The Hand of Faldrun

The First Finger
Image
The First Finger on the Hand of Faldrun is the main sleeping and living quarters of those in military service to Sirothelle. As with all Fingers, the building is designed in a star shape in plan with five spiked corners of the building representing the five fingers of Faldrun's far reaching hand. There are four? of these barracks and they are located centrally throughout the city to allow the Guard to reinforce city patrols throughout Sirothelle with great speed.

Three entries are barred by an iron portcullis, lead directly to a central open courtyard, used for training. In the center is a burning torch and altar to represent Faldrun's watchful presence. From this central, pentagonal courtyard, one must go up one of the three entry passages to access the inner ring rooms via a hallway that runs all around the barracks. These house the officer's quarters and each are provided a modest room, with a bed of fur that is fireproofed by Golden Salamander resin. An officer's mess is also available for the officers. The Barracks Commander is provided with a few extra luxuries such as a small closet, an armour stand and a bench with a stool for writing.

The outer ring is primarily for the guards. A long row of beds made of rock, covered in fireproof hay, runs along the perimeter of the building, with small secure lockboxes for each guard to keep their belongings. A mess hall is located in one sector of the outer ring. It consists of a long table with benches on either side. A small kitchen is located adjacent, comprising of large a large fireplace and a storage section for food.

Forlan Laukee

Race: Aukari
Title: Barracks Commander
Skills: Tactics - 35
Rhetoric - 62
Socialization - 75
Negotiation - 40
Melee Combat - 30
Politics - 65

Forlan is an old Aukari at 32 arcs with short red hair and trimmed beard that has faded in luster. Ascending slowly through the ranks, his general very sociable, yet naive personality has been advantageous for the Zatkai to enforce their influence without directly being seen doing so. Forlan is merely a puppet and capable of following very general orders and capturing the imaginations of his soldiers. Otherwise, he is completely useless.

Kyani Aulan

Race: Aukari
Title: Officer
Skills: Tactics - 55
Melee Combat - 62
Intimidation - 75
Leadership - 57
Mount: Horse - 55
Dodging - 73

Kyani is tough and fiery at a young age of 24 arcs. Though she is young, she is competent with a fine skillset that allows her to work well in combat situations. However, this has also meant that she does not trust her Garrison Commander, as she feels he is incompetent. Often she disagrees with his decisions even though it is not her place to say so which has had her treading the line of sedition.

Wilau Harai

Race: Aukari
Title: Officer
Skills: Tactics - 40
Melee Combat - 57
Intimidation - 54
Leadership - 51
Mount: Horse - 58
Espionage - 52

Wilau is smug and condescending. He is middle aged and of average height. He has been an officer for a some arcs and is interested in ascending rank but hasn't gained the recognition he believes he deserves. Rather than attempt to advertise his own qualities, Wilau prefers to use deception to reach his goals. His main aim is to impeach Officer Kyani and is attempting to find enough evidence to do so.

Kyor Arkye

Race: Aukari
Title: Officer
Skills:Tactics - 51
Melee Combat - 65
Unarmed Combats - 60
Leadership - 55
Mount: Horse - 58
Running - 57

Kyor is boisterous and showy officer, with physical prowess in combat. He is large and muscular and slightly below average height and for this reason commands the respect and admiration from his soldiers. Despite his physical attributes, he is a tad naive to the political undertones that are occurring within the Garrison's leadership.

The Hand of Faldrun

The Second Finger
Image
The Second Finger on the Hand of Faldrun comprises all of the training arenas for those in military service to Sirothelle: specifically the Infantry and the City Guard. As with all Fingers, the building is designed in a star shape in plan with five spiked corners of the building representing the five fingers of Faldrun's far reaching hand.

Training in the military for any of the forces in Sirothelle is not easy. For these two factions, basic training begins after schooling finishes, once they have gained the skills necessary to function as Aukari in other walks of life. Basic Training to be in the Infantry or City Guard lasts for two seasons, during which they are given no more than two three-day breaks to relax and spend time with their families. For the rest of the time, they are housed within the training facility.

Days start before dawn, where they must pass inspection (both of their living space and their personal presentation) before being allowed to break their fast. Lunch and an evening meal breaks up the training during the day before finally being allowed to prepare for the next day and collapsing into their beds. Above all else, the training is intense, physically more than mentally, and many drop out before they complete it. Physical injury, unless it is permanent, will not result in a recruit being forced to leave; instead the individual is normally "back-trooped" into a later intake to continue training when they are fit enough to do so.

There is a great variety in what the recruits learn:
  • Discipline
  • A Ranged Weapon
  • A Melee Weapon
  • Unarmed Combat
  • Fieldcraft
  • Stealth
  • Teamwork/Followership
  • Leadership
  • Stamina and Fitness
Once the recruits pass out of basic training, they are separated according to which specific faction they applied for. Their training continues for another season. The Infantry will go on to specialise in more weaponry, honing their skills as far as possible, and developing further combative skills which will help them in battle. The City Guard take on more of an academic training, whilst also maintaining their fitness. They will be taught about the law of Sirothelle, the government, and how far their jurisdiction spreads.

The Hand of Faldrun

The Third Finger
Image
The Third Finger on the Hand of Faldrun houses the City Guard and policing services in the city. Directly in the centre of Sirothelle, this Finger has the easiest access to the entire city. As with all Fingers, the building is designed in a star shape in plan with five spiked corners of the building representing the five fingers of Faldrun's far reaching hand.

Once completing the two seasons of Basic Training, and then the further season of Specialised Training, the recruits are automatically promoted to the first rank of the City Guard (Corporal), placing them above the soldiers in the Sirothelle Infantry for necessary support in their roles. From there, the Corporals will perform general peace-keeping duties in and around the city, including marshalling the quarries - where slaves and law-breakers work.

As well as policing the general civilian public, the City Guard also functions as the military police force to monitor the actions of the other military arms: the Occult and the Infantry. This is why they are given an instant rank; they are better placed to police the general soldiers without a rank with the limited authority that the rank of Lance Corporal holds.

Progression through the ranks can be quick, or take Reaching the rank of Corporal is a significant milestone in any soldier's career; it shows skill and ambition. At this stage, members of the City Guard may have the potential to go for a Commission, to gain more command over the ranks of the City Guard. Ultimately, the two structures work separately; the NCOs considered to be the supervisors, where the COs are more overseers. It it possible for the more wealthy recruits to go straight down the commissioned route... provided their family offers enough of a donation to the organisation.

Ranks of the City Guard:
Non-Commissioned Commanding xxxxx Commissioned Commanding
Lance Corporal xxxxx Adjutant Company of 45 soldiers
Corporal Section of 6 soldiers xxxxx Captain Regiment of 92 soldiers
Sergeant Troop of 14 soldiers xxxxx Major Legion of 184 soldiers
X Sergeant Company of 45 soldiers xxxxx Commander X of 368 soldiers
Warrant Regiment of 92 soldiers xxxxx General X of 736 soldiers
xxxxx Commandant The City Guard

The Hand of Faldrun

The Fourth Finger
Image
The Fourth Finger on the Hand of Faldrun is home to the infantry, offering slightly more advanced training. Located on the outskirts of the city, this Finger is perfectly placed to provide a quick retaliation to any attempting to storm the city. As with all Fingers, the building is designed in a star shape in plan with five spiked corners of the building representing the five fingers of Faldrun's far reaching hand.

Following the completion of the two seasons of Basic Training, and then the further season of Specialised Training, the recruits become soldiers in the Infantry and are assigned to a regiment, where they will likely serve for the majority of their career. Progression through the ranks can be quick, depending on the ability and ambition of the soldier in question, as well as perceived acts of selflessness for the good of Sirothelle and Faldrun's cause. For those who reach the Non-Commissioned rank of Corporal, members of the Infantry may have the potential to go for a Commission, to gain more command over the ranks of the Infantry. Ultimately, the two structures work separately; the NCOs considered to be the supervisors, where the COs are more overseers. It it possible for the more wealthy recruits to go straight down the commissioned route... provided their family offers enough of a donation to the organisation.

Considered to be part of the Occult (the visible part), the Aukari infantry is modest in comparison to other Idalosian militaries, averaging only a few thousand soldiers in total. The Infantry is approximately double the size of the City Guard. The main strength is in their tactical units who rely on guerilla warfare, sabotage and assassination to sway a final battle in their favour. Siege weaponry is used to great effect, from ballistae, to catapults and trebuchet, from which is cast fiery spears and enormous earthenware pots filled with deadly Naphtha oil, a substance so flammable that it almost explodes into fire.

The complex in which the Occult Infantry reside is a hulking building of black stone. Great stone flying buttresses are used to stabilize the building with the tops of the buttresses adorned with spikes that thrust out with a show of power. The building is split in the middle and partly separated. This schism is used for the entry and circulation space, stairs and corridors, for infantry units to move about freely and quickly. The building is comprised of five levels: the lowest two consist of block rooms of 16 for the rankless infantrymen. The next houses Junior NCOs in 6-man rooms and Senior NCOs in 2-man rooms. The Final two floors house the Officers needing accommodation.

Ranks of the Infantry:
Non-Commissioned Commanding xxxxx Commissioned Commanding
Soldier xxxxx
Lance Corporal Supporting a Corporal xxxxx Adjutant Company of 45 soldiers
Corporal Section of 6 soldiers xxxxx Captain Regiment of 92 soldiers
Sergeant Troop of 14 soldiers xxxxx Major Legion of 184 soldiers
X Sergeant Company of 45 soldiers xxxxx Commander X of 368 soldiers
Warrant Regiment of 92 soldiers xxxxx General X of 736 soldiers
xxxxx Commandant The Infantry

The Hand of Faldrun

The Fifth Finger
Image
The Fifth Finger on the Hand of Faldrun houses the Aukari Occult. Well protected, it is built in much the same way as the other four Fingers, but is nigh on impenetrable by any who are not among the elite. As with all Fingers, the building is designed in a star shape in plan with five spiked corners of the building representing the five fingers of Faldrun's far-reaching hand.

The central building dedicated to the Occult is made up of the typical volcanic stone that frequents Sirothelle. The building is adorned with two massive obsidian spikes with yellow fiery centres, sculpted to provide an unmistakable sense of violence offered not only by the building but perhaps symbolically the eyes of Faldrun himself.

The Occult building is located to the rear of the conglomerate of military buildings of Faldrun. A cobbled access way leads toward the entrance of the thorny building and one is struck immediately by the lack of Aukari that enter and exit the building. In fact, none are seen using the front entry at all and this has given rise to the theory that underground tunnels are employed to provide access to the Occult in order to maintain anonymity.

Those who do access the Occult building from the front are usually visitors or high government officials. The first room one encounters is a simple, black, circular interior, with the side pierced with pin-holes for light. The visitor is greeted with a whisper and the acoustics of the perfectly circular room bounces the voice about to make it impossible to detect the source. Few have been admitted into the building from this point onward and fewer have been able to recount the tale. Some say that a curved stone section of the room's wall cracks open and slides along the inside of the wall to reveal a dark void. Those that enter are never seen again and the door closes, leaving no sign there was a door in the first place.

Stories have it that the Occult building contains a network of the same cylindrical black rooms with these sliding stone doors, that house the Occult, from their sleeping quarters to the briefing rooms, to their training rooms. Truth be told, little is spoken about what really goes on in these dark rooms. Stories are told however and there is difficulty to separate truth from tale.

What is known is that the Occult building is essentially a base of operations first and foremost and secondarily, a place to hone the skills of Occult members. Established Occult members often reside in all areas of Sirothelle and Idalos, taking part in numerous missions. They will filter into the Occult building to be briefed on a mission but will rarely stay for long.

Initiates live in the Occult building as they begin the final step of their training to become a fully fledged Occult member. Life in the Occult building, for the initiates, is always a test. The instructors place members into scenarios in which they must compete with each other, endure psychological and physical torture and survive even the most regular activities, such as detecting if their food has been poisoned, whether the corridors have traps laid out for them or if their room is set on fire as they sleep. The never ending onslaught of normal life is mixed with daily training activities, made to physically and mentally sharpen and keep their initiates ready for anything. Moving about the building, the initiates must use their skill of deception, subterfuge and silence as they navigate the dark halls and rooms. It is often said that established Occult members, will beat a poorly hidden initiate. Some have died this way. When an Occult initiate is ready and conditioned correctly, they are then given the role in low key missions and the difficulty is slowly ramped up to city scale and then world scale missions.
