strap, and adornes rugged, loose fitting commoners clothes when she’s not in front of a crowd performing. Her costume attire consists of clothes that leave little to the imagination, jeweled and often jingly, with colorful, soft fabrics that grasp at the wind’s gentlest breeze. The sevir is made to look every bit the exotic foreigner she is, especially when she is the main dancer for shows.

Scars

Most tend not to notice it, but Keama has vague splotches of light brown tinted on her skin. These are sunburn scars left over from when she was stranded out at sea.

Keama was conceived in the heart of Desnind, shortly before her mother set out on her journey into the sea. Unplanned, the Sev’ryn mother struggled to carry her unborn child while aboard the vessel and even too, within the unknown lands she arrived at. However, in the quiet quarters of a healer’s hut in Ivorian, Keama’nya was born into the world. One would think the pair would return to Moseke’s homelands once the babe was birthed, but in fact, Tsaia had other expectations. She’d left her homelands to discover what lay in the unknown and find there, the piece of herself that had been missing all her life. Still young and unbinded by her familiar, Tsaia nurtured Keama and took her from place to place while seeking her spiritual half.

During this time, and because of travel, Tsaia became Keama’s teacher. On foot, atop horseback, or seated within a wagon, Kea was taught Xanthea speech and writing, along with broken common. When she could walk steady and talk well, she was taught how to set simple traps, the importance of hunting and survival, as well as how to sew the holes in her clothes when they formed. By the time the girl was six arcs, she could catch a handful of rabbits in a day’s time and light a fire within a couple hours.

While she missed out on long term friendships, Tsaia didn’t neglect her daughter the right to them. They would often linger in places for a few seasons if it appeared Keama had taken a liking to the groups of kids there. Rharne held a special place for the girl as it introduced to her a love for dance and entertainment that stole her away from her mother’s side several times a week. While the city had its own problems, the merriment of its citizens was much more noticeable than any other place Keama had been to. Though, at the time, she didn’t realize that might have been due to the excessive amount of alcohol they all consumed. Nevertheless, her and her fast-made friends took to practicing the dances they’d seen from passing shows or simple street performers. Sometimes, Tsaia would catch sight of her daughter’s odd flailing limbs and, while laughing at the ridiculousness of it, encouraged her time and again.

A day came once that saw Tsaia overcome by sickness, something that had lasted for an unusually long time. Her mental capacities were starting to become compromised and while she never told Keama what was wrong, it was clear that something deathly affected Tsaia. So much so that within the span of three days, they were packed and boarded on a vessel back to Desnind— a place the young girl had yet to visit in her eleven arcs of life.

Keama hated the roll of the waves, the salt of the winds, and the deep darkness of the sea. Her mother taught her to respect all life and the inevitable death that came with it, but Kea thought she could do without the ocean for one lifetime. For a while, the girl thought of the sea as an entity that might have been listening to her words of contempt. Why else would it send a storm to sink their vessel in the night and take with it, her mother? There were few survivors… Even fewer after several days passed. The two rowboats that made it over the waves without sinking that night were tied together at the ends by rope, but their passengers were slowly plucked away, if not by dehydration, then starvation. Being a child, Keama was offered food and water first, and was one of the last alive when a trade vessel found her roasted form crumbled in the boat. With nowhere else to go and no family to call her own, Keama was escorted back to Desnind and delivered to her mother’s family who were rather reluctant to take her in. All but one: her aunt, Abbana.

Abbana was a tall, sturdy woman with a strong, forward voice. At first glance, she appeared overbearing, but in truth, she was a gentle, approachable woman. In the village, she was a renowned healer and made visits to homes several times a day, some of which Keama was forced to accompany her on. It was a way for them to bond, a bridge that was slowly being built with each passing day. Keama mourned for many seasons over the loss of her mother, but with Abbana there to support her when no one else would, the pain of such loss eventually ebbed away. The young sevir started to trust her relative and eventually opened up to her about many things.

While the arcs passed, every season spent within the forests of Desnind brought on an unsettling, displaced feeling within the deepest parts of her being. Keama felt confused and ignored such emotions until agitation over simple things caused Abbana to call her out on it one day. “I feel like I don’t belong here.” Kea confessed. “They call me outsider when they think I can’t hear them.” In truth, it was much more than that. What she discovered one day from the ramblings of an elder made her blood run cold. Abbana had stepped out of the room to fetch more wood for the fire, but in that short span of time, Keama’s very existence was questioned when the secret of her father was let loose.

Degradation. Violent. A disgrace. Nonconsensual.

Could she believe such words as fact? Keama’s mother offered her stories of her father when she asked, pieced together an honorable man who died in combat many arcs ago. So why would she think any differently? However, truth and lies are offered with a heavy price— one strong enough to crack and break foundations. Conversation winding up, Keama’nya’s mention of her father bloomed tension in the air not present previously and it was then, she knew the elder spoke truth.

“I love you, as did your mother. No matter what the people may think, you will always have a home here with me.” Abbana promised, but even that wasn’t enough to brush away the icy clench around Nya’s heart.

She remained in Desnind for a few years thereafter, picking up the peoples fancy of drums and singing. Abbana even offered her lessons in medicine which Kea only followed out of respect for the woman. Remaining at arms length from everyone, there were few who she could call friends as each one was sent away, bound for a quest to find their other half. Was that what she was missing too? Why she felt so… empty?

Her body might have been rescued from the ocean, but some days, Nya felt as if her soul was still out there. Left to die like the rest of those bodies in the boats.

During the heart of Vhalar, her family elders called a meeting with Keama and questioned her of her bond with her familiar. “I have yet to find one.” She answered, watching their expressions shift into concern. “Have you had any visions? Dreams?” To this, a simple shake of her head roused murmurs next, some even questioning if she was pure-blooded to begin with. “We implore you to seek out aid with the priestess, Keama’nya. This is a path every Sev’ryn must take.” What of paths and journeys? What of quests of grandeur? What of steps taken? Why not stop? Had she stopped?

“You’re unbalanced.” The Priestess accused one afternoon when Kea finally worked up the nerve to go see her. “Such a thing deters connection. It leaves your mind unfocused. I’m sure that’s why you’re having trouble seeing what and where your familiar is.”

“How do I correct it?” She asked, but the sev’ryn elder merely sighed.

“My child, such an answer is hard to say. What troubles you? Start from there and work your way through. When acceptance and peace find you, so too will they.”

The elder was right, Nya thought. Such an answer was hard to say, but the more her mind played over the meeting, the more she realized the answers were with her all along. Keama had just ignored them, pushed them to the back of her mind to hide in the shadows there. The first step was to leave Desnind. For good. There was only Abbana and a select few who would miss her but they would understand her choice. She’d tried to grow roots here, but the soil was not to her liking and so, she had to drift. Unfortunately, that meant to the sea. The one thing she was most afraid of.

This fear was what stopped her. What she had to overcome with her own strength. It took many tries to venture out onto the docks and many more to commit to staying aboard the ships, but time and time again, Keama’s fear won out in favor of the safety of land. This was also how she met a trader by the name William Abernathy, from the faraway kingdom of Rynmere. At first, he was bemused by her anxiety, then curious. If not for his persistence when he would dock for trade in between seasons, Keama was sure she never would have worked up the courage to stay aboard. But she did, and once the line of land disappeared from the horizon, so too did her connection to Desnind, the last remnants of her mother, and the disgrace of her heritage. She would find balance in the world she knew. She would find peace in the places and people she loved. Before there was chaos. Before there was death and lies.

She would find her place in the world— and somewhere in doing that, herself.

Mother

Status: Pending Approval
Name: Tsaia Eas'ba Jasihi-Ri
Race: Sev’ryn
Date of Birth: 31 Ashan 677
Date of Death: 67 Ymiden 706
Skills: Hunting - 30, Field Craft - 30, Ranged Combat (Short Bow) - 30, Teaching - 10
Information: Tsaia was a strong yet gentle spirit and just as committed to the moral values as her Sev’ryn brethren when it came to the preservation and respect of life and nature. Before her departure from her homelands, Tsaia was raped while out with a hunting party, by a member of a rogue group of Sev’ryn who’d followed much darker paths. The man was eventually captured and, once tried by the people, was left to serve his sentence. Tsaia, though broken, decided it was for the best to undertake her journey for her familiar and promptly stole away onto a vessel, leaving behind her homelands for several years thereafter. However, it was during this voyage that the Sev’ryn came to realize she was pregnant with Keama, and while she had the thought to end such entrapment, Tsaia decide to follow her moral code and nurture the soul. It was tough, caring for something never wanted, but over time, her feelings towards the tiny creature shifted. When Keama’nya grew and started to walk and talk, that was truly when Tsaia’s love and duty for her daughter solidified and as a mother, she committed then to her offspring to protect her till her dying breath.

Tsaia was an adventurous sort— she had to be to find her familiar. Her and her daughter spent years on the road and seas, venturing from place to place and never staying longer than a season or two at most. It was only when Keama started to make friends with the locals that Tsaia would pause her search, so that her child could understand the bonds of friendship. Unfortunately, as time dwindled on, it became harder and harder for Tsaia to locate her familiar even though dreams of the creature plagued her often. Falling ill one day, an animalistic desperation overtook her enough to see her bedridden and struggling. It was only when she had enough strength to move that Tsaia packed her things and left with Keama for Desnind. She would not suffer long, however, as a few short weeks later would see the ocean claim her life and leave her daughter orphaned.

Tsaia is an average sized Sev’ryn with chestnut brown hair, deep chocolate eyes, and almond skin. Her features are sharp, cheekbones high, with a curved, feminine jawline to accentuate plush lips. Most people would say Keama is the spitting image of Tsaia, however, her mother lacks the litter of freckles sprinkled all over her daughter. Tsaia is a wise woman and tried her best to follow her logical and religious directories before her emotional ones, a habit she passed onto Keama.

Aunt

Status: Pending Approval
Name: Abbana Ceh'jari Jasihi-Ri
Race: Sev'ryn
Date of Birth: 18 Saun 680
Skills: Medicine - 30, Surgery - 30, Caregiving - 30, Teaching - 10
Information:Abbana is the younger sister to Tsaia and the Aunt / Caretaker of Keama. She appears as a tall, sturdy, hardworking woman with a matching attitude to boot, but she is known among her people as a healer— which is ironic, to say the least. Much like her sister, Abbana also sports brown hair and eyes, though her skin is a much lighter shade of tan. Nevertheless, she is an old soul of her Sev’ryn people.

Unlike the rest of her family, Abbana was the only one made aware of Keama’s existence from a letter scribed in her sister’s handwriting. So it came as no surprise to her when the girl showed up in Desnind one day, claiming to be Tsaia’s offspring and was nearly shunned for it. While the family was convinced enough to take Keama in, it was obvious they were reluctant to care for the proof of their daughter’s greatest shame. Abbana stepped in and practically stole her away from her family, to raise her niece within her own home.

It wasn’t easy, handling door to door medical visitations while trying to break a walled-off pre-teen out of her shell. Some night were disasterly awkward, while others were… quiet. Instead of leaving Keama to the silence of her quarters, Abbana dragged the girl out with her and from there, she slowly started to work away Nya’s barriers.

Overtime, Keama learned to trust and speak to her, but Abbana noticed that the girl’s presence in the village was spurring some kind of tension. She tried her best to quell such worries, though it became obvious that a day was soon to come when Nya would be ready to leave. Abbana knew Keama was afraid of boats and the ocean, and visited the docks everyday, in passing to the next housecall, to watch the girl attempt to get on a boat, only to run back to the docks.

Then, one night, Abbana came home to an empty house and although she felt loss, the tears she cried were not of sorrow, but joy. Her niece had found the strength she needed, now only time would tell if Keama would succeed in finding her place in the world.

Abbana resides in Desnind still and is a personable caretaker at heart. She's always open to conversations and doesn't mind exploring topics she has little knowledge of.

Family Friend

Status: Pending Approval
Name: Evelyn Purnell
Race: Human
Date of Birth: 663 (56)
Skills: Agriculture - 30, Animal Husbandry - 30, Animal Training - 30, Falconry - 10
Information: Evelyn Purnell is the mother of Sofia, a girl Keama use to play with when her and her mother settled in Rharne for a time. She became a single mother of two when her husband died at sea shortly into their marriage and has used her own blood, sweat, and tears to help her children grow into the fine adults they are today. She is a joker with a quick wit and humorous personality. Easy going, Evelyn tries to make the best out of most matters, but even she is only human and sometimes lets her temper fly.

The woman tended the fields most days in Keama and Sofia’s youth. While Tsaia and her daughter stayed in Rharne, Nya remembered helping out on the farm with her mother some days. Evelyn always welcomed the help and even offered food and a bed to sleep in if they became too tired to venture back into the city. Needless to say, both family became close very quickly.

Later in life, while working out in the fields, Evelyn suffered a stroke that left her memory impaired and her body, difficult to move. She is senseless now, but cared for by her daughter and some hired help while Sofia tends to the land. Evelyn is a short, thin woman with gray / blond hair and tanned, wrinkled skin from working out in the field most of her life.

Childhood Friend

Status: Pending Approval
Name: Sofia Purnell
Race: Human / Biqaj
Date of Birth: 694
Skills: Animal Husbandry - 30, Animal Training - 30, Teaching - 30, Falconry - 10
Information:Sofia, much like Keama, is a gentle yet curious girl with a desire to discover all things— even those that tended to put her in harm’s way. Short and blond with golden pink eyes, Sofia carried her thin frame in a very unlady like fashion, but given where she grew up, this wasn’t so out of the norm for most Rharne girls.

Keama and Sofia stumbled upon each other one day when both had climbed the same massive tree and spooked the other. Through happenstance, they became friends and as the bond grew stronger, their trust evolved into unbreakable loyalty. Some days, they played outside in the fields, the roads, the forests, or the city. Some days, they taught each other things— language, hunting, crafting. Sofia grew from Nya and vise versa. Soon, they became a common pair as one was not so far from the other, if only to sleep.

The day Keama left, Sofia was a mess. She felt a loss equal to that of a family member dying and remained in a depressive state for many months after. The girl hoped her Sev’ryn friend would write to her, having scrawled an address on parchment for Nya before she boarded the ship, but year later had provided nothing but faded memories of happier times.

Sofia moved onto other interests, studies, and friends. Her mother, Evelyn, encouraged her to go as far with her education as possible and so, the young girl took up a passion for animal health and husbandry. She took on an internship with the local stable master and studied animal taming and training until her mentor felt Sofia was ready to be out on her own. This lasted a short while until her mother fell with a stroke and became unable to care for herself. Since the wellbeing of her life and her mother’s life rested in her hands, Sofia decided to uproot the crops and lay down fences, barn space, and hire a few helping hands. She’d transformed the place into a sanctuary for animal care and training— something that would generate more income than crop could.

In the present time, Sofia works and resides on the land she grew up on, tending to the animals boarding there.

Troupe Member / Dance Partner

Status: Pending Approval
Name: Sonya Davi
Race: Human / Sev'ryn
Date of Birth: 693 (26)
Skills: Dance - 30, Endurance - 20, Strength - 20, Acting - 20, Singing - 10
Information: When Keama first joined Corun’s Cirque Festivus, she was unnoticed— as all newcomers were— and kept out of the airways of gossip that Sonya had an ear to. She never even knew of the Sev’ryn until one night, Sonya was forced to perform a sort of stomp routine that led her to having a sprained ankle and was later saved from a disgruntled crowd by Keama. At the time, Sonya didn’t see the woman’s actions as a rescue— having changed places with her in a split moment, under the cloak of a curtain. Instead, she took it as an insult, even more so when Keama was able to finish the routine with more fluid, precise movement than Sonya could pull off even on her best days.

After that, the whole troupe recognized Keama for a breath of a moment, which spurred Sonya’s jealousy enough to confront the Sev’ryn, but she didn’t get so far with hateful words. The conversation exchanged between the two quieted Sonya’s ire and from there, they slowly built a friendship.

Sonya is a tall, mocha skinned, half Sev'ryn that first joined the troupe when she was looking for work and a place to stay nearly five arcs ago, in Etzos. Like many others before her, the opportunity provided by the Cirque Festivus seemed too good to be true and without thinking, she signed her life away. It was only supposed to be for a year, but every time the end of her contract would come up, her gold would seem to be lacking.

Now, she considers Keama a close friend and trusted partner in the troupe, along with Joel. The three take turns looking out for the other, be it rumors, their items, or money.

Troupe Member / Dance Partner

Status: Pending Approval
Name: Joel Westry
Race: Human
Date of Birth: 692 (27)
Skills: Dance - 30, Strength - 30, Teaching - 30, Endurance - 10
Information:Joel and Keama first met during one of the troupe’s many routine rehearsals, after the man received a rather public tongue lashing from Ringmistress Victoria for dropping one of the dancers. He was assigned to help lift Keama for the acrobatic stunts, since both were pretty much near the back for the entire set, and went about clumsily lifting and dropping her several times throughout the practice. Rather than get upset with him, she waved off each of his failures with a mewl of pain, but this didn’t go unnoticed by the other troupe members. Joel was ratted out and taken off dance routines when it was found he couldn’t perform. Tension escalated when rumors of his contract’s potential termination began to cycle through the gossip airways, and with little money to pay for it, Joel was fearful he’d be quietly sold away into slavery.

Keama and her troupe partner, Sonya, decided to pull the man aside in the middle of the night and teach him the proper technique, balance, and skill of dance. This happened over the course of two seasons and as his strength grew, so too did his confidence. Soon, he was put back with the rest of the dancers after it was seen that he’d cleaned up his act. Forever indebted to the pair, Joel far exceeded their expectations as a performer and now, runs some of the rehearsals as an instructor.

Joel is an average height, dark skinned, toned individual who was born in a village just outside of Nashaki. He’s not afraid to show who he truly is and works hard to achieve his goals, no matter the effort needed. While he can be rather blunt, Joel is very perceptive of people, their intentions, and sometimes offers his opinion in matters better left alone.
