Riots at the Harpy

22nd of Saun, Arc 718 - Harpy Inn

Nikhael turned as he heard the clack clack of wood against wood, then smiled. The two twins had each found a stick and were playing at swords as they walked through the Earth District.

“Avast ye! Ye won’t be getting any of my booty!” Shouted Ryder as the 6-arc old jumped up onto a rock.

“Then I’ll take yer ship, and you’ll never sail home again!” Thanos shouted back and scampered up the hill to catch up with his father.

Nikhael grinned at the pair, a gold glint lighting up his otherwise deep red eyes. His two sons had inherited a similar fluctuation with the moons and they could easily been identified as a family by their eyes alone. The biqaj picked up the pace and Ryder soon joined them, huffing and puffing.

“How does a good drink sound, right about now?” Nik asked. Saun had been incredibly hot this arc and Nikhael was glad that he was able to spend most of his time out on the lake. All three of them were well tanned, having suffered through frequent sunburns earlier in Ymiden. Nik hadn’t bothered with a shirt and had a light scarf tied around his head. While the boys had matching bandanas and were dressed in shirts and trousers to keep the sun off.

“I’m so thirsty I could drink a lake!” Thanos answered. “I could drink an entire ocean!” Ryder exclaimed, trying to one-up his twin.

“Then it’s a good thing we’ve reached the tavern.” Nikhael looked up at the sign showing a womanly silhouette with big ugly wings. “Now put your swords away, since you can’t be playing pirates inside.”

“Can we keep ‘em?” Ryder asked hopefully.

“Yes, but no swinging them about. You want to be able to come back here, right?” The twins nodded and lowered the sticks so they hung at their sides. Then Nikhael ushered them into the busy tavern.

Inside was a bustle of patrons and barmaids moving about. The talk was rowdy with laughter and the sound of ale and beer being served was plentiful. Many of the tables were taken and Nikhael had to weave around the crowded establishment to find an empty table for two.

“Ryder, go find an empty chair, and pull it up here.” “Aye aye, Capt’n!”

The young boy had soon disappeared as Nik and Thanos sat down. It didn’t take long for a barmaid to come round, and Nik ordered a large mug of ale.

“Can I have a sip?” Thanos asked tentatively once the ale had arrived and coins were exchanged.

“Just a small one, Thanny.”

The 6-arc old held the mug in two hands and slowly tipped it to his mouth. After not even a full gulp, he squinted his face and gave a disgusted look.

“Yuck! Why do you drink that stuff?” He said, putting it down hard and the ale sloshed in the mug.

“It calms the nerves, and you get used to it.” Nikhael answered. It also makes you forget the pain.

By now Ryder had returned with a chair and joined the table. Nik waved over a couple glasses of water so the three of them could quench their thirst from the hot day. He drank deeply from the mug of ale and absently wondered whether he was tempting fate. It was just one afternoon and he deserved it after a hot day.

Despite trying to relax, the tavern seemed rowdier than usual. People clustered in groups and sometimes there were points and stares of suspicion. He was just glad none of them were making gestures to him or the boys. While not frequent, it was also not uncommon for children to visit taverns with their family.

It didn’t take long to drain his mug and as Nikhael sat back, he watched as Ryder animatedly chattered with Thanos in Rakahi, the family’s native tongue. “When I’m Captain of a ship, it’s going to have a bar and music and beer. I’ll be living the life of a true pirate!”

“Ry, if you want to be a true pirate, why don’t you get me another round of ale?” Nikhael said and flipped him a coin. Ryder fumbled for a moment and then grinned at the money. “Aye aye Captain!”

Sometimes the trick was to keep the boy busy, and sure enough the twin scampered off towards the bar and stood on tip toes with his elbows on the counter to get the attention of the barmaid. This was the life. A couple carefree moments amidst a struggling existence. Nik watched as Thanos took droplets of water with his fingers and dabbed them on his forehead to cool off.

At a table nearby, voices started to raise and there was the scrape of wooden chairs against the floor as several people stood up. One of them was a man with long fiery orange hair who looked furious but there were only a few people positioned on his side, while most of the group were facing him in opposition.

“So what if a couple homes burned down? I found my sister dead and positioned like a doll on Pilgrim’s Ascent. You can rebuild homes, but now she’s… she’s dead. She wouldn’t hurt a fly and was planning to become a priestess someday.”

“Priestess of Faldrun, I bet.” Somewhat muttered loudly, obviously meant to be heard.

The fiery haired man was about to throw a punch when someone else perked up. “Redhead bitch deserved what she got.” Instead, the punch swung wide and got the patron full in the face with a bleeding nose.

“Woah woah woah!” Arms and people suddenly began to move quickly at the arising brawl. Some people were trying to pull the aggressors back, while others were coming in as back up in case things got nasty.

It was just then that Ryder was coming back with an overly full mug of ale and he stepped gingerly, trying to skirt the growing crowd. More accusations flew and there were shouts and shoves. A full on tussle broke out with two men against three. Ryder let out a cry as he was pushed accidentally. There was a smash as the mug of ale fell to the floor and in moments Ryder was on the floor too.

“Ryder? Ry!” Nikhael shouted as he jumped to his feet. The brawl was only just getting started.

Lucas was already half drunk, with three strong ales in his otherwise empty stomach the ex-convict was already a tipsy but he was still aware enough to keep note of what was happening around him. Although he had managed to get his damned bad memories to go away, it had been a slow morning at work and all the standing around had served only to let him think too much. It was never a good thing when he thought about the past and what he could do different.

Hindsight was a bitch to the man and while it served to help avoid the same mistakes now it only did the job of ruining his days. Slouched at the bar Lucas hardly noticed the young boy beside him, standing on his toes as he ordered a drink that was unlikely for him. He struggled to fully reach it and so Lucas with a kind smile helped to hand it down to the boy before watching him head back off past a growing crowd.

Turning his back to the bar he decided to see what was going on, there was a heated argument the kind of thing Lucas was used to seeing. Usually they would fizzle out or the two starters of the fight would be left to brawl it out but clearly this was something more. Nearly all the patrons were involved now besides those too drunk to stand and those who had the smarts to stay out of it.

Lucas wasn't entirely interested until he realised the cause of the fight was a certain level of racism or assumed prejudice. It was common place to see redheads having issues in the city recently even those that weren't Aukari but by the sound of things this was not a case of mistaken identity. The redheaded man would have done well to just leave at this point but Lucas had seen this many times before, with the alcohol in the system and emotions running high. Reason would have completely gone out the window at this point.

So the fight broke out and Lucas eyes darted between the people as some tried to stop it others decided to just join in and finally to the boy that was about to become collateral damage. Standing from the chair a little too fast Lucas wobbled and grabbed the bar top for support as the blood rushed to his head. This made him unable to get top the boy before he was caught off guard.

Shaking himself and his senses clear Lucas advanced towards the growing brawl. It had started with two against three but it was quickly growing and this bar would soon be a mess and a very unsafe one at that. Knowing there wasn't much he could do to break it up at this point his main concern was the child that had found himself on the floor, surrounded by full grown men's heavy drunk feet.

Lucas vaguely noticed another man approaching where the boy had fell, he assumed it was his father but as the crowd and the fight grew the boy became more hard to see as did the other man. Lucas quickly found himself shoving men aside, dodging swings intended for others and only just managing to even get through the violence.

He eventually reached the boy shoving a much large man from behind who was about to stand on the boys leg. "Watch it you idiot." Lucas yelled as the man turned to face him, apparently furious. He said something but Lucas couldn't make it out over the noise including the many racist slurs that were being yelled from within the crowd.

As he expected the man swung for Lucas and he easily dodged the heavy handed drunk attack kicking the mans knee and following up with an uppercut to his chin as he went down to a more reasonable height. The man returned with his own hit at Lucas' stomach, he felt that one as it connected and he almost keeled over only just managing to push the opponent under the feet of the crowd around. He was consumed by the crowd and Lucas turned back towards the boy, ready to help him if his father wasn't already there.

Re: Riots at the Harpy

“Daddy? Da?” Ryder was on the floor within a sea of legs, shoes and boots. His words were in Rakahi, his native and only language. Trying to scramble to his feet, the boy placed his hand in the sticky mess of ale. “Eww… ouch!” Unbeknownst to him, there had been a shard that pricked the side of this hand.

Meanwhile Nikhael was trying to see where Ryder had fallen through the tangled mass of people. “You stay there Thanos!” He shouted back at the other twin, before forcing his way through the throng.

But it was Lucas who reached Ryder first. The boy was still trying to get to his feet when a big man was shoved away from him. When Ryder looked up, he saw the kind man who had helped him with the mug of ale. The ale that was now soaking into the wooden floors. Being unable to see his father, Ryder scrambled towards the nearest hero he could find, Lucas.

Ryder wasn’t expecting the first swing from the big man, like Lucas had, but fortunately he was much shorter and the blow wasn’t aimed for him. The twin kept close to his saviour’s legs as Lucas landed a kick followed by a punch. “Yeah! Get’em!” Ryder cheered in Rahaki, but then his eyes widened in fear as Lucas doubled over.

“Easy now,” came a Rahaki voice from behind Lucas, as Nik reached to grab Lucas under the elbows in case he should fall. Nikhael had managed to see most of the encounter but had been trapped behind a few too many people to get there. “Thank you,” he followed up quickly in Common, unsure as to the man’s tongue.

“Ryder! Take my hand.” The biqaj commanded loudly to his son, back in his native speech. The crowd was still a bubbling pot and any moment it would boil over. If Lucas seemed to need assistance, Nik would offer one available hand, otherwise he would push through the crowd to get away from the worst of it. Unfortunately, it seemed like the tavern was getting more and more patrons by the moment, who clearly wanted to get in on the brawl.

Ryder, gestured wildly for Lucas to follow, even as he held his father’s hand. The young boy would even go as far as trying to grab Lucas’s hand if it didn’t seem like he was following close behind. They soon reached the table where Thanos stood anxiously watching the chaos and trying to avoid being trampled himself.

There was a shout from the middle of the brawl and a man went sailing over a table, as though he had been punched with an incredible force to his gut. The table topped over with a crash, since the man’s legs didn’t quite clear it and several people glanced at the crumpled body with shock. However, he had deep burgundy hair and no one seemed to move towards him.

“Oh gods! We have to help him!” Nikhael exclaimed staring at the fallen body, but he was still too shocked to move. He might have made a dash right then and there, but he needed to get his boys out before the scene escalated even further.

Lucas was steadied by the hand of someone and he nodded gratefully to the man who did so. The farther of the boy he had stopped being caused some serious harm. They began to head back in the direction that the father had come from and while Lucas would normally have stayed he was not sure who's side he was meant to be on here. Normally there was a clear good and bad side but he was unsure who had escalated it and in racially charged fights like this it was even harder to know who to fight for.

So he followed Ryder who waved at him to come too and the ex-convict kept pace with them as they arrived back at the other son. He was only just managing to stay outside the breaches of the conflict as the fight spread across the whole tavern now. There was not a person besides the staff who were staying out of this massive brawl that was quickly getting more and more out of hand.

The want to be night watched the redheaded man land just out of the fray, whether he was unconscious or dead Lucas could not tell but the Biqaj was right. They couldn't leave him there because if they did, death was inevitable. Lucas turned to his companion, the violence and imminent threat truly sobering. There was no clear path to the exit so Lucas gave him a safer route. "There is a back door over that way through the kitchen, I have used it a couple times following losing fights take your kids there I will join you soon."

Lucas pointed out the entrance to the kitchen and then turned back to the injured man. He was still visible although he would soon be under the boots of the brawlers that were getting more spread out into tens of smaller fights but it was important not to mistake this for the fight calming down because it clearly wasn't.

Lucas forced his way along the bar edge nudging people out of his way but not with enough force to get them to turn there attentions to him as he reached the redhead. He was somewhat warm to the touch, confirming he was likely at least part Aukari and would certainly be dead if no one had come to help him. Carrying people from fights was not his usual job as he was normally the knocked out one.

Still Lucas hauled the man up and over his shoulder, the labour work paying off here as it was somewhat akin to carrying a sack of flour. The harder part was getting him to the kitchen and out the back, this involved a lot of dodging and weaving something that was much easier without the weight of a second person on you. Still Lucas just about managed it only ending up with bloodied nose as a stray punch had struck him near to his exit point.

Eventually he managed to make it outside though a little dazed from the hit. "Help me here would you?" Lucas attempted to lower the man gently to the ground looking for help from his new companion. Once down Lucas caught his breath, leaning against the wall panting like an old dog. "The..names...Lucas." He said between laboured inhales and exhales as he looked down the tight alley towards the main road.

"We should get you and your children out of here."
