[The Westride Plains] Farmer Unions Have No Names (Lecia)

Sometime during the Trial 10 of Cylus

The deep black twilight of Cylus had engulfed the world for nearly ten trials thus far, leaving The Farmland Plains desolate and devoid of life. Black ice covered the otherwise fertile fields of fields in the vicinity of Etzos. Nothing dared sprout from the ground, not even the hardiest plants. It was the exact definition of hell for a red-blooded farmer, making life incredibly challenging on multiple fronts.

The weaker and younger livestock would collapse during these times, causing the prices on the market to increase drastically. Only the strongest and hardiest of the horses and cattle would survive, making it an easy process to determine which individual breeds and horses would be allowed to reproduce for the upcoming season. It was a process that was pressingly needed by the Etzosi military as they were building a cavalry wing. The State was constantly pressuring individual farmers to breed all the horses that survived Cylus and were paying more to make lists of each attribute. The level of determination from the State on these matters was great, leaving a great yoke of burden upon the shoulders of the farmers.

To make matters worse, the incentive that thieves and bandits had to steal horses increased dramatically during these hellish times. The State was currently so corrupt that they were buying up horses with scantily questioning the source. Pouching camps began popping up just outside of Etzori jurisdiction on the other side of The Westride River; there they would change the brands on the horses. On top of all these hidden systematic corruption, Etzori military leaders openly ignored their righteous duty to protect the interests of the farmers; the bandits would eventually be slain and/or the gold would return to the economy somehow, it did not matter to them.

"The corruption in Etzos will be it's undoing," Brundt Blackfoot grumbled in the circle of torch lit faces. Blackfoot was a dark, grim man with a long gray beard. His family had been proudly farming the plains for several generations. The circle of concerned farmers were all men, except for one young, red-headed woman. They stood together upon the frozen ground they had vowed to til until the end of their days.

Brundt Blackfoot slowly turned his gaze around the circle in disdain, "It has always been up to the common man in Etzos to set matters straight. We need to band together. This is war now. We must stop these bandits and secure our livelihoods from the State,"

An eerie quietness swept over them as no one wanted to speak up yet for some reason. Blackfoot burst in anger after an entire minute, "Come on now, not a single suggestion?"

~~~
Word around Etzos was that their were some farmers who needed help retrieving some stolen horses. Gangui had heard the entire story at the bar and the intricacies of it all. Deciding to help the farmers out was an easy choice for him. Not only was it wrong to destroy the life blood of the mortal civilization, but as a mercenary he wanted no competition around him. Plus, this would be a great time to test out his new plate armor.
Trial 10 of Cylus, Arc 717
Lecia huddled close in the circle of torch lit farmers under the twilight of Cylus. The other locals seemed determined to gather and discuss a plan to deal with the ever encroaching bandit threats. Though she did not have much to lose in terms of livestock she knew the strength that numbers provided and heeded the call to join the other farmers in the region. She fiddled with the handle of the small hatchet she carried with her as one of the men took charge of the discussion. The man, Brundt, seemed more than happy to lead the ragtag group but inspiration was not on his side. He could not inspire the men to action, nor Lecia, she knew that fighting was the only way to end the raids on the farmlands but she also knew the large risks involved as did the others.
Silence permeated the group for a time before Brundt snapped back at their lack of determination. The man was ready to die for the lands he lived on, but was Lecia? She didn't rightfully know herself. The cold air was beginning to make its way through the light clothing she had donned this particular day. Being half Aukari had its perks but she hadn't expected to be out this long and no warmth lasted forever in the chill of Cylus. A shiver ran down her spine as one of the farmers finally gained the confidence to raise his voice. "What do you expect us to do? Every day we will get weaker and the bandits will have taken more of our things!"
Lecia sighed and rubbed her faced with her free hand after listening to the clearly distraught but misguided farmer. She quietly muttered out a few words before pushing her nest of hair away from her face. "What do you think? Only one thing to do, don't be a coward." Now, Lecia was not normally one to speak out and would rather avoid the eyes on her for more than one good reason but she could not take the incompetence of her neighbors. The face of the farmer turned fire red and he looked as though he was going to gut the woman who had dared call him a coward.
"What is she doing here Brundt?!" Complained the now hysteric farmer. "She's just a girl, this is a meeting for men!" Lecia scoffed at the words aimed at her, she was prideful but it would take more than that to break her. "She has every right to be here just as you do," Brundt countered. "I knew her father and he was a right fine fellow. I would like to think the apple does not fall far from the tree...as it were."
Lecia waved off the verbal attack from the farmer, she knew he was just scared and looking for an out. They were all scared. "Did you think of something, then?" Brundt had turned his attention directly onto Lecia and the entire group of farmers followed suit. Panicked for a moment, Lecia quickly looked around at all the faces that were now meeting her gaze. This was not how she had intended the day to go. "Go hire some swords, unless you all know how to fight all of a sudden."
A few of the farmers nodded their heads in agreement. Great. Perfect. She didn't think they would actually buy into her plan, what little plan it was. Cowardice is what she chalked it up to in her head. Why go die yourself when you could send somebody else to do the same?
With enough attention on herself for one day Lecia broke from the group and leaned against a nearby tree. Not that the others had much else to say at the time but at least she could still hear it without being part of it. A few loose pieces of bark broke off from the tree as she began to tap the hatchet against it. How would they ever afford to hire anybody to do their dirty work for them? They weren't nobles, just farmers. She figured she would probably head home soon. It was likely the only intelligent thing that would be produced here was from her own mouth.
[The Westride Plains] Farmer Unions Have No Names (Lecia)
The wild-man felt invincible in the new armor he had recently purchased. Ringed and riveted chain-mail was worn over thick, leather under-padding; he was completely covered in mail, except for shiny plate gauntlets and iron greaves. The chain coif was form fitted over his head and chin, except for the area between his brow and mouth. A bushy, red mustache that was getting long enough to curl at the ends, hung over his lips. Icy blue eyes glowed in the twilight. Gangui was already a large and menacing figure, but the new armor coupled with a flowing fur cloak made him seem even bigger than usual.
Departing from the Great Parhn Gate on horseback, Gangui turned around to look at the gigantic statue that stood to greet citizens and travelers alike. The barbarian nodded at the stone figure as if he had an unspoken pact with the founder of the city. Sword swinging at his side in a fur sheath, he tapped on the hilt as a measure of positivism and good fortune. Double checking his belt, he found his new knife tucked firmly into place. Secured under the saddlebags of provisions, was his short-bow and twelve arrows. Hanging on the horn of the saddle was a length of rope. One final glance at the statue after double checking his equipment, gave him all the confidence that he needed to proceed.
Kicking the horse, he proceeded over the river and into the dark bastion of the twilight plains. The cold light of the moon guided his horse and the winds of destiny pushed his path forward.
Within the hour, the cold winds penetrated his new iron hide. A shiver sent a tingly sensation down his spine as he tried to ignore the frigid temperatures. Everything seemed dead around him. He had yet to see any travelers on the road, which gave the superstitious barbarian ominous and foreboding thoughts. This caused his hyper-vigilance tendencies to switch on. Eyes wide open, he continuously scanned the horizon for any movements. Down the western road that he was traveling on, he finally spotted a band of covered wagons. Straying off the road, Gangui made certain that the armed party did not impede his progress. As they passed each other, the wild-man waved and nodded his head in non-verbal agreement of an uncontested crossing of paths.
Deciding to keep traversing through the fields seemed like a better option now. He didn't know what he was looking for or what to do. In fact, that is when it finally donned on him he hadn't particularly planned his moves. Gangui wasn't one to diddle though and quickly decided on a coarse of action; he would proceed until he met some farmers and collected some information. Fate definitely seemed agreeable this day, because within the hour he spotted a circle of brazen torches near a barn in the distance.
Once Gangui was in ear shot, he hollered, "Hail! I am friend and I request to approach!"
There was buzz of hushed words, followed by an agreeable shout. Urging his horse forward at a slow pace, Gangui finally came into clear view of what was going on. A group of Etzori men had congregated together with a blanket of disgruntled worry upon their faces. They all carried weapons and one with a bow pointed an arrow at him
Swinging his leg over the horse, Gangui dismounted nearly silently despite a heavy foot-fall. Taking two steps forward, the sound of the bow tightening could be heard. Instinctively, he sprawled arms wide with open palms.
"I am known Red Hair!" He spoke in a loud, clear voice and from deep within his stomach, "I heard in the tavern that bandits plague the farmers and I am here seeking information so I can help!"
Trial 10 of Cylus, Arc 717
Lecia spent another break give or take, it was hard to tell with the twilight, waiting to see if any of the other farmers could decide on an action to take. The day was getting colder and colder as the bits passed by so she eventually made her way to a communal fire created to keep the meeting from dispersing because of the elements. A few of the other women were there, the farmer's wives, but Lecia had little to say to them and even less in common. They huddled together passing gossip and talked about a new rhubarb pie recipe. How exciting. She had more in common with the men here. Working the fields, tending to what little animals she had left, and fixed up the farm.
Finally some sound broke through the emptiness that Lecia was experiencing at that moment and snapped her to attention. Some words were being passed back and forth but she couldn't rightfully make them out from where she was. She lifted herself up from her spot in the half frozen grass and patted off the dirt from her skirt before going off to investigate; hatchet in hand.
Lecia had made it over to the group of farmers and saw the source of the commotion, a red headed stranger on horseback. Perhaps this is the beginning of what we need, Lecia thought to herself. The man introduced himself as Red Hair, he was in fact here to help deal with the bandits scouring the countryside. How lucky of them.
Pushing her way through the crowd and to the side of Brundt, Lecia obviously stood out as the only woman in the larger group, the rest still behind at the fire talking their useless talk. "Here you are Brundt. The first sword we need. What a timely arrival." Lecia said just after squeezing through the other men. "Perhaps he could rally more to our cause."
Brundt nodded to Lecia and spoke to the man. "What say you Red Hair? You know of our plight. The farmers here are kind folk and are happy to exchange whatever you need, information included. But tell me something please. If word has spread into the taverns and inns how come Etzos does not send its finest to help the blood of the city?"
Lecia crossed her arms, hatchet in hand and scoffed. "Because they don't care what happens to use...clearly." She locked eyes with the stranger on the horse, clad in armor and armed with blade. Her own red hair fluttered in the cold Cylus wind. "What say you, Red Hair?"
[The Westride Plains] Farmer Unions Have No Names (Lecia)
Gangui stood very still with gauntleted hands on hips and a wide stance. Breathing deeply and noisily, his bushy mustache fluttered on every exhale. The steel mail shimmered as the flames of the brazier danced in consumption; the strong light produced shadows that engulfed the man's back drop from the lights in the great sky. Listening intently to the plight of the farmers, the barbarian was a little slow in recognizing the fear that was emanating from them. He also noticed that they were clueless on how to proceed with the problem, because of the way they chattered on in between each other.
A woman stepped forward who immediately took the man's breathe away. Her beauty was overwhelming, despite being dressed in typical farmer clothing. She was a tiny creature, light skinned with fiery red hair that Gangui's Aukari blood seemed to be attracted too. Lust began to overtake him and he forgot to listen to anything that she even said. Eyes fixated onto her lips and occasionally darted to her bosom. If it wasn't for the chainmail coif and his mustache, they would all be able to see the stupid grin on his face.
Suddenly, Gangui was brought back to reality. They all seemed to be waiting on him to speak. One of the farmers, the one called Brundt, questioned him with a confused look on his face, "Red Hair!?"
Caught off guard, the words jumbled out strangely in a gravely voice. "Uh. Yes. The... Bandit problem... I need to know how they work first. What exactly are they doing? How do they go about stealing your horses?"
Trial 10 of Cylus, 717
The red haired man appeared to stare Lecia down as she spoke to him. A fact she was so very used to at this point. Any moment he would berate her and tell her to shut her mouth, that nothing she had to say mattered. But he didn't say anything, at least, not right away. Maybe the man was slow? Brundt hollered for his response and finally it came.
But it didn't come exactly how Lecia had thought it would. His words came out jagged and slurred, his eyes still locked on her. Oh, so that's what it was. The swordsman wasn't preoccupied finding a way to demean her and he might have not been slow either, though, his eyes said everything she needed to know. She furrowed her brow at the stupid and pointless question he asked. "How do you think?! They come to our lands in numbers, break everything in sight, and take what is ours."
The words spit out of the woman like lava. Her hands were playing with the hatchet in anger, tapping the flat end against her open palm again..and again..and again. Frustrated at the ineptitude of the red haired man Lecia pushed her way back through the crowd and sat down in the grass by one of the fires, which was now empty save for her, everyone else preoccupied with the mercenary.
"Stupid stupid stupid!" Her axe prodded the fire as she yelled to herself. "Why is everyone so stupid? Hur hur..how do they steal things? How do you think?!" Another smack to the fire with her hatchet sent a small bit of burning wood onto her skirt. She stared at the thing for a moment as it was about to engulf the soft fabric. Would her end be with fire? This was a question that passed through her thoughts every day since her fathers passing. She could be fire. she was born with it inside of her so what was the harm. It would be so easy...
She scoffed at her own thoughts and put out the small flame before any real damage was done to her clothing. "Stupid fire..."
[The Westride Plains] Farmer Unions Have No Names (Lecia)
Gangui watched on stoically as the fiery woman burst in outrage. Despite being hidden by his mustache, a grin remained plastered on his face. Icy eyes followed the woman as she pushed through the congregation of farmers. The dramatic temper that followed the woman left a wake of anxiety among them, though they did not speak. After seeing the woman's full figure in movement, Gangui decided that her fiery rage was not only normal, but attractive. The wild man's mother was a full blooded Aukari after all and his father had warned him of a woman's anger. Regardless of his desire to follow the red head, the group of men who stood before him demanded his action first.
A loud of gust of wind blew momentarily, almost extinguishing the torch flames. Shifting his weight around, Gangui waited for the farmers to speak, but none of them did. So he asked the question again, completely ignoring the woman's words, "I need to know exactly how they go about these raids. What direction do they come from?"
Gangui scanned the crowd around him looking at everyone in the eyes, "Are they on foot or horseback?... How many?... What exactly did they destroy?... How many horses did they steal?... Have any of your tried to fight them?..." He showed his gauntleted hands palm open to everyone, waiting for a legitimate response.
A short, yet stocky farmer with gray whiskers and a thick eyebrows stepped forward. With a scowl on his face, he spoke his story, "The most recent attack happened nearly two trials ago... nearly half a dozen of them appeared from the northeast on foot.... They wore dark clothing and had no lanterns. No torches... They broke the the lock on to Jagheger's stable..."
Another farmer stepped forward, this time a much younger man with anger in his eyes, "It was my barn-- I'll say the story! I was sitting out back with my crossbow smoking on my pipe, when all of a sudden these dark figures appeared from the twilight and smashed my lock with a sledge hammer and wedge. It was all quick and planned out like... I didn't have time to do nothing about it until after they swung the doors open... I shot my cross bow at them as they tried to ride away --bareback with no saddle-- with five of my prized meres... I stuck one with the shot, but the others got away.... Had to wake up me boys to chase down the frightened horses who flew during the commotion,"
Ganui nodded his head several times as the man spoke. Concentrating and taking in all the details, the wild-man simply moved onto the next question with no other remark, "How many times has this happened? And was it the same crew?"
Some mumbling occurred within the group before Brundt spoke up, "Jagheher's place would be the 3rd time, Red Hair, all the same way by sneaking into our compounds. The second time they did not expect our crossbow fire so they panicked and burned a shed and killed one of our sons."
"Right!" Gangui echoed their sentiments with a simple bashing of his gauntleted fists, "Very well... they must be very close despite being in hostile country. They must have camps with fires to change the brands for market. Also they will be back again and soon,"
Gangui began walk forward as the crowd backed away from him. Suddenly his tempo changed, revealing the true brutality and political/social ignorance of a half-aukari barbarian. Unlike the crowd in front of him, Gangui was a noble soul and a strong warrior; he just could not understand why did just didn't fight back themselves, "I am sickened that you all haven't taken responsibility for yourselves. You think that the big city over there is going to help you? BAH! Not with such a miniscle problem! You have to play win against these cowards at their own game, there are only six of them and a whole lot more of you!"
Halting his advance about six or eight feet from the fiery red head, Gangui left the final proposition up to woman, "Feed me good all for the rest of Cylus and I'll take care of these thieves!"
Hands out and palms up, he turned his shoulders back to the crowd of farmers, "But you'll all need to help! Because this is unacceptable!!"
[The Westride Plains] Farmer Unions Have No Names (Lecia)
Image
Trial 10 of Cylus, 717
Lecia tried to drown out the words from the red headed stranger as he went on and on questioning the other locals. His voice cut her ears and made them want to ooze blood like a bug who had just been captured by a child and made their play thing. At least she was separated from him, her spot secluded while everyone was surrounding him. But then a shiver ran down the woman's spine. This wasn't from the cold but something else entirely. His voice...was getting closer. Lecia gripped her small hatchet so tightly her knuckles turned white, she dared him to get any closer. The idiot.
Next thing she knew the man could be heard clear as day directly behind her. Her nostrils flared as she spun her head around to lay her eyes back on the oaf that seemed to ask the most stupid questions. The farmer shot fire out of her eyes at the man as he stood before her demanding to be put up for the rest of the season. Lecia rose as quickly to her feet as she could and spat words as venom. "In your dreams oaf! I serve no man his breakfast! Bah!" The fingers of her free hand balled up into a fist then, her arm shaking ever so slightly in disgust and anger.
But then Brundt stepped forward, his hands raised in a peaceful fashion. "Please Lecia..this man is here to help us. We need him, like you said. We need a fighter, we need a champion Lecia." The other farmers began to nod in agreement and whispers began to pass between them. She couldn't believe it. They were really going to try to make her take this man into her home and treat him like a king? Pleads began to bleed through the tension of the moment, begging her to take the man, if only for the season.
The grip on her hatchet almost seemed to threaten to break the thing in two and the nails of her free hand were biting their way into her skin. She took a breathe though. She had to calm down. Her father had taught her that she couldn't face every threat to her life with action. For a moment then it seemed like the situation was diffused and the girl was fine.
But she wasn't.
Her balled up fist suddenly launched up at the swordsman's face, specifically at his larger than life nose. Lecia wasn't trained to fight with her hands but a fist was a fist. The punch was untrained and awkward but luckily the man was right in front of her. It would be hard to miss unless he moved out of the way.
Father couldn't always be right? Could he?
[The Westride Plains] Farmer Unions Have No Names (Lecia)
Unfortunately for everyone, the fierce-hearted woman did not let up in her rage. Not only did she rebuke the wild-man's offer in it's entirety, but also proceeded to throw a punch at him. Gangui was beginning to get confused, he had no idea why she was getting so mad. She seemed to calm down for a couple trills, but suddenly threw a punch at him.
Reacting totally on instinct, the armored man opened his shoulder to dodge the blow. "Woah!" Gangui exclaimed before stuffing his palm into the woman's face. He did not strike her though, but merely pushed. Unless the fiery woman dodged or broke his grasp, he would deliver enough force to make the lithe creature fall to the ground.
"Don't you know what is good for you woman!?" Gangui burst out with a holler from deep within his loins. Now his simmering Aukari blood was partially rising up to the surface, "Stop being so stupid! I am here to do a job that you can't do alone! Can't you see!?"
Turning his head towards the group of farmers as he rebuked them too, "And at least this woman has the gall to fight back! What happened to the glorious Etzorsi farmer of the yonder era?!"
Trial 10 of Cylus, 717
One moment she was about to wallop the man in front of her with all the strength she could muster. The next she found herself being shoved to the ground by his own large hand. It wasn't difficult for the man to drop her to the grass considering she was already off balance from her fairly inept and apparently useless attack. So she found herself there. On the ground.
At least he didn't shove her into the fire.
Lecia knew she was bested physically by the mercenary, it was a painfully obvious fact. But his following words didn't cool her off either as she spit in his his direction. "Don't you dare think you know what is best for me, -man- you don't even know me." It seemed she would be a minority in everything, race and gender included. "Maybe WE could get the job done here if I wasn't the only one with a sense of bravado." She scanned the other farmers who for the most part dared not meet her gaze, they knew she was right. But she couldn't blame them, they weren't fighters just farmers.
The woman rose back to her feet without any threatening gestures following, at least not right away. "So this is how it is going to be then?" Lecia's threatening stance and attitude whipped back out in a heartbeat as she berated her neighbors. "It will come down to me then? Nobody else here wants to share the burden, the cost, of this man?" Her hatchet wildly flew through the air as she pointed it at the various sub groups of farmers, almost hitting the mercenary a few times. Almost. Not that she would have cared if she did.
The crowd was silent save for a startled infant. "Fine! I suppose I will take our savior here and go." Lecia patted the grass from her clothing once more before turning and heading off towards her own farm.
"Let's go Red Hair. Immortals be damned you had better be worth my trouble. Unless you're afraid of being beat up by a woman?"
