[Seasonal Event] Something in the (sweet) wine water?

Hearing that she was growing up made Ela smile a little, a small grin. Yet something of it hurt. "Growing up", as if the goals Ela had thus far had been child like. The pup tried not to dwell on the words, but the idea of it wasn't one she liked to hold on to, especially with the talk she'd had with Karem earlier that season. Kura didn't mean offence, though, Ela knew it. As far as Kura was concerned, Ela and her wild side were just her finding her way in the world. Ela couldn't agree less.
As Kura contemplated, Ela considered for a moment. Perhaps whatever was in there was trapped and wanted to break free? Perhaps it was some greater power that needed to be fully released. Whatever it was, however, was unknown. They could speculate all day, it wouldn't change anything. All the could do is take a risk, and Ela knew what risk she wanted to take.

Until Ben pointed out that nobody would be stepping in to the hollow emptiness of potential death and pain. Ela frowned, though she understood that perhaps the man made sense. Walking in to a void that had, as far as the eye could see, no floor was probably a bad idea. It didn't stop her curiosity, however. Whatever was inside there had to be important, and if it could survive why couldn't she? After all, she was Ela Wolfsdotter. She had a greater destiny than "death by magic tree".
Then Tom opened the door, and all of a sudden the pup was knocked backwards, dropping to her stomach from the blow. Quickly, Ela dug her claws in to the ground, using them like climbing spikes to keep herself in place. Quickly, without hesitation, the girl clawed her way through the ground, trying to make her way closer to the tree. "Son of a hairy leopards nephew" the girl growled under her breath, slowly making her way to the tree. She would open the door, if she got close enough, opening it wider to let out whatever was in there.

As she crawled, her eyes watched around with wonder. It was beautiful beyond words, seeing the colors swirl. She almost didn't want it to end.

Sometimes Sephira felt like two people; both the dutiful soldier and the inquisitive mage. For the last few seasons she had spent far too much time in her role as an Element, so for the first time in a long time she allowed herself a moment to relish in her natural curiosity. She nodded mutely at Hookor’s comment about the oddness of the tree. Whatever it was, it was likely not natural to the area. Perhaps it was the work of magic, spirits or even Immortals but this was not something of mortal making as far as she could discern.

The mage considered the wistful thought of stepping inside the door herself. She had her magic, and the best chance of returning if something went wrong; granted that was only if magic worked inside the strange place. However, before she was able to offer this option Sephira was knocked back by a savage wind.
“Rand’s breeches!” She whispered in awe at the torrent of colorful strands of light. The wind tore at her crimson coat and hair, forcing her back a step. Ether blazed within her Spark as she quickly created a crimson glowing skystep to steady her right leg and gave herself something to press into against the wind. Sephira’s witchmark was radiant once again, her irises glowing bright red as she stared silently into the cascade of color.

The colors were beautiful and entrancing, they made her feel alive again...excited...and enamored by their enigmatic nature. The colors themselves reminded her of Frequencies since they each reverberated unique sounds. The purple was deep and calm, and the green whistled with excitement but the red strand screamed and screeched as if it pain. It was a perceived pain that Sephira felt empathy for. The Element had experienced a great deal of pain and guilt over the past two seasons and, there had been moments when she had wanted to scream and cry like that bright scarlet strand, but instead she had kept it buried deep within. Without realizing it the mage reached for that strand of red light with right her right hand outstretched.

Rowan made a face when Amaris told him an apology wasn't necessary.

"No, I don't think anyone else would have reacted that way. I've always had the sort of temper that's bigger than I am," he returned, trying to make a poor joke out of it, smiling sadly. "The way everyone else seemed to be looking at me... yeah, I don't think mine was a popular response. Sephira looked like she might be ready to kill me if she could. You know with her crazy mage powers." He held up his hands, wiggling his fingers to convey magic.

As everyone debated the matter of the door, coming to the general consensus that they should go through it, he opened his mouth to protest the mixed blood councillor volunteering for such a thing but no words came out. He didn't know what to say, how to argue. Telling them that they simply shouldn't do it didn't seem like much of a reason. However, it was too late because Tom had already opened the door and he felt that Amaris would simply step forward, ready to sacrifice themself for the rest of the group's sake if it was dangerous.

"Amaris... wait-"

---

As the door opened, colours swirled out. They were almost living entities, not necessarily sentient but certainly loud and bright. It was a mix of hypnotic and terrifying. The force of it made him stagger back a step or two. "Empress' bloody marriage bed," he gasped out, unleashing an blasphemous curse from his homeland; it was the sort of thing that would have gotten his arse kicked in the Kingdom. It was clear how rattled he was that he'd allowed it to slip out when it was an indicator of his origins for someone in the know. However, he wasn't thinking of such things as the colours seemed to invade the islet that they were on.

He was drawn towards it but some part of his mind still worried about Amaris. He made a grab for their arm. "Amaris... we go in together," he whispered, already moving forward, slow, uncertain steps.

Kura looked at the mist that gathered around her and Tio, raising an eyebrow at it. It didn't seem to hurt, so she just shook her head, musing to herself. "Well, that didn't seem to have any side effects." she thought, not aware that Tio could hear her thoughts. At least, not until she started picking up his thoughts, as well as the background noise of his mind. "Oh, pants. That's fun. I'm assuming you can hear my thoughts as easily as I can hear yours?" she thought, now aiming her thought directly at Tio. In the background, as opposed to any music, Tio would be able to hear a single phrase repeated over and over. "Protect my people. Protect my people. Protect my people." Then Tio started to ponder about the possibility of penguin conquest and she looked at him with an amused look. "I planned for an avian assault once when I was younger. Penguins have neither thumbs nor particularly good talons, and they can't fly, so they can't use weapons and have no natural weapons save for their beaks, poor talons, and swimming speed. Keep at range and take them out with arrows." she thought, grinning slightly.

Then the door opened, knocking the entire group off their feet. She saw several others try to get back up, but she took a similar route to her sister, pulling two arrows from her quiver and jamming them into the ground. Since she didn't have claws like Ela did, she used the arrows in place of them to give her purchase as she crawled her way up to the door. She heard Tio's thought process about the colors, but didn't have an opinion on it. She was focused on her goal now, and all Tio would hear is the background noise of her thoughts, but with an alteration. "Protect my people. Get to the door. Protect my people. Get to the door." It would seem that when Kura had an immediate goal, it completely hijacked her thought process.

Now, they wouldn't pretend to have any immediate distaste for their perceived delicacy. They had, after all, just burst into tears in front of the groups and that was enough of an embarrassment to last a the remainder of the season and more. And beside that, they wouldn't want the group - or Rowan - to veer any further off track and become distracted. They could recall the words of the mage among them from the previous season quite clearly - awareness could keep you alive. Given the direction this exploration had taken, this would be an important thing to remember. And they were about to inform him of just that, though they took a step forward to approach the door.

It was not to say that a foul word had never left their lips, but it wasn't often that any did. Habits had been formed in their childhood where censorship had been instilled within them. But for the moment, such were forgotten. "By Ashan's great stamen, they're...beautiful." The exposure to color was nothing new, but to see them dance swirl as this colored wind did was something else. They were locked in a momentary trance, before being pulled right from it at a hand on their arm.

Brows furrowed, the mixed blood walked beside the much smaller man, nodding down to him. "Yes." It would be the only verbal response he would get that made sense. Their mind was already running laps around the tree, questions and speculations abound as they crept forward with him in an attempt to enter the swirling void of color.

85th Ashan, 718
Things seemed to move in a strange, weird moment. The door swung, people screamed and shouted and reacted but only one thing really came of it. Only one consequence, and that was one which shaped things for a long time to come on Scalvoris.

Hookor himmed and hawed, Devin grabbed Rynata and tried to run, but Rynata dug her heels in and didn't let that happen because, as she spotted, there was really nowhere to run to on that little island. So, she grabbed Devin right back and they dug in. Although that was the opposite of both Rowan and Amaris whoo seemed to think that going forward was the way to sort this out.

Ela dug in too - and crawled a little, trying and hoping to get to the tree just in time to open the door. She was joined by Kura, her sister, and Karem's children moved purposefully to try and get to the door, albeit for different reasons.

Had the Immortal of Luck looked on any of them, then maybe things would have been different. Maybe.

Yet in that moment, it was Tio and Sephira whose actions luck smiled upon. It was probably worth noting at this point, however, that the Immortal of Luck also holds the Domain of Spite. Whoever blew on the dice made them fall a certain way.

On their edge.

As Tio and Sephira touched the coloured strands, they felt that colour swirl around them. Each of them gathered there, no matter what they'd been trying to do experienced being surrounded in, engulfed and totally wrapped up in one colour. The touch of the coloured strands was best described as freezing hot and it burned as it melted on them. It was a strange, and wholly unpleasant experience that each of them felt and, those who had magic among them recognised it at an instinctual, base, soul level.

There was high pitched screaming all around them, enough for it to make them cover their ears and the colour they saw was so intense that they had to shield their eyes from it as it burned into them. Every nerve ending lit in pain and, for an eternity of approximately ten bits, that pain was all they felt, and it was coloured whatever colour it was they saw.

And then, it stopped.

Just as suddenly as it had begun, it stopped. They lay, knelt and stood on an island with a tree. It was a large and beautiful tree but it was just a tree. Normal. No seasonal shifting in its leaves, no single piece.

Just a tree. And them?

Well....
Consequences this round:
Consequence: Positive: Rynata won the "Funny Bunny" award and will gain extra loot at the end!
Consequence: Unknown:
  • Tio and Sephira's actions were randomly chosen by a dice roll to be the ones which happened first. They have sealed the fate of themselves, this group, the animals and the island.

This is a potentially high risk thread. Your pc might be maimed, scarred, psychologically damaged, forced into strange and weird situations, killed or even forced to stop and take a long, hard look at their lives.
This thread will have an impact on all of Scalvoris.
No animals, trees or imaginary friends were harmed in the creation of this thread.
This thread structure and objectives, achievements etc are following a way of modding which was done by a very good friend, Straylor. All credit to him for the ideas.)

Objectives

! Message from: Must Do Objectives This Round!
Your pc has just been exposed to some pretty strange stuff and has picked up a mutation / witchbrand / sort of thing. Nothing with any power, but you have just been physically changed in some way. Do your eyes glow? Have you got one too many fingers on your left hand? Is your hair permanently wet? That kind of thing. Please pm me with a suggestion for your change / addition.

[Seasonal Event] Something in the (sweet) wine water?

Image
The tips of her fingers reached out, almost without her realizing until she had made contact with the strange scarlet ribbon of radiant color. It swirled around her hand, up her arm and then around her body. The mage stared in wonder as the color wrapped around her as if it were examining her. It may have felt benign at first but then the swirl of red began to constrict around her form, engulfing her fully as if it wanted to smother her. Panic bubbled to the forefront of Sephira’s mind and her Rupturing spark seemingly seized in her chest, her emotions sending reverberations of fear and terror into the alien entity that was fused with her soul.

She was blind, or at least all she could see was that single color; red. It consumed her vision and obscured everything around her. Sephira could no longer feel where she was in space and that thought petrified her. A Rupturer always knew where they were, they knew exactly where they stood on their two feet, but now she had no bearing, no hope of finding out where she was. With the pain reverberating against her skin, Sephira couldn’t even be certain that she was still standing on the islet, or if she was seizing on the ground. All she could see and feel was the color surrounding her.

Suddenly a chilling thought entered her mind as her Spark trembled with the echoes of her fear. Sephira’s Rupturing spark had acted on it’s on in the past depending on her emotional state. When she was afraid it would attempt to Blink her to another location. The mage could feel her Spark hungrily grasping for ether, writhing in an attempt to create a rift in space. This was beyond dangerous, if it created a portal that was poorly made because of her mental state she could be sheared in half. At least then her death would be quick, or it could succeed and dump her in the nearby river, effectively drowning her. The mage rallied in that one tiny corner of her mind that she had left. The scalding frozen pain tore at the rest of her mind, but in this insignificant little crack of her consciousness she could cling to sanity and try to rein in her Spark.

Sephira tried to focus on controlling her fear. She could deal with the pain, even if it stripped her of her lucidity, but she needed to cast aside her fear. If she could feel pain, then she was still alive; the maddening torturous pain at least meant that she was still breathing.

With lungs that she could barely feel, the woman began focusing on her haggard breathing, trying to get her emotions under control.

Breath in, breath out.

Inhale, exhale.

The commands cycled through her chaotic mind, keeping her just conscious enough to hold back her Spark. Ever since the cult attack and her Spark losing control in that underground chamber Sephira had worked to improve her control over it. This was the ultimate test.....had she learned enough to keep it at bay?

The bits that followed felt like a millennia, pain and screaming that sent hot tears down her face. Why had she touched that damned red strand? Were Rowan, Kura, Amaris and the others still alive? These thoughts kept her from going completely mad. She had people to protect, people to live for. Who else would threaten Rowan if she didn’t survive?

Without any indication the crimson hue began to fade from her vision, the color itself seeming to seep into the fabric of Sephira’s skin. The mage felt raw and newborn, as if she had been baptized in pure liquid Ether and then set aflame. Something had changed, something in the very depths of her soul.

The Flame Element couldn’t be quite sure what that ‘something’ was until she managed to open her eyes and look upon the skin of her hands and arms. Radiant, glowing runic markings in the same crimson that had consumed her now decorated her skin. The runes were strange and alien, written in large circles and swirling over her arms, hands, across her torso and over her right shoulder. Sephira stared at them aghast, unable to speak as the markings began to grow darker and lose their luminescence, turning a matte red. Something told her that these markings might work similar to her witchmark, lighting up only when she drew ether into her Sparks.

The mage silently found her feet, crawling up and looking around at the others with a troubled expression.

“Is everyone alright?” Sephira asked with a croaking voice. Moving to help anyone near her that needed assisting getting to their feet.

It was then that the soldier turned slowly to face the tree. The strange magic that had sent it cascading back and forth through the seasons was now absent, it was a simple mundane tree now. Had they sealed the source of the strange happenings in Sweetwine woods or not? Only time would tell.

As Rynata grabbed him, thus keeping him from fleeing from the island, Devin started to spew a multitude of curses, each one fouler and more unsuitable for children and innocent young women than the one before it. He tried to shake her off with all of his strength, but it was already too late. All that he could do was wait for those … things to engulf him and hope that being turned to dust wouldn’t be too painful. He didn’t like pain. He didn’t like dying either. There was so much that he still wanted to do, but unfortunately it didn’t seem as if he would be given much of a choice. Devin Thorn, thief, con man, false naturalist and self-proclaimed member of one of the Eastern Settlement’s richest families would die on the 85th of Ashan at the ripe old age of twenty-two, and his poor parents would never know what had happened to him.

The strand that wrapped itself around his body was violet. Under normal circumstances he might have found the colour pretty, but as it was he just screamed as loudly as he could and tried to move away from it, to no avail. He was effectively trapped. The strand’s touch was hot and cold at the same time so that he wasn’t sure if he was about to burn or turn into a block of ice. It was in his hair, in his eyes, in his mouth and on his skin where it melted into tiny puddles that subsequently evaporated. At the same time, he could hear a high-pitched sound. He covered his ears because he was pretty sure that he would go deaf otherwise, and then his hands abruptly went to his eyes instead because the colour was so intense that he was worried that he would go blind, and being blind was even worse than being deaf in his opinion. He also held his breath because he was worried that he would just suffocate if he breathed in too much of it.

Every one of his nerve endings seemed to be on fire, and after a while he simply curled up into a ball and started to whimper because the pain was too much to bear, and he couldn’t think clearly anymore. And then it stopped, as quickly as it had started. He just lay there for a moment because he didn’t trust the sudden calm, and then he slowly stood up and looked around. The tree in front of him was just a tree now, and it looked deceptively harmless. He was about to grab his axe and chop it down before it started doing weird stuff again, but then he realized that he had left it at home. So, he turned to his companions instead. He was just about to rush over to Tom and hit him in the face with his fist because he was responsible for everything in his opinion because he hadn’t closed the door, and he wanted to make him pay, when he heard Sephira speak.

“No, obviously not. I almost died!” he replied and furrowed his brow as he noticed the markings on her arms. He was pretty sure that she hadn’t had them before. He just stared at her for a moment, and then he frantically began to check his own body for weird mutations. He still looked the same. He didn’t have any markings on his skin, he hadn’t grown any extra limbs, and from what he could see his hair hadn’t changed colour either. He breathed a huge sigh of relief. He was still alive and still normal. He didn’t realize that his eyes were no longer brown. Instead, they were violet, and nearly blue in places, almost like two galaxies …

Perhaps it was due to the blue tone of his skin, perhaps just chance, regardless, a sky blue strand of color enveloped the half-eidisi, and he almost disappear within it. Then the pain. So intense, it was like firebranding every inch of his being all at once. His breath was taken, and for a good ten bits, Hookor thought his life was over. He tried to scream, but there was nothing that came from him. He tried desperately to keep his ears covered, but it did no good. But then, just as Crook was about to submit his soul to fate...

It stopped. Suddenly they all surrounded a simple, ordinary tree. Hookor tried to stand, though he was wobbly on his feet. As he did so, he felt something in the back of his pants. At first the young Crook thought he might have relieved himself, fecally incontinent from the intense pain and fear. He reached around and felt his back right above the crack of his behind.

That's odd?
he thought to himself. The lump was there, but it was hard. As discretely as he could, Crook slipped one of his hands down the back of his trousers.

"Holy hell."
he said to himself in a whisper. He looked around to make sure no one else had seen. He swallowed hard, the fear returning. Can they see the bulge? he wondered. He lowered his head in exasperation. How would he explain this to anyone...the blue boy now had himself a tail.

[Seasonal Event] Something in the (sweet) wine water?

She hadn't reached the door yet when the colors wrapped around her, a blue in her case. It was...painful, terrifying, and absurd. Kura grit her teeth to keep any sound from coming out, but she was also pinned in place, unable to move forward. Hopefully, her sister was having better luck, but she kinda figured the same was happening to the entire group, that this light was changing them on a deep level. She felt the fire that was her power, that was her, rage in protest at this unwanted intrusion. She clamped down on it though, when her powers grew from rage they tended to be uncontrollable and dangerous.

When the pain and the colors stopped, she was surprised to find herself fairly unharmed. Looking up at the tree, Kura noticed that it was now a normal tree, no sign of a door or seasonal leaves. Groaning, the Mortalborn hauled herself to her feet, pulling her arrows out of the ground as she did so. She put her arrows back in her quiver, then looked around at the rest of the group. Devin's eyes had changed, Sephira had new tatoo-like symbols, Hookor had a tail, it appeared that the colors had mutated the group. Kura started to check herself for her own mutation, but found it on the first place she looked. Her fingernails had been turned to claws, similar to those her sister had, but more talon-like. "...saves me money on a pair of gauntlets, I suppose." she murmured before she walked over to her sister.

"You okay, Ela?" she asked her sibling, before she held up her hands with a slight grin. "I think you're goin' to have to teach me how to use these things properly, sis." she said, laughing slightly. "So, what'd you get?" she said, with a laugh before she looked at where the door had been. "We're going to have to keep an eye on this, I think." she said, her tone serious. This sort of thing would be worth keeping a watch out for, because she doubted that door would stay closed forever.
