• Location • The Devil's Advocate

A popular pub for students and working-class citizens.

Stronghold of education and learning, this fortress is in one of the coldest areas of Idalos and home to many knowledge seekers in a variety of disciplines. However, unknown to most, below the city are those who suffer for the sake of science. While all are welcome, not everyone will be treated as they expect.

The Devil's Advocate

The Devil's Advocate

However much the Directorate tries to control the consumption of alcohol within the city, they are against the concept of a prohibition and are keen to avoid the black market sales of drugs and alcohol. As such, they turn a blind eye to the goings on within the rooms of the Devil's Advocate, as long as the money earned is fed back into the wealth of the city so that all the residents enjoy the profit (which would not be the case on the black market). The owners are careful not to become too confident in their freedoms, however, and keep a careful watch on all of their punters, regular and new.

Made from wood which is now rotting in places and stone which has begun to crumble, it is a ramshackle building that many of the population pass quickly, as if it might collapse on them as they pass. The well-to-do often go out of their way to avoid passing it, as if the constantly lingering stench of stale alcohol might follow them home if they walk too close. In the centre of the pub is a wood burner, looked after as required by Videnese law, which is probably the most valuable item in the Devil's Advocate. The floor constantly remains sticky from spilt alcohol, as if the barmaids have log given up attempting to have any pride in the establishment in which they work. Hot food is not served: it is the one thing that the authorities shut down for it's appalling conditions. However salted meat and bread is on offer for those looking for a light meal.

Once, all of the stools and benches in the pub would have been covered in furs, and many still are. However the furs are now matted, or worn to the skin, or ripped. It's probably preferable to sit on a stool with no covering, if we're all honest with each other. Some stools and benches are shorter than others, or are wobbly from being used in bar fights and then put back together inexpertly by the pub staff. The tables are in much the same condition: infrequently washed, they are now stained and sticky.

Once it was rumoured that there was a single room in the rafters, which was used as an impromptu private 'function' room. One girl would service the room at a time, for any gentleman whou would pay the owner for it's use, and the girl's time. All that remains of this supposed second room, however, are the rafters which hold up the roof of the building. Few actually believe that such a room existed: the Directorate would never allow such filth to happen in a public house, surely.

Linus is a frugal, yet fair boss, though were he in a less dangerous city, one might suspect he would be likely to cheat employees out of their wages if they could not do the calculations. He only invests money in the pub when he is forced to, which shows in its derelict state. Having said that, he is very careful about who he employs, often taking on female students at the Academy in need of work: his one rule is a need for streets marts, and the ability to keep up with the clientele. For all of his faults, he protects the girls in his employ.
