Firelit Revel

83rd of Ymiden at Midnight. Arc 718

It'd been over twenty trials since she tasted that fool's soul.

In the trials since, she'd fought against the urge to feast again. It wasn't easy. Many times, she'd pass by her fellow Yari in the dirty streets, amid the mudbrick buildings and shabby tents. Therein they milled about their business the daily rituals that comprised of an organic being's life. A strange curiosity arose to every soul that walked her streets. One that was unfamiliar to Alora before she'd ever flayed a man. This alone was sign enough that she should ignore it, suppress it.

In the trials since feeding, she'd had to let her dwelling air out. The stench of rotten eggs and dead meat lingered long after the Necromancer had helped her to clear out the remains. Like the man insisted on his essence lingering after their unorthodox marriage of souls.

It took all of her effort not to scream and flare out, light a match and let it take the town. Yet, she resisted, and so perservered.

Nevertheless, strange happenings had begun occurring all around her while at the smoking dens and taverns. Torches flared at her passing, reacting to her emotions. Flying about when she angered, guttering out when she was woebegone. Sometimes they seemed to reach for her with their fiery tendrils, caressing her leather armor and clothes. It was unsettling to say the least.

And so, after settling her business in accomplishing her company's goals for the season, she went out to the wilderness. Her purpose in Bastard's Grove was many fold, but with a few main objectives. One, to stay out of trouble while in Yaralon. It wouldn't do to accidentally burn down a grain store somewhere inadvertently. Two, to see the extent of this current condition on her magical capabilities. And three, to keep away from civilization, lest she be tempted to feed again.

So she started a bonfire in the middle of a clearing, surrounding it with rocks and stones, and filling it with ample fuel. Dried branches and kindling fallen from the surrounding vegetation.

She moved her arms with the flames, seeing the reaction those tendrils of reddish yellow as they followed her movements, almost mimicking her. Mocking her.

Soon enough, she found herself dancing along to the rhythm of their dancing tendrils. Waving her arms and spinning around with abandon. She thought she heard vague whispers from the flame. Perhaps it was in her head. Half-heard voices of times gone by, and times yet to come. She thought of things that have happened, or could have happened. Her mind then lingered on the thought of her once beloved Augiery, and the Dark Mistress of it all. What would she think of one of her creations dancing in the light of a fire?

The question brought a twinge of anger to her, and so the flames rose. Unknown to Alora, one of the licks of flame had taken to the branches of a tree above her. A flame began to spread, unknown to her still. Until a canopy took to the flames.

Still, she danced while Bastard's Grove began to burn.

The hunger grew within her with every lick of the flames that burst ever upward. The fire happily lapped at the air around as she galloped and pranced around the fire circle. Alora paid no heed to the sudden rain of fire that was hailing down from above, taking it for a feverish hallucination in the heat of the moment. It wasn't until a branch came undone from above, and hit her in the shoulder that she realized what was going on up in the canopy.

The woods were deadly quiet except for a cackling of fire all around her. She came to her senses then, and suddenly threw into a panic. This didn't help matters, as her emotions running out of control caused the flames to leap about wildly, catching fire to the nearby brush.

She screamed upward at the sky, and hurled insults as she stepped on the fire. It hit back, unsettled by her sudden turn of loyalty. Why was the fire's subject taking exception, wasn't this what she wanted?

"No, you damned flames. Die now!" She became livid at the fire's unwillingness to obey her. The old headache that had haunted her after the flaying returned with a vengeance. She would like nothing more than to throw a dozen souls onto the pyre she'd built then. She'd chop an entire village into mince meat just to douse the uncanny flames.

After a quarter of a break struggling to smother the flames, she fell to her knees, exhausted by smoke and exertions and the magic that was running out of control. She withdrew inward, looking for a feeling that had been long hidden. Mourning.

A single tear fell from her cheek as she knelt over the ground. Was this how it would end?

Another tear dripped from her cheek, and then, drops from above. However, these did not scorch like the rain she'd been experiencing the past half break. This was a moist rain, a cold rain. Sweet nectar of the heavens.

Then she remembered, it was Saun. The rains had come.

Re: Firelit Revel

And so, as the flames danced, so did the rain.

She turned on the fire that lingered in her nightmares. The long candlelit beacon that haunted every shadow in the corner of her eye. Consuming the darkness itself. She would see that flame doused.

The rains fell, sizzling on the ground with every drop. But they did not abate, Alora would not have it. Puddles formed amid the forest fire. These, she danced among, and bid to reach out, creeping into small streams, rivulets of water between the muddy earthen ground.

She performed this irrigation, manipulating water and earth alike. The fire roared and hissed at her betrayal. Alora almost thought she could hear in those sizzling hisses vows and oaths of vengeance. Too long had she cow-towed to the flame, only to neglect every other element. But not tonight. Though her head pounded with every manipulation and coaxing and communicative move of her arms and legs, she proceeded.

The water swallowed up the lights surrounding her, until all that was left was a starfield of embers. Soon enough, the embers even were drowned out, and the rain just fell on its own. They listened to no more of her suggestions, but simply watered the newly ashen ground.

She fell to the ground, exhausted and spent, having combined the use of more than one element. Fire would not forget this betrayal, but in the loss of that potent and lasting if mercurial friend, she'd found a new ally. One that could douse fire's anger, and bring darkness once more to her world.

She fell unconscious on the forest floor.

She awoke refreshed, like a desert nomad finding a fresh canteen of cool water after a long journey. She was home, in a sense, and returned to her self. The flames were doused, but even then she could feel their anger. Alora would not be left alone for long. Fire would rebel against this turn of loyalty, this desecration. She knew too well the element's wrath, having seen firsthand how it's hunger could prompt her to flay a mortal man on a whim. But that was behind her, for now.

She rose to her feet, amid the soaking ash of leaves and soil of the forest. The water caressed her skin with every movement. She tested her ability to communicate with it then, and told it to burrow deep into the earth, to eradicate the essence of flame that may linger within the soil. But then her work was done. And she would return to Yaralon renewed.

Amid the singed and soaked carnage of the last evening, she picked up a memento, a branch seared to ash, yet soaking from the water that had rained down upon it. Saun was coming, and with it the rains would follow, as they had shown last evening. Were it not for water's blessing, she may just have drowned in that deluge. As it was, the water had spared her, presumably content with it's new ally.

She liked making new friends, afterall. Who didn't?
