It crossed Elyna’s mind that she was making a victim of a perfectly innocent individual because he was acting in a slightly strange way and if someone thought she was a criminal every time she stepped beyond the bounds of normal behaviour, she’d never leave the prisons. But then, she did have training for this sort of thing and her senses told her that something was off.

Her gaze dropped to Levinia’s boots and she grinned, “Levi,” she replied seriously, “whenever you go dancing I can promise you, no one is looking at your boots,” the Skyrider looked up with a grin, brow raised. She examined her own simple clothes and shrugged, “If I can get through Ashen without having to replace any of my clothes, I’ll be happy,” she admitted.
“But there is only so much I can do with mending scrapes and tears and washing out blood,” she frowned for a moment, “you don’t have some family secret do you? For washing blood out of linen?” The young woman had had to replace more shirts than she liked to count. Luckily when they became too tattered she could always use them as bandages, but her stock of rags was starting to exceed her stock of clothes. But the cycle could only get better, right?

Elyna was glad when her friend rediscovered their target and she started walking again. They approached one of the small fishing boats so she could watch him from the corner of her eye. He crouched down at a rowing boat laden with very long fish and started talking to the man who was unloading the boat.

“Lev…do those fish look……strange to you?” They looked heavy as they were handed up from the dock, one by one. Didn’t sailors usually throw fish without much due care and attention? Shouldn’t there be a bit more flex to the bones?

“Do fish go hard when they’re dead?”

Levinia contemplated her friend’s question with a pouty expression her violet blue eyes going distant. “Hmmmm…” She began, “Well always wash out blood in cold water, first of all, and don’t let it set, or it will never come out.” This was something that her mother had engrained in her. As the wife of a doctor there was always some blood she needed to wash out and buying new clothing got expensive, even for a doctor. “Vinegar and salt, if you can afford it, will help too. Let it soak and try not to rub too much or you’ll wear your fabric.”

It suddenly dawned on her that Elyna was in a profession that dealt with cleaning blood out of clothing. It was one thing when you were a doctor and had to deal with bleeding patients, it was quite another to be in a job so dangerous that you had blood all over your clothing. Regardless of whether it was your blood or someone else's. The thought made her cringe and she suddenly saw her friend in a different sort of light.

She was taken out of her ponderings as Ely, once again, brought her attention to the object of their investigation. Levinia studied the so called, ‘long fish’ and frowned. She didn’t know much about fish but they did look almost artificial, perhaps, “...wooden?” She concluded with wide eyes. “I don’t know much about fish, but I don’t think they suffer death stiffness like humans do. For one thing their bones are more flexible.” She shrugged, this was all theory, of course, without the knowledge of a fisherman it was all speculation.

Levinia’s eyes focused on the brunette’s face. “What are you thinking, Elyna? I know you’re thinking something.” She grinned, “You’re head is smoking!” She then waved a hand over Elyna’s head, pretending that it was truly smoking and making dark clouds over her head.

Elyna pulled a face, the likelihood she’d get home in time to soak her clothing before blood set and dried, was slim. No wonder she had such trouble keeping her clothes in serviceable condition. The vinegar and salt though, she would try. Certainly she managed to wear through shirts in particular at an alarming rate of speed. It was however unavoidable and she was going to start wearing darker colours. Pale linens stained too easily.

She turned back to the suspicious boat, passing another glance over it before she stopped. Laughing and batting at her friends hands. The Skyrider was well aware that her features usually gave her thoughts away. Or at the very least, gave away that that that she was deep in thought, “I’m not going to combust…would you have an ointment for that if I did?” She teased.

No, she turned back once more and watched as a large coin purse was exchanged between the two men, “I think…there is something in the fish? It would stop it flexing right?” If someone was going to smuggle something into the city, if the barrels and carts and boxes were all checked how else could you do it? Fish were smelly, wet, slimy and less thoroughly looked over.

“Levi…I think we’d better alert the guard…do you mind keeping a watch out whilst I signal someone? I don’t want to lose those fish.”

Levinia listened to her friend as she watched the exchange. It certainly seemed like an awful lot of money for few fish, even large ones as those. There didn't even seem to be any haggling either. Didn't these fish mongers love to haggle over their catch of the day. It all seemed strange and she agreed with Ely, there was something very fishy about those fish. The mental pun almost made her giggle out loud, but she stifled it and kept a straight face. After all, this was an official investigation, even if it was by two girls.

The idea of staying alone frightened Levinia a tiny bit. Thinking about it for a moment, she realized she was at a safe distance and that she doubted they even realized she was there. So, drawing up some courage she nodded, "Alright, you go alert the authorities and I'll stay here and see if they go anywhere." The urge to bite on her fingernails hit her hard, but she resisted knowing that it was a gross habit and her hands weren't particularly clean at the moment.

The honey cake she had earlier was starting to sit on her belly like a honey flavored stone. She had been alone before, but never in this kind of situation. Suddenly, it seemed as the whole world was suspect and knew exactly what she was doing. Levinia drew up more courage as she watched the continued exchange and began to recite herbs in alphabetical order. This seemed to relax her a bit as she waited for her friend to return.

Elyna paused to ensure that Levinia was standing somewhere out in the open and easy to spot before she dashed away, jogging through the busy crowds of people. She approached a young Knight that she recognised form the training yard and explained to him what they had seen, and what they suspected. He'd watched her bemused until she had grown insistent that they at least inspect the fish being bought onto the shore. He had reluctantly agreed and parted company, approaching a pair of guards before making his approach to the laden boat.

The Skyrider returned to Levinia, cheeks flushed with exhilaration and offered her friend a smile, "well," she admitted and slid her arm through her friends, "I think we've done all we can for today," she watched from the corner of her eye as the boat master started to argue with the young Knight and the two guards stepped in, insisting on picking up one of the large fish. She watched their expressions narrow in suspicion and she wheeled Levinia away before anyone thought to look in their direction. She led her friend back through the crowd, not wanting any whiff of target to be laid upon the young woman, but she couldn't stop smiling.

"I'll see how it all comes out, I'll let you know?" She promised and scanned the streets, "now...what shall we do with the rest of our day...?"
