28th Trail of Cylus
Unknown Bell
Arc 717
It wasn't easy to brave the unforgiving cold of Cylus. The perpetual twilight and absence of sunlight insulated the world in its frigid temperatures that made hunting a challenge for the members of the budding Ankila tribe. Whipping wind brought with it punishing snow drifts now and again that burned at their cheeks. Even Tala, a wolf familiar born for the harshest of conditions in the wild, kept her body low as she moved through the tall snow that made every step more arduous than the last. The trek was as mentally taxing as it was physical. When the group set out for their near-daily hunt the trial had been almost a blissful one. The forest was quiet. The air was still. It seemed to be the way of the world to punish those that took good weather for granted during the colder seasons.

"We should turn back!" Alexa hollered over the next gust of wind toward Sky with squinting eyes and arms wrapped about herself. The exhale of air from her lungs manifested as a thick plume of white vapor. A shiver wracked her body. She closed her eyes as though by sheer will and determination she could convince her body it wasn't truly so cold. Then it happened. A slow, steady warmth spread throughout her being, dashing out along her limbs to bring even numb fingers and toes back to life. Her golden eyes flashed open and her brow rose. Arms slowly dropped from her body as though the entire sensation of the gripping cold had been little more than a delusion long forgotten. Even the black wolf at her side seemed briefly confused by the Velduris-marked girl's hardiness against the elements.

"Come!" she shouted once more to her savage companion, electing to take change than hear any potential protest from the man. He might've been a cave-dweller that resisted all civilized conventions that would've given him an advantage in this weather, but that didn't mean he wouldn't suffer all the same. "We'll get back faster if we take the pass!" Alexa pivoted and began to trudge again. Slowly the cold was beginning to creep through her clothes again. In a few bits they'd slipped through a narrow pass that temporarily shielded them from the elements. However, they were back in the wintry world soon after.

"Something is here," Tala warned through their connection in a way that brought the Burhan girl's brow knitting together. She glanced down toward the animal with narrow, golden eyes. "What do you mean by that?" she inquired, finding their silent communication far easier than her shouting her words over the wind anyhow. The black wolf's nose flared, and rather than wait for an immediate answer, Karem's favored tapped into her familiar's senses to experience the discrepancy for herself. First she smelled little as the cold hindered her senses. The farther they trekked, however, the more potent it became. "Is that...?"
"Wolf," Tala confirmed before zipping off in the direction of the stronger scent. Alexa spun around to offer Sky an apologetic expression rather than an explanation before she followed suit. She nearly lost the dark creature to the storm before she came upon the scene that garnered so much urgency.

A massive wolf, larger than one Alexa had seen before, laid still behind the inadequate cover of a fallen log. Its grey pelt billowed violently in the wind but the body did not stir. Its eyes stared unseeing. The Velduris-marked woman frowned and dared to crouch beside the horse-sized beast. She even dared to reach out a hand to stroke it, only to find a body that was yet warm despite the cold. A recent death? Alexa deducted uncertainly. Yet the scent of the fallen Krome wolf was not all that lingered. She blinked and searched for Tala, whose nose was already pointed curiously at the source. Nestled against the animal was a trio of pups. "Oh!" the Burhan girl exclaimed dumbly. The three wriggled tight to their deceased mother with occasional yips. Alexa's eyed them mournfully. "How old are they do you think?" she asked Tala before and adjusted herself closer to them. They seemed to ignore the intruders in their quest for warmth. "Maybe seven or ten weeks. No more," the wolf guessed and shook out her pelt.

Without thought the Burhan girl tore her furry outer layer from her body. "What are you doing?! You'll freeze." Alexa gingerly reached out and wrapped the thick fur about the deep grey pup closest to her, wrapping it up in the warmth and holding it tight to her body. It yipped and squirmed in her embrace. "No I won't." She closed her eyes and focused on her internal temperature deliberately this time. After a few trills of concentration, warmth filled her once more and the pup seemed more inclined to cling to her. She glanced over her shoulder and called into the wind."Sky! Help me!"

What he thought was a hunt turned out to be a nightmare; firstly they found no prey, and secondly they were hardly able to navigate their way back. The Snow covered everything, and he lost all sense of direction in that moment. The wind chilled him to the bone; he was already sick, and felt hot only to be relieved by the cool air. Yet, he could not shake the coughing and although he was sick he did not seem to be affected in terms of strength or durability. Thus he decided to continue their adventures despite the fact that Venom told him that he should not. The Savage needed rest, but did not provide himself with the opportunity to get any rest at all. He was no coward, and he certainly would not sit idle while his women went off and hunted for him. He suffered through the cold temperatures with his korowai wrapped tightly around his body.

Alexa took charge and did not allow him the opportunity to protest. They were going to find their way home, and escape the wind that made the weather even more cold. Yet, the moment they began their journey he wanted to leave. She somehow managed to endure the cold far better than he did, and was obviously far more durable than he. The Savage did not complain though, and decided to remain diligent through the difficult times. The snow fell, and although it was beautiful they were on borrowed time. Sky did not like the idea of frostbite, and the possibility of losing flesh or having to remain cave-ridden for several trials. She obviously spoke to her wolf, and while it was out of sight it certainly was not out of mind.

They diverged from the path they took initially, and decided to continue in a different direction than he expected. Yet, the moment he expected them to stop the journey only continued, and step by step he trudged through the snow. The further they went the higher the snow seemed to rise against his heels; the soles of his “shoes” were somewhat thin. He felt the cold temperature against his feet, and the intense string of the cool temperature against his warm flesh. She had better be correct in her assumption of direction, and if she was not he would heavily reprimand her for it later. Sky continued to stand by as she spoke with Tala regarding the animal a few paces ahead of them. She wanted to know its age, and it was obviously young considering its size.

She was obviously a fool, and with the way that she reached out toward the pup she intended to freeze. She wanted his assistance, and Sky was hesitant yet he did not intend to reveal that he was sick. He would surely be in the cave for a few trials following this journey. His illness only progressed and escalated with the extended periods of time he spent outside. The Savage approached slowly, and took the animal from Alexas arms. His korowai was far thicker, and the weight was significantly more than her own; he was far more capable of keeping it warm than she was. The moment that he grabbed the pup he tucked it beneath the korowai. He felt the animal tremble violently in the presence of the warmth, and Sky coughed several times before he spoke.

He attempted to speak slowly, and turned about only to lead the way back. Common sense told him where to go, and despite the fact that he was not the best navigator he noticed several trees along the path they previously traveled. Their footprints were still fresh upon the snow, and he endured the cold to the best of his ability.

So absorbed was she in her recent discoveries that she hadn't noticed how quickly Sky had deteriorated over time due to exposure. His stuttered demand brought a tightening to the Burhan girl's brow with concern. She cast her golden eyes toward him, pressed her lips together, and then looked out toward the direction the cave surely laid if Tala's senses were to be trusted. Snow continued to swirl along the path ahead. A thick plume of vapor shot past her lips when she sighed at the revelation of their plight. "Alright," Alexa conceded without hesitation. She vigorously rubbed her palms together and steadied herself before she committed to her task. Both hands scooped up the remaining two pups and tucked them tight to her body beneath her own korowai cloak. The pups wriggled but the sureness of her hold against her ribs prevented either from breaking free. "Let's go."

A final glance was given toward the pups' fallen mother wherein she noticed the pool of blood leaking out from under the animal. Perhaps when the weather cleared she could venture back out to discover what injury laid on the grounded flank that brought on the Krome Wolf's demise. Until then, her only mission was to return Sky and the wolf cubs back to the warm safety of the cave.

Alexa fell just behind Sky with her head ducked against the wind. "Make sure I don't fall off course please," she implored her wolf wordlessly before slipping within her own mind. Her thoughts settled on the temperature of her body, and after a few bits, it was the only thing her brain absently occupied itself with other than the constant movement of her feet. It was a constant give-and-take with the elements. One moment she was perfectly content. Then in the next a gust of furious wind would throw her off-balance again, creating a paradox that was a challenge to handle for one only discovering how to use the ability. At least the eventual lack of squirming on the part of the pups was a good sign.

Before long their tracks did indeed lead the trio back to the refuge provided by the cave. The difference in temperature alone when they entered was astonishing. A simple fire toward the back of the dwelling filled the space with a warmth she'd almost forgotten. She shook the snow from the surface of her korowai and exhaled a sigh of relief when it occurred to her she no longer needed to focus on regulating her body heat. Predictably, Aomaru shook his head upon noticing their arrival and stormed toward them in a serious of excited hoots. He wrapped an arm about one of Alexa's legs as though to hug it before rushing to embrace his real life: Sky. She took the temporary distraction as an opportunity to venture toward the back of the cave to sit criss-crossed against the cave wall. Only then did she drop the pups into her lap.

Her black wolf familiar eased toward her with head low and ears up. A sneeze from one of the small creatures elicited a head turn from Tala that made Alexa breathe a short laugh. "What will you do with them?" the wolf inquired as her snout twitched to drink in the new scents. Karem's favored furrowed her brow at the question. "Take care of them," she stated as though the answer was obvious. "Karem would not will these motherless pups to die, so I shall see that they survive." Tala shook stray snowflakes from her pelt before curling up beside her. "A bold undertaking for someone that's supposed to be making a get-away eventually." Alexa bit her lip.

The pups wasted no time locating the warm body of the resting wolf, clambering off the Mixed Blood's lap to nestle against something as familiar as wolf fur. Tala reared her head to eye the pair with surprised blue eyes. Alexa used the moment to rouse herself from her comfortable sitting position to venture toward the suffering savage. "What happened out there? Are you alright?"

Sky fought hard to stay on his feet all the way until they got to the cave, and the moment they did he fell to the ground on his rump. He was hot, and he noticed that his forehead had several beads of sweat across it. Following the fall he released his grip upon the pup that he held in his arms, and it immediately proceeded to explore the small space of the cave. It sniffed, and walked with its head down until it approached Alexa. Obviously the wolf was somewhat more attracted to her side of the cave, and perhaps it was because of how wonderful her scent was. The night hat he rested in her lap it was some of the best sleep he had in arcs. He loved the way that she toyed with his hair, and how she caressed the flesh upon his visage.

He coughed and attempted to speak to Alexa in order to congratulate her in today's victory. They might not have successfully completed a hunt, but at least they managed to bring home a few pups. Animals were important, and were generally more resourceful than humans were. Yet, they were incredibly difficult to train and often even more difficult to deal with. Some animals had the tendency to be stubborn, and others simply attack and kill their owners when they come of age. Sky did not know whether or not these animals would do the same. The Savage was always skeptical of new things; especially things that were alive.

“Alexa, I want to know what these are.. I need you to tell me, and we will keep them all. Yet, this situation is becoming far more difficult than I anticipated. We will need to hunt quite a bit more now in order to keep the three of us alone alive. Now we have new guests, and although they are wonderful and beautiful creatures we will have a difficult time feeding them. If we feed all of them an extra kill per trial they should be fine. The question is what happens when they get large enough to hunt on their own. Will they hunt us and kill us? “
He questioned her and sincerely did want to know whether or not their lives were at risk. After-all Sky was the chief, and was the one who made the larger decisions despite his weakened state.

Yet, after his speech he began to fall to the cave ground from his upright position. He removed the rather heavy and large Korowai only to rest beneath it with his head against the surface of the cave floor. A position that he found to be uncomfortable, but he had slept like this for majority of his life; despite the fact that it brought a slight pain to his skull he did not care. Venom rushed to his side, and immediately placed a steady hand upon his forehead. She swallowed hard, and her jaws clenched as she felt the massive difference in temperature of his forehead.

“Chief, you are sick. You have a fever, and your body is overheating. I know that this may sound crazy, but I am taking that cloak off of you. Right now you need to be less hot.. You can die!”
She spoke aloud to him, and directed her attention toward Alexa while she tended to the pups. Sky inhaled and exhaled heavily only to cough several consecutive times. His lethroda aura expanded as she was not very far away and he could still reach her. The Aura latched itself onto her and he began to transmit several things in a sequence. “Care for him, Save him, Help Venom” he continued to transmit over, and over again.

The final pup had ventured far from the savage man in favor of the Velduris-blessed Mixed Blood. Its tiny nose twitched beside her leg before it gave a yip and stumbled toward the scent of its resting kin. Alexa gave the small creature a pat as it passed her before tending to Sky's cough-ridden interrogation. "They're wolves, Sky. Their mother was far bigger than any wolf I've ever seen. Whatever sort they are, I never saw their likeness in Burhan," she answered simply. Her fingers worked free the korowai cloak about her shoulders, which she then shook out before laying it out to dry beside the nearby fire. "For now they're small. Love them. Train them. Treat them with kindness. Don't give them a reason to desire to bite the hand that feeds," she reasoned as though it could possibly be so easy to raise and discipline three wild animals. Nonetheless, that was exactly what she planned to do. Succeed or fail, she had no intentions of permitting any of the wolves within Karem's domain to see harm done to them. Her hands extended out toward the flames. "There will be far less to fear from this forest should we earn their loyalty."

It wasn't until Venom's concerned voice turned to a shrill echo about the cave that it occurred to Alexa something was wrong. Her brow knit and she turned from the warmth of the fire to fixate her gaze upon the young healer resting her hand upon Sky's forehead. The Burhan native ventured forward thoughtlessly until she was crouched at the savage man's opposite side. The back of her hand found his forehead, but just as Venom had assessed, the scorching fever felt like fire upon her skin. Had she scavenged a bird's egg from a nest she might've been able to crack and fry it upon his brow. The moment was ironic in a way. Half the season she'd spent her time building pitfalls once intended to bring on his demise. Now Ankila's healer was warning a natural phenomenon could very take steal him away from this world. Freedom at last? Her time to ruminate upon the budding situation and how she felt about it was squashed in an instant. Soon after she felt her thoughts jump with more than just expected urgency.

Care for him. Save him. Help Venom, the ideas flooded her one after another, simple yet straight-forward. She pursed her lips and sat back on her heels. An alien anxiety gripped her and her golden stare drifted from Sky's sweat-ridden frame to Venom's eyes. "What is this illness? Will he live?" came her rapid-fire inquiries. Aomaru, Sky's beloved mandrill, teetered over with gentle hoots. Surely the seriousness of familiar voices and the sense of alarm filling the cave had clued him in that something wasn't right. The monkey wormed his way in among the bodies surrounding his owner. His beady eyes set themselves upon Sky's weakened body. He plopped himself down and his palms gently tapped upon the cave-dweller's torso with soft hoots. Then he turned his gaze toward Alexa and all the suggestions transferred into her head were affirmed all over again, almost as though it were the first day they'd all met all over again. Save him.

Alexa rose and returned to the fire. She whipped the korowai cloak back around her shoulders and tied it tight. Her hand-axe was slipped into her belt and one of her game bags was slung around her shoulder. "What can I do, Venom? Tell me what you need me to find and I'll find it. Just tell me what things look like and where to find them." She trudged to the mouth of the cave and waited only for instruction from the healer. Tala lifted her head to look toward the Burhan native, but Alexa firmly shook her head. She needed someone she trusted to remain to look after the Krome wolf pups.

The moment the others found themselves at his side; Sky looked at them both, and then to Aomaru who tapped away at his chest. The Savage continued to turn his head from left to right, and he breathed heavily several times. Venom simply watched, and began to remove the Korowai from the top portion of his body. She did not want the thick cloak making him too hot; Sky did not realize that he made himself even more hot than he already had been. Venom spoke aloud, and made an attempt to educate the pair on what it meant to fall ill. “Sickness starts in the body, but it truly begins in the mind. Being ill like this is common, but being that he went missing for eight trials I imagine that is where this came from. He braved the cold, and dark until he arrived here. With that much exposure to the elements I am surprised he came back at all. The first part of sickness that is in the body is easy to take care of, and the best thing to do is let this run its course. For now we have to let him rest, but I want you to get me a lot of grass. I need as much as you can bring me, and a vine.” Venom concluded her lengthy speech.

Sky successfully manipulated Alexa again, and that was made obvious when she asked what could be done in order to assist him. Perhaps the usage of the blessing came with quite a few advantages as well as disadvantages. Yet, he had not quite seen the disadvantage occur and simply wanted this illness to pass despite the fact that it might require a lengthy period of time. The pups began to roam and play with one another; they were obviously related and knew one another. Majority of the wolves even looked quite a bit alike, and were very curious creatures. They searched the cave with their snouts practically attached to the floor, and continued to follow Alexa as if she was their mother.

Sky coughed several times, and simply waited for another recommendation from Venom. She continued to ask The Savage question after question. “Are you in pain?” She beckoned him and Sky could hardly speak; thus he decided to simply nod his head in agreement.

“ Your head, is that what hurts? ” Venom asked yet another question almost as if she wanted to interrogate him. The truth of the matter was that she simply wanted to gather information. Sky raised a brow, but he knew that lying would not assist him at all. Despite the fact that he absolutely hated appearing weak; Sky nodded his head yet again and continued to breathe heavily. “You are breathing hard, Chief. Does it feel like something is inside your lungs when you breathe? Does it hurt to breathe at all?” She asked again, and Sky simply nodded only to cough again. The cough this time made such a fact obvious, and although his lungs did not particularly hurt he did have quite a bit of mucus in them.

“We need to prop his head up on the grass that you bring me, and make sure that the vine is flexible so that we can bind it together.” Venom commanded Alexa yet again.

"You need me to get you...grass?" Alexa asked incredulously with furrowed brow. For a moment the seriousness of the situation vanished. If she didn't know better, she might've assumed Venom was playing some kind of joke on her or perhaps testing whether she was paying attention to her words. The Burhan native blinked several times at the healer before casting her gaze toward the outside. Sure enough a healthy layer of snow still remained upon the ground. A great deal of digging through the white powder would be necessary just to get to a level in which one might expect to find grass. Yet any that she found she suspected would either be too short or too sodden to be of any use. Alexa cast her golden eyes back toward the healer and firmly shook her head. "I'll find you a vine but forget the grass." She glanced down toward Sky where he breathed heavily while his mandrill remained in distress at his side. She pressed her lips together. "I'll think of something." Alexa turned on her heels and made haste for the mouth of the cave.

The only pause that came was when she heard the sound of multiple claws clicking against the cave floor behind her. "No, you all stay," she turned around and briefly commanded to the pups tilting their heads curiously at her. Tala continued to advance toward her flank as she always had. "You stay too, Tala."
"What?" the wolf familiar inquired with disbelief. Her icy blue stare bore deep into Alexa's gaze. The Burhan native shook her head again and spoke her command once more. "Stay. I need you to keep the pups within the cave. Look after them. This is not a debate. Please just do it," Karem's favored implored the animal before she set off into ruthless embrace of Cylus again. The wind wasted no time in harassing her, billowing the ends of her cloak and turning her skin to goose flesh. Mind made up and purpose set, Alexa braved the cold and trudged through the snow with newfound vigor.

It took a break before she found the first vine. It was long and wiry, spiraling around the tree like a small snake preparing to attempt to strangle much larger prey. She took a moment to exhale a thick plume of vapor into the air before positioning herself before the tree with her hand-axe. She beat the edge of her weapon against the body of the vine near the bottom of the tree trunk to free it. Then she tucked the hand-axe back into her belt and leaped up to snag a hold of it. Her weight alone wouldn't force the vine to give away from the tree, and thus she planted a foot against the trunk for leverage as she heaved. Eventually it indeed snapped and she dropped down against the snow along with the vine. Within moments she could feel the cold snow seeping into her clothing and threatening to chill her flesh. Alexa clenched her jaw and quickly found her feet. She wound the vine up into a small heap and headed back toward the cave.

Snow blew about her boots and the blistering cold wind upon her face burned her cheeks red. Still she trekked, taking a moment now and then to pause and will her body temperature back to normal before she froze. Using the ability was taxing. By the time she made it back to the safety of the dwelling, she all but collapsed before the sick man and healer. "Here," Alexa huffed, handing Venom the length of vine before dropping beside them on her knees. Before the healer could demand to know what the huntress intended to substitute the grass for, she raised a hand as if to silence the woman while she caught her breath. "Grass. Too wet. Too cold. Wouldn't puff up enough to be comfortable." A few more breaths and her words were almost completely even again. She could feel the ache in her legs coming on from battling the piling snow. "Pelts. I was going to make leggings with some of them, but they'll work. They're better than the floor at least."

Alexa rose and moved to the back of the cave where she'd stored most of what she'd gathered or manufactured from her hunts. She chose a few of the larger pelts, like those from deer and the juvenile bear they'd slain, which she brought back to Venom for her use. Then she knelt beside Sky again while her fingers worked free the tie that kept the korowai upon her shoulders. "Is there anything else I can do?" The cloak slipped from her back the huntress wasted little time shaking the snow from it and then letting it rest beside the fire to dry. The wolf pups ventured toward her to sniff at her boots, offering curious yips now and then before Tala herded them back to the far corner of the cave. Instead Alexa found herself sitting down between Sky and Aomaru. She comfortingly stroke the fur of the upset ape that couldn't understand why his master could not rise.

Overview:

Story An interesting and well written story, which obviously you ended before you wanted to, but still was fine. I've given you 10 devotion to Karem, because Alexa did care for those wolf pups, but the thread became more about caring for Sky and you wouldn't be able to have the Krome Wolf pups as "yours" without a lot more work on Alexa's part ~ and a lot more risk. I really liked the clever use of your Velduris ability, too - really well thought out.
Structure Your writing style is lovely ~ it's a pleasure to read your threads.

Please do PM me if you've got any questions or I might have missed anything. If Sky returns, then I will of course add his review in here. Thanks!
