28th Cylus, 718
after this and then, this

"Papa?" Vega lifted her gaze from her continuous staring at the legs which had always served her well at the sound of someone coming in and she looked surprised and pleased in equal measure to see him. Pushing her hands down onto the bed where she sat, she lifted herself up a little but she could barely move without it hurting and her legs were completely immobilised. "Papa!" Joq'an's long legs carried him to her in two steps and he wrapped her in an embrace, albeit a careful and gentle one. Vega felt her father's arms around her and she realised that she was crying too late to stop it. "Little Eva-bud," he whispered to her, just holding her and stroking her hair as she sobbed against his chest. "It will be alright, my bud, let it be, let it out." His whispered words to her were in Rakahi, soft spoken enough that only she heard them anyhow, but she clung to him and did just what he said, allowing herself to cry for the first time.

"Tell me, what happened?" Joq'an said and he sat, perched on her bed as Vega began to speak, sniffing slightly as she got herself under control. "There was a party on the docks, Papa, an' Arlo an' I got separated. I was sellin' some of the boxes I've been makin' an' we jus' got split. Then, there was this scream an' I went to look, but I couldn't find nothin' an' then there was this yellow stuff in the air what knocked everyone out. When I woke up, I 'ad a collar round my neck an' I was chained up." Joq'an breathed in through his teeth and continued to stroke her hair. The pair of them were there, her sitting on the bed with her broken legs sticking out in front of her, him sitting and simply cradling his daughter.

"Papa," Vega said and in the saying it she sounded young. "They took all the women, an' I broke the chains on me, an' the women either side, but they were mages, an' there were these.. well, like hands, I 'spose, that grabbed me by the legs an' dragged me right through the earth. That's what snapped my knee an' leg." He nodded and held her there. He didn't speak, simply sat and cradled her whilst being careful not to hurt her or move her. He knew his daughter, in the way that perhaps only a parent ever can and he knew that there was something more. His mind was racing as to what else they could have subjected his only child to and he was more or less ready to go and find every one of the Elements and kill them if it was what he was thinking. But, of course, it was not.

"Did they hurt you, Eva? The men?" It was the closest he could come to asking her what he wanted to and as she shook her head the expression on the older man's face spoke of the relief of a father as his arms around her tightened. Yet, there was something else, he was sure of it and so he waited to hear what she would say. But sitting there, in the bed which was already starting to feel like a prison, Vega had rested her head against her father and as he sat and patiently waited, he realised that his daughter had, in fact, fallen asleep.

He smiled and settled in, quite content to let her stay there as long as she needed to. Sleep, after all, was where she would heal.

Vega's skin has a reflective metallic sheen with a red glow. Her eyes still swirl biqaj colours, but one colour is always bright red which glows like fire. She has a bright red glow in her chest, situated directly under the mark of a heart (Daia mark) in the middle of a glowing silver dragon on her chest (Xiur). She's unnaturally warm to the touch

She woke up with a start after less than a break. "Arlo?" Papa, what are... ow." She'd refused the powder earlier, which acted as a painkiller and that meant that she was in quite a lot of pain. Equally, though, Vega didn't want to be drowsy - she wanted to feel and experience life in it's entirety and that meant not being half asleep for it. "You should put pillows and blankets either side of you, here, that will mean that you do not turn to the side." Vega looked at him and sighed slightly. "An' while I know that's right, Papa, it's just one more step to you tyin' me down here so I can't move at all." Joq'an looked at her and spoke in a quiet and yet firm voice, his own eyes a single solid blue which was a particular shade his daughter recognised. "If it is the difference between you walking again or not, Eva, then I will tie you twice so that you are secure." She smiled at him and shook her head. "You don't need to do that, Papa. It's a'right." She smiled at him and he, in turn, knew her expression when she replied. "I'm plenty motivated to keep goin', to walk again, it's all good."

Joq'an reached up, putting her hair behind her ear. "Something is worrying you, Eva. You should speak it," he said and he would continue, but she finished for him with a smile. "Silence is where worries grow into anxieties, Eva. From there, they become enormous monsters which you can not fight alone. When you speak them, they grow smaller!" Joq'an smiled at her and shook his head. She had always been this way and the two of them had always shared a relationship like this. Yet, as she looked at her father, Vega knew how worried he was, how concerned for her he felt. Resting her head against him she spoke in a quiet voice. "I'm a'right, Papa, I really am. I'm gonna do it. No matter what it takes, I will."

He smiled and kissed her forehead. "I don't doubt it, Eva. You are worried about Arlo?" Vega felt herself tense then wince as her body complained at that and finally she nodded. "What are your worries, Eva? One at a time, let us lay them bare." Joq'an knew his daughter of old and he knew that the thing to do here was to challenge her logic, to make her argue herself out of it. "The first time I met 'im, Papa, I liked him. An' that night, he fell into my dream. I think Jesine kept pushin' our dreams together because she saw what we didn't. Straight off." Joq'an listened, not speaking for a moment while Vega explained. "An' I remember the moment I realised I was in love with 'im, but I don't know when it 'appened. But a long time before we got ourselves together." Sighing, she rested her head against her father's chest and was silent for a moment.

"I was 'orrible to him earlier, Papa. An' he didn't deserve it." She felt her father smile and a frown darkened Vega's face. "It's not funny, Papa. I jus' want to protect him. He saw it all 'appen, an' no one should see that." Joq'an felt her tense as she realised that she was saying something she shouldn't and he remained quiet. Vega thought for a moment and then she sat up and looked at him. "I died," she said and her father's expression spoke of shock, surprise and a slowly dawning horror. "What do you mean, Eva?" Vega looked at him and held on to his hands. "I mean I died, Papa. I met the twins, Pier an' Pre, an' I was judged. Sort of. An' I came back. They burned me an' Arlo saw it. I was dead for a couple of bits, far as I can tell, an' he saw it. An' he is not alright, but I can't get through to him cos he just watched me die an' now I'm broken." And she was suggesting that he should go and bump uglies with someone else, in case it all got too much for him, she thought and she wanted to curl up and die at just how stupid she could be.

Well aware of how hard this was for her father, Vega held on to his hands and she smiled at him. "I'm alright, Papa, I'm right here. It was harder for him than me," other than the melting flesh and popping eyeballs, she thought but decided not to say. Joq'an pulled her to him and simply held on to her, kissing her on the head. After a few moments, he mumbled against her, "Eva, child why did you not tell me?" Vega smiled and shrugged slightly. "I thought you 'ad enough to deal with, what with the shattered knee an' broken leg, Papa." He shook his head and kissed her forehead. It was no wonder she was worried about Arlo, he thought. He had watched her mother die, after all, and as far as Joq'an was concerned, alright was not what Arlo Creede was.

He opened his mouth to tell Eva just that, when there was a gentle knock on the door. "Anyone here?" Huw's voice called in and her cousin walked in with a smile on his face, though it hid his worried expression not at all. "I hope, Eva Lei'nox, that the other guy is worse, hm?" He moved over to the other side of the bed and kissed her forehead before sitting down. "How are you?" Looking to Joq'an he frowned slightly. "Uncle, are you alright?" He looked, Huw thought, like he'd seen a ghost.

A few bits later, after Vega had repeated the story and Huw had asked questions, the three of them sat in silence. The two men wore twin expressions of shock on their faces and Vega was doing her best to comfort them both. "Look. I'm fine. An' actually, you know, I mean, it's a good story, innit?" No? No, probably not, she decided as the pair of them turned to look at her. "A'right, maybe not but it 'appened. An' I'm fine. Look." She held out her hand for Huw's and he took it. Quick as she could, she moved her hand and pinched his arm. He let out a yelp of pain and a dark frown furrowed his brow. "You! That hurt!" Vega nodded and smiled. "I know. It was meant to. But tell me, did it 'urt any more or any less than it did last time I did it?" He shook his head, not willing to answer but the point was made. "What did they say to you, Eva?" Joq'an asked and Vega smiled at him. Her expression told him that she wouldn't share that, but she spoke a reply. "They couldn't decide which one of them thought I was best. They were like, 'I think she's the best', an' then the other was 'no, I do!' It was embarrassin' really." Joq'an shook his head and smiled at her. It was more than fair enough, that must have been a very private thing.

Huw, however, was thinking and did not speak, had not spoken for some time other than to exclaim at her pinch. "Eva. He saw you... saw this happen to you?" Vega nodded and her myriad gaze met that of her cousin. Huw nodded his head, as though some communication had gone between them, Joq'an thought and he realised that it had. "I will take him out for a drink. We will complain about you, if I can get a cross word about you to leave his lips," Huw said and Vega smiled a rather mirthless smile. "After to-trial, it shouldn't be too much bother." Huw glanced at his uncle and then back to Vega. "What did you say?"

"Well, it started when I suggested that we get a new crew mate, since I'm out of the picture. If there's a storm or somethin', he's gonna want to make sure I'm safe, an' that leaves the two of you," Huw shrugged slightly. It made sense. Two people to crew a schooner was possible, but it was not good and he and Joq'an could use the help. "Why is that a bother?" Vega looked vaguely uncomfortable and Joq'an, who had been simply holding her and listening to the two of them speak suddenly had a flash of inspiration, born from knowing his daughter. "You suggested a woman didn't you?" Vega nodded, somewhat miserably. "Who?" Joq'an asked and Vega mumbled her response. "Fi, the twins sister by law."

Huw whistled. "Has he seen her? She's gorgeous." Vega frowned darkly at him. "We didn't get that far, no. He wasn't keen on the idea. Want me to put a good word in for you next time I'm chattin' with her?" Huw's expression surprised her, but it didn't exactly sink in. Later, when she was on her own and thinking about it, she would realise what she had seen. "Eva... what are you thinking?" Huw asked and Vega scowled at him. "She isn't," Joq'an said, stroking his daughter's hair to stop her snapping at him. "She is not thinking, she is feeling. She feels broken, not good enough and she is worried that he will be unhappy. The thought of that is too much for her to bear, so she seeks to put it right." Vega looked up in surprise at her father and Huw turned equally surprised multi-hued eyes to him, too. Joq'an laughed a deep and honest laugh. "You children, you think I have never lived. You are a foolish girl to think such things. He has earned the right for you not to more than once now."

"I know, Papa. I know in my 'ead, but he's hurt an' I just wanna put it right." Joq'an smiled and nodded. "You will. Only you can." She looked at him and smiled, her hand moving to touch her father's cheek. She'd have said something if Huw hadn't spoken in exactly that moment. "Probably can't do that by whoring him out, though. You might want to say sorry for that," he looked at his cousin with a challenge in his eyes. "You idiot." Joq'an looked at him and smiled and Vega let out a snort of laughter. "Shurrup. Yer just jealous cos if he'd gone for it, she'd 'ave 'ad him, 'an she thinks you're called 'enry." Huw sat back and looked at her with a challenge in his eyes. "Idiot," he said and he stood, "and until you get up and tell me different, I will believe it."

Vega flung a pillow at him, which he moved out of the way of easily, her temper rising at the way that he stood there, all mocking and superior. "I bloody well will, you jus' wait!" Huw smiled and nodded and, next to his daughter, Joq'an looked at his nephew with pride. "I'm sure you will, Eva. But until you do," Huw said, "it's all just words." With which he walked out. Yes, he decided. Before they left, he was going to go and get drunk with Arlo. Frankly, he thought the young man deserved it.
