Navik's Plotnotes

Peek Inside a Mind
What I most want for Navik is character development. Is for him to leave the state of mind he is in now and reach another, more calming one. That will probably translate in a familiar later on, but is more than that. Right now, I see Navik as mostly angry at himself, because he can't be who he wishes to be. Because he feels like he hurts people more than helps them. Because he can't quite find his place in the world. Because he loves his father and his people, but feels completely disconnected from the Sev'ryn. Because he feels so close with his Avriel nature - survival instincts that turn into anger, because he was never taught how to control them - but he can't understand himself, and has literally no knowledge of whom the Avriel are. So he can't connect anywhere. And that all translates into restlessness, harshness in his actions and anger. That doesn't mean that he is angry all the time, but when something annoys him, he takes it out of proportion.

Of course anger is not all that defines him. He is kind, truly and not only because he wants to be better himself. He cares very deeply for people, and often is afraid of getting too attached, which makes himself keep them away - mostly. He can make great sacrifices to help another, although he doesn't know it himself just yet.

All of these points are points I want to explore, either through flashbacks or present threads. And I think all of these points are points that need work before he can finally learn to calm down, to control his feelings and to accept himself. So these are my main goals for him. First, though, I need to stablish him as a character, improve his skills and knowledge a little to reflect his past, and then, see how these points in his personality defines him and his interactions with others.

• Brief Analysis of Current Personality - The Twelve Archetypes •

As seen here and here, archetype means something like "original pattern". Archetypes in a sense of personality would mean something like universal motives, and each person's behaviour is a consequence of their archetypes. Of course, each person has their own combination of archetypes and the intensity in which each one shows varies. I'm not a psychologist, so I may have understand something wrong along the way, but for roleplaying purposes, I think it would be interesting to investigate Navik's archetypes and if they change along the way.
  • Primary Archetype - The Caregiver: His deepest desire is, in the end, to help and protect others. This is, essentially, what The Caregiver is. All of Navik's insecurities comes from the fact that he is afraid to hurt others if/when he loses control. Essentially, his desire to become a doctor is so he can help, do things for others in the best way he knows how.
This is far from saying that he is completely selfless, only that it's what he wishes to be.
  • Secondary Archetypes - The Lover & The Orphan: Navik possess some traces of The Lover archetype - desire of intimacy, desire to please others - but not all. He doesn't feel the need of becoming more beautiful, for example. However, The Lover here can be applied more accurately when in exchange of a single person, it applies to a race - either the Sev'ryns or the Avriel. He does desire to blend in with the Sev'ryn, his wings sometimes making him feel uncomfortable amongst his people. He is deeply afraid of being unloved, not by a specific individual, but more as a general concept. With a few tweaks, The Lover could apply greatly - although not fully, hence it's a secondary archetype - to him.
Likewise, The Orphan can be adapted and explained in a similar way. However, one point of note is that the shadow side of this archetype is more present in Navik's behaviour - he feels so lost and so unworthy that it can result in him being angry when people expect too much of him, or even hurting those close to him because he can't control himself.

There are, of course, characteristics from other archetypes on Navik, but mostly as a result of the ones of his primary and secondary ones and, most importantly, do not come off as strong as those three do. This all also doesn't mean that he is always selfless - although he is always seeking to help others -, nor that all relationships he develops are co-dependant, or that he won't accept any help and will always excuse his behaviour due to his lack of worth. These are more general guidelines as how he would be likely to behave in a determined situation, and why he would do so. Perhaps they will even change - or how they manifest will - as he grows and changes himself.

The Caregiver

Core desire: to protect and care for others
Goal: to help others
Greatest fear: selfishness and ingratitude
Strategy: doing things for others
Weakness: martyrdom, co-dependence and being exploited.
Talent: compassion, generosity
Shadow Side: The suffering martyr, who controls others by making them feel guilty. “Look at all I sacrificed for you!” It evidences itself in all anipulative or devouring behaviors, in which the individual uses caretaking to control or smother others. It is also found in codependence, a compulsive need to take care of or rescue others.

The Lover

Core desire: intimacy and experience
Goal: being in a relationship with the people, work and surroundings they love
Greatest fear: being alone, a wallflower, unwanted, unloved
Strategy: to become more and more physically and emotionally attractive
Weakness: outward-directed desire to please others at risk of losing own identity
Talent: passion, gratitude, appreciation, and commitment
Shadow Side: Includes the sirens (luring others from their quests), seducers (using love for conquest), relationship addicts (feeling addicted to love), and anyone who is unable to say no when passion descends, or is totally destroyed when a lover leaves.

The Orphan

Core desire: connecting with others
Goal: to belong
Greatest fear: to be left out or to stand out from the crowd
Strategy: develop ordinary solid virtues, be down to earth, the common touch
Weakness: losing one's own self in an effort to blend in or for the sake of superficial relationships
Talent: realism, empathy, lack of pretence
Shadow Side: The victim, who blames his or her incompetence, irresponsibility, or even predatory behavior on others and expects special treatment and exemption from life because he or she has been so victimized or is so fragile. When this Shadow of the positive Orphan is in control of our lives, we will attack even people who are trying to help us, harming them and ourselves simultaneously. Or, we may collapse and become dysfunctional (i.e. “You can’t expect anything from me. I’m so wounded/hurt/incompetent”)

Character Concept
My concept for his appearance was to make him very similar to a bird, while still being a person. So I think most of his appearance is due to his Avriel mother, although his father's genes kind of pulled him to be more human-like. His face is very characteristic of what I think a bird-like person would look like.
The feathers of his wings, shoulders and abdomen are dark blue, with black dots over them, and shaped like a falcon's wing. They are weak, since his blood is not fully Avriel, but they are beautiful. His nails are blackened, like the talons of a bird, but they are not strong enough to be considered claws. They are still nails, only with an odd coloration.

The reasoning behind his down feathers (Avriel are more covered in feathers than Navik is, and most of his feathers in the belly and spine are down feathers) is exactly because he would not have fully developed his feathers, since his blood isn't as strong as a true Avriel.

• Ink on the Skin •

Tree in his chest: the tree is the tattoo all Sev'ryn get when they are young. Navik chose his to be over his heart so he could keep his people and his origins as close to him as possible. The tree is simple, but big. It serves as a reminder of what he could accomplish, if only he can better himself, and that he has the strength to be better.
Red winged snake on left arm: Naureey told him the winged snake was the symbol of medicine. He never knew if it was true or not, specially because he never asked another person. However, the red tattoo was more a reminder of Naureey and what she had meant to him than properly done because it was the symbol of his new path. The snake swirls around his left - and dominant - arm.

Of Faith & Blessings
(& Curses)

To him, it was the Immortals that, in one way or another, gave birth to the world as it is now. So the Immortals are to blame for corruption and evil, but also for love and peace and the people itself. Even to those he despise, Navik nurtures a deep respect for them. Sometimes, this respect comes with admiration, sometimes it makes him follow the Immortal, sometimes it just comes with disgust by what they are. It highly depends on the domain. Navik doesn't frown upon or turn his back to an Immortal simply because their domain is something considered bad. The world needs balance, and sometimes the good needs the bad. However, there are some he cannot excuse, and those are the ones he outright goes against.

His views are sometimes so ample and strange, that Navik prefers not to associate himself with any formal religion.

The relationship with those that Navik cares about enough to hate or love, are in his Character Sheet. The devotion ledger is below.

Arc: 709

Ashan

  • 31st During a hunt, Navik misses a deer with his bow and gets angry, destroying his bow and injuring his father.
  • 32nd His father talks to him about Avriel nature, trying to make him understand what it is. He promises that he will help Navik control himself.
  • 40th Navik and his father go on a hunt, where he is told not to use any weapon, and just let instincts take control.

Ymiden

Saun

  • 3rd A hunt takes much more effort and tires Navik much more, making him unable to fly for three days, and making him seem almost back to normal.
  • 25thAnother hunt, and both of them begin to see that the more tired Navik is, the easier it's for him to control himself.

Vhalar

  • 57th With Saun gone, and the weather becoming more cold, the hunts need to be longer. However, they return too early, and Navik completely destroy their couch at home in anger.
  • 100th Another Sev'ryn kid interrupts his hunting, and Navik injuries him although he manages to stop himself before doing much damage.
  • 101st Navik locks himself inside his room, refusing to come out. When he grows too bored, though, he ends up destroying his bed and killing the iyọ in his room. When his father comes to see what happened, Navik injuries him again before finally taking control of himself again.
  • 120th - 121rd Trying to figure out a way to tire his more and more intense energy, Ti'wang takes his son in a two-day hunt, teaching him a few things about looking for water and making a shelter. The mental and physical stimulation seems to tire him enough to make Navik more controlled, like in Saun.

Zi'da

  • 1st-2nd A two-day hunt is no longer enough when Navik wakes up at night and tries to prey on a pet inside Desnind.
  • 3rd-5th Increased to three days, the slightly colder weather reminds both of them that soon this kind of hunting trips will become impossible. Ti'wang refuses to talk about it, instead just teaching Navik how to survive in the cold.
  • 15th-18th[/b] The long hunt seems to work, until during the night of the last day, Navik tries to hunt his father like he did with animals. He came to himself just before striking, crying and begging for his father to make it stop. Ti'wang finally tells how the Avriel deal with this kind of thing, and Navik says he should leave, despite his father's protests.
19th The day is spent making preparations, and then Ti'wang escorts him away from Desnind, before finally letting his son go.

Cylus

  • 1st The first sunless trial is frightening, and Navik has to fight against the need to go back to Desnind and his father.
  • 15th After so many days in the dark, Navik began to behave more like an animal driven by instinct than a Sev'ryn.

Character Arcs
font=Georgia]
[A story arc is a sequence of events that makes the character answer to a single (although sometimes ample) problem, issue, etc. There are a few arcs of character development I'd like to do with Navik, and these are their outlines. They are not set in stone, and there isn't a need for one to be finished so another can start. They are more like on-going things I want to have on his life.

• Starter Quest - Letter from Naureey •

Starter quest: Late one night you get an urgent knocking at your door. Your superior has demanded that you come to the Order headquarters in Desnind. When you arrive, you are ushered into a small room where a heavily scarred man is lying, dead on a table. Beside him, a letter addressed to you in Naureey's writing. Unfortunately, the rest of the writing is obscured by blood, and the letter falls apart as you try to read it. What could it have said? Is this a love letter, or could she be in trouble?
  • Before I can do this quest, though, the Order of the Adunih writeup on Desnind and Niomyr needs to be ready for play, so I have a little while to plan it.
  • Naureey asks for his help, since she is in trouble to have been found out as an Aukari. Navik still doesn't know it when he goes to help.
  • She tells him the truth, and although it is hard, he accepts it.
  • Still unsure whether or not a romance will develop between those two, or how the consequences of him helping her will impact on his relationship with Asari.

• Through Immortal Times •

• True Love, True Sorrow •

• Lost Family •

• A Familiar Soul •

• Slave to a Will •

• Order of the Adunih •
