[Sweetwine woods] Living in a bubble

Image
23rd Ymiden, Arc 716
Eric sat between the trees, surrounded by the wild as he allowed his mind to be open to the world around him. His spark working with his conscience to take in the plethora of frequencies around him. A mass of chorus, like hundreds of choirs were singing to him at once without a clear or coherent set of lyrics to follow. It was not until he chose to focus in on things that the sounds become more clear and beautiful. The notes escaping the things around him offering strange conceptual feelings that offered the Attuner information beyond what he could have perceived through vision alone.

His mind flickered between different living things from an insect, whose sporadic flight was almost predictable as the notes wavered and morphed before it would launch itself into the air from where it perched, to a bird that flew briefly through the clearing. Every frequency that entered his area he did his best to note and recognise, trying to remember what it was they belonged too.

He remained like this for quite some time just studying the area around him, listening to the notes that were sung from the creatures. Although his solitary training was soon cut short as something more interesting entered the vicinity. The chorus of this being was far more complex and full, it carried with it a mix of notes some which he recognised and others he didn't. One note that resonated with his memory was one he had felt within his own frequency and it offered him the slight knowledge that they bore Sev'ryn blood.

That was only one note in the symphony though as many others were there among the intense choral music that escaped them. Unbelievably complex compared to that of most the animals he had studied Eric had never taken the liberty of examining someone's frequency before besides his own. In this case, however, he had been unable to resist as they had wandered into his sphere of influence and he had been unable to ignore them.

He struggled to garner much else from their complex frequency searching for a note that may describe their gender to him. He began by searching for what he had recognised in himself or perhaps a note that offered the opposite when heard but he managed only to hear something in between the two. He allowed his mind to remain open as he noticed the change within their frequency at seeing him. A note of surprise resonating out at his presence.

"Afternoon there." He began to retract his mind, ending the magical projection his spark offered although his back remained towards the observer.

Perhaps their need to wander for the trial had sprung up in the wake of their brother’s departure. They might have noted that - yes, he was the more adventurous of the two - but did he have to leave so soon? Was there any reason for him to hurry off? There was still plenty to see on the island - that they could see together. Perhaps the sourness in their expression had to do with the pang of loneliness they felt. But neither of their parents had asked what was wrong when they left, so there was no one to make this admission to but the trees and the air (which they had done within the few bits of ambling about).

It was as such that they had not expected to run into anyone. This walk had been started as a means of finding solace with their newfound loneliness. That, and their home was far enough away that chancing upon the stray hunter was a rare occurrence. The man sitting there in the woods seemed to be expecting them, with his greeting and all. They wouldn’t be so surprised; they had made little effort to quiet their footsteps and even if they had, they doubted that would have done much good. The mixed blood swallowed; Mother said to be wary of strangers.

“Hello, sir.” A tentative greeting. Amaris could already assume that they were much taller than the man. They, like their brother and father, were much taller than most people they encountered. But this was no topic of conversation to be had with a stranger, they surmised. The real decision lay in whether the mixed blood ought to walk on or turn back the way they came. They didn’t know much of the inhabitants of the island outside of what their parents had told them - and there wasn’t much kindness in the warnings they were given.

But curiosity brewed. Surely, this man could be kind. Or at least decent.

“Are you lost, sir?”

Eric turned round to face them with a friendly smile, he had not anticipated their height. More confusing was their appearance, feminine features and yet the notes had been unable to sound out such. Still he supposed it wasn't his place to judge. "Lost?" He queried aloud while shrugging slightly. "Ya could say I were lost but I s'pose I would say I'm explorin'"

The Shepherd chuckled softly and stood up offering his hand out to the person before him. "The names Eric, 'ow are ya?" He waited on their response as he looked them over again, not noticing any hunting equipment it was definitely a peculiar place to find them. Then again he must have looked odd too, sat alone in a forest without any such gear himself. "Ya live round 'ere?"

The Attuner was doing his best to be friendly, he was a bit awkward and well aware of his short comings when it came to social convention. Still he liked the challenge and he enjoyed talking to people, they could offer valuable insight and so could he. He did see the world in a different way to most after all, not only because of his magic but also his upbringing.

In truth Eric had never met anyone raised in such an isolated place as himself and nor had he met anyone raised in the hybrid of Sev'ryn and Scalveen tradition.

Getting into the semantics of word choices, particularly those between 'lost' and 'exploring', wasn't what they would have expected from this interaction. But it was one way to get the mixed blood to relax some. At the very least, he was kind enough to greet them with no hostility.

"I am well. My name is Amaris." They had gone to assume that a conversation was nothing to be too wary about. The man presented a friendly air, though a bit stunted. Perhaps he lacked the same interaction that they did. It would make sense. But they weren't so sure they ought to give out information about where they lived. Or, at least not full details. "Yes, I do." They didn't divulge anything other than that, coming closer to Eric.

Interaction with other people was really something they ought to get better at. And the only way to do that was practice, was it not? "Would it be alright if I sat with you?" If he should say yes, they would lower themselves beside him, drawing their legs in close as to not take up too much space. They tucked a lock of hair behind their ear, glancing over at the man as they furrowed their brows. "What...were you doing?"

To explore, one had to move about - not sit. Maybe he'd been taking a momentary break. Maybe he'd been meditating. That would mean that they were interrupting. They might have gotten up, attempting to stand once more.
